SGS3 looming - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

http://www.androidcentral.com/samsu...-wireless-and-us-cellular-services-starting-m
Is it wrong that I feel slightly compelled to return my EvoLTE (got a few days left in my 14) and get the SGS3? With a global launch of nearly identical phones (save for CDMA, frequencies, etc, S4 in the US), it is gonna be a hit phone. I really have very few issues with the EvoLTE besides the goofy multitasking button (for which I installed the mod).
I know the screen is technically inferior, but most who have used SGS3 seem to agree our eyes can't tell.
2GB RAM is REALLY compelling, and I think its going to have a kicking dev community, and no locked bootloader.
Please don't write me off as a troll. I'm not a hater, I like the EvoLTE. I'm just going to be stuck with a phone for 2 years, and feel under pressure to make the right choice.

ill keep my htc. i prefer sense over crappy touchwiz or whatever its called
but if you want it so bad you should get it ^_^

I just read the news on phonearena...and I knew without a doubt I would find a post like this here.
First off...the international version of the SIII will have a great dev community, the sprint version....not as much. Will it be good/great? Maybe....but it won't top the evo. From what I can tell...most of the great dev community from the Evo 4g is/has moved here. I mean, cm9 is already out....what does that tell you?
The screen is inferior...and 2gb of ram sounds great. I just don't see how it is really can be considered better.
This is how I see it, and I have owned several brands of phone, no fanboyism here. (Evo-Evo3d-epic 4g touch-iphone 4s-Galaxy nexus).
The evo has better build quality, feel, screen, UI overlay, and support from HTC...yes support, look at both versions of the epic. Both suffer from slow updates and bugs...
GSIII- possibly more ram, few innovative features (or gimmicky depending on who you are). The GSIII has worse build quality, worse screen, touch wize makes the phone look gingerbreadish, and the support from samsung on sprint has not been the best in the past.
That beings said, I believe the phones will have similar performance levels. If the GSIII has two gigabits of ram, that will be cool, but I doubt the everyday user will see a huge difference, if any.
Yes the evo 4g lte has weird multitasking...but the aggressive memory managing can be turned off in a custom rom. Plus sense is great, and so is AOSP. You can do either with this phone...but you have the options of touchwize (which may be great if you like it) and AOSP on the GSIII.
Is really debatable which is better. Engadget thinks the one X series is better...while phone arena thought the GSIII series is better.

There are great devs here too. For me I'm keeping the Evo.

Crap radios, weird looking (my opinion),poor build quality, touchwiz,GPS issues ,screenes not as good.I never have a problem with a gig of ram. I just think it isn't necessary... yet anyway.it's gonna be a beast for sure, just don't like Samsung...definitely a matter of opinion .I don't think there will be that much of a difference in performance.

Horrible radios! i was getting half the speeds of what i do now, voice and data. Never going back to Samsuck
Sent from my Viper tuned ltEVO

Why is the SGSIII screen worse than the EVO 4g LTE?

As others have said radios are not good however I guess this will be the true test as far as radios seeing how they are using Qualcomm chip with radio built in... And then we will know if its just their crappy programming or something. Lol also the screen is up to you I have a gn basically same screen as sgsiii and its ok however the sgsiii is slightly better I guess cause of spacing?
Touchwiz isn't good imo and its the same look as it has been HTC at least reinvented the wheel this time around to.make it better in some ways. The extra 100 in batt will help some probably due to the screen. However I have seen many people say and or show up over on the LTE side from the og and other places.
2gigs of ram gimmick IMO I know some people say they have reloading issues when they hit home I haveny had that or anything... Not to mention the iPhone beat the sgsiii in a drop test I want to see EVO LTE in a drop test with it lol. So its all up to you keep man. And what you like better and if you want to bite down on a 35$ restock fee or 70$ restock fee if you.get the gsiii and decide you want EVO back lol.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

I'll be sticking with my LTEvo based on looks alone. The SG3 may beat out the LTE by a hair, but not by much if any. Ive been told the US version SG3 will have the same dual-core S4 Snapdragon processor as the LTE and the only thing it has on the LTE is the 2GB ram. Its a nice phone no doubt but the build quality on the LTE is simply amazing. Im happy with my LTE but im sure the SG3 will just as nice! Its great to have two awesome phones to choose from!

Really!? Have you even seen the ET4G forum!? it is probably the most dev'd device around and will only move on to the SGS3 the EVOLTE is a great phone but as of rt now Samsung is making much better and stable product then HTC, aside from the camera options the Evo is just barely catching up to the Touch(imho)
Think about it the Hero came out and was the best phone ever made then just before the EVO( the reason we have anything like we have now) and all the heros started crapping out then now come the EVOLTE and all the Evo4G are crapping out now Im not big on conspiracy but look at the pattern.
Again these are only my opinions and observations

After owning an EVO Shift then a Nexus S 4G I am sticking with the EVO. The feel of the phone is better and I believe HTC uses better internal parts. I never had reboots at all on my EVO Shift. I had reboots and screen of death frequently on my Nexus.
I also will never own another phone with a pentile screen, no matter what people say I can't see.

this.
I had the Epic 4G Touch since launch and even though I had no problems with the development, it was SLOW to start. it got root fast (that's to zedomax) but everything else came slowly, AOSP came 3-4 months or so after release, everything else was pretty much dominated by one or two devs/teams. Why? Because CDMA came later and is less popular than GSM, and which is global - the International version is GSM and the conversion of roms from GSM to CDMA is more difficult and time consuming than you would think. Rest assured there will be some devs as there always is with galaxy phones but you can't compare it to the amount there are with the International/GSM galaxy phones.
This phone, and however, blew me away with what we have thus far. Why? Because there isn't a "GSM" version to suck most of the great devs away from our development. it's got the best starting development out of all the Sprint devices I've seen(next to the OG EVO, and of course)
Several of the gimmicky features of the S3 are apks that have been leaked already (posted s voice and floating video player in themes&apps section). that said, I there isn't really anything that makes the S3 unique except the 2 gb ram and the HD pentile screen (debatable)

Actually, Epic Touch had very good developer support.
The samoled hd screen is indeed inferior.
Samsung phones definitely have better build quality, but they are made of plastic, so it's a wash.
Epic Touch had good support from Samsung.
Touchwiz is actually a much better skin than Sense. Especially sense 4, which is a bloatware and a resource hog. One thing you can expect from GS3 for Sprint is that it's going to have stellar software, where everything is hardware accelerated to the max and buttery smooth and fast.
I'm probably gonna keep the evo cause I hate the look of the gs3, but I'm also hoping that we can steal some of their software.

I doubt people are going to move from the ET4G, which is less than a year old, to the GS3. I am sure some of themore hard core crowd will but most people are under a contract or are quite happy with their phone. The reason a lot of people are moving to the new EVO is because they were on contract with the OG EVO or are using their last yearly upgrade from the 3D.

The Dev's alone will keep me from keeping my EVO. They made me like my 3D even when I had buyers remorse over the S2. They almost made me not have to buy this phone, thanks to the ONE s Rom. I'm also liking what I'm seeing so far, even though the phone has only been out for a week.

I just want to get this straight when we say build quality is good on Sammy we are referring to the phone withstanding a drop decently yes? Cause internal build quality radios n what not are less then amazing.
and the sgsiii is not as sturdy as the sgsii if anyone saw the vids of the two dropping compared to ip4s

Screen : research pentile , you'll see people viewing it under a microscope with some criticisms. Shrug.
Development community.. With sprints phone being more or less identical to verizons, I think it'll be at least as good. But for me, I just want a stable cm9, which really only takes a couple good devs. And both phones will have that, so I'll concede a wash.
Gps and radios, good points. Certainly one of the reasons I chose htc after my og epic. But maybe just maybe they got it figured out?
When picking a phone for 2 years, specs are key for me. Think about your computer: twice the ram is significant. Particularly considering the multitasking issues I too have experienced on this phone. Almost no apps truly save their state when you go away from them for a few min. And we'll be hoping both android 5 and 6 go on these generation phones (via Cyanogen probably) so more ram may be significant at that time.
Didn't have any issues with my epic build quality, came to appreciate the plastic even.
Also- isn't the gpu better, or will it be the same as evo in the us models?
Argh

Yes, that epic touch was built like a tank.

One more thing. Will Samsung ever make a phone that has a working GPS? I'm still waiting for my girlfriend's GS2 find a "GPS signal"

[Q] Did I really mess up by getting an Amaze 4g?

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I'm happy to finally become a member of this community after shedding my buggy LG touchscreen phone.
I got this Amaze 4g on Monday at the T-Mobile store since they had very limited phone stock and the sales reps highly recommended it since they had dropped its price to the same as the SGS2. This is my first smartphone but I'm now disappointed to find out that the Galaxy S2 has much more dev support and is a bit better for gaming and power-using. I keep seeing youtube videos that hail the Amaze 4g as the winner in most if not all head to head reviews.
I'm now contemplating returning this for a Galaxy S2 since gaming is a big part of my spare time, but I'd have to pay a damn $50 restocking fee. Is the Galaxy S2 that much better to justify paying the $50? Am I really missing a lot?
I would love to hear more from gamers using the Amaze 4g. Most reviews of heavy games on the Market like Modern Combat 3 and Dead Space have reviews of SGS2 users, and I could find no Amaze 4g users among the reviews. I'm not really much of a picture taker, so the camera on the Amaze isn't something I would miss too much. I'm not looking to start a flame war or anything of the sort. I just want to make sure that I have a capable phone to play these games before I buy them.
They have the same processor so gaming shouldn't be too different performance wise.
The reason your seeing more reviews for the galaxy s 2 is because the gs2 is a more popular phone world wide compared to the amaze.
I work for tmobile and the most popular phone people ask for is the gs2, maybe due to proper ads by Samsung where HTC kinda stopped with advertising their flagship phones since they roll out a new one every month.
So don't worry, u got urself an amazing phone!

Hey.. leak out some kernels and phone info so we can grow the development...
Just stick a usb in.. copy, paste, and no one will ever know.
Just get a Galaxy S2 and feel good about it.
It's your choice not mine and if you don't feel like just get a right one for you.
You are stuck with this phone for Maximum 2 years.
Get a phone you want to use for 2 years.
I am a bit of a heavy user on my phone when it comes to games, all i use my phone for is games, facebook, text, and some other things xD haha. that said, i havent recieved my Amaze yet BUT i played Deadspace and Eternal Legacy (big game, over 1GB) on my Sensation and they ran butter smooth. now with the CPU underclocked and less RAM it would obviously not run as smooth as the Amaze.. the sgs ii will run just as smooth as the amaze in games. they have the same CPU/GPU/amount of RAM.
I'll vouch for this, I had the SGSII for a week and I hated every minute of it...the resolution is lower even though its a amoled screen, I don't think the colors are even that much better to be honest, the blacks are just darker, thats all.....I hated everything about it, the camera, how big it was, how big everything on it was...I did a direct sunlight test, and HTC IS better even though they advertise that super amoled is better, its BS. it has more dev support becauses samsung doesn't put as much restrictions on their phones as HTC does. That's the reason.
Camera is immensly better on the HTC. I absolutely hate Touchwiz, where as Sense seems much better.
Its ultimately your choice
Just to be clear when you're talking GS2 are you talking the GS2X with the Snapdragon or S2 with Samsung's more powerful Exynos processor?
Either way the Amaze has the upper hand in terms of resolution and Camera, keyboard if you're using stock Sense keyboard vs TouchWiz IMO. Game play goes to the Amaze if you're comparing Snapdragon's but if you're looking at the Exynos I'd give gaming to Sammy.

Love my Amaze, although I don't like the feel in my hand. My hands aren't that big so the curved back makes it difficult to hold it tightly.
Actually wished it was squared off more, like the SGS2, but it's a minor issue.
Held the DROID RAZR and that thing holds very nicely, but no removable battery (and not being on T-Mobile) kills it for me.
Overall, very satisfied with my Amaze, although it took installing LauncherPro & disabling a bunch of preinstalled apps using ADB using ZergRush 1-Click Temp Root.
I love the amaze as well.
Did a lot of researching before picking one up, but so far it's been worth it (other than battery life, and possible video recording issues.). Got a nice score of 1057 on Vellamo, so I'm plenty happy about performance. In terms of hardware specs, it's pretty much one of the high end ones, with a balance of storage and features. (Unlike a couple of other options out there.)
Hasn't locked up/random reboot on me yet!
Of course, I came from the Motorola xt720 (extremely buggy at times), which was my first android device. So my experience isn't as great as some others.
Currently on stock ROM, but it's unlocked and rooted. Just waiting for a nice stable ICS build to come along!
I came from an SGS1 and I loved that phone, especially since it had so much development. To be completely honest, if WIND Mobile had the SGS2, not a single doubt in my mind that I would've gotten that handset instead of the Amaze, simply because the SGS2 is leaps and bounds ahead of the Amaze in terms of custom ROMs and whatnot.
That being said, I still love my Amaze because it is by no means a bad phone. It's just a lot newer than the SGS2 and it's a shame that HTC is making it harder for developers to get into coding for the Amaze.
I love HTC I guess you could say I'm a fanboy so take this with a grain of salt. My friend has the Samsung C(r)aptivate and my mom the Samsung Galaxy Tab (1st gen), and when ever I upgrade either one I f**k it up in some way or another, because for some reason I always have to go back to stock before I do anything but having an HTC I forget this. I don't know about the SGSII since I've never rooted/flashed one but I love my HTC Amaze it should be better than the SGSII by a bit since it is clocked faster stock, however SGSII have an accelerated internet browser so it is a bit faster in web browsing. So all in all it is looks, feel and preference. I love the heft of this phone and the way it feels in my hand, Sense is the best interface other than AOSP although it is a bit heavy, IMO TouchWiz is garbage. So they are pretty damn similar phone (unless it is the SGSII Hercules which is exactly the same). As mentioned before Samsung has better development since it is a joke to root it and have no Nand lock etc...

My 2cents worth, the Amaze has only been out a few months, the Devs are working on it, so custom roms are slow coming out. Personally I really like the Amaze, and have never had a Sammy, so can't say on that. Finally it's all up to you and your preferences.
You my good sir did not mess up... The amaze is waaaayyyyyy better than that sgs2. First, just look at how the amaze is made compared to the same old plastic on the sgs. Second, the camera, don't even get me started, this phone has the best camera I've ever owned to be honest, I don't buy expensive cameras, infact I've only owned one camera. Third, there is more developement on sgs2 because its pretty obvious, Samsung has managed to put their galaxy line in the mainstream, popular enough to be competing head on with the iPhone. And remember that HTC doesn't release their phones the same way everytime, they change how their phones are made every few models, take a look at the sgs line and its pretty much the same. Also the amaze has a qhd screen, the sgs has has a 480p screen if I'm not mistaken, and when I look at the sgs it looks all pixaleted if you know what I mean. And finally, the dev here is still in its baby steps, its all about patience.
And as for gaming, my experience has been great, I've been playing gta3 with no fcs no lag, I've also played asphalt 6 and worked awesome.

Plus, the Amaze is one of the few to receive the ICS update (hopefully this month). And once that drops, I believe development for the Amaze will pick up substantially.

someone mentioned that the gs2 has lower clock speed, i think for the original one.. yes. but the tmobile hercules t989 it has the same clock speed.
anyways, there's too much exaggeration that the tmobile gs2 development is light years ahead of us. they do have a few devs, but they're not light years ahead of us. a lot of their devs are leaving, and its mostly just tweaked touchwiz, like how ours is tweaked sense. Yeah there are some asop roms, but don't think by having a gs2, you'll be flashing roms like crazy.. because you're not (yet).
I've had the amaze for 2 months before switching over to the gs2. Don't get me wrong, the amaze is a beautiful and fast phone with the better camera... much better. The only thing that bothered me is the battery life. the battery life is simply okay.. this could be fixed by running something other than sense or having a spare or two (one should be enough). but yes sense kills the battery. if it wasn't for the battery life, i would still be using the amaze.
listen to everyone else about the screen. the washed out screen isn't as bad as it sounds. you won't notice it at all when playing games. i played games on both phones. the amaze will give you more details and it will pop out more with more accurate colors. like i said on one of my breakdowns of the two phones.. if you're a gamer, you would want to go with the amaze simply because the games look better. functionality is the same for both phones. You're gonna kill your battery playing games on either so buy a spare anker and you're good to go.
As far as gaming the amaze is pretty bad as far as touch screen compared to the SGS2. i noticed this on few games that my buddy at work(who has t-mo sgs2) informed me about where multi touch gets faulty the more you play or longer you go with out rebooting you phone. This is not the case on his galaxy.
few games that come to mind are jelly defense, jet car stunts, flick golf, also on GTA3.
Well, I'm happy to hear more people have been gaming on the Amaze 4g. I've downloaded Zenonia 3 and Dead on Arrival and they make my phone's left side of the screen really hot. Yesterday whenever I would quit Zenonia 3 and go to the Task Manager, the phone would lock up and do a restart. It did this consistently 3 times! On the last time it switched off the mobile network by itself which was very frustrating.
I find the Amaze to be a bit laggy when navigating menus, especially regarding the touch-screen's feedback. I have yet to take a pictture with this greaest of cameras. Can Sesnse be removed? I just would love to know if this will get better but it is more of a gamble than anything. I hope when ICS comes out things get better. If the T-Mobile store doesn't get a SGS2 by next monday I'll have to stick with the Amaze.
Thank you all so much for the comments and advice.
I did a lot of soul searching when I was deciding on SG2 or Amaze.
What I like in the Amaze:
1) Camera buttons
2) Notification Light
3) Better form factor, SG2 feels too wide and square (personal preference)
4) Higher resolution
5) Solid/higher quality build perception
What I like from SG2 is:
1) AMOLED screen
2) Better battery life out of the box
3) Better benchmarks (bragging rights but doesn't translate into better everyday use)
4) Lighter feel
5) Better brand recognition
I initially ended up with the Amaze because they were out of SG2. I don't regret it after comparing it with two of my friends with SG2. I can still return the Amaze but I guess I'll keep it. The only thing I hate so far with the Amaze is the softkeys light bleeds onto the screen. Battery life so much better after I rooted and custom rom.
You guys shouldn't regret having the amaze, I am not happy with the sgs2. I use to have an amaze I really miss my amaze its impossible to get use to this stupid resolution. More devs don't matter when the roms aren't up to quality a lot of them haven't been updated in a long time. Juggernaut is the best so far IMO but the amaze feel is better x makes quality roms. No notification light is annoying to now I have to use bln.

agreed with every point. the amaze community is much better imho... that explains why we're still over here lol. I would most likely be back to the amaze in a little bit.

Getting rid of Evo, What should I get?!?

So now it turns out that the screen is broken on my Evo3D (bottom part of the touchscreen is irresponsible to touches) this is after the whole motherboard got replaced after I had the phone for a month, so my carrier will probably let me have a new phone, though I might have to cough up 50-100$ myself...
Not sure what I should get though, so I'd appreciate some input!
I could get an Evo3d for free, but my faith is HTC just isn't what it used to be. It's not just the poor quality of the Evo3D I'm talking about (the touchscreen issue seems to be fairly common) it's also the fact that HTC is making us Evo3D owners wait until at least summertime to get ICS update, which is just unacceptable for what was sold as a top of the line phone...
Moto RAZR
They'd give me the Droid RAZR for 50 bucks, and I'm pretty tempted, since it looks like a nice phone. A great SAMOLED+ QHD screen (Yes I know about the pentile), expandable up to 48gb, a pretty good camera, and super thin Kevlar surface all line up for a pretty sweet package. The only thing kinda holding me back, is that the SGX540 GPU in it is kinda old, battery life is supposed to be just average, and the camera, while good, isn't as good as in the Samsung GSII or iPhone 4S.
Galaxy Nexus
I miiight be able to get a Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Note if I cough up 100-200$ but not sure if I should go for it. Yes, it has an awesome screen and ICS, but whatever Android phone I get will have ICS in the next 3 months or so. The downside is a kinda old CPU/GPU combo (OMAP4430 and SGX540), a 5 mp camera, average battery life and only 16gb storage.
iPhone
Depending on what I'm willing to spend, they'll let me have an iphone4 for free, or 4S if I put down some cash. Between 50 and 200$ all depending on the 16/32/64 gb model. Now I know the iPhone option is kinda controversial, and if you had asked me a year ago, I'd never get an iPhone. But lately, I've gotten kinda disillusioned with Android. Even on a high end model like the Evo3D or SGSII isn't as smooth as iOS, and lag, even if very slight, is almost always present if you go to a list, for example. Theres also the issue of hardware quality and service. The last six months I've spent a couple dozen hours either trying to get an Android phone fixed, fixing issues with it, or taking it to repairs hops and waiting days or weeks for it to be repaired. With Apple you don't have to deal with all of that. They DO give really, really great service. If you take a broken phone to the Apple store, they often just outright replace it, and that counts for something IMHO.
I've had an ipad2 for the past 5 months, and I've really gotten to appreciate how fast and smooth the experience is, and how everything just works. The other advantages would be iMessage/FaceTime, which is really cool, having my phone work great together with my iPad, and the whole Apple ecosystem. Cameras are also top of the line, from what I've seen, and battery life is really good.
I know of the downsides with getting an iPhone, the biggest one would be the 3.5 inch screen. No matter how awesome, bright and sharp it is, it will take some getting used to, to go from a 4.3 inch screen to a 3.5 inch screen.
Other phones, like a Samsung or HTC are also available for me to get, this is just my top3. I'd really appreciate your input, and let me know what phone you'd get next in my situation... Thanks!
Based on your phone listing's looks like you have the GSM version. I would go with either the GN or the Note if it is not to big for you.
The GSM GN has pretty good battery life from what I have seen. The CDMA is not as good which is that I own. Needs the extended battery on CDMA to get decent life. There are a lot of people with the GSM version who get an average of 5 hours on-screen time. To me that is some pretty good battery life.
The downside like you said is only 16gigs of storage on the GSM GN without an SD slot. I just do not get that at all! Why only 16 on a device that cannot be expanded! Luckily the CDMA version came with 32gigs.
I owned the CDMA EVO 3D back in the day, then went to the Epic 4G touch which blows the 3D away. The GN is more in a league with the SGS2 then the EVO 3D. The GN is super smooth.
I personally stay away from Moto's, especially if you like to flash things...
I have been really fortunate not to have any trouble with my evo 3d. I also had the og evo before the 3d.
My next phone will not be htc though. Im very disappointed about ics being pushed back.
Anyway, from your list of phones to choose from i would not hesitate on switching. To the galaxy nexus. Ive had a chance to play around with it a few times and really love it. Updates will always be faster to and of course it comes with the new chip for mobile purchasing. Really comes down to your personal preference and needs really. Your listed phones are all great products. I will never purchase an apple product, but i know a lot of people that love them. Good luck to you.

There's no way of telling about the updates. Google's last flagship device has been completely ignored and won't get ICS. Doesn't really matter to me as I have faith in the xda community to get any updates on to it.

Any high end HTC, that is if you like and value Dev support here on XDA

Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S2 i9100. Those two phones are by far the best supported phones development wise on this site. It's only going to get bigger with the GS2 likely decreasing if the GS3 makes a big enough impact.
No HTC phone besides the Sensation compares development wise right now. A few legacy devices here and there, but for the specs, the two phones I mentioned above cannot be beat right now.
I'm in the same boat, well I'm selling mine, I'm so disappointed in HTC, too many freezing up and restarting by itself on stock rom, moving on

Thanks! The one thing I REALLY liked about the Evo was the QHD screen. So I really don't want to go back to an 800*480 screen. The Moto Razr and Galaxy Nexus have pretty much the same CPU/GPU right? OMAP 4430/60

They more or less are the same CPU. I would head over to the Galaxy Nexus forums and learn more about their processor and how it actually is a pretty remarkable in performance. Google picked out nice specs for their flagship.

Sold mine on Ebay. Bought a Epic4G touch. Not looking back. The only thing I appreciated about the Evo4G was the development community. Other than that, I'm getting twice the battery on a larger screen.
That would be my vote. And I paid full price for the Epic. Worth it.

Lol I saw you post in a thread the other day that your next phone will either be an iPhone or a windows phone haha
Evo3D.
evo 3d seems very cheap now for a (once high end) mid range phone.
I've had nothing but good luck with my Evo 3d and love it, only thing i dont like is the flimsy backing plate. From reading your post i cant help but ask were you rooted? There are tons of great roms and app mods available in the forums here, all solve numerous issues and improve upon stock in any number of ways.
As far as choosing a phone goes, if you can get a new 3d free I'd stick it out and wait to see what's available withing the coming months, MWC just finished up and there were tons of greats devices announced.
Otherwise GSII gets my vote.

Finally made up my mind...

So, after MUCH agonizing (like I'm sure a lot of you have done/are doing), I've decided to go with the Evo 4G LTE over the Galaxy Nexus. Physically, I think the simplicity of the GN design is way sexy (particularly like the slight curve of the phone, helps fit to your face while talking), but the unibody metal of the Evo and the kickstand are way awesome (although I'm not particularly fond of the shiny plastic top third of the back).
In terms of the vanilla ICS vs. Sense 4, what finally helped me make the decision was running CM9 for a little while, then running Virus' Sense 4.0 ROM. I certainly do love AOSP ICS, its quite speedy and responsive, and most of the features & widgets from Sense have some counterpart in the market available. However, coming from the OG Evo, and now the 3D, I've always found myself going back to Sense in the end, no matter how many ROMs I've tried. Plus, this version really is quite light over ICS, and much of the AOSP feel comes through beautifully.
The main downside I'm concerned about is the potential delay with OS updates (even though JB, as I understand it, will be 4.1 and primarily introduce the first iteration of Google Assistant). I was concerned about the locked HTC bootloader vs. the developer friendly GN, but considering the phone hasn't even been officially released to the wild and there's already root access and custom ROMs (although no S-OFF yet), I have faith in the dev community flourishing.
Dunno if this'll give any insight whatsoever into anybody else, but I'm happy to have finally made a choice!
I think whatever phone you prefer in its stock form is the one to go with. I love the gnex and it's quick updates along with easily unlockable appease but hardwire it is behind the EVO LTE. That said I wouldn't buy the EVO LTE because I truly dislike sense. I wouldn't buy either phone myself. But that's just it, that's android, we as consumers can choose to buy the newest phone or just wait for the one that meets our needs! I'd love to HAVE the EVO LTE or gnex right now, however using my upgrade one either one isn't something I'm comfortable with.
So tldr I'm happy for any fellow android user regardless of the phone they have just as they should be with the next man.

No LTE on Sprint. I think One X is the phone to get.
Truth in that. While I have a MacBook (for music/design) and iPad (for music/general net access & reading), I dont think I could ever get down with an iPhone. Android's greatest strength is its variety and flexibility in being a unique, personalized phone for the end user. Within the capabilities of the hardware we choose, we can make our devices do almost anything. I absolutely AGONIZED over what to get, and was on the verge of holding out and getting nothing, but I want to go ahead and push forward with the Evo LTE. Also helps that I have two other lines on my account that are due for upgrades next June, so I'll have an opportunity to move to whatever new hotness is around then

I've been struggling with this as well since I found out yesterday that as of today I'm eligible to sign another two year contract. I thought I would have to wait until october but apparently not lol.
I absolutely love the design of the galaxy nexus and stock android kicks ass. I put a fairly stockish rom on my friends nexus and already its faster than my evo. I love the screen too. But its based on last years technology. The evo lte is a great phone and all but the design isn't uniform enough for me. It's like they had a bunch of different ideas and just threw them all together. While its very fast, I don't feel like its worth locking myself in for another two years for it. It's only an incremental upgrade over the 3d imo.
I want to wait for the quad core Qualcomm s4 with the adreno 320 gpu, and I wouldnt mind a 720p super amoled plus display. I would prefer a nexus device as I love stock android. Less bloat, uniform ui design, faster. And if the next one looks anything like the galaxy nexus I'll jump all over it. But who knows when those next gen of phones will come out, and if they will come to sprint in a reasonable amount of time.I hate waiting when I can upgrade now lol
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
I think you've made the right choice. Don't concern yourself too much about update IMO. Lots of devs here that I'm sure will have that phone and as far as HTC updating to JB, to me as long as ICS runs great then why bother with JB. By the time JB matures I'm sure there will be other devices out. But I really dont see anything wrong with ICS. So better screen, better camera, newer device, and sense (which you prefer).
For me I'm kinda waiting for GS3 then I'll decide between that and Evo LTE.

it's different not improved.
more SD space on Evo is necessary because of the ****ty upload speeds. on One X with ATT's upload speed I can use my Box (50 GB) or Dropbox (25 GB) accounts to uplad my data and have it saved and shared.
the metal will loose it's color due to chipping, just like on evo 3D. this won't be a problem on One X.
2 things i would miss is the shutter button and kickstand. kickstand can be gained by getting cases that already include them. Shutter button, oh well.....
At least i can enjoy a phone that has reception and quick data speeds.
How long will your data cap hold out doing all the uploading and downloading? Even if you're grandfathered into an unlimited plan they still throttle after so many gb's. Should stick a straight Talk sim in there and get real unlimited for half the price on the same network.

I can only say that by your logic any new phone from an existing manufacturer is considered incremental then?
Bigger size, more powerful chips, LTE enabled, higher resolution SLCD HD screen, newest Android OS sounds like a lot more than "incremental".
Or is the Galaxy S3 also just an "incremental" upgrade from the E4GT?
Wouldn't the "next Nexus" you're waiting for just be an incremental upgrade from the current one? All that'll likely change there is the chipset unless JB is released by then.....it'll be similar sized, same resolution, etc....

No. For example the Galaxy S III, I would be all over that if the american version came with the quad core exynos and LTE. But it doesn't. That processor is beast, and already surpasses the qualcomm S4. And I'd love it even more if it came in the same package as the Galaxy Nexus.
As far as the Evo LTE, yes it's faster, has a better screen, and is LTE enabled. But I won't have LTE until the end of this year in my market, and I already had the latest Android OS, ICS. I think Sense 4 is over rated tbh, and yes I have tried it out. Plus the looks don't sit quite right with me. One thing I love about the Nexus is that it's just so sleek and simple, and that makes it sexy. The front is completely blacked out to the point that you can't really tell where the screen ends and where the rest of the face begins. The Evo LTE has like 5 different designs going on. Brushed aluminum sides, matte black bottom backing, glossy black top backing, anodized red aluminum stripe for the kick stand, and cheap plastic for the power/volume buttons (which I have learned to HATE on my old Evo 4G and my 3D). It's like the designers couldn't decide what to go with and just said hey **** it we'll put all of them together!
And it's not like my Evo 3D is slow right now. It's still chewing through everything I throw at it (thank you mikey for MeanROM).
I just can't get myself to lock into another 2 year contract knowing that the next gen of technology is right around the corner (IE, Q3/Q4 of this year). Specifically talking about the quad core qualcomm S4 with the adreno 320 GPU. That will offer a HUGE increase in performance over what I have now and that, I will have no problem signing a contract for. Especially if it's in a Nexus phone that offers pure android. Also it would be nice if it supported Sprint's 800 mhz LTE that they will roll out in 2013/2014.

Samsung SGS3 or Rezound?

Hey guys i cant decide if i should get the sgs3 or stick with my rezound. with money aside, what would you guys do? why is the sgs3 so hyped and is it even going to be better?
the rezound has 1.5 ghz dual core while sgs3 had 1.4 dual core. both have 8mp cameras.
idk they just seem similar and idk why this phone has so much anticipation.
any feedback would help
It's all what you really enjoy personaly I loved My epic 4G touch (sprints galaxy s2) and had to swap because sprint dropped signal in my area I like the rezound but I belive Samsung is geared to what I like and they give you more freedom on your phone.

well the speed of the dual core might be similar but they're running different chips, whihc apparently makes quite a difference in speed and supposedly in battery life too. but one thing samsung has had issues with on cdma from a lot of people's experiences i've read about is poor signal. for whatevre reason they seem to have trouble making good cdma radios.
If you don't like sense, want a thinner phone go with the gs3. If you want a better screen and sense stay with the Rez. I am 90% sure I am sticking with the Rez for now at least but I'll see what else is lined up for the fall/holiday time frame.
I think the biggest thing to consider between the two devices is the size, weight, and the battery life. SG3 has an edge on all of these 3 areas.
the screen on the SG3 can be too big for some people but if you like large phone, then it's the obvious choice. While SG3 is 1.2, it should actually runs faster due to the newer cpu.
personally if I would buying a new phone, I would choose SG3 over Rezound simply because it has newer technology and hopefully will support future os upgrade. The advantage with rezound of course is the ROM development.

I upgrade in august and I will probably either go Incredible 4g or go for a nexus. The samsung interface doesn't appeal to me and I am not a hardware nazi. Give me a phone that doesn't have interface lag and I am happy. the most powerful apps i use is probably my browser.
The sgsiii just doesn't look good as a phone looks wise. also after watching some of the break tests and system teardown videos, I'm afraid its gonna be as fraile as the iphone 3g was.
I recommend waiting to see what Google does with ASUS this fall-ish. The padfone looks pretty awesome.

Cause its a great phone with at least another 18 months of good life left. ICS hasn't even hit yet, and when it does there will be a huge resurgence of development. The screen is still the best one out there IMO, and I really love HTCs design style.
That, and the SGSIII is fugly. Extremely fugly.
Galaxy S3 has the Snapdragon S4 chipset, while the Rezound has the S3 chipset. With equal clock speeds, the S4 can be up to 50% faster than the S3. Overall the GS3 will blow the Rezound out of the water in terms of speed. It also has twice as much RAM and a larger battery. If you could get one for $200, I would do it. With its specs the GS3 seems like a phone that will still be decent 2 years down the line. I'm not so certain about my Rezound 2 years later. At full price I probably would just stick with the Rezound. The only two negatives for the GS3 would be the really large size, and the screen quality is likely a small step down from the Rezound (although 0.5" bigger). One other potential negative is TouchWiz, though I don't know how it compares to Sense 3.6 or 4.0.
S3 is bigger, faster, and has better battery life. I'm dropping the Rezound for it. UI lag drives me insane, and Sense seems like it will always have it, even though its only a split second lag from pressing phone and loading the dialer, I want instant loads like the iphone, and Sense doesn't do it.

anyone here upgraded from motorola photon ?

hi, I'm looking to upgrade my photon to HTC EVO 4G LTE
does anyone here own both of the phone ?
and can you give me some inputs ?
what I'm really want to know is :
-voice quality / earpiece sound quality (the photon is the very good if its not the best ear piece on a phone that i have ever owned before)
-battery life ( i use seidio extended battery on my photon, so i want o know what to expect from the non removable battery of HTC)
-radio reception strenght ? (again the Photon is one of the best in this department as well)
i want to upgrade because :
-im tired of waiting for the ICS on the photon
-and though the seideio battery is awesome , but the bulk is quite noticeable
-and the photon screen is terrible IMHO (can't hurt to change to 720p 4.7" screen NON PENTILE)
actually i also considered the Samsung galaxy SIII but i've never been a fan of samsung, and to me their build quality is not so good, and the material used is feel kind of cheap
and also i hate the touch wizzz i've always been a fan of SENSE but because the EVO 3D have bad radio reception, then i bought the Photon, which is an awesome phone.
anyway , can please somebody gimme some inputs ?
thank you so much.
I currently have the Photon, Evo 4G LTE and a Galaxy S3.
The Evo LTE is an elegant phone, but it's honestly not a lot better than the Photon in terms of functionality and speed.
When swapping between the phones I am reminded of how fast the Photon is, and it just fits in the hand. The two more recent phones are bulky and more difficult to operate with one hand.
My particular Evo has a bad antenna (just shipped it off to HTC for repair), so it kept dropping calls. But voice/call/radio quality on the Evo is really nice otherwise. In fact voice quality is the best I have ever used I think. And the screen is great! And the Evo's camera is super. Battery life is also very good!
On the downside the Evo feels fragile to me, unlike the Photon. Photon feels sturdy, and rubberized so it doesn't slip out of the hand very easily. Evo is slippery. Add a case and it's even bigger...
For the record, although the Evo and GS3 use the same chip, the GS3 is much faster all around. Lots of things, like voice to text, are faster on the Photon. ICS slowed that functionality down for some reason. The Photon translates sentences MUCH faster.
In all, ICS does not add a lot of meaningful advantages, and it slows some things down (like speech to text.) I would give the Evo a shot if I were you - just don't expect a HUGELY better experience and you should like it just fine. And I would not ditch your Photon just yet.
hmmm
thanks , you seems like the perfect person for me to ask
because you own all 3 of them
anyway about the phone call quality, the evo is better than the photon ?
and how about radio signal reception strength ?
if you have to choose between the SGS3 vs EVO LTE which one will you choose ?
actually i do really like the photon
the only thing is that i love SENSE so much that using any android without it seems like a little weird for me.
thats why I'm leaning towards the EVO LTE rather than the SGS3 because of the SENSE
but i wont buy the EVO LTE if the performance is not that great
the only thing that i like about the newer devices is their screen,
i love the Photon
its like the perfect phone.
it can work globally.
and have very good call sound quality.
and also the speakerphone is one of the best i heard from a phone before.
but the Screen quality is very bad IMHO and also the camera is bad.
and lastly it doesnt have SENSE
please tell me more about your opinions once again
so sorry for my questions and also pardon me of my bad english.
thank you so much.
i have the Evo lte and my girlfriend has the Photon. performance wise, the Evo is definitely faster but not by alot. the photon is a great phone, imo. the biggest difference in the two is the screen and camera. so much better on the Evo it's not even funny. with all this being said, i don't think i would upgrade from the photon to the new evo, too close in performance. if i were you i would just wait till ICS drops for the photon or wait till something substantially better comes out.
I used to have the Photon. Like others have stated, the performance between the two isn't much different. The camera and the display are better on the Evo LTE. It has been stated on other threads that the receiption on the Evo LTE isn't that good, but I haven't had any issues with it personally. I also am getting better battery life on my Evo LTE than I got on my Photon.
My Evo LTE was a little glitchy for the first 2-3 weeks that I got it, but it ahs seemed to simmer down since then. It has been pretty smooth for the last month.
One nice feature that my Evo LTE does that my Photon didn't, is that I can use data while on a call. It came in handy the other day when I was on a call and was trying to locate a store with Google Maps. I do not recall being able to do this with my Photon.
Do I think it was worth switching over to the Evo LTE? Yes, for me it was worth it because I gained a better battery (not too much, but anything is nice), simultanious voice and data, a better camera and display, and the option of receiving LTE (once it is fully rolled out).
Yes that's the thing..it isn't always about just speed..shoot my 3d was fast..and u can't get much faster than instant...to me when I see or hold my 3d or a photon I can just tell they are not in the same league as the newer devices..the screen on the LTE is the best screen on a mobile device period..imo of course..and the camera is terrific..and the nice build and scratch resistant screen is nice..I have not used a screen protector and I don't have one scratch..not even one of those little ones..its held up nice..I swear I'm like a broken record but if the multi tasking is fixed (and I know it can be..my girls intercept does) this is the perfect phone for me..but that one issue is a big one ..
Had the Photon til a new job required a new cell. The EVOs camera and screen are between superior and far superior to the Photon.
The Photon as a telephone, with which to make calls, is far superior to the EVO.
Everything else is personal preference. If you're in a non LTE market (heck I'm in a so-called live LTE market in Atlanta and I NEVER HAVE IT) I wouldn't bother with this phone.

I still have the photon. I still love the phone and I have no plans to get ride of it. Since I travel to México and it works great over there.
Performance wise you won't see a significant difference, the screen and camera are way better on the evo, though some times it feels slower than the photon but it is due to sense. I would love CM on this phone.
It is worth the switch but if you think you are going to see a day and night difference.. You are not going to see that.

I will add that the GS3 with a case on it ( so it feels better) is a seriously good phone. The screen is great, calls are clear, the camera is excellent. Even without the case it feels better than previous Samsungs. And it's definitely faster than the Evo, and good multitasking to boot. I have been using the GS3 for the past few days while waiting for Evo repair, and I don't really see any down sides.
Food for thought.
Sadly the multitasking really is abysmal...but people act like the screen and camera aren't 2 of the most important parts of a smartphone..and the EVO is fast ..sense may make it seem a little slower but its not..I've turned off transition animations and to me it makes my phone feel faster ..I've heard the photon has great radios so I don't think any phone has come along to take that crown from the photon..
You might want to wait for the new Motorola Photon LTE which will be out August 19th on Sprint:

Then you can compare Evo LTE to Photon LTE hands on in store.

That looked interesting but I read before its going to have a slide out key board. I think its kind of big for a physical one. Just my opinion on the Moto Q.

In all fairness, the keyboard on the moto photon q is pretty sweet.

The EVO 4G LTE is amazing. Buy it. People are really overstating its issues i think. They are few and far between. Amazing call quality, amazing camera, best screen in existence (way better than GS3), it has Sense which you like, the kickstand is freaking awesome, and it feels awesome in your hands. The development is outstanding so far if you're into that, so jump on board team HTC.

i dont want the photon LTE cause it have qwerty physical keyboard and its screen size is the same as my old photon.
now its getting more confusing
i dont need LTE cause i live in overseas wheres there will be no LTE till at least 2016 or so
my only thinking is that the EVO LTE have "Sense" where no matter what mod or theme i install in the photon will never replicate the UI friendlyness of Sense
but if the phone is not that much better than the photon, then i cant justified the upgrade.
sigh...
if only there's a perfect phone out there hahahahahha.
about S3 vs EVO LTE
from the review i read, it seems that the S3 win in every other area except for the Sense vs touchwiz.
so im getting more and more confuse right now.
what i really want is a phone that have :
-Htc one X's design (i really like the international version, especially in white)
-Samsung galaxy S3's hardware ( the 2GB Ram)
-Motorola Photon's radio , call and speaker phone quality (one of the best out there)
-Motorola Droid Razr maxx's battery life
and prefferably global capable too.
i know this is wishfull thinking.
or maybe is should wait for the new iphone 5 instead ?

Hahahaha, yeah, the iPhone 5 will not satisfy any of your above wants. That's funny. You want a small, dated screen with a boring, dated UI that "just works" but can't really do much of anything? Go for it.
Anyway, assuming you were joking, I don't see how the S3 wins on every front. Really the S3 only wins in RAM, which currently is a useless feature anyway. EVO has nicer camera and software for it, better build, has a kickstand, and what you want for software: Sense. It also has a nicer screen that doesn't look like an episode of Spongebob Squarepants.

Im going to have to disagree on the extra ram being useless, I owed a Evo for over 2 months before selling it and getting a S3 and without a doubt the extra ram makes a great differences with a resource hungry UI like sense and touch wiz. Case and point, the multitasking, the loading it does when you hit the home button and occasional slow down switching from app to app. A lot of you users will be in denial that you actually have a problem but trust me I noticed it. One just has to look at your available ram when using your phone and see how low of ram it actually gets when using your phone. While on the GS3 you constantly have over 1gb remaining.
