I'm new to android and just bought my s3 so forgive me if it's a stupid question
Whenever I watch a movie, there are two or three black spots. I feel like they are dead pixels. It doesn't show up on a white background nor on my ics inspired background but now I notice it a lot during a movie especially if it's a dark colored movie(darkness and all). Are these dead pixels? Is there a display app which I can use to display pure different colors and find out?

Spots? If what you are describing look like smears on the screen then no, I think this is an unfortunate defect with oled devices when black is viewed in really dark environments. My phone (not an s3 but uses amoled) exhibits the same problem and my PS Vita shows it very prominently.
A dead pixels is just a pixel (pretty much a dot on the screen) that is stuck in 1 color no matter what's being displayed onscreen.
There's a test screen, just dial *#0*#
However the black spots on dark background when your screen is on minimum brightness (e.g. in darkened rooms) are well-known issues plaguing AMOLED.
There are several threads around here describing them and their possible cause, and at least one developer has announced working on a screen tweak solving this and other typical AMOLED issues.
Yeah it's only noticeable on dark backgrounds with low brightness. I downloaded display tester and ran the dead pixel test and the smears were only noticeable if I looked super hard during a black background, not in blue or red or yellow nor gray. So no dead pixels right ?

If you didn't notice any stuck dots, then your phone is good. As for the smears, pretty much everyone has them. I guess you have to be extremely lucky not to have them (that, or you just haven't noticed them yet so it doesn't bother you). The software solution pointed out above sounds interesting though. Will be watching that
About Dead/Stuck pixel on OLED Device Display
I have a S3 GT-9300 that I use daily, the other day I dropped it on a hard surface and a single shiny green stuck pixel appeared on the bottom left corner of the display, it was a bit of an eye sore really, But I'll share my simple FIX if its a related problem like mine was
I thought if the drop caused it, then a related solution may fix it, so I simple activated display and went to the home page.
then I turned the display facing my palm and held the device carefully at the top end and slapped it several times hard into the palm of my hand where the pixel problem area was. then stuck pixel went away...

There are a few threads out there that have touched on this issue but none as far as I can see that deal with it directly.
The problem comes when you display a pure black screen in low light conditions. It shows that the AMOLED screen is actually grey / blotchy / cloudy instead of being pure black. Initially I thought mine had fingerprints or smudge marks on it, until I realised they were behind the screen. I guess I might have got a phone with a screen that was replaced, but the amount of people who have also reported a similar issue leads me to believe that it might be a manufacturing default? The blotches / clouds on the screen dont change, but exhibit a random formation as one would expect from a defect. It is also possible to see a very faint outline of light running along 3 edges of the screen.
Naturally this is a situation that doesnt reveal itself very often. But I as I use my phone a lot at night, especially reading ebooks or watching films, you start to notice it more and more where you have large expanses of empty black screen.
What I would like to know is how many people have got screens that exhibit this behaviour and how many of you have sent them in for service or had them replaced?
Is it a common issue and something that is to be expected from this type of screen?
You can test if yours has this problem using 'Screen Test' (its free) from the market place. It cycles through solid colours and patterns every time you touch the screen.
Just do it in bed with all the lights out P), give your eyes a few seconds to adjust and see what your screen looks like displaying pure black.
I'm very interested in everyone's experiences and any input or information you have.

ps: I came from a ZTE blade (OLED) which has a uniformly dark grey background when displaying pure black. I kinda expect this as it is a budget phone (albeit with a better than budget screen), but I didnt expect the SGS2 to be quite as bad.
Use "screen adjuster" from the market and set contrast to -60
i have never seen this black low light screen defect. but i am asking you people if any of you have noticed that ugly blurry shadows which are perfectly visible with low light, on white backgrounds especially. they look like marks above the actual display and make high quality images look like low resolution.. it is annoying as hell..

I also have this, noticed the first evening i used the phone...you can notice this during the screen wake delay, or when in a call if you cover then uncover the proximity sensor...don't know if it's a defect but sure it bugs me, i know many won't notice it and will say they don't have this...i will add that if u look carefully to the screen dimmed at lowest brightness in a low light (buy not dark) environment, like early morning, you'll see some "interferences" behind the image, also the darker/yellower left half screen is still visible in these conditions
These things shouldn't be there in a 500€ phone

@elmerendeiro: I have also noticed some 'interference' lines on my phone from time to time. I did a bit of research and it seems when your phone's brightness is set around 25 - 30% it picks up interference from either the wifi or 3g radio. Notch the brightness either above or below this level and you wont see it anymore.
I agree with you when you say we shouldn't be having these problems on such an expensive phone.
It bugs me too - if it wasnt for this i'd have to say it would be an amazing phone
Might give the Samsung service center a call and see if its something they're aware of and if they are replacing screens with this problem?
So i have a bright (white) pixel on the screen...
It's really visible on BLACK and little visible on BLUE background ( not visible on Red or Green background)
the pixel's visibility does change when i change the screen brightness

Sounds like a dead pixel.
Cant be fixed. If there is only one then they wont replace it. You're stuck with it(no pun intended).

I have a dead pixel as well. Its on the top status bar. I can only see it on black.... Guess what colour the status bar is... Yes its black! Lol so I can see it all the time

I've got one as well but is only really visible above 50% brightness on a dark background. Unfortunately the pixel died about a week after I got my S but I've managed to ignore it most of the time. Having such a high pixel density helps a lot.

yeah i have one too, visible on white screens but also on most of the other colors.
They said that they fix such things only from the 4th pixel
Too bad, I have been through 4 Xperia S phones. Two from yellow tint, one bad battery and my latest which has no issues. None of them have had a dead pixel, so I am surprised to see so many.

On my Xperia U I have one green stuck pixel. It amazes me the Sony quality control check. This is my third SXU. First one 4-5 stuck pixels, second one totaly dead and then this one with stuck pixel again. Sony service center and retailer didn't want to acknowledge the complaint. They told me that one or two defective pixels is acceptable.
as far as all my reading goes, the dead/stuck pixels are always claimed by manufacturers that these are "within specifications" whenever there's 7 or less on screens (TV, monitor)and 4 or less on mobiles (as their screens are small).
on my experience on TV though, you can forget about dead/stuck pixels if there's 7 or less. the most important thing to test is the backlight bleeding, check leakage of light on a black screen (that is screen is on displaying a black image). that is more important than few pixels which you will just neglect in time. the backlight bleeds, this you can never forgive.
now for mobiles, its very rare they would have backlight bleeds. so there, we can focus on the pixels. i think this would be more noticeable on large screen phones (4 inch up) or low pixels per inch density. from hereon, its best to test the phone before paying for it, display a black image for backlight bleed check, then colored and white screens to check on dead/stuck pixel. don't ever pay until you're satisfied. its very hard to return/refund/argue when you paid already and noticed the bad thing. unless it happens after you leave the store. so again, its best to thoroughly check it before paying, and of course fully warrantied.
I just bought a s3 and noticed that in the dark if I use an app with black background or a wallpaper there come Some strange dots on the screen, is that normal and could someone please check about they also have it on their s3

Yeah its something to do with amoled displays. My galaxy nexus has the same type of splotches. From the research I've done they are pretty common. I've seen some pretty bad ones. Mine isn't that bad I have 3 towards the lower middle part of the screen. It looks like this
-_- lol. I've seen others much worse. You can also notice them slightly when the screen dims if you know where to look. It is really annoying but from what I can tell its pretty common on amoled screens. You can Google amoled black spots to see just how widespread it is.

Ok thanks I just got so nervous, I was thinking it was something more worse. But Should I go to the phone shop and remind them about the spots so they could fix it or will they just say that's a common problem we can't do anything about it
It's nothing that can be repared since it's a manufacturing inconsistency but not a defect per se.
Usually they are only visible in total darkness with lowest brightness settings on black backgrounds which is not that much of an annoyance
since you usually don't stare for hours on black screens. (Well at least I don't)
It's sometimes annoying, yes, but that's the downside of having low-power high-resolution displays without Ghosting problems.
So i've heard that the S-AMOLED and S-AMOLED Plus technology has "Perfect" Blacks! Like the Blacks don't even "Light-up".
Is it true? Or is it just a marketing thing? :/
Try this and tell me what do u have?
Turn off all the lights in the night and then view some BLACK picture. U'll see that the Blacks are kinda "Greyish" :/
And there are some pixels that are perfectly black.. but they're just Random... :/

Ohk.. So its not "Completely Black".
theres also another problem with it aswell... When I view some pitch black picture in a completely dark room. I see some small rectangular shapes that are "Pitch Black" in that Greyish background. I cant snap a picture of that unfortunately but u kinda get the idea. Can someone try this with there own S3 and report me? :/

Mine does the same thing: darker black splotches when viewing a black picture on the dimmest screen setting in a dark room.
Fortunately I don't often find myself looking at all-black images in the dark. It's hardly a major issue.
this issue is quite common, even on iPads, Motorola etc...apparently it is the adhesive within the layers of the AMOLED that causes an "ink" mark when screen displays black images within a dark environment...nothing is actually wrong with your scren, mine has 2 very small dots...while my other friend has had his replaced because the issue was far more prominant...so there is a possibility of claiming warranty? but this will depend on the country/retailer/etc...but always worth giving it a shot if you cant stand this issue...but yes, earlier batches, the issue was far more obvious...but later ones are better but information from other XDA threads suggest that you WONT find a unit without any marks...period.

I havent seen a thread related to display issues. In 2 german Forums I found threads about various issues. From Color fade, to overall greenish tint or flickering screens.
Sadly I am very picky with display stuff and my Display isnt perfect either. I mostly use relatively low brigthness settings (around 30-40%) and on dark mode especially the settings menu has a color fade from dark grey to dark blue. This cant be seen on any other color.
Its easy to see in a dark room, the brighter the room the lesser you will notice.
To easier check: use telegram, with its blueish theme its definitely way stronger fading there...
For a phone thats 649€ in germany thats unacceptable for me. My P5 has a slight warmish but perfectly even colored display and thats what I expect from a P6.
What about you? Can anyone check their display if thats a common issue?

i have the same issue, also a device from germany.
Even when booting when everything is white, I always have multiple changes between white and blue in the display.
I'm at work, I try to take a picture when I get home.
Please do, Id really be intersted. Sadly we cant do anything about it...
Anybody have the green ish tint on a black screen issue? Seen a few of those floating around as well...
Similar issues with my screen, also from Germany.
My first OLED screen had been with the Galaxy Note 1 and I hated it for its issues. Always bought devices with LCD screens afterwards.
The Pixel 6 is my first OLED phone since and it is having pretty much the same issues my Note had 10 years ago
Great phone so far (Android is still a bit buggy), but the display is quite a disappointment for me personally, at least for brightness levels below ~50%...
Is it just me or are most of these issues regarding the display coming from Germany? Please can people state what country the device was purchased from if they have this issue

I just finished chatting with Google's support.
They are going to replace the phone, but I'm still waiting for their email with instructions.
But first they walked me through some superficial settings (disabling Dark Mode and some accessibility stuff, like Color Inversion...) and then tried to talk it off as a normal property of OLED displays, which I didn't accept to this extent. But hey, that's probably just Google's policy.
Let's see if this was just bad luck in the OLED lottery.
For me its too difficult to take a picture with dark screen. The color change is slightly less than the picture from @man1acc
But i have problems with white color, it is light grey and i have green stripes on white, this is also very very difficult to make a picture.
Here you can see it a bit, but in real life it is much stronger
This is how my display looks like. Quite disappointing, Google has the same problems for years. But the phone itself is very well built, so maybe I will keep it. Bought the phone in Germany.
I have some rainbow effect which is mostly noticeable on white backgrounds. Hard to capture but found it is quite noticeable with an external light source. In this case my monitor. Anyone else have this or more importantly for a RMA, don't have it?
Pixel 6 when on a black background the right side of the display has a green tint shadow effect kinda worrying as it's not present on the left side and seems to only appear on darker backgrounds like when pull notification tab down or in a app (like xda) with black background very noticeable , or is this just standard now for Oled displays it's not the first phone I've noticed this over the years just curious if any pixel 6 owners see similar or should I get it exchange ? Added pic not sure if shows that well though

Not normal. Each pixel is controlled individually.
It maybe hardware or firmware.
Sounds like the display control matrix wasn't designed properly or is defective.
Your screenshot isn't showing it so neither should the display!

Unfortunately not true. If it's an issue with the display, a screenshot should never show it. But it can be visible when a picture of it is taken.
My Pixel 6 (right) was bought first day from the Google Store. I'm in the USA. It has a very strong dirty red tint at the bottom and a garish green at the top. Easily visible at 60-70% brightness and lower. Here it is compared to my Pixel 4a (left), shot on my 3a. Haven't had uniformity issues this bad since my OG Pixel (which got replaced).
Waited to chat with a support rep for an hour, chatted for another hour, and have an RMA device ordered and on the way.

That was a joke id never cross to the dark side lol and tint only seems visible when in certain dark mode apps and not actually navigating around the phone xda app is worse lol so don't think hardware issue tbh
