[Q] Getting YouTube links to open in App - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Whenever I click a YouTube link it opens in the browser instead of the App.
Is this pertaining to the "data tapping" patent that Apple somehow was awarded and does anyone have any idea how to make it work as previously intended and open in the YouTube app.

was wondering the same thing

Yeah it is driving me insane...its like oh hey...let's totally change the way something has been for years.

Thank Apple for this. It's part of the patent that had these phones held up in customs. It's the same on any US based Sense 3.6 rom and Sense 4.0 rom such as the HTC One X. The app that does this is htclinkifydispatcher.apk.

If you have root you can use a file explorer and rename htclinkifydispatcher.apk to something like htclinkifydispatcher.apkBAK. This will break a few things. You won't be able to open any links from the default text app, google talk will crash everytime you try to open a link, and you won't get youtube links to work in stock browser, but all other programs work fine.

Jesus Christ...I froze mine with titanium but YouTube still opens in browser. I will try it your way and see if I can live with it.
Why must Apple mess with HTC. I have had a Samsung Galaxy S and GS2 since the first Epic launched and this is seriously the one thing I hate about the EVO. Esp if I have 6 tabs open when I try to click a link.
On Viper also not that that matters.
Does any devs or anyone have any thoughts about reverting it back and having it be stable?
I would pay for the old way...I didn't always wanna use a certain app when hitting things and now I'm forced to set defaults.

Freezing doesn't work, I forgot to mention after renaming the file you have to reboot. Also make sure to clear defaults for the stock browser, and while you're at it, I suggest downloading ICS Browser+

Def going to, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The irony there would be if you did that, so you could open links to YouTube with YouTube app, then somebody texted you a link to a YouTube video. Lol
But yeah, this infuriates me The way apple screwed us!! I mean, it used to work beautifully. It was genius. Can't wait for some AOSP ROMs, as they won't suffer from this. Everyone should smash apples

If you use a third party messaging app it's fine. Honestly HTC just needs to add more options to their app associations. Sense ROMs from other countries don't have this problem so a custom sense rom using their apks would solve this problem.

What's funny is that my Tegra 3 One X opens links right into the YouTube app, but my S4 one will not.

Funny that YouTube is owned by google yet they have to defend rights to use it

Its not the right to use it that has them in trouble its the method of opening links that apple claims they have the patent. Well not claim they do have it. Its sad they would give a patent for such a common function.

Can you please extract your htclinkifydispatcher.apk from your international one x and post it so that we can install it over our american version.
That would be most helpful.

Facebook's new video chat feature

So I'm sure a lot of you have heard that Facebook introduced its new video chat feature today through a partnership with Skype.
I was wondering if anyone has been able to download the exe file onto their tablet. It is not automatically downloading for me and there is nowhere for me to click start download, but on my laptop it worked fine.
the OS has no idea what an exe is

You can google the apk file and just install it directly onto your view. That's what I did...works fine but do get an occassional FC every ten times I open the app. Plays pretty smoothly over 4G at work...

Does anyone have the APK
I paid 8 bucks for the NBA app ( not the games subscription but the paid version of the NBA app). It works on my phone but my View doesnt have Sprint service.
I tried to install the apk from my phone onto the View and it doest work.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated
Interestingly enough, the D-League app works great , WTF
Most of these Carrier specific apps like Sprint and Verizion will check in on the carrier network when they boot and if you have no service, then they don't work
Thats weird though because I didnt download the app through the EVO View itself, I have a G2 and sent the tablet the apk from that
Can anyone get the apk file and post it somewhere, I been looking for the Sprint spk for days and every link is broken. I hear that this is the only version that actually works with HoneyComb tablets!
from your device just google "sprint nba android market" then when you get to the browser version of the market click install on the top left, sign in and choose browser when the pop-up comes up, wait for page to load and then click back and this time select the market app instead of browser.
once you figure out a work-around to use off the sprint network let us know....ive purchased the $32 service on my e4gt but would like to share it with my nook color also

Disabling htclinkifydispatcher.apk

So I've removed the app but run into problems opening youtube links in 3 apps. They are stock browser stock messaging and Google Talk. Google Talk crashes after removing htclinkifydispatcher stock messaging just won't open links period. Anyone know which rom to copy these apps from or a way to modify these apps so we can get the normal android "how to process these links" action?

Be sure to go into manage apps, select browser, and hit clear defaults. Then, for good measure I restarted my phone. After that, you will get the option to select what program opens the links from then on.

Breaks Phone Numbers
This appears to break the ability to click phone numbers in e-mails. No apps open when clicked a phone number. I also don't see Dialer or Phone having an option to clear defaults.
Argh, this is annoying. HTC should really make sure the stock linkifier app is really detailed with its options and settings. It sounds like netierh the stock app nor root and removing it provides a good experience for linking. The only option is to load a custom ROM?
It seems like you'd have to replace any app that HTC modified to depend on htclinkifydispatcher.

Can't we just get the international version of htclinkifydispatcher.apk??
Would an older, working HtcLinkifyDispatcher.apk from Sense 3.0 be compatible?
Nevermind, that apk doesn't even exist below sense 3.6

News and Weather app

I really like the simple News and Weather app (I believe it is a google app) that was on my EVO Shift and Nexus S. I was dissapointed the LTE didn't have it so I found a data app version of it and am uploading it here in case anyone else wants it. It's just a data app so no messing with /system or anything. Click and enjoy
Thanks, this was a favorite on my old evo. This one seems a little refreshed even, is it opening links in its own browser?
Yeah this is the first device I have used where the links open in its own browser. I don't really like that actually so I've switched to a different one posted. You cannot resize the page in that browser for some reason. The reason I liked this one was because you can install it like a normal data app and on some ics roms on my tablet the menu button won't appear if I use the system app for some reason. But my tablet doesn't open links in that weird browser thing or else I don't notice it since I use it zoomed all the way out.
Worked perfectly on GT-I8190N

The 24hr forecast graph is very useful. I've been searching for this app for my S3 mini since my Nexus S died.
Don't know how you found a "data app version of it" but this is perfect for non-rooted devices.
Thanks a lot! :good:
Awesome find... This version is much better than the version I was using prior. Thanks!

[MOD]HTCLinkifyDispatcher Fix

Running a Sense 3.6 or 4.0 ROM and tired of not having a choice what app to use?
Sick of Apple and their patent infringement lawsuits?
This script will revert the workaround HTC put in place to comply with the ITC's order to remove the patent infringement.
This script makes a backup of your current build.prop, and then EDITS IT IN PLACE.
What does this mean? It means you can flash THIS file on ANY ICS 3.6 or 4.0 ROM on this phone and it will not mess up any tweaks your specific ROM dev has put in place.
Why is this important? There are a number of build.props edited with this fix (and others)...some of them are from the stock ROM and some are from various other custom ROMs. Simply copying one over your current build.prop could lose you important optimizations, or custom fixes your dev has set up. By flashing this script you keep those customizations and still get the benefit of having your choices back.
Instructions:
To tell if this edit worked for you, check in settings. If the app associations menu option is gone, then it worked.
You will need to clear defaults for specific programs in order to have a choice pop up.
Example:
If you have selected Chrome for your default browser in app associations, you will need to go to menu/settings/apps/downloaded/Chrome/clear defaults.
The next time you tap a URL you will have a choice of which browser to use.
Credits:
Thanks to iconeo for the original thread found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1693809
Thanks to Steal25 for the actual build.prop edits.
I am including two zip files. The first one will make the build.prop change to allow you to choose your own defaults.
The second one (HTCLinkify-revert.zip) will allow you to put your build.prop back to its default.
There are other build.prop edits out there and I will be creating ROM agnostic flashable zips for those as well.
Please let me know if there are any issues with this flash.
Good idea on packaging it this way it'll make it easy for those that havent made edits to a build.prop yet.
very good!

Right, that was my thought as well. Plus this way if a dev updates the ROM but doesn't add this fix in as a default, it's the easiest way to get it back.

Thanks. That was my whole point: I could see times where people would just copy over random build.prop that already had the tweak, over a ROM with a heavily edited build.prop and mess up everything their ROM Dev was trying to do...and then I thought of the poor devs trying to cope with figuring out random glitches due to build.prop changes and I thought...hey, let's make this easy for EVERYONE.
Now the users don't have to edit it themselves and the devs don't get stuck trying to figure random bugs out without knowing a user may have changed build.prop, or overwritten it.
Win for everyone.

Nope. This mod allows you to choose what app you want to launch when clicking on say a URL. This is the functionality that Apple claimed infringed one of their patents.
It doesn't have anything to do with 3rd party apps, aside from allowing you to decide which one you want to launch, either each time, or by default.

I'm still kind of confused, so was the patent on the "Complete action using" dialog box? I thought that was present in all Androids for years now, and I thought iOS didn't even give you an option.

Yep, that's what it was about. And whether android has been using it forever or not isn't the point. Apple dusted off their patent book and found that it was infringing.
Stupid patent law system.
Thanks. This was bugging the hell out of me.
