Battery drain issue. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Is anyone having battery drain issues with their new sgs3's?
With my one it wouldn't last 12 hours without dying. Also if its at 100% it'll drop to 70% overnight while i sleep (6-7 hours) and thats with power saver on, sync off and running juicedefender.
Today I factory reset the phone and only installed flash, whatsapp and dolphin browser. Have wifi on, sync, data, gps and bluetooth off. Havent got pictures of battery stats yet since I only reset it half an hour ago.
So is anyone else experiencing battery drain? if so have you fixed it? and how?
Are there any apps I should be aware of that drain the battery?

I would remove juice defender.
Uninstall lightflow app if you are using it.
Use betterbstterystats to identify any wakelocks. The xda thread of the same name will be able to help with solutions.
Other than that follow general tips on increasing battery life that are found all over xda.
This device is easily capable of much better battery life than you are getting.
Good luck.

Something wrong with your battery maybe? This phone is easily one of the longest lasting smart phones I've used

No issues at all so far, in my case. In fact this is the first Android phone I've owned that has no battery-related issues
Based on my previous experience what you can try doing is (a) install CPU Spy to see if your phone is entering 'deep sleep' appropriately (b) install BetterBatteryStats to identify offending applications.
Even the 'Battery' section in settings is useful -- just check if any apps are keeping the phone awake for longer than you've actually used them ('Stay Awake' number).

ok well ive installed bad ass battery monitor since its free. Also since I did factory restore i charged it to full and in 1 hour 44 mins it used 7% on idle. Going to charge it to full again and use it normally to see how it is.
Only apps ive installed is XDA, badd ass battery, dolphin browser and whatsapp.

maybe you have samsung widgets etc set to refresh every hour or shorter. Or could be Whatapp

That's after the factory reset. Before I had a more stuff installed.
Right now it's been about 3.5 hours and I'm at 74% with light use.

That's definitely not right. Perhaps you have a dodgy battery? Can you find an app that measures the batteries mha. I use battery monitor pro. I will post a screenshot for comparison.

Don't be concerned by this. It appears to be normal behavior on this phone.

Just woke up and about to start work (Australia time). Ive taken a bunch of screenshots from stock battery monitor and from bad ass battery monitor. Will post up when I get home.
Also I installed battery monitor pro but it wont let me select 2100mAh. when I put it 2100mAh and press ok it just goes back to 1500mAh. Battery is currently at 36%.

Make a search for BetterBatteryStats in xda, install, learn how to use it and identify the cause of the drain

Just a guess bit that might indicate that your unit has been shipped with a dodgy battery. I would get it tested and replaced.

Not too happy with my battery either. Fully charged over night and its down to 89% 1hr 30 later. Is that normal? However, you did mention lightflow earlier though which I have installed - Is that a massive battery drain? My battery stats seem to show display as being the big culprit but I have brightness set to it lowest setting.
Also, can't seem to find battery monitor pro on play?

It's wifi, don't use it in sleep mode. There's a bug with it right now that keeps it awake.

I'm on Omega V4.0 and with wifi always on, fully charged 3 hours back and when i woke up it's 95% remaining. So about 1.66% loss per hour in sleep mode. With regular usage and installing and testing different roms and backing up etc them i easily get about 8~10 hours. Phone's made in Korea and battery mfg date is 2012.5.6.
Plus tons of widgets on home screens.

Battery drains faster than usual

I have noticed my battery sucks lately. I know the battery isn't the greatest but I was able to get easily a day of use out if it. Now I can barely go a day. I purchased beautiful Widgets, battery indicator and xda app all last week And it seems after that is when my battery went to **** .I used launcher pro for a bit too but started having lag problems so I removed that. Today I uninstalled beautiful Widgets. I'm on wifi and in airplane mode. As I'm typing this I've lost %2 already. Wtf is going on? I have GPS Bluetooth and usually wifi off. I have use only 2G networks, sync only gmail and screen manually set and set to low 30sec TO.
Any suggestions?

Quick question, which ROM are you running? Ever since I switched over to leaked JI2, every couple days I notice that after running one of a few apps, the CPU just seems to go into overdrive. The phone gets really warm and the battery drains ridiculously fast. So fast that even plugging into my car charger won't charge the phone, even on idle. If I reboot, the phone cools down and the battery drain goes back to its normal, slow self.
I haven't narrowed it down to any specific app yet, but it seems to be either, Foursquare, Great Land Grab, or Bubble Blast.
Foursquare I have, I don't remember when I installed it. I am actually just running stock TW.

I get 15hrs... I am not ROOTED! I did the drain battery life process twice. This is with moderate usage. I am planning to do the drain battery process once a month cuz I hear it helps with battery life. Possible that u install something that's killing your battery.
Solution do the master reset if that doesn't help then it can be the battery is no good. I know that this is with the stock rom. If u are using another rom that's maybe the problem. U can try switchig roms to see if this is the problem. I hope this information has been helpful.
Does the master reset remove everything ? I have all my pics/videos on my phone meM. I have music and avatar on SD.

I dropped 2% just writing this. I have only 84% left after 1.5hours this morning...and I have no service during my 1hour commute so I haven't used it. Standby is killing my battery.

It seems as though it drains faster in standby with nothing running. I removed FourSquare last night and have nothing running as far as widgets. I'm going to reboot and see. I've had it unplugged since 7am this morning, after a little over an hour I lost 2%.. not that bad I guess..

I've had this happen a few times. For me, it's usually because my battery status gets thrown off somehow. The phone would read that I have 55% battery life left, but it really only is at 25 or 30% and it always feels like it's draining fast. I usually turn off the phone, pull the battery out for a few seconds and then put it back it. When I turn on the phone the battery percentage is corrected and the phones seems to be back to normal battery use. I don't know why this happens.

This was suddenly happening to me today -- my battery started draining very quickly, mostly on standby (I usually have quite good battery life). No new or unusual apps installed in the past week (I don't use Foursquare).
I gave it a power-down/battery pull; no adjustment in the % as described in the post above, but it seems to be draining more normally now. Weird....

Same thing happens to me every couple days. Rebooting the phone fixes it every single time though, so it's not a big deal if I catch it in time. If I didn't catch it, I'd estimate my phone would be drained (even in standby) within 4 hours or so.

Same here, I rebooted after removing FS and some other apps/touitur and got 1day 13hrs on the next charge with pretty moderate use. So whatever it was, it's gone now. If it was FS hopefully it's fixed soon.
Had a similar experience, with battery % entering freefall every time I turned the phone on. Two things helped:
1. I did the drain cycle. Drain the battery completely till it shuts off and charge it to full while off. This does not 'fromat/form' the battery in any way it just helps the phone to calibrate the meter.
2. I uninstalled few apps that I suspected were draining the battery.
I advise you install JuicePlotter and see the graph of battery drain. You'll be able to tell if the phone is entering standby or not. Thanks to some culprit apps (still figuring out what it was exactly) my phone was not entering standby at all hence the crap battery life.

Can somebody help. My sgs3 battery seem to drain like a loose drain. I charge 100% at 12.30am and go to sleep but by 5am battery is completely drained and phone is dead off. Did you recently connect to Kies because I was having probs with my SGS2 getting really hot and losing power as a result of Kies/a dodgy USB lead?
A factory reset solved it however ( remember to back up ) but sometimes just removing your battery for 90 seconds to reset the values works.
Good luck.

Turn off Google backup, face awake, try that for starters
First of all, switch off your phone for a while to see if there is problem in battery or its the apps you are running. If you think it is a stupid step,
Then try using some software like JuiceDefender or something.
In app manager, kill apps that are useless.
Also turn off features like bluetooth, gps etc. if on.
Reduce phone's brightness, recommended to set it to "auto".
Turn off useless vibrations and LED notifications.
You should now see significant improvemance in battery life.
Hope this helps
I have taken all these steps gone ahead to remove live wall paper, auto sync disabled, brightness is set at auto. And its still the same. I don't want to tow the line of hard reset because am not sure that would solve the problem coupled with the time it would take to get my sgs3 to suite me

I use juice defender which manages everything for me, an overnight schedule ensures the battery only drops by 1 or 2%
Sent via TCP/IP
okay so i thought i had a battery problem before i tried putting my phone aside (meaning no games, no internet browsing and no video streaming nothing, just using whatsapp and leaving facebook connected. I also have lots of apps and games installed over 15 or something)
If you decreasing screen time you will notice a HUGE difference (24hrs in my case), its basically down to usage, I have tried over 10 different roms and kernels as well as the v6 supercharger script, i dont ever notice the difference, EVER. unless of course i use a minimalistic rom with almost nothing to play around with, but if thats how u like it then go for that. Id say following all the fundamental steps will take you a long way
my final advice:
less screen time
when on the screen use the least brightness available
decrease stock brightness even more if you can
less app usage
if your not one to constantly play with your phone and customize stuff on it try installing a minimal rom like
|ROM|XXBLG8| IOIDroid Super Slim Edition | Buttery Smooth | V1.0.0 LIVE !! |
or
[ROM][4.0.4] Slim ICS (SGS3) - Clean, Simple & Fast (63MB)
i dont know if this is a placebo of not, but sometimes i notice improvements when i undervolt, underclock and limit to only dual core. believe it or not sometimes it has little or the adverse effect of saving battery
good luck man
And another question, which can be solved through the search function or Google -.-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937080
So here is my experience. Have been using android for years, have had an hd2 so I know how to get good battery life results. For some reason I easily lost 15-20% overnight with just the gsm 2g radio on. No matter what I did it drained fast even though deep sleep was fine, all extras sync and etc were off. 3hrs screen on time in 14 hours and it was dead.
I kept waiting for an update to solve this and it never came even though I was force checking it.
I ended up factory resetting the phone and as soon as it booted up an ota update popped up. Since then I am having nearly 6hrs screen on time in 40hrs,which is amazing.

Greetings, I have seen a similar problem back in our hox forums. I have come here in peace to help, though. Recently, someone suggested bump charging, it's like a natural way of making your battery recalibrate itself without wiping battery stats or stuff like that.
First off, charge the battery until it says 100% while the device is on.
Then remove the charger, turn off the power, and charge again.
Remove the charger again when it says full while the device is off.
Turn it on again, then when it's properly booted, charge again, but don't use the device until it says it's fully charged already.
Mind you, we're not sure if it's just a placebo or not. Some claims to have had better battery life after doing this for once a month. I haven't tried it yet, but I thought I could share it here too.

Just to offer two cents from my experience with this phone.
I recently got a replacement for my s3.. the details of that are for another post, but this relates to battery:
when I first got the phone i started using it right away. I did not charge the battery until I got to the office and charged the phone while using it the first day.
when I got the second replacement phone I already had a second battery.
This battery was fully charged and immediately used that in the new phone. fully charged the samsung battery before I used it.
I noticed significantly better performance with the second phone. I think it was because of the way i treated the battery strait out of the box.
any one agree, or have a similar experience?

After the newest update i also notice that it has a high % drain even if i turn 3g off, gps and everything nothing unusual runs in the background that can explain high drain yet it does.. and i didnt notice that before the latest update and i havent installed any weird apps. I also have all my weather and news on manual update so i dont get what can drain the battery with internet off overnight.. its frustrating a bit.

I get always too much battery drain during night

i like to keep my gs3 connected to wifi and muted while i'm sleeping but when i wake up i always get 8-10% battery drain (in 8 hours app), i come from a motorola atrix which in the same conditions i get no more than 2% drain over night.
i've tried many roms (omega, foxhound, ultimarom...), many kernels (stock, galaxsih, siyah, phenomenal medium and extreme...), and also some basebands (modem, radio) but i keep sticking with the XXLH1 'cause i get less drain with this one. but in any combination i always get 8-10% battery drain during night.
i've seen some of you say that you get 2-4% drain in the same context so i would like to know what am i doing wrong :/

im using the leaked stock 4.1.2 there now, and i had 3% drain in 11hrs between overnight and not using it this am.
seems v good for battery life so far. i know your pain though. its non usage time i want to be high batterylife. id expect 2-3 days from the phone when not playing games etc... im hoping this is gonna fix that now. most reports are good about battery so heres hoping.
in a few days will know more
How is it sleeping overnight? check settings > battery and check how much it's awake when the screen is off, then check better battery stats to see what is waking it up, I would probably say you have too much synced.
you're right, i have too much synced, 3 google accounts, plus facebook, twitter, whatsapp, skype and others but those are the same settings i had on my old motorola atrix and even there i got 1-2% drain, although i was on gingerbread.
i will install some battery stats application to see in details whats draining it so much, 'cause under settings it only says that idle and standby time are the draining reasons.
gonna try the leaked 4.1.2 to see if i get better results, thanks!.

Better battery stats is the best, but that is a lot to sync, I would imagine it's not sleeping well because whenever an app decides to sync it will wake the phone up, and let's not forget the S3 has a 1.4GHz quad core CPU, if it wakes and uses all cores it will drain the battery faster than a single or dual core CPU. I notice the Atrix has a 1GHz dual core, so you should expect a lot more drain especially with that much synced, honestly you shouldn't need Skype syncing unless you always want your skype contacts to be up to date in the contacts app, and Twitter just syncs to pull the latest tweets through, you can just do that manually every time you open the app.

does that mean that jelly bean is making you experience worse battery life?.
maybe it's because the atrix has 2 cores but if the gs3 uses all 4 cores to fetch or sync some data, that would mean it's not very well optimized for simple tasks, thanks anyway i'll try better battery stats

Android doesn't fully support multi-core CPUs yet, which is the main problem, all you can try if you need all the apps syncing is download a custom kernel and change the CPU governor this will change how the system uses the CPU and it can help.
Well for starters, Google Now should be disabled if you are concerned about battery life. Also check for and disable latitude and location reported from maps (they are getting activated by google now) Even if data/sync/gps are off google now constantly polling for updates thus draining battery.
With my HD2 running GB/Froyo for over 2 years, and methodical testing to achieve the lowest battery drain in standby (testing for 8hrs at night) the best I could do in AP mode was .35% per hour which is less than 3% over 8hrs.
I have owned and tested my S3 for 4 months and usually get 1% per hr and in AP mode....I get similar to the HD2 above at .35% per hour but I haven't tested to crazily.
I find it hard to believe and would love to be convinced, that any S3 owner can get less than 3% per hour drain without going into AP mode. Please prove me wrong and state your methods for all to learn.
Finally, I do not find the battery drain to be Linear. I am guessing that a battery charged to 100% sometimes may actually be a bit stronger than 100%. So doing a random single test may result in low drain numbers but that may be misleading. That same test performed at 20% level, may yield worse results if in fact my theory that the battery does not drain linearly...is true. But for consistency, I always perform the test at 100% battery and let it sit in the charger for an extra 2hrs before unplugging it. This way, at least the test is more consistent and more directly comparable.
I now have Green Power app installed and it is able to automatically turn off wifi/data in standby under conditions set by me, the user. I am performing some nightly drain tests. I would be thrilled if I could get between .35-.75% per hour. My first 2 nightly tests failed thanks to Slacker Radio....which held a Wakelock even though I bloody killed it!
I think this could be due to fast dormacy
http://www.androidnz.net/2012/06/at-your-own-risk-how-to-disable-fast.html?m=1 there is an app to disable this.
Read this link first though

A bit off topic but just reminds me of my old Nokia N95 because whenever I was in a network dead spot or just have no signal for whatever reason (Gif fgaff) the battery would completely run dry within maybe 6 hours, and you'd think because it has no signal it should last longer than the few days standby I normally got.
And I've never had a SIM in any of my Android phones that lost service for long so has anyone seen this happen on an Android or is it just a Symbian thing?

When a phone has no signal it has to scan all frequencies for a signal, this constant switching of frequencies drains a lot of battery, it also increases the power to the mobile networks chip to try to pick up even a weak signal, which also drains the battery faster, it happens on all phones.

im using the leaked stock 4.1.2 there now, and i had 3% drain in 11hrs between overnight and not using it this am.
seems v good for battery life so far. i know your pain though. its non usage time i want to be high batterylife. id expect 2-3 days from the phone when not playing games etc... im hoping this is gonna fix that now. most reports are good about battery so heres hoping.
in a few days will know more

Which I am running but 3% over 11 hours?
Any e-mail accouunts? What do you have enabled/disabled? What is syncing?
The best I have ever managed was about 1%per hour and that was with everything off apart from the cell.

Read the link I posted above about fast dormacy and if this is your problem then get the app fast dormacy from play store
If you're worried about wifi while sleeping also have sync turned off and location in settings and disable notifications from play store and disable notifications from apps also

Will give it a try but I have never seen it show up in BBS in the past hence never tried it (I was aware of it) and as far as I am aware O2 (UK) does support Fast Dormancy.
It is not that I an dubious about the 3% drop over 11 hours I just want to get to the same level!
EDIT: To get the 3% drop do you disable everything you mention above? I use Tasker to disable everything including sync, wifi etc...except the cell. But I do not disable play store notifications seperately.

This is what I have come to expect. 1% per hour is reasonable and typical. 3% over 11hrs...hmmm...I don't believe it.

I have messed with this before without positive results. But anyway, since it seems like you have it working...what is your typical % drain over 8hrs?

I usually turn mine off overnight but if I do want it left on I turn my location settings off and everything that requires wifi and don't lose much.
I'd suggest trying better battery stats from play store then after leaving your phone off overnight dump your results (in settings) and then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 to ask about your results

[Q] Battery Draining No Matter What I Shut Off... Why?

Hello,
I wanted to get your guys opinion as I believe my phone may have turned defective and I really don't want to go down the Warranty Route as I'll loose the phone for weeks. And willing to try anything suggested.
So here's the problem:
Battery Draining at very high rates. On stock battery, I am draining about 12% an hour, after 6 or so hours my 15% battery capacity left warning turns on. I figured it was the battery, so bought a double capacity 4200mAh Hyperion Battery. Now my battery drain is at 6% an hour (which is equivalent to the factory battery considering the double capacity).
I am currently on XXELKC 4.1.2 Stock ROM. When I first noticed the problem, I was on 4.1.1. Figured I would ODIN, Wipe all cache's, and start clean. This has made no affect on battery life.
Here's what I've tried:
- 4.1.1, 4.1.2 Stock ROMs from Wipe - High Drain
- Airplane Mode with Location Services Disabled - High Drain, but 4.5% an Hour instead of 6% an Hour.
- Disabled all Samsung Apps - seemed to have little impact
- Disabling Google Now has made zero impact on battery life.
- 4.1.1 BBS revealed nothing - may need to try again on 4.1.2
Any ideas? Or is this sounding like the phone? Is it possible after a wipe the phone, when I re-enter my Google Credentials it is restoring some data which is defunct and causing high drain?
Note: Screen shots are with the double capacity battery taken right after a clean Odin upgrade to 4.1.2. Only ran Android Activation and thats it.
It looks like your phone isnt going to sleep properly. Try a custom rom/kernel.
Have you done a full whipe ?? If not, do so, and don't forget to make a back up first. It worked for me !
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I had similar issues, I factory reset worked, and I also download rescan media root app to disable the media scanner which was my main battery killer.
WHen you do the factory reset make sure your phone is connected to the internet, so it will prompt google to store the apps you have and remote install when you sign back into the phone.
I have performed a full wipe but that had minor impact on battery life but I wounder if the Google Restore possibly restored an invalid setting. I will try this again without entering my credentials and see if there is a link with a restored setting. I will have to give the rescan media app a try as well.

Any specific kernel in mind. From what I've been reading no kernel seemed to stand up to magically solve battery issues without voltage drop or cutting services like Google now from the rom.

I have attached a run with BBS for 1 hour. Nothing is really standing out. The phone was in deep sleep for all but 2 minutes. I did have Google Now and Location Services Disabled as that was eating away an impressive 10 minutes / hour from deep sleep. But my battery life only increased from 6% an hour to 4.5% an hour. An improvement but weak IMO considering the larger battery.
Results from BBS is attached.
I once had that kinda issue too
What I did was Factory Reset and that did the trick for me
How about trying the app CPU sleeper?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I've had this issue before on the i9100 Galaxy S II, where it didn't seem to matter what I did, it chewed battery just as soon as I put my Google account back onto the handset. I believed it was caused by the Samsung calendar bug. So absolutely; try it without putting your Google account onto the device.
Also, your WiFi signal looks low, although this has less of a difference compared to having low mobile coverage...

your first post has a huge amount of wakeocks that arent going to be reflected with an hours run on BBS. If i were you id charge it to 100%, unplug just before going to bed and then show us the BBS log in the morning so people can see whats happening over an 7-8 hour peroid

It looks like the same problem I was having. Your WIFI is always on.

Also leaving your Bluetooth On all the time is going to drain the battery pretty quickly.

its not wifi always on, my wifi is always on too and i lose 2% over an 8 hour standby period.
Its more what apps are using the wifi connection and waking the phone up, thats what the op needs to look into

More information can't hurt. Post in and Maybee there is a correlation.
OK. So I went ahead with your suggestions and did the following
Factory Wipe again from Settings Menu
Went back to factory Samsung battery for consistency in reports to other users
Took out both my sim and sdcard to eliminate those possibilities
Put into airplane mode
Disabled a bunch of apps (ss on next post)
Still bismal results but better than before. 7 percent an hour drain. Attached all the files. Ideas? Google says phone is awake but bbs doesn't seem to shed any clues for me...
And here are the disabled and installed apps
your phone isnt going to sleep at all....something is keeping it awake..try a stock rom ( any will do) with full wipe. Dont restore anything with titanium backup. Disable auto sync on everything. Set wifi sleep policy to always. See if the problem persists.

That last run posted was stock 4.1.2 XXELKC firmware and Factory Wipe from Settings Menu. I also performed Wipe and Cache Wipe in the Bootloader (Power Up + Center + Power). All I did was install bbs and never put in Google or Samsung credentials and disabled some stock apps from running.
If your not referring to factory Wipe, can you please explain further? Thanks.

[Q][SOLVED] HELP Sudden Battery Drain

This is what happened...
yesterday at 7:00 AM my phone was at 98% Battery
Only Flight mod and Power saver mod was enabled,
Every thing else was disabled
Then i left home without taking my phone ( It was on my bed i forgot to take)
Later i returned home at 2:00 PM
And found my phone very hot.
Now the battery is at 14%
It says 88% of Battery was used for Android OS
Then i turned off my phone
After some time heat went off...
Then i turned on and plugged in for Charging
It Took 4 hours to charge 24% :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Can anyone please explain whats happening ???
It sounds like something is keeping the cpu running, which is why android is is so high and explain the battery loss and heat. You could go into your settings and look at the running apps in applications manager, and see if anything is out of the ordinary.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Could be something like mediascanner scanning the sdcard if you hve one. GSAM and BBS are good apps to check wakelocks. The latter is better but it's a pay for app.

1. what rom are you using? 2. slow charging may be due to cable. change the cable and check the result. :good:
Remove new installed apps, check cable, restart your phone...
Now its working fine
Is there any way to find out which app was using my Battery ?

I'd love to hear any suggestions on how to solve this?

2) No drain, just slow charging

The best app IMHO is BetterBattery Stats. It's not free though, but it's a great asset. I have the widget on my home screen at all times. If you're not in a position to pay for an app, try GSAM, but BBS IS better. This will only be good until you pull the battery though so you need to ensure you check before rebooting. It will show you which apps are keeping the phone awake etc.

Yep. Best way to get good stats is to charge the phone full, unplug it and go about your business. Try not to reboot. At the end of the day lets see those stats and what we can find out.
