Best user friendly keyboard for noob parents? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up two HTC One S phones for my parents. It's their first smartphone, touch screen phone. As expected, my mom is having a hard time getting adjusted to the keyboard. The HTC Sense keyboard looks pretty cramped. I installed an ICS keyboard and it seem sto type better but still kinda small.
I'm thinking about getting a drawing typ eof keyboard but perhaps i should just tell them it isn't going to get easier, they'll just have to learn how to use them?

Try TouchPal Keyboard........with the classic skin(looks really cool)
There also many keyboards in the Play store......
These are some of the good ones...
-Go Keyboard (Lots of Themes)
-Smart Keyboard (Never tried it)
-Swiftkey X Keyboard (Powerful Prediction)
- Slide it (Never tried it)
or you can also try the stock keyboards like Swype if you dont like the default.

This would be the same I would have told u =)
These keyboards are amazing
however... I have very large fingers so I know the issues
Tell your parents that they should maybe use the voice input =)

They could try typing Horizontally because the keyboards letters expand

Thats what i was thinking about too
But dont you think that he might have come to this conclusion on his own

Yeah, oh we'll think of somethin

yeah, i ended up telling them to try landscape after my mom was playing with the phone and got surprised when she tilt it and the orientation changed haha. sometimes yo'ure so used to something you forget it exists.

Use smartkeyboard pro...
You can adjust the height of the keyboard, in both portrait and landscape mode...
It'll ease up the crampiness a little...

Swype

Just started using Swype. The standard keyboard is OK, and way more responsive than my old HTC Touch HD. But man Swype is good. Can type messages and emails much faster than I normally can manage.
Just thought I'd mention it in case nobody has seen/heard of it.
Can find out more here - http://www.swype.com
Cheers

It really is the dogs cogs isn't it! I started off using SlideIT before they released Swype Beta.. didn't like swype at first.. but now I know how to use it.. I couldn't live without it!.. I was using it for ages before I realised that you can swype from the swype key to the "sym" key to bring up the direction and text editing keys...
Didn't know that about the text editing and direction keys. Cheers!

1GHz CPU, Android, capacitive screen vs 528MHz, WinMo6 and a resistive screen - no contest
Swype's pretty awesome but I personally settled on Ultra Keyboard because I was used to the half-qwerty from my Touch HD.
Ultra Keyboard combines the two as well as giving you control over the size of the keys and a whole load of other options.
Speaking of awesome and intuitive keyboards, does anyone know what happenned with Blind Type? I remember hearing something about google buying it up (i THINK i remember that, anyway) and had pressumed that maybe it would be incorporated into a future model of Android, probably 2.3. Now I'm running on 2.3 and have heard nothing of Blind Type since then, I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea?
Definitely the best keyboard i've tried so far is SwiftKey, even better and Swype (i have them both).
Another vote here for swiftkey, the predictive text (once it's trawled through your old texts and emails) is nothing short of amazing.
Although the way it can actually predict the next word after you finish the current one is a little scary/depressing. Am i really *that* predictable?
I had installed swype on my xperia arc and tried it out for sometime. I was not happy or rather felt that the original default kb was better. I uninstalled swype. There was a different keyboard then instead of the original gingerbread one. I had to then do a factory reset to get back the original kb

i never got used to swype i prefer standard Gingerbread keyboard. was upset it wasn't included with the arc, but you can find the apk here on xda
Or you can just download the Gingerbread keyboard from the market for free.
i bought swiftkey and tried it for a week but sadly it did not seem to predict very well for me.. swype is much faster for me, even if i'm just typing not swyping. i'm always hitting the wrong keys with swiftkey.
I use SlideIT now for a long time, it is personal of course, but for me its perfect.

I am on the latest beta for Swype and have to agree its pretty awesome! +1
Nice, thx!
I use ultra keyboard. Unfortunately it mixes up multitouch keystrokes (registers on key release). FlexT9 is also nice, and it does correct multitouch recognition plus excellent speech recognition (Dragon dictate)
But ultra has nicer option buttons right there in the prediction area, with inline translation, copy paste etc, and better correction after mistakes. Biggest gripe is the incomplete dictionary, no auto training/learning on email sms, bad capital recognition (problem in German mainly). Nevertheless, overall best keyboard so far that I came across.
SlideIT cannot do multitouch at all, bummer, otherwise very good as well.
My friend introduced me to the Swype but I was quite content with the existing ones. May try it later.
definitely recommend swype! ben using it since my X1i
Swyped from my LT15i-Arc
I'm looking for SWYPE for Xperia neo. Can anyone help please?

@ all
I would definitely recommend Swype to everyone. It's a no brainer! Why type when you can Swype?
And here are 7 Swype keyboard tips for better Swyping. It's definitely going to make your swyping experience better.
My only gripe with it is that I don't know how to insert a new line. All I see is a smiley button instead of the enter button.
EDIT: The smiley button is only there in the default messaging app. In other programs, it shows the enter key.

Keyboard Preference

So I came from the Motorola Atrix, and I have to admit, the Multi Touch Keyboard on that was great. What keyboards are you using? The Android Keyboard seems too small and the Samsung Keyboard has no setting to stop vibrating.
Any way to port the Multi Touch Keyboard from Motorola devices?
I'm currently using the swype beta keyboard http://beta.swype.com/
+1 latest Swype beta

I use Thumb Keyboard. I think it was mainly designed for tablets but you can customize it like crazy from font size to height. Use it for my SG2 and Xoom tablet. Best one in my opinion.

Tried SwiftKey X, which I like. Moved to A.I. type Keyboard. (<3 the Windows 8 Keyboard).

I really like this one. I was able to customize it pretty close to what the Mutli Touch Keyboard was like on the Motorola Atrix. I changed the height of the keys to 115% and it has been working pretty well for me. Not a lot of typos anymore. Thanks!
Using swype. Tried it a while ago on my xoom and hated it but since it came preinstalled on this I gave it another shot and have fallen in love!
Created a thread a short time back and myself along with many others seem to really like Smart Keyboard Pro. I was having a really tough time with keyboard accuracy and this program has a calibration tool to tweak it. Worked out great as I was on the verge of returning the phone...

I've tried a bunch of keyboards and this one is by far my favorite.
Just tried out Smart Keyboard (trial for now) and like it. I'm coming from a BlackBerry and am used to holding down a button for a capital letter... is there any Android keyboard that would allow a long press for caps?
AI Type is by far the best tap-style on the market.
Try Go keyboard, lots of setting, themes, swipe and in HD quality.

Keyboard issues - most too small on Rezound

Hey guys,
Are there any good modded keyboards out there for the Rezounds high resolution screen that can be made a little taller?
I've tried a ton of keyboards and most are too small on the Rezound's screen - Swype is too small, TouchPal doesn't even fill up the width of the screen, FlexT9 is too small, the HTC IME mod I loved on my DINC is super tiny.
I like the HTC Trace keyboard but it seems a tad laggy compared to the HTC IME i used on my DINC.
SwiftKeyX can be enlarged to a perfect height, but also seems a bit laggy to me (and I hate the 4 available themes).
UltraKeyboard has lots of great custom tweaks and can be made the tallest of any of the others, but the typing and swiping accuracy isn't the best.
Ideally, I'd love to see modded version of the HTC Trace keyboard that can be modded like the HTC IME - it was super fast/responsive and had lots of custom tweaks (long press duration, swipe left to delete last word, etc).
I like the combo of type and swipe, but none seem very good in the market.
Anything out there that's really good for the Rezound you can recommend?
go keyboard, sounds like it has everything you like

Tried Go Keyboard too. A little on the small side and didn't keep up with fast typing.
The one i just installed that I like best right now is Smart Keyboard Pro. It keeps up better than the stock one for fast typing and has LOTS of custom themes and settings.
This one below with the red accents matches the Rezound pretty well...

Go Keyboard was ok, not great for me. I had the Go Keyboard on the top setting for height (5 i believe) and it's at least 1/2 inches shorter than the Smart Keyboard Pro setting I have which i like a lot better. The keys themselves seemed smaller too compared to the stock keyboard.
I like to type fast and the haptic feedback on some of these keyboards doesn't keep up well and throws me off. Smart Keyboard definitely is a tad faster than these others with the haptic (which i have to have on) and has been very accurate too, which is the other issue i had with some of these other keyboards.
Is the word prediction on Smart Pro as good as SwiftKey X? It will even predict well known names--amazing. I probably only have to type 60-70% of the time and I guess coming from my Dinc, this keyboard seems much larger.
Guess I'll take a peek at Smart Pro
Smart KB Pro is by far my favorite KB at this point and I've tried them all.
SwiftkeyX has a little better prediction for sure but I still don't really like it at all.
You guys using smart keyboard, how do you get your skins to show up again? For me, it doesn't show up on sdcard2, nor the internal sdcard. I gave up on using it because I don't really like those stock skins it comes with

You need to manually add a folder to the internal sdcard (wouldn't recognize on the external sd card (so dont put it in sdcard 2) and name it 'skins' . Then put the zip files for the themes you've downloaded into it.
Now, when you go to general settings the preview of your downloaded themes will show up too...
There's a ton of themes to choose from in their forum's

WOW, that skin is awesome -I just installed it.
Thanks for posting that.
Anyone having trouble getting the skins to show for Smart Keyboard Pro? I just tried installing this skin using the folder steps, but even though it shows a preview in the settings menu, it never shows it outside of the settings. None of the other skins will work either, even the ones that come with the app.
Anyone have any ideas? I have already tried rebooting and reinstalling the app
Make sure the skins folder is on the INTERNAL memory, not your card.
Ur problem is that u use haptic feedback. Such a terrible idea. Shut that off and ur typing will be smooth

Stock Keyboard

Is.it. just. Me but typing on.the stock keyboard suck? The space.key is too small.so when I hit the space bar. It leaves.a period.after every word. . Also what the hell are all those arrow keys for? I've gotten used to not needing a physical keyboard but with this phone I've taken a step back.
The arrows are for navigating the cursor within a block of text. For example, you need to correct the spelling of an email address, website url, etc and you don't want to backspace the entire word. With ICS it's a lot easier to tap and drag to where you want the cursor, but the arrow keys are there as an alternative. They were helpful back when the OG EVO released; now, not so much. As for the periods, are you sure you aren't double-tapping the space bar? Double-tapping on many keyboards will add the period for you.
I love HTC keyboards. So responsive and just the right size. And actually, as I'm typing right now on xda app, I don't see the arrow keys though I know they are there.

I specifically sought out, and installed, the stock ICS keyboard to use on this handset. I hated the HTC keyboard, and none of the others I have really endeared me either. ICS's keyboard has improved on prior versions immensely.

It's crazy to me that you find the stock keyboard enjoyable. It kills me.
I recommend SwiftKey X (in the market, not free) or the SwiftKey 3 beta (register for their VIP forums for a DL link, free, but beta).
+1 for swiftkey x....i bought it earlier this year and love it....money well spent

I tried to enjoy the stock keyboard but today I gave up on it, which is sad cause I liked the stock keyboard on my 3D. I'm using SlideIT keyboard for now.
I like to use the HTC IME and Swiftkey X and my absolute favorite is Thumb Keyboard, reason being is that you can change the size of the buttons and layout so you can have a large or small spacebar or w/e

[IDEA] invisible keyboard

I hope this is the right section of the forum
I am an owner of nexus 5, which I love, just as I love Android ... but there is a thing that I never could stand, keyboard ... the size of the keyboard + the navbar occupies more than half of the screen ... it's ridiculous ..
so I thought .. why not develop an invisible keyboard, it must be a swipe keyboard like "swipe" or "SwiftKey flow" or the stock Android...
you can write even without seeing the keys ... I tried to write without looking at the keyboard and it works. .. or at most you could set up a 'opacity adjustable ... maybe through a Swype on the navbar when the keyboard is active ...
In any case, I'm not a developer, so mine is just an idea
What do you think?
imagine a see trough keyboard or a totally invisible one with only 4 pie buttons for critical ops (symbols, numbers etc)
Am i fool?
(i know there are little keyboards like flesky but write with them is not easy (and cool) as swype ones)
pps: i'm italian so sorry for my italoenglish
I'd use it, or at least try. Ha

I fully support the idea. Will buy it if available in playstore. Fleskey don't support the swipe functionality
