Just had a quick question. I didn't know what search terms to use to get an accurate answer, since the search seems to pick up any and everything related to any of your search terms. I was wondering what exactly prevents an OTA update from taking. Is it the recovery that is installed? Is it having root? It's been a while since I have accepted an OTA for a device, outside of the Nexus on launch day. I have my Razr Maxx rooted, no custom rom. I tried a few of the ICS leaks but they were in safestrap, my non safe partition remains only rooted. When the OTA actually hits should I be able to accept it fine or will I need to go back to completely stock unrooted?
Things that prevent an OTA: ROMS, Bloatware frozen/uninstalled, custom recoveries (safestrap, bootstrap) so yes, when you want the OTA you'll need to fastboot back to complete stock for it to work. Root won't stop an OTA but OTA's generally break root.
You can try just uninstalling safestrap but I've read cases where just uninstalling it doesn't work and you need to fastboot back to stock.

Freezing bloatware has never prevented me from getting and OTA. Custom ROM and bloatware removal has/will.

What is the difference between freezing and removal, from a technical standpoint? I rooted my Razr using CASUAL and then installed Titanium Backup Pro and have been zapping the Verizon bloatware. I do want the stock ICS when it comes out. I guess I could reinstall the bloatware from backup and then freeze it rather than uninstalling. I don't care so much if the OTA doesn't install, I can troubleshoot that, but I don't want the OTA to brick my phone, that's the main concern.
The main reason I don't want the bloatware on there is that I don't want there to be any danger of clicking on anything that will make my monthly bill go up. Sometimes I let my girlfriend or other people use my Razr and if they manage to get a $10 monthly charge on my bill because they just had to see NFL Mobile or something similar, I'm gonna be pissed
I'm fairly sure it just changes the extension to .apk.bak, but I could be wrong
So, I have bloatware frozen, but none uninstalled. If ICS /is/ released on the 12th for the Verizon RAZR, I should be able to get it OTA?

Yes, at worst case scenario: You might have to unfreeze everything, Install OTA RootKeeper, use OTA RootKeeper to a> Backup your root and B> Temporarily unroot your device.
On the last OTA that I received, I was not able to install the OTA until I ran the Temp Unroot from OTA RootKeeper, then the OTA went smoothly after that.

Apps in preinstall folder are required by OTAs those are the real bloats. Any other system modification will be verified too, like build.prop, init.d CWM and so on..
Remember an OTA update is an incremental update wich will check any required system piece, especially those I've mentioned.

OK. So I have the pull down button mod. Will this get in the way? I've not removed any bloat or yet (was waiting for updates). All I have is pull down mod and root.

Yes, it's a system modification. You'll need to flash stock rom to flash an OTA update.
When installing an OTA you can press both volume buttons at the same time to to see dialog, and if anything fails you will have filename and directory of failed checks. And it won't auto reboot until you tell it too. I found the problem files for the ics leak from early April leak and was able to install without wiping.

See I'm not fussed about wiping. Id quite happily have stock ICS and mod it from there. Looks like I'll be hacking some way or other to get the official anyhow as I'm on linux. Unless someone can point me to a UK suitable stock rom I can fast boot or add flash from linux. I have add setup if that helps. My system version is 167.26.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't have any bloatware frozen and no system mods done so I guess once the OTA hits, as long as safestrap uninstalled smoothly, I should be good to go. Ill check out ota root keeper here shortly.

Uninstalling su wont get rid of root access. I think the easiest way to do this is re flash through rsd. Although im probably wrong.

So, is it possible to root a droid razr and still get new ota's direct from verizon? or once you root, is the only way to get an ota through xda and other forums? I like having root, but i love getting updates direct from verizon so i dont have to deal with finding the right one, installing it thru recovery or what ever it is on motos.. Side note, i had a htc incredible that i rooted and put roms on and all that cool stuff you can do after you root. but i just dont want to go thru all of that just to update, when the only reason i want to root, is to have the OPTION of doing other things to the phone.

If you use Voodo Root Keeper, you can keep root through the upgrade process.
I did it on the last OTA.

You are correct that i didnt develop anything...i didnt even start this thread....also, this isnt JUST for devs, its for questions about the development of the android system on the Droid Razr. I am pretty sure that my questions are relevant to this thread....This thread is about rooting and over the air updates...i'm pretty sure thats covered under development....Now this thread is going off topic...so lets stay on topic...

Voodoo OTA Root keeper.
I have OTA RootKeeper. The update fails after the process completes and then reboots. Wants to download again (.181 Update)

Seems like 181 wont take over a rooted device.

I'm stock rooted, got the notification this morning, used OTA Rootkeeper to backup su, applied update, restored root. No un-rooting required.
You need to be stock with no bloat removed for this update to work. If anything's frozen in TiBU it will not work. Custom ROMs obv will not work as well. Fully stock, rooted or unrooted only.
As for the update, meh.

It's just the way Motorola names their updates. It's always named the version you should be on to use it. The update to 748 was called 744. The update to 173 was called 748 and so forth.

So mistakenly, I ran the update without unfreezing the bloatware in TiBu
The update went through but now I lost root access
Do I need to reset my Razr back to stock in order to re-root it or what its the best course of action?

Theres no reason you should have an issue. As I updated of this file. I pulled it directly from ota i didnt get it from someone else I pulled it myself.
Besides those 2 anyone else have troubles. Also if you installed speak up. Also I didnt loose root on this update at all didnt have to restore or nothing.
So first I used TB and defrosted bloat...
I am rooted with stock Rom.
Used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and it was very easy to unroot.
1) Voodoo Root Keeper>Protect Root>Temp. Un-root
2) Download and install 6.12.181 OTA
3) Use Voodoo to re-apply root
I'm sorry to say this but "it was so easy even a caveman could do it"
Everything back to normal...I'm not sure if my sq_lite hack for hotspot works however as my Razr is my secondary phone, so my Razr is not active with Verizon for now. I may switch back from my Rezound for a while tomorrow. I go back an forth with these 2. Weird I know.

i just bought the droid razr maxx. there is supposed to be an OTA update to ICS soon. my question is, will i be able to switch back and forth from new rom and current rom? just wondering incase i dont like it. will it prompt me when the update is available, or will it do it automatically? also will it keep my current apps and settings after the update?
Once you upgrade thats IT, your stuck with the new, your apps should be fine if your stock and unrooted. The phone will inform you when an update is available, or you can check for updates to try to grab it sooner depending on the rollout schedule.

You will want to get the VooDoo OTA Root Keeper for free in the market.
Install, back up root.
When your update hits, go back into the app and select "temp un-root".
After the update, go back to the app and restore root.
Its been hit and miss for some ppl on the last OTA, has worked for me everytime tho.

Also don't freeze or delete any "bloat" as that can mess up your ability to update.

What about safestrap. If we are running sick rooted GB, OTA comes out, unfreeze all the boat, do I need to uninstall safestrap as well?
Many people have had trouble installing the leaks if they have SafeStrap and friends installed.
That doesn't mean an OTA update will fail though.

When I restore the backup I made during the Safestrap install, it wipes out both root and Safestrap. But I made the backup as soon as possible before making modifications.
Can I unroot with voodoo and successfully install ICS OTA? I am currently on stock and rooted and have unfrozen all bloatwares. And have already received the update file.

Well I'm sort of a "noob" to this stuff myself, but logic would tell me that if your phone was in a state not to be able to obtain the "pushed" or "pulled" ota, then you would never have gotten it. In short, if you were able to download it, then yes, you should be able to install it. And being rooted won't affect that, but I believe you will lose the root anyway during the update.
Yep! I was able to upgrade by simply using voodoo to temporarily unroot then apply the OTA. Voodoo was able to restore root and conformed with root checker.
ICS isn't living to expectation so far.
Done.
Did the OTA leave all your apps? Glad to know Rootkeeper can retain root after the update. Not sure why but I thought this update was going to leave us having to let the market replace everything like a restore.

Can someone advise on the ota update.. I don't quite understand entirely boot loaders and such.. My note 2 is stock rooted. I don't think I will ever Change roms, but I want to stay rooted.
What is the verdict for someone like me? I do not want to block ota then miss other important updates, but I do not want to lose root either.
Please advise.
Again, sorry for such a basic question. I am still transistioning from iPhone world

Just block it. Sure devs will find a way to root and unlock again soon. At that point, you can restore the SDM 1.0 and get later updates if you need them.
You're sure to lose root within 5 days if you don't.
Ok, based on what you say you don't want to rom but you want root. That is where I am. There is an app called voodoo ota rootkeeper in the play store. It is free. Install it and use it to backup root. Take the update and use voodoo to restore root.
That will get you root and a locked bootloader. Which is where I read you want to be. But remember you may be stuck with a locked bootloader forever.
That said consider this. Pass on the update for now. You can always update to it later to get the next update. By waiting you keep your options open and miss nothing.

Yes, although I believe it's "Un-install", not delete. You could freeze it as well, if you have the paid for version.

I have a Note 2 that was rooted using a root-injected stock OS. Unfortunately, the OTA got me this morning and I have lost root. At the following link several folks have replied that they were able to get their Note 2's rooted after the OTA. What do you guys think? I don't want to brick my phone but I sure need Root-Explorer and Titanium Backup.

I can now confirm that, if you have a rooted, stock Note II and lose root through the OTA, you can go the Odin route with a rooted stock image and successfully root the device. Additionally, if you install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper after rooting the device, you can then, do the OTA and restore root using the Voodoo app. Instructions and files are available at:

I can confirm that a handy dandy combination of:
1. Deferring the update
2. Rooting via ExynosAbuse
3. Backing up root via Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
4. Updating
will maintain root with the latest Verizon Galaxy Note 2 update.
I am now I605VRALL4and my Device Status says "Normal" since I haven't flashed anything.

I did what you did and I am modified. I did the light sabre mod. But I don't think that would do it.
