Sleep of death? - HTC EVO 3D

Wondering if that is what I am experiencing? I'm running mean ROM 4.3 and my phone (I think) is randomly shutting off. When I hit the power to wake the screen nothing, but only once the notification light was flashing and I still couldn't wake the phone.
Pretty annoying to have to do batt pulls all the time.
Anyone get this and know a possible fix.
Also I flashed the stock kernel because I thought the screen off under bolting was causing this, but no.

I'm currently running MeanROM ICS, but if I remember right, Mean 4.3 was a little flaky. I recommend you run 4.2 with Dodova 5.4 (I believe it's 5.4) as that was the most stable setup for me on the GB version of Mean.

Stopped by the IRC chat earlier and was given this. Worked for me. Thanks for all your work. I take it this has been a developing issue..?
I'm assuming that sleep of death us the phone not sleeping. Is this true? Hate to assume and install a clockwork file for something I don't need.

Opposite rather. Phone not waking up and essentially shutting off. Goes to sleep, and never wakes up, hence, sleep of death
Huh, that's what that was. Had it happen with 2.3 wiped and updated to 2.4 and it seems to be okay. Wondered if it was only me.

Permanantly never wakes up? I'm having an issue with the phone sleeping. I usually just have to hit the power button a few times.

I've been having this problem rather frequently as well.
Wheww...I'm relieved it's not just me. Started happening to me yesterday with Blackhole 4.2. I'd press the power button to wake my phone and nothing...just like it's off, except that it won't turn back on until I pull the battery first. Reflashed everything and then it worked most of the day then started doing it again. Also nearly tanked my battery.
Anyway, gonna flash SC and this patch and see how that goes.
Just out of curiosity Adrynalyne...what is causing this that the patch fixes?
So we finally have the name for this problem.. I was having a hard time looking for info on this problem with no luck and just switched back to dl30. This problem always drained my battery pretty bad after I battery pulled.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thank you so much this fixed the problem I was having. When my screen would go to sleep it would not wake the phone up until I pressed the power button 3 times and the lock screen would come on....thanks again
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I don't know if this would help anyone but I'm curious to know if it's the case for anyone else:
For those of you who have not applied this patch that are having problems getting your screen to come back on until you pull your battery, does it unlock if you hit the power button and the volume keys a couple times?
When I was having this issue, I just got into the habit of squeezing both sides of my phone (power button and volume up key) twice and my screen would always come back on.
Somehow or another, it seems to have stopped. Not sure what I did to make it stop since I've done so much trying to figure out an unrelated issue. I never looked through the logcat to see what was happening back when I was having the screen lock issue, so now I am curious.
I remember this was a common term used in Windows Mobile development (Omnia, Omnia II)
Which is where I first admired Adryn's work
Thank you for making my devices the way they should have been

thanks for the patch. i didnt know what the hell was wrong with my phone.
Installed SC 2.4 and the patch, but I'm still getting the sod. This is really driving me crazy now and there seems to be almost no information out there. I ran the stock bloated rom for several days without any problems so I'm just about to the point of going back to it.
For informational purposes, I'm running SC 2.4 with ADW EX Launcher. The only apps I've installed other than what comes with SC are Beautiful Widgets, PowerAmp Pro, Switchpro widget, and HanDbase. I do not have a theme installed.
I patched this file yesterday and everything was fine. Woke up this morning to a phone that was off and it has been doing it intermintly all day long. I'm flashing again now. We'll see.

Doubt it'll work. I've re-flashed the rom and the patch several times and it hasn't worked for me. FWIW, it does the same thing with Blackhole 4.2. The only thing that has worked for me is to go back to the original stock eb01 rom.
Also should probably mention I'm running the non-voodoo version. Anyone have any thoughts as to whether I'd have better luck with the voodoo kernel or would it make things worse.
Strangely enough, I loaded this up today for occasional lag at wake up, not for sod & now I've seen sod... Might be an app I just loaded tho. Anyone ever try process monitor widget? It has a setcpu type function & I'm not so sure it wasn't the culprit
Sent from my SuperClean'd SGS
I've loaded the patch, but haven't had a chance to test if it works.
When it happened to me (SOD), it was only when running on battery, never when the charger was plugged in. I'm just waiting for my batt to charge back up to full, then I'll pull it off of the charger and see if it reoccurs.

Who is suffering from wake up lag?

Okay so i got this issue where i have wake up lag. anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds depending how long the phone has been asleep.
this was before and after factory reset.
anybody else has this?

Do you guys use an underclocker like setcpu or cputuner for screen off? I was noticing wake lag, along with the screen not fading in properly. I would see a quick flash of the current open app before the lock screen would appear instead of the smooth fade from black. In my case, I suspect it's from under clocking. I decided to uninstall the underclocker since I'm not noticing that much improvement from it. So far my wake lag is resolved.

nope its basically stock other than it being rooted. side loading enabled too. buts that pretty much it. i also formatted my memory card thinking it had to do something with that but not it still does it.

Yep same here...it's really starting to annoy me...I flashed back to stock 1.5.7 and initially it looked like it was resolved but then it came back. I upgraded to 1.8.3 and saw the same wake up lag (2-3 seconds). This is all stock no 3rd party apps installed yet. I noticed that when the phone is plugged in it responds really fast without lag must be a suspend thing to save battery when not plugged in. I rooted, installed gladiatrix and etc. still a problem. Really annoying the hell out of me.

I get the same problem, rooted, unrooted, all P Roms and with or without widget locker. When my missus tried to unlock the phone once, she locked it again about three times as she kept re pressing because it didnt respond.
same here... wake up lag... dont know why.... im rooted, sideloading and gladatrix 3
im using setCPU to underclock on screen off.. ill try without it
I too have wake up lag, always. I'm on a US atrix, 1.8.3 with gladiatrix installed. It did it on stock 1.8.3 too.
I'm not using setcpu or any kind of lock screen app/mod.
Same here, so hard to wake up sometimes to go into work.
oh on the device my bad it happens from time to time actually. but on the most part its fine.
I was just messing around a bit more, and it seems to only be after the screen has been off for at least 15 or so seconds? So if I just go on/off/on/off/on/off it's fast, but if I do on/off/wait more than 15 seconds/on I get the ~2second pause.
Blah.
My phone was working fine, then wakeup lag. I started looking at running processes and noticed the browser was using 100mb of ram.
Killed it and all is well again.
I've had up to 10 seconds lag...usually about 3 though. Using WigetLocker.
Sent from my MB860-5G using XDA App
anyone find a solution to this? mine is about like a second lag. rooted 1.8.3 running greyblur
Any update on this? It happens on all pseudo-roms?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I'm rooted and this has occurred for me since I got the phone on the day of it's release no matter if it's rooted or what p-rom is installed. Sometimes the only way I can get it to wake up is to hold the power button in until the power down prompt wakes it up (though this isn't a frequent occurence).

Do you mean randomly some time after plugging in the charger, but not the 100% notification?
Screen turns on when a charger is plugged in, and also at 100%. A custom ROM can fix the 100% notification.
randomly, comes on about 1-2 minutes after plugging in
i don't have the answer, but i think we're talking about powering the phone off then charging. it's supposed to just show a battery pic but is powering back on. it might be the kernel you're using. that's what people said it was when i tried Sprint's version. mine didn't power back on with this model, but i haven't tried it lately.
using Zedomax stock kernal, phone is off ,plug in to charge normall battery pic will appear after a minute or so it will boot up on it's own

Can't help but sure sounds strange... Have you tried to reflash and see if the problem persists?

Make sure that the rom you are using is one which is designed for the SGS i777 phone.
It might even be a good idea to re-download the rom just incase the first download
some how got corrupted during downloading.
Do a clean fresh "wipe data/factory reset" and re-flash the rom but don't flash any custom
kernels and don't install any apps at all until you have had enough time to see if the
problem still persists.
Flashing roms like any of the i9100 rom or any other rom which was not
intended for our phones can cause unexpected and random issues.
Good Luck!
I have the same problem. I turned off the phone to charge up, a min later, the phone automatically turns on by itself. I rooted it with Zedomax kernel (SGH-I777-ATTGalaxyS2RootStockZedomaxKernel) before. Could this be the cause? Any other users have the same problem?

Not true. There are minor differences between i777 ROMs and GT9100 ROMs. The main differences are the radio, kernel, and button mapping; which have all been fixed with Hellraiser and HapticFix.

My phone does the same thing. I don't consider it to be a problem because my phone is rarely ever turned off. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. If it bothers you enough, you could always do a warranty exchange. Personally, I'd rather live with a minor annoyance, than have AT&T send me a refurbished replacement.

You can try out nomoarpowah app. It replaces the battery charging 'off' screen with one that has reboot controls and shows the time.
It might be able to stop the phone from booting itself. Not to mention it's really cool and will only work on Samsung phones.

Try Entrophy's kernel to see if it does the same. Screen off charging is controlled by the kernel from what I'm told. When I was running MIUI it use to do that until they added the function in the kernel.
EDIT:
I just decided to try it since I never charge that way....lol and mine did it as well.
ah well.... I think this may be an issue.

Well if it's any consolation my phone is doing it too. I guess I never left it off long enough. Starts right up after a minute or so.
But once this issue gets figured out I'm sure you'll really like the app. It's good to turn off the phone every once and awhile. And with it you can set it to boot the phone when it's done charging or at a specific time.

I'm also having this problem. Is it hardware? I have the latest unnamed rom. Phone won't stay off no matter what...I've tried pulling the battery and everything.
I don't have this issue on miui if it helps...
IIRC, I also didn't have the issue with UnNamed, but its been a while since I ran that.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
i am having the same issue, using a zedomax kernel, if anyone has a solution i would like to hear it, i like to be able to shut the phone off when charging it some times, it seems to charge faster when its off
This is a known issue with my kernel's 11/23 release, and ONLY that release for my kernel, it was a result of adding support for the Interactive governor.
I have no clue what the results might be for Zedo's kernel - he released one kernel, lots of people had problems with it, then he disappeared. He probably enabled Interactive governor too.
It could also affect CM7, I know for a while CM7 builds had issues with not supporting LPM at all - CM7 devices would go to the bootanimation and stay there.

Phone Randomly Shuts Off

I've only had this happen a few times and was wondering if anyone had this happen to them also. I'm rooted and run custom roms, it doesn't seem to be rom or kernel dependent.
For example, I had my phone on since noon and haven't really used it since then except a few times to check the time. I just pulled my phone out of my pocket and hit the power button... nothing. I held it down and it started to boot up. When this happens the battery is never dead (it was at 68% with the ext. battery this time), it just wants to turn itself off. It seems to happen when the phone is "sleeping", it's never done it when I'm actively using the phone so it's not an overheating issue.
It's not really annoying since it doesn't happen often, it just confuses me.

still you might want to check the rom and kernel just in case, either re-flash or change.
if the problem still happens, use your warranty and get a new phone.
what rom, kernel, and recovery are you using?
I actually just happened earlier again. Got a text from a friend that she was here, so I went down and let her in, came back up and went to check my phone a few minutes later and it was off. WTF.
I'm currently using Nils newest business sense with the OC'd ICS kernel and the latest Amon Ra recovery. This used to happen on GB also so it's not a rom/kernel problem IMO.
It happens so sporadically (except for tonight apparently) that it's maybe happened 5 times since I got it on release day.
Maybe I have the governor in cpu master set too low? I have it at the lowest of 384 MHz, I've always wondered this: whats the difference between conservative and powersave?
did it happen while you were on stock GB or on a custom rom and kernel? maybe try relocking and running stock for a while and see what happens?
I honestly don't remember, it's been too long lol. It's not worth it to go back to stock and relock considering I like ICS too much.

that's the issue right there, run the stock kernel at stock speeds.
How could it be the ICS kernel when it's happened on GB also?
Which OC? I've read that the 1.8 causes random stuff like this, but 1.7 doesn't.

Not all phones can handle overclocking.
Mine is stable about 98% of the time, it may actually be the extended battery that is causing the issue.

9x out of 10 random reboots are from either undervolting too low or overclocking too high.
I went back to the stock kernel since it seemed to be a little choppy with the oc'd kernel. That may have been the problem after all.

Its only happened to me twice. Once for tethering excessively which caused the battery to overheat. The second time was because I was over clocked at 1400 MHz and it was locked at that speed without realizing it.

Suggestions I got were to freeze fast dormancy modem, sbf back to stock and re unlock using a sbf from peetr or do some settings with setcpu to slow down from heating up. So far only thing that showed some improvement is sbf back to stock and unlocking again but I've been adding apps slowly just in case a rouge app is screwing things up and it hasn't rebooted yet.
