The Brick Bug - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have passed the last 3 hours searching about this since I saw it on another post.
What is the brick bug??
According to my readings, this is related to ICS leaks flashing for sgs2 and galaxy note on roms and based kernels...and u can hardbrick ur phone when u do wipes / resets erasing partitions on the emmc.. kind of..
Masters like Chainfire and many others (my bad i forgot their names but they know who they are).. have provided explanations and links to this info. 1+ to KennyLegend for posting the link I read in the other thread.
So, after checking my s2 with Chainfire's app. I got the damn 0x19 chip which means I have the bad one but reading and reading it seems that for kernels based on the 4update source its kinda safe... But as I am not a developer and just and user Im still confused a lil bit about this...
And I know there is info missing for the readers on this thread... Im sorry really .. Im still confused and Im opening this thread with the intention of understand better the issue, so that I beg to the real masters that please clear all our doubts..
I.e. : what are the safe kernels based on the safest update?
And are we safe running xxlpxxx stock rom??
What flashing junkies need to know??
Is it possible to brick our device now since this bug was found on may??
And many many more doubts that will come up...
Thanks

you mean the one whereby when you are using a kernel with the brick bug in it and you clear data, cache, you will brick your phone in the process right?

Hi
I've got the same (maybe) Problem here
Also i have that
VYLOOM
Revision 0x19
eMMC Chip on my GT-I9100
I have the free German Version (Country Code DBT)
And currently using the Polish XXLPW ROM (Kies Release) flashed with Odin over the official XWLP7 also from Kies. Using Chainfires CF-Root for LPW.
Reading this thread in the Epic 4G Touch General Section
it seems that some of the Devs Kernel don't have the 'workaround' that samsung has in some of his kernels.
Maybe of my english or because i haven't the time to read all the 47 Page so far, i do not clearly understand if this bug is only happens if you use factory wipe from the CWM or could it also happens if you use the Option from the normal ROM Settings under ICS.
I will read on and seeking in other sites for more information.
regards
Christopher

We do not have to worry if we are using the international sgs2 (i9100). I think it was for the korean version of sgs2. There are people who hard bricked their device using a custom kernel where they wiped and the phone never came back (it's in the general section). It's really not the fault of the kernel developer but by samsung. So no need to worry guys.

BTW we don't have to worry about it now but what if any new samsung official rom have that bug?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

Relax. There's nothing to worry about. If this happens to you (very unlikely), it will happen suddenly, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it happening. If the 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance of it happening bothers you that much & you want to be absolutely sure that it doesn't, leave your phone on stock & don't mess with it.
This is probably the least responsible piece of information/firmware/app I've seen released in the 8 mths I've been coming here :-|

check the attached images i m running 4.0.3 ics Aut Switzerland
tell me its brick bug i many tym wipe/ factory reset with cwm nothing happen but chainfire app say brick bug exist

The brick bug is only present in ICS 4.0.4 firmware with Samsung kernel (or stock based kernel such as CF-Root) and it's only an issue if you wipe using CWM.
If your phone is stock and you have stock recovery then you're fine. You can delete/wipe cache, factory reset as much as you like. No harm will be done.
In short: 4.0.4 firmware + CWM = Brick.
Unless you flash a 'safe' kernel such as Siyah or NEAK or Speed mod

[Q] Galaxy S2 (i9100) hard bricked for eMMC bug?

Hello All, My Galaxy S2(i9100) is not responding any more.... And I think this is a issue which is related to Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note's eMMC bug. Because I had upgraded the firmware to STOCK ICS 4.0.3 (I9100XWLPG) which is available here. And i had flashed with chainfire's rooted kernel CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_LPG-v5.5-CWM5.zip which can be downloaded from here. After using this firmware for a couple of months, recently i came through the eMMC bug news in Galaxy S2 And Galaxy Note. After that yesterday I downloaded chainfire GotBrickBug Application and found my device's firmware to be vulnerable to this bug. Then left my phone on the table and one hour later when i came back i found my phone dead. Phone was not responding and I tried Charging but it didn't respond...I pulled the battery but the condition didn't change. I think eMMC bug is responsible for the hardbrick of my device. But my question is that I didn't wipe or format my device so how the MMC_CAP_ERASE could occur?? I have sent my phone to the service center...

Simple - you've hardbricked for some reason unrelated to the eMMC bug.
The only I9100 kernel I'm aware of to ever get released that triggered the bug was Siyah 3.1rc6 - all other known kernels for I9100 are safe. (You would know this if you'd bothered to read the first post of Chainfire's "got brickbug" thread along with the posts linked to from it.)
You just had very bad luck. Your problem had probably nothing to do with the brickbug. Be happy, you had warranty left so don't worry.

yah bro i know about that. Siyah 3.1rc6 is the only buggy kernel for galaxy s2 (i9100). So my what can be the cause for that sudden hard brick?? And another question is that i had rooted my phone and flashed a number of times and i had a unofficial kernel as a result the triangle was showing before it hard bricked and i didn't reset the count number. So can after the hard brick will the service center people able to find info about rooting? As we know that rooting the phone will void the warranty.

Yah bro really i had a bad luck . It was my favorite phone. But my phone was rooted and also the triangle was present so I am very much tensed about that.
Maybe, maybe not. Impossible for anyone on here to say. Cross your fingers that they don't & you get lucky/get it repaired under warranty.

If you need help you should be posting your exact model and what firmware you were on and what exactly happened!.
Ive had problems with rom manager once but easy to fix.
To OP: Next time, try using a jig for resetting your flash counter, so in case of problem you won't be
liable for voiding your guarantee with custom rom flashing, if you are able to reflash a stock rom before
sending it back to customer service.
It is 2$ and worth it (as it can also fix a few lesser bricking problems)
I flashed syiah 4.1.5 over my stock 4.0.4 everything is ok so far,i want to install the RR remix rom based 4.0.4 ,is safe? or to make a downgrade before to 4.0.3 and then to flash the RR?
Since you're running Siyah kernel, you're safe.

Just so you know
The developer of the rr rom includes a "safe" kernel with his rom.So although you will be on 4.0.4,his kernel will be automatically installed when you flash his rom.

THANK YOU SO MUCH it worked fine for reading the arabic text and I installed the GO keyboard for writing, I was afraid that it will corrupt my firmware but you encouraged me, and it runs good ... only sometimes brings application not responding -force close- but I'm OK with it, but will be nice if there are some ways to get rid of it??
The instructions in the firmware were probably written before AT&T put out the first Gingerbread update. I remember that thread about arabic in the development section when the phone was first released.

I was making an assumption without really knowing. Assumptions can get you into trouble sometimes, because they are often wrong.
I was assuming that the installation instructions were written before UCKK6 was released. But it may be that it is not fully compatible with UCKK6, and that is why the FC's. But on the other hand, maybe it caused FC's on UCKH7, and the version is not an issue. Or maybe you just need to reinstall it, or wipe and reinstall it... or...
I shouldn't really be posting or talking about this because I have absolutely zero experience with it.

[Root/BrickBug]Help me through this please.

Hey guys. This SGSII cost me all my savings i've been making, and such I can't risk it to go to Samsung Service Center cause bad explanatons given.
So i ask you, how to 100% apply Root and CWM?
Here's my Model:
baseband: I9100BULP8
compilation nº: IMM76D.BULPG
It's a Portuguese stock SGSII with ICS 4.0.4.
Thanks, and please understand why i'm so worried about bricking it :/

since you are on 4.0.4 your phone probably have the brick bug. The easiest and safest way to root is to flash siyah kernel 5.01 or earlier version via ODIN. I believe you know how to use Odin.

Well, if you want to be entirely save, just stay on the stock rom.
However, if you're willing to take the risk, because it's never 100% safe, check if you're having an insane chip and eventually root your device with Odin. Several guides and explanations here on xda (and Google also).

Check the link below for the 'eMMC brick bug check' app from stores, install the same and see if u have got a Sane or Insane chip on ur phone
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check&hl=en
even if its a Insane chip, there is no need to worry as long as u wont do anything silly (like Wiping Data on the stock kernel recovery of android v4.0.4).
Just flash Siyah kernel v4.1.5 or v5.0.1 (tar file for ODIN) on ur phone, as custom kernel's like Siyah and Dorimanx are BrickBug free kernels and will not effect ur phone when u perform 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset' from there Recovery
U can google for some Youtube Guides on 'How to flash Custom Kernel on galaxy S2 using Odin'
Good Luck!

How that program works? Is it 100% secure?
I runed that app and nothing happens. Just says:

Brick Bug?
NO: Sane chip.

Lol,The app has done its wrk already ma8
u have a sane chip on ur phone, that means ur phone is not affected by the 'eMMC BrickBug'.
Still to be on the safer side u can install a custom Kernel of ur Choice Like Siyah v4.1.5 or v5.0.1 for example.
As the Cwm recovery that comes with it will aid in installing Custom Rom/Kernel of ur choice

Take my Advice and Stay on Stock Rom for now and dont toss all ur Savings investd on ur phone into thin air
try things listed below to see the diff on batt life
1)If not in use Turn off ur Data/wifi.
2)Turn Off all autosync on ur phone (E-mail, gmail, Location etc)
3) Use more of WIFI (when its availble) over DATA as much as possible.
4)if ur using Facebook/Skype/Googlechrome etc then SEEK alternative apps like Freindcaster/Stock Browser as they r more friendly on ur batt compared to the former one's.
5) turn off ur Data when ur on a low netwrk signal area.
this way u can get more Juice out of ur battery for sure

No offense, but I think you should try your phone for a few weeks first. Then you can start thinking about rooting, but first learn more about how to use it.
If you want to root it, read a lot first, because now you're asking things that are discussed a million times already.

If you are not sure you better wait for the official JB update from samsung which will be released next month hopefully..Normally stock ICS roms have good battery life. When i was using stock ICS i was able to get through a day without much problem. With siyah kernel you can underclock and undervolt cpu to save battery.
If you dont know how to use Odin search google and youtube. There are so many videos regarding the matter. Just follow the instructions.

Hited my friend, and thanks for the patient. All of you thanks too!
Can you provide me a link for that of samsung? I tried to find but I only see "in Ocotber-November" they will release:s
Root it without using odin. Then you can play with titanium to freeze and stcpu to governate.
You already got a bunch of carrier bloatware in your device. Same happened to me.
I started reading this forum, double checkin' all the time on "what is the safest method for me?", and came across a cmw & busybox zip files, rooted. Then I discovered Mobile Odin and, as I had enough with ICS, went up to JB leak with it.
It was so cool to flash my device in half-a-smoke time, no carrier boot animation, no carrier bloat whatsoever, I'm looking at 1-2 days battery, smoothness with butter project, and a really good loking device compared with my friends GB & ICS (they go like "what tha....".
But the guys are right too, you really gotta start enjoying your device, It truly is...an amazong phone.

Sgs2 ics 4.0.4 help!!

Hey,
So I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 to ICS 4.0.4 before 1-2 months. The new graphics and extra features looked really great at first, but 2 hours after using it on normal applications (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.) It froze and did nothing, like literally just freezes at the screen it lagged on. This has been happening continuously for the past 2 months and I'm really sick of it, I upgraded my phone and my dad's one (both SGS2I9100) using Samsung Kies, ever since that, it just keeps freezing like 4 times a day and I have to take off my battery and re-put it so it can reset since nothing will do this.. The old the firmware I had was the really amazingly going well and never lagged even once (I can't remember which firmware though). I'm a total noob, I didn't and don't have my phone rooted or some stuff like that, expect downloading APKs off the internet lol.
I really want someone to help me in this, I know there must be a solution since I don't think I'm the only one who has been annoyed by this, specially when it happens on a daily routine. I searched over the forums and found nothing. I know there must be something talking about the issue but I'm too nooby to understand the article titles which might be a solution of my problem.
Please help me in my problem it really bothers me and xda is my last hope...
Thank you all.
Note: please use simple terms because I really won't understand, and if you do, please teach me them lol.
Well, first of all your up for some reading.
While you go from thread to thread you'll run into the world of ROMs and flashing.
The first thing you have to know is that your device comes with 4 things:
1) Hardware (dah)
2) Kernel (link between Hardware & OS)
3) ROM (OS)
4) Modem (Baseband for your country / Region)
You are actually on 4.0.4, It's Kernel is known to suffer the brick bug issue.
Flashing is used to get the best from your device, in relation to your personal user experience. You got plenty of options like Stock Roms and Custom Roms, as well as Stock Kernels and custom kernels.
When flashing stock roms you get the chance to get rid of your carrier stuff (bloatware and animation boot) by getting an unbranded ROM (samsung official stock rom), you can either go down to previous versions (Gingerbread, ICS 4.0.3) or even go up (Jelly bean leaked ROM). Carrier branded or not, it's just a matter of choice.
When flashing custom roms you get a whole lot of roms to choose from. The most common are CyanogenMod (CM), RR (revolution remix), Omega and etcetera. These roms take the best of the stock roms and leave the worst, so you'll get a more personalized experience.
When Flashing custom kernels your trying to get the best performance for your ROM, this means you can use a stock ROM with a custom kernel.
Modems are basebands that let your carrier network function in your region / country, so if you flash a modem, your network might not work, so you'll have to flash another modem and so on.
Check all that out and if you decide to go on flashing, we are here to help you on the easiest / safest way to do it.
rembember to read and re-read all first.
you did notice this is now your official post right?
Okay I kinda get it, can you kindly please send me links that will help my problem? I'd rather downgrade with Stock ROM than a costum one.
Another thing, will it affect anything that has to do with my Carier? and does my phone have to be rooted in order this to work? If so how can I?
Many thanks.

try sammobile.com
they have plenty of stock roms.
I'd personally advice you to get 4.0.3 stock ROM. What's you carrier? I could look it up for you while you learn about flashing/downgrade.
That's what I was thinking of too, and it's Orange IL (Israel)
I need you you to tell me how do it too please

The best option for you is to get Mobile Odin Pro, got 5 bucks to spare in google play?
After installing that, what should I do?

You really should start reading. The people who posted above didn't get all the knowledge by inventing it by themselves, but through searching, reading and trying to follow rhe guides. Search for the threads that are made for people like you who are quite new to this

There are 2 types of people: those who do not like to read and the rest who like. Then those who like may not understand. Now, those who do not read and those who read but don't understand actually contribute 99% of the posts in every forums you visit.

When the guy doesn't read it was a good advice to start doing it, because it's not really allowed to ask everything that is allready asked so many times.
When he actually does read, but doesn't understand (which I don't think because he's asking basic question about steps he must take) then it's maybe better to rethink if he's really going to flash something because he doesn't know what he's doing

Okay, so I did some reading and figured out that I needed to root my phone, I'm on this thread which was recommended by many people http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 . Am I doing it the right thing? since I want to downgrade to stock 4.0.3?
Second question, I downloaded the CWM zip and extractred the CWM file on SDCARD, it says reboot to recovery, how can I do that?

Why don't you just flash a stock rom through Odin? No offence but I'm serious, the lack of knowledge you show here by asking about Recovery to me seems to be a sign you shouldn't root it at all, and learn a whole lot more about flashing and more if you want to.

These all aren't stupid questions, because everybody had to go through them the first time. It's just that all the questions have allready been answered here on xda, so that's why you've been told to search and read for yourself.
Here's an article that can be helpfull:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/08/how-to-install-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-with-odin-video/
If you don't fully understand it, please look into the guides in the S2 section.

[Q] I9300XXEMA1 and SDS

Dears ,
I just bought a new S3 phone after the Sudden death of my old S3.
I updated the firmware to the stock I9300XXEMA1 , does this firmware include the the SDS fix ? Am I safe ?
I planned not to root my device to avoid any problems with the kernal or bootloader or whatever (the concept is not clear but ...) , is rooting the phone will affect the fix if its exist in this official room ?
Thank you In advance.
You should spent a little more time in general section.
Yes, XXEMA1 contains fix patch, you can root or flash kernel / recovery with fix patched, which basically all kernel outta there has implemented, as well as recovery, so relax.
If you are gonna flash kernel or recovery, make sure you read introduction first to see if it is patched with fix!
And bootloader may also involved, so I suggest you stay with latest bootloader.
Root doesn't affect at all.
