[Q] Root and Unroot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i am new to root, there is some question about rooting and unrooting
i am followed to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
and successfully done my rooting.
Q1. how tis root work ? i found tat d superuser was install inside d system folder, so i cant uninstall it by app manager.
is tat install superuser = root ? or it jus a root manager ?
Q2. by the thread, unrooting using d same method, it look like removed d root and uninstall the SU together. this mean d uninstaller with the unroot. is tat this uninstaller is mod by the developer or origin from SU developer ?
Q3. if i mod some system file, let say system/lib/hw....so, d files was changed, factory reset can recover all these file ? or i need to flash with stock rom again ?
Q4. if i had a softbrick, andriod system down due to mod d system file, if i still able to go in recovery mod, am i possible to restore d OFW ? download from sammobile?

anyone ? or im asking very noob question ?
i googling all place... seen no answer

1) Usually, when you see Superuser, you're rooted. But the .apk is just a manager
2) no idea.
3) No, factory reset doesn't touch /system
4) Yes.

1 superuser is just a manager that allows other apps to access the root.. I believe
2 I believe you have to flash a secure kernel and firmware. Found at www.sammobile.com
3 you can reflash the rom to restore the files. Always make a nandroid backup though before flashing anything
4 if you can get into download mode you can flash a firmware through odin

Do a nandroid backup. You can restore back to stock by restoring the backup or go to www.sammobile.com and download your stock firmware and flash through odin.

If by restoring back to stock you mean back to how the phone was when you first bought it, as long as you know what version the firmware was at that point, just download that specific firmware, factory reset the phone, then flash the firmware downloaded.
And seriously; is it that much of a time-saver to type "d" instead of "the"?

Triangle and count only get triggered by flashing a kernel (specifically a kernel) that is not signed by Samsung using Odin.
If you flash a kernel with Odin that is signed by Samsung, or if you flash a kernel by means OTHER than Odin, the triangle will not show up, and the count will not increase.
EDIT: minor correction. It was brought to my attention that it was actually flashing a kernel not signed by Samsung while the phone is in download mode that triggers the triangle and count increase, Not Odin specifically. If you use Heimdall to flash a non-Samsung kernel, the same condition will apply. (Thanks oinky!)

Yes, there are several tools available to dump your current kernel, or you should be able to just remove the zImage file from whatever stock firmware you downloaded.

[Q] Flashing roms

Today I flashed my phone for the first time from stock 2.3.5 to CM7.1. Now I'm wondering, doI have to do some weird complex procedure every time I want to switch to a different rom? Or can I just put it to the root of the SD and flash it via cmw?
Also, I read that to go back to the stock rom, I need to flash the whole package back. I have no idea what that means. Can anyone explain what it is and how to do it? Thanks in advance.
You need to find a full package file, one that has different boot, modem and pda and csc to flash in Odin.
which is opposed to the one package containing only one tar file!

Wow. Where can I find the file? So far I've only seen the one package ones. :/
EDIT: Also, do you know anything about the different rom flashing processes? Or is it just one? (Flash all through cmw I mean)

Thanks! I'd click but I've already given out my 5 thanks xD. So to install any random custom rom, I just put it to the root of my SD and flash using CMW? No other special random procedure needed? Nothing needs to be cleared or deleted? Lol, sorry for all the questions. Just making sure.
You have to backup your rom then wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache. Then you can flash ur desired rom

Hey!
Jeah, always do the BACKUP(better in CWM, but you can use the Titanium Backup too[its not backup ENTIRE ROM, only APPS and settings]), only then flash or do some serious things. You never know ahead, whats waiting under corner, if you flashing. Simple flash can break and you get stuck in the middle.
CHEERS!
I am new to flashing of ROM and have never done that,
After reading all above post, I want to ask if I flash any custom rom (Like cyanomod or modified stock rom) If I want to go back to stock rom of my Ace 2.3.4, can I restore the back up that I have taken from CWM. There are following files in the backup
Android.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.img
Sorry in advance if I am asking any silly question and Thanks in advance for the support

Those procedures change from rom to rom,for some you might need to be at a certain baseband while for others you might need to clear cache, data and dalvik cache.Flashing through cwm is the easiest method if you ask me and one precaution you have to take before flashing any rom is a FULL NANDROID BACKUP,you never know what might happen.

Basically, if u have those 5 files like MODEM CSC ... U need to flash with odin... If u jus have a .zip, u can flash it with CWM.

Enquiry about ROOT for Galaxy SIII

Dears,
I would like to ask how to root my Samsung SIII with stock rom. Just wish to that the mobile device is smoother, battery efficient and power saving. I read some thread and slightly understand the step, first download ODIN and install it into pc. Second, put CF-ROOT into the TAR column. Meanwhile, I also found FRANCO for kernel. So, what should I do??
The other things will be, the same stuff above can be use in Samsung galaxy SII as well?
Thanks and pending the response.

Yeah pal use cf root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Read instructions properly in 2nd post it very simple method
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Install odin
Download cwm recovery for your phone model
Flash it with pda button in odin
Then press volume up and power button to go recovery mode
Then install superSU with install zip from sdcard option
Done.
You can set root privilages in supersu program
*search more carefully and do it with your responsibility
*personally i dont prefer root because official updates wont install anymore. I once rooted then flashed to stock
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
U can go back to complete stock anyway by flsshing your official firmware from sammobile.com. u will need triangle away also as your system status will still say MODIFIED.

Using CF root you will still be able to get official updates through Kies no problem, u just need to run cf root again after an official update. OTA updates I dont use anyway but just to be safe dont try and install OTA updates as the usually seem to fail. If the phone notifies u of a ota update just hook up kies and get it.
If you plan to install other root kernels I cant advice as I only use cf root.
CF-Root is a stock-kernel with Root enabled, so if you want to increase "smoothness" and battery saving, then you're on the wrong kernel since it behaves exactly like stock.
I can recommend Siyah kernel. You don't even need to use CF-Root to root your device before, since it already comes with a Odin-flashable version and auto-installs root.

[Q] Can anybody help me ! ?

hey guys.. am still new to the world of ANDROID.. so i need some help please..
i wanted to update my GB Samsung Galaxy SII rom to the ICS rom.. so i wanted to start by rooting..
i rooted my phone and everything went okay and i also removed the Yellow Triangle..
my problem is.. now i want to flash a new rom to my S2..
i booted into recovery mode..
1st problem is that i didn't find a "Backup & Recovery" option as i saw in many videos..
the main problem is that i wiped the cash and the user data
but when i clicked on apply * from sdcard !!
and choosed the rom i've downloaded.. it didn't work.. i had an error saying that E: Signature Verification Failed
so.. and when i wanted to do a recovery using the CWM app.. i didn't find the backup and recovery option
if you have acsess to download mode, then reroot your phone, then you will gain acsess again to recovery & backup.

Sorry, I didn't express myself correctly. I meant you can reflash a stock unrooted firmware (kernel, rom) and then root it again.
okay guys.. am so sorry for the mistake i've made.. my probles was that i was going to the reboot mode using the cwm.. not the up-home-power buttons..
i told you am still new .. i thought they are the same .. anyway...
i recovered the rom with all the apps and everything is okay now.. but
the question is why i can't flash that rom ?? .. even with the right recovery mod it's still doesn't want to be flashed. ??
could it be because of the version of the rom ! ??
and is there a way to know what rom can i flash ??
and i also have a problem.. it's that the samsung kies isn't supporting my device.. i used it once and after rooting my cell it doesnt want to work again.. ??

First off you don't need to be rooted to up grade your firmware. The best source for firmwares is Samfirmware.com where you download a tar. file then flash it in the PDA section of odin. Please read the sticky threads in this forum as there is loads of good advice and guides from expert users. All the best.

actually i tried the same way but when i flashed the CF Root --LPH my phone died !! .. i mean it begin restarting every time i turn it on..
my Baseband version is I9100XXLQ6
and the kernal version is I900JPLPH
please send me a link that works..
There are a couple of methods to root. If you only want to root and not bother with custom ROMs, kernels and the like, use Rachmat3's temporary cwm to get root. Search for it.
If you wanna install custom ROMs, you could install a the TAR version of a custom kernel like siyah or dorimanx via Odin. Steps on how to do so can again be found with a simple search.

This should do,
1) Backup everything
2) Install Siyah Kernel (latest: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/?p=1536) using Odin (tar file)
3) Now you are rooted with Siyah Kernel and a CWM based recovery
4) You can then install any ROM/Kernel of your choice (if you need)
But "Search" - There are countless threads

I think you are misunderstanding some things.. You must first root your phone with cf-root AND THEN, you must flash the Rom with the specified kernel. But you can take a shortcut by flashing siyah kernel. You don't need to rely on baseband version.

okay .. so here is what i will be doing..
1> root my phone using the cf root method,(that will be giving me cwm and root)
2> get into the recovery mode and flash cm 10.1.
3> wipe and clear the cache
4> install g apps..
5> install siyah kernel via recovery (the zip.)
6> reboot...
cool enough? should i proceed?

No. Did you read the first post on the CM10.1 Thread?
You have to be running an ics stock rom and then root it.
Afterwards you can then proceed to flash CM10.1.

- am on stock ics rom
- i'll flash this kernel via odin and root via superoneclick
-then get into recovery mode and flash cm10.1 and the gapps..
-then wipe and clear the cache..
- reboot.
now am i going correct?
btw my query is cf-root kernels they have mentioned kernel versions.. and in the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693) they havent mentioned any.. wont that be a issue?
Don't use Siyah Kernel with CM10.1! Doesn't work!

Hey ma8 first use the siyah kernel v4.1.5 or v5.0.1(tar file for ODIN) form PC ODIN to root ur phone, to get a wrk'ng latest CWM recovery on ur phone
then follow the install instruction given in the CM10.1 thread to install the same, the CM10.1 rom comes with its own kernel that will replace siyah after install

so you mean to say that flashing the siyah kernal will directly give me root? Or will i have to use super one click app after flashing the kernel to gain root? One more thing have you tried the method you gave?
Yes it will, no need for any super one click. Once uve flashed siyah, reboot in recovery (which will now be cwm recovery), make a nandroid before you flash anything. Would be a good idea to back up your apps using titanium backup, your sms msgs with an app like sms backup and restore etc. Then proceed to flash the rom, gapps, make wipes etc.

leaked official 4.1.2 ????
just go sammobile website search and download for your country if you want
else flash any country version also okay
Just use kies, it's safer and easier...
About how much percent ODIN can fail in flashing rom to s3? Still didnt receive updates on KIES so i want to flash it via ODIN. Also how many time ddoes it take for ODIN to complete flashing??
Get the galaxy s3 toolkit. It includes odin and a copy of the stock recovery you can flash.
Flashing the recover with odin takes under a minute. Flashing a complete rom with odin takes about 5 minutes maximum.

0% fail if you follow the instruction
just need samsung kies (you need the usb driver, not kies because install samsung kies will automatically install the driver also)
and odin and the ROM (in .tar or .tarmd5, depends, confirm is end with .tar and put in pda
and take less than 10 minutes
flashed my s3 via mobile ODIN pro and it worked like a charm.....
Finally flashed my phone, but with mobile ODIN pro. My question is how to get the 4.2 camera on jelly bean 4.1.2 XXELKC. ? Thanx for all your help guys. ..
Flash a custom rom with the mod .
See Android Development Omega rom for one .
Or find the files and push them yourself to the custom rom .
Have a look in Themes and apps and see if its also posted as a standalone mod .

It depends upon the instructions for that rom you need to read them .
But CWM recovery flash is the norm for most custom roms .

Stock Recovery
If you just want the Stock Recovery for example for OTA, just flash the stockrecovery.tar via ODIN. Even I don't like using ODIN too much, but it's a million times better than Kies and easy to use. I personally recommend using ODIN on the PC if possible and avoid Mobile Odin. Mobile Odin is only if you don't have a PC or really need to do something on the go. It's a great app but don't use it all the time. And I'm not sure about this but I think by just flashing the Recovery you won't loose root nor Data, so you save a lot of time!
Only crappy thing with Odin is that it needs TAR and I don't know how to make those excpet with Toolbox. Does anybody know an easy way to make a flashable tar on windows without toolbox or cygwin (linux).

mega bass beat option
I've read about the "flashing mega bass beat option to s3" and it says
-- install zip from sdcard
-- chose zip from sdcard
-- wait for installation to complete
-- wipe cache partition
-- wipe dalvik cache
-- wipe fix permissions
The question is: what will happen if I didn't wipe the dalvik cache?
Do I really need to wipe it?
