Swype problem in official ICS update - Alternative Free Input Method - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had issues with Swype since installing the first ICS, where it would stop working, cause the screen to freeze at the most inconvenience times. I thought I was alone with this problem, it appears not here.
I tried troubleshooting, reinstalling, clearing cache, uninstalling, reinstalling, fresh boot with nothing else loaded, nothing worked and I don't know what my problem must of been and was surprised I couldn't find anything else with it.
I searched for an alternative keyboard that would cut the mustard, I don't mind paying for things, but found slideIt not particularly good on the trial, also I do like the way Swype worked when it worked, so was looking for something similar, think I found it below.
I'm not one to normally worry about bothering anyone else, however after my woes of Swype and getting pretty much to the point of going back to Gingerbread because of it I have been very impressed, you can also utilize the unconventional keyboard layout if you wish.
Give it a go, worth it, for free anyway!

I always wipe before and after flashing.
I always use stock ROM or AOSP.
I format system every Time I went frm one type to other.
And I only use Swype as I'm used to it and even thinking about typing is tyring.

Yea cheers for that oinkylicious (WAC), I stated I do not normally post something, but found a benefit to myself that others may assist from. Personally I prefer Comic Sans - and?!
May I take it from your comment you don't want me to post any more.
I'll just observe, good job everyone doesn't just do that, xda would be dead and buried...

Teksoft Fingertouch, used or not used?

I'm curious as to how many people are using the Teksoft Fingertouch keyboard donated by Teksoft to the Athena Project. I've since abandoned by hardware keyboard and use Fingertouch only.
Anyone else using this only or using something else?

hehe im also a dump the hardware for fingertouch person.
The thing I hate about the onscreen keyboard is that whenever you tap the screen to enter data,
it automatically pops up. 95% of the time I use the hardware Keyboard, and if I'm filling at a large
form with many fields, the darn KB app pops up every frick'n time and I have to close it to continue.
Is there a hack/mod, that turns off this auto pop-up setting? Its really
getting on my nerves.

get a null SIP (SIP = onscreen keyb)
http://phm.lu has one, though i didn't try it on wm6
Hi, i removed the HW-keyboard too.
The Fingertouch-Soft-KB looks great but it's a little too big.
It lets only 1/5 of the screen show if selected pad 5.
If selected pad 1 still only 1/3 of the screen shown.
This isn't much. Is it somehow possible to make the keyboard smaller?
Now i use the standard Keyboard with big keys and gestures and this is still a little too small for fingertouching, but now i see what i'm typing.
Any app which has size between Fingertouch and standard keyboard i think will be better.

Fingertouch can be skinned. I never did it as one of the guys at Fingertouch took care of this for us. If you visit their forum I'm sure they can help out or maybe there are instructions...hell they may even do it for you if you tell them you're using their product on your Athena. They donated, for free, their full version keyboard to help out. These guys are great. Their forum is also very helpful and they respond quickly based on my experience. I'm sure Fingertouch can be skinned/modified to be exactly what you want.

Thanks, i didn't know FT-KB isn't freeware.
Great to have it inside the ROM.
I use it in combination with the hardware keyboard. I tend to find the HW keyboard easier to use when 'stationary' i.e. sat at my desk. But when oot and aboot, its easier to use the fingertouch.
I did alter the registry so that it uses keyboard '1' rather than '5' as its easier to use. Just a shame there's no £ key and the \ key isn't a shift key on board 1.

Yea I use the regular mode. FYI, you can set this in the options for the product, no need for the registry hack. ;-p
I use it alot but the lack of £ sign is driving me nuts ! that is when I resort to the HW keyboard as it is quicker than switching to the WM soft keyboard

I hardly use my HW keyboard now these days. It is a lot easier with FT but I do agree with some of the comments where sometime you can't see what you are typing. However, I have learned to live with it.
Thanks everyone and keep it coming. This type of feedback is useful for future ROMs.

I don't know if any of you are aware and it literally happened overnight but TEKSOfT APPEARS OUT OF BUSINESS and they were in business last Friday. How do I know this? SAT, SUN, AND MONDAY their website was compleltely down and yesterday and today, do the search yourself or type in their exact url you will get immediately redirected to a weird website and then click on TEKSOFT on the top right corner and it will say no results found. I hope I am wrong here but have tried directly from my device the Polaris to purchase from their online shop and it goes directly to some unknown website. kevin

Much as I don't own an Athena anymore, the Fingertouch keyboard made a great difference and I never used the hardware keyboard. For an alternative I used a bluetooth keyboard. Without Fingertouch and the black ROM in general I would've got rid of my Athena much sooner.
I enjoy my hardware bluetooth keyboard a lot, as I work with translations and need to type out big bodies of text. As my fingers are accustomed to hardware keyboards I guess I am the conservative old goat who says "software keyboard?!?!?!"

Does anyone have the latest Swype beta?

It's available on the site, but it involves usernames, and giving my email... and I don't want to do that.
EDIT: I got it. But I need "ADB" or "root explorer" to remove all traces of the previous Swype installation or it won't install. Can anyone help? I am following the directions found here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t/434290-swype-keyboard-acts-up.html
I have always had to use Titanium Backup (rooted) to uninstall swype so that a new official beta would install. The new Swype no longer uses a separate installer and can be updated from inside the app itself so at least that's an improvement.
On the new beta Swype, the alt characters are less visible than they were in previous versions (like a poorly themed version) but my main problem is that it is not taking my system font as it is now supposed to do. The characters are too small and unchanging no matter which of my rom's (dlev on captivate) 20+ installed fonts I choose. Perhaps there is some font package I can install so swype will see them?
I would really like to just get a swype.apk themed like the previous version of official swype since the letters were a good size and font and the alt characters are clearly visible. And a swype.apk that has the licensing functions stripped so does not have problems every time I change the rom. I know xda cannot host these files, but can someone please tell me what google search string I can use to find one of these to download? It would be greatly appreciated.
If I can't get this, I will finally just give up on Swype and settle with Slideit. Swype has been a constant pita to me for over a year since every time I loaded a rom or the beta updated I have had to figure out how to uninstall the old version, resignon to swype, redownload, reinstall, etc. If it was not my favorite keyboard I would have never gone through the hassle. Why it can't be sold and distributed like a regular app in the market and easily skinnable I don't know - I would gladly pay $10 to avoid all the hassle.
I was using swype for about half a year and it was pain in the ass...for czech language swype is very stupid almost every second word is predicted wrong even with biggest option to predict right...and its very annoying to waiting for new version and installing through installer and blabla...as you said, i gladly pay for slideit (and i did) and im very happy with it. More smarter for my language and theme option is just great...
Why not register? What's the harm in that for an excellent app for free?

For english language its great app...but for language where you have lot of punctuation and lot of symbol letters which other languages dont have its pain in the ass...its always aimless and making lot of mistakes.

[resolved] using multiple/foreign language dictionaries?

First of all, thanks for this forum -- rooted my NT (first android device) yesterday using the instructions here and it's delightful.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had a solution or workaround for using multiple dictionaries?
I'd like to be able to read foreign language content using the instant lookup function, but it seems that this is not built into the nook (unbelievable). Being able to replace the default English-English dictionary would also be great. Although this is a feature on the Kindle, it isn't available on the Kindle for Android app (also unbelievable). I looked at other eReader software, but "dictionary support" seems to amount to ColorDict. I'd be more than happy to splash out for some quality dictionaries, but only if I can integrate them into the reader.
The only thing I've been able to find is this, a Russian language forum where the OP seems to have gone into the file system and manually replaced the stock dictionary. I'll gladly do that if it comes down to it but was wondering if there was a less tedious / more obvious way.

I tried to figure out how to change the language to German last night, but had no lucky at it. ("ro.sys.locale.language" is set to "de", as well as the country code is "DE" but yet nothing has changed.)
I think that the B&N Nook shows an incredible lack of foreign language support, and is basically I guess targeted as a "US only" device. This probably explains why the Out Of Box Experience only presents one with US timezones when it starts up. v_v
So frustrating/ridiculous! Yes, it's a "US device" but it's foolish of B&N to ignore the tens of millions of people in the US who speak or study other languages (Spanish speakers alone are pushing 30 million).
I hope the hack I mentioned in my original post works. Still waiting on my SD card to try it out.
Anyway, I posted on the B&N forums about this:
bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOK-Tablet-Ideas-Suggestions/Bilingual-amp-3rd-Party-Dictionary-Support/idi-p/1262799
If anyone agrees please click the laurel leaf icon so that this issue can (maybe) get some attention.
I agree... it actually upsets me quite often that US companies typically completely ignore other languages within the US.
Apple? First thing it asks me is "what language do you want to use?" They built that flexibility in from the start. On Windows? You buy the English version, and you're stuck with English (yes, Vista and later, you can download language packs after). So, then end up having to customize and sell different copies of the OS to every different market.
OSX: we build one binary, and hey, look it works.
Windows: we have to build a different binary for every different language, and oh, some of them might not work, because English is treated specially from all of the other languages.
Posting in case someone finds it helpful
My personal workaround for the time being --
I downloaded the German version of Kindle for Android, which comes with a built-in monolingual Duden dictionary. (Fortunately my German is strong enough for this to work. Quite useless for other languages/ability levels though.)
The downloaded dictionary appears to be visible in the file system with *.mpb and *.prc file extensions. I wonder if it would be possible simply to manually swap them out with a dictionary in the same format?
Install coolreader and colordict, then downlowd whatever dictionaries you need. There are many dictionaries available online.
@wwmhf -- After reading your post I decided to dig a little deeper. I downloaded GoldenDict and then discovered lingvodics.com.
Okay, absolutely no more angst over this issue. Thanks!

Hi, try d/l an app from the market called more locale. Don't know if that suit your need of the dictionary thing, but definitely give your NT more locale to choose from (with most of the menus and some system apps name translated).
I'm on a rooted device with snowball mod in HK and wanted to play with the google voice search function for Cantonese and find no way of activating it since I can't choose any language apart from English US and UK (duh....)
After installing the more local app, I can select google voice to work with Cantonese search.
Perhaps Veronica can considering putting this under the NT Tips and Trick sticky for other poor souls that need an alternate locale.

Hey pal... I´m thinking about buying a Nook Touch. It´s cheaper and more beautiful than eReaders available in Germany. Nonetheless, I´m Brazilian - neither English nor German is my native language. I would like to have this Duden Dictionary for German books and whatever the original platform has for the english language.
How could I do that? Would you make a tutorial step-by-step for me? I´m totally rookie on these issues.
Thanks!

[Q] BUG: backspace after autocorrect inserts characters

There is a long-term bug in the basic Android system that affects the keyboard when autocorrect is used, and I hope someone here can offer some insight and help because it's been driving me nuts for years, over many phones and many versions of Android. Now it's just started happening on my new Sony Xperia X3.
At first, all is well. But then, after a certain amount of typing, you start to experience the Autocorrect Backspace Bug. Symptoms:
If you use autocomplete by selecting one of the suggested words and then press Backspace, no longer is the entire word deleted. Instead, entire words or parts or words are inserted until whatever you were trying to type is complete garbled.
If you press Space before Backspace, the autocompleted word will be repeated in its entirety followed by a space, and then you can delete both words letter by letter without new words or letters being inserted.
If you long-press the text to bring up the CopyAll-Cut-Paste menu and select CopyAll, only the word you were pressing on is selected, rather than all the text.
Clearing the Android cache for all apps and data doesn't help, nor does deleting all the learned autocorrect data. Turning off Autocorrect completely isn't a great solution for me because that also turns off Swype, which I like to use.
I have had this problem with my last 3 Android phones, so it has existed since at least Android Gingerbread. Google searches of this problem have turned up complaints about this bug since Gingerbread, but NOT ONE SOLUTION.
The people who frequent this forum are the smartest anywhere about things Android. Any thoughts????
anyone else experienced this?
Has anyone else here even experienced this bug?
God, yes! This is such a PITA, especially when typing om forums or fb-comment sections..! Please tell me you solved it?!
I recorded the bug to show it better - why is no-one else complaining about this, googling gets me no answers. FYI it happens to all keyboards I've tried, incl Google and Xperia.

Good video!
I solved the problem by switching to a keyboard that has its own autocorrect. Not all do. Many use the built-in autocorrect. I'm using SwiftKey now. It had its own autocorrect.

Samsung Keyboard!!!

Can someone please tell me how to teach the STUPID Samsung keyboard on the S6/Edge a new word, or a word/letter that I don't want it to keep autocorrecting every single time!!
I've been trying to teach it "N" or "n" as I use that in place of "and" quite often, but every single time since the phones been released, its been turning it into "now" or "no". So frustrating.
This is just a single example of hundreds of my words it corrects, for instance, when I write "Hi" at the top of an email, it changes it to "His". Seriously, what kind of a joke is this by Samsung on all of us?
In the settings it says that any words entered repeatedly over a week will be added to the dictionary, but this is obviously bs, as not a single one of my words has been added so far, and I repeat them frequently on purpose!
Please help me out someone, this is driving me up the wall. I know I can change keyboards, but these days in trying to stand out keyboards are adding too much useless crap, instead of good features (please suggest some that have the same features available such as emojis etc)
I look forward to your replies!

Hit the thanks button already.
Don't be ridiculous, the emoji's character code, which I assume is ASCII are all the same throughout the computer world. They just look different based on how a computer or app interprets the code.

Lets not forget the main question here, how to teach the keyboard a new word? Samsung claims it learns your writing style, but clearly this is not the case. Even when I click the suggested word, 50 times, it doesn't add it to the dictionary, so this topic is still open.
As for the emojis, of course each app interprets the same code with its own images, but I'm after the end user experience here, so the choice of emoji images used are important to me.
kind regards
