Few questions:RR/Siyah/UnVlt/BT Keyboards..!! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Im not a noob around here I have been lurking for a few years since I had my HTC hero and have been flashing my S2 for about 5 months now, very impressed with the amount of development here ...
I understand most things about flashing etc but am still unclear and have found it hard to find answers for the following:
I have Resurrection Remix 2.2 + siyah 3.3.2 + dualbooted with omega v15 4.0.3
1. Am I better off changing CPU frequencies/governers/voltages with the built in "performance" on Ressurection Remix or using the Siyah eXTweaks app
2. If I apply some settings in the extweaks app, such as an undervolt/BLN... will these settings apply to my second rom? + also, If I change settings on main rom, then load second rom, then go back to main rom will the settings still be changed on the main rom or do they get wiped.
3. I have one of those stupid small mini bluetooth keyboards which are about the same size as the phone and are under £10 on ebay... I also have a bluetooth mouse.. The bluetooth mouse works fine and stays connected for as long as I want, however does anybody know why the connection to the keyboard constantly times out after a few minutes? Very frustrating as I bought it to use with MHL adapter and have trouble reconnecting after its lost connection... I bought it because it was cheap and I dont have a lot of money to spend on that kind of thing, but if anybody has any other cheap alternatives can you post link.
4. A lot of the time recently, my phone crashes when watching a vide with MX player or playing a game... it just hangs.. dont know why, ive had RR running stable for over a week now with no tweaks applied and its still happening...
5. i have 4 copies of every folder showing up on memory card not enough space to copy data to laptop and format... any advice?
6. Advice needed on whats the best undervolt settings for me,I see multiple threads for Siyah _ extweaks but every time I mess about with that I end up breaking my rom and changing it... but when it has worked the battery life is great!
Apreciate anyone who helps or has any advice to offer, I will give thanks to you all.

1 make sure that they both are on the same settings.
2 I'm pretty sure it will only affect the rom you're on. Not both. Might want to check the dual boot thread though
3 try to forget the device and reconnect it/reboot then try to reconnect it
4 did you do a full wipe when you installed it?
5 I'm pretty sure there is a fix in rr FAQ on the op
6 not every device can handle being oc / uv.. If you break the rom on the setting increase it by 25/50 until you get it stable
Hope I could help

Thanks for your help! will try these now
4. Yes i follow the Extended steps to install rom on RR thread FAQ
5. I've tried that, it works temporarily but keeps coming back and messing up... (that was the original problem, it was just music and images. now its all files and folders)
6. I see... thanks

Was kinda hoping for a little more advice maybe

well the only little more advice given may be never under volt or over clock ur beast (GS2) since it never likes the same, they r only done on some specfic issues so keep the default settings
also the duplicate file issues its no more with 2.2 if u fallowed the extended installation steps in the FAQ properly

Do you mean it never works the same? I see, it's never been stable for me... however the extra battery life vs. risk of having to reinstall rom is a hard choice.. maybe if keep even more regular backups it may help if things go wrong..
And I have reinstalled 2.2 properly following the extended which I always do. Still have 4 copies of every file folder, and it's showing up the same in windows as well now. But i dont think it's taking up 4x the space...
Is there an easy way to fix this or am I going to have to reformat memorycard? is that best done on the phone or on windows?

Unexpected reboot / long wake up : kernel, rootfs or build ?

Hello,
I'm running Gingerbard GBX0A on my Rhod100FR and noticed only two minor issues :
1st one, the less annoying :
takes in average 5-7 seconds to light the screen up when i press the power button
2nd one, a bit more annoying
unexpected reboot, last one occured in the middle of a phone call.
I was wondering it this was bugs from the kernel files, the rootfs or the build itself ?
Knowing about that would allow me to test different kernel or rootfs.
Going back to FRX06 would force me to start over configuring the whole system and resintalling the apps, unless there's to change ext2 file or something to switch from GB to FR ?
Cheers
Edit : my current kernel is 1320 dated 5/14
Long wakeup -> kernel.
Reboot -> probably kernel as well, usually a kernel panic causes reboots. Not always the kernel's fault, but the kernel should be able to handle anything without panicing.
Have you tried an older kernel? Some of the newer kernels aren't as stable. I still bundle 1276 for a reason.
Also, please post in the build thread. No need for another thread...

Thanks arrrghhh, i'll go back to 1276, it seemed to far away in the past compared to 131x or 1320 and my idea was to take latest.
I've never tried older than 1295 as far as i remember. I'll give a try with 1276.
I created a new thread b/c i was not sure it was related to GB and i didn't to mispost in the build topic ... Admin can close or move

Same issue, it was running great, fast UI, data was fine, I rebooted then the same issues appeared on my next boot>
I just wanted to let it be known, he's not the only one with these issues
I also have this problem of rebooting. its very annoying. I use the FRX06 and wistilt2 kernel. Wats more annoying is when it reboots i cant even use my winmo cos it still keeps rebooting in winmo. anyone know how to fix this pls?
I decided to go back to FRX06 with stock kernel (1276) and without overclocking because i'd like to use it daily instead of WinMo.
Gingerbread is a bot nicer, ans a couple of extr&a fetures, but is alpha - not stable enough to operate daily.

That one's weird - I've had spontaneous autoreboots to WinMo, but I've never had WinMo itself bootloop.
You might have failing hardware?
Sounds like that battery issue people were experiencing.
Remove battery for a few hours put it in and charge it, then turn it on only AFTER charging.
There's a chip in the battery that needs resetting, this should do so.
Thanks. ur solution has been working so far but i cant be removing my battery for hours every now n then. is there a way to reset the chip on the battery of i just get a new one?

Well, hopefully this bug doesn't hit you that often. You can avoid it by shutting down before battery hits 0 (though most of the time battery hitting 0 doesn't trigger this).
You can also avoid this by:
*Getting a second battery. When this bug hits your first battery, just boot Android with the second, and then while plugged in, swap in your first battery. I believe it should start charging normally.
*Getting an external battery charger.
Last time I checked, you could pick up 3 third-party spare batteries with an external charger for like 10 bucks of eBay.
i changed my kernel n it fixed it. well not really but it doesnt bother me as much n im happy wit it now but the problem is this new kernel im using drains my battery. idk if its cos of the constant red led light. anyone know a kernel that fixes this? pls post link

Uhm, the kernel I bundle with my packages (1276) is pretty solid. You can grab a newer kernel, but some of 'em are not as stable.

The only black spot i faced with 1276 is hte screen not lighting up when unlocking the device.
That happened randomly, and of course, this is alayhs when yhou need it the most.
I steped up to wilstilt2's 1300 to get rid of this.
Thanks dvs for your work and support.
It's arela pleasure to use the portage everyday.
guys can anyone pls give me the link to the kernel. whether its 1276 or wistilt 1300
If you go to ryannathans' "Intro to Android - SD card" sticky, the link to the kernels is up near the top of the first post - along with many other useful links.

phone turning off on its own sometimes

Hi all, I'm running Cyanogenmod 6.5.7 and in the last couple weeks I've picked up my phone only to find it was off, not sleeping. It still has plenty of charge left (I can't remember when my phone last went below 50%), and it boots back up without a problem. You wouldn't know there was anything wrong except for the fact that it sometimes turns off on its own.
My first problem is that I don't know where to look to see what could be the trouble. It's running ADWLauncher EX. Beyond that and the OS I don't know what could be relevant. I switched to CM7 last month, up to then I'd been running GingerLOL and I never had this issue.
Any help or advice is appreciated.
The devs would say do a full format and flash and see if it still happens.

Try tuning down your overclock frequency... if you have overclocked it... it sometimes happens cuz of that... if you havent overclocked then theres some other problem...

I've done that, but does logcat hold on to recent logs automatically, or do I have to turn on "save to sd card"?
I think I might be having this same issue. I left my phone on and plugged in to charge not even for a half hour or less then I came back to it later and pressed the power button to try to turn it back on but it wouldn't turn on. Then I pressed and held it a second and it wouldn't turn on. I unplugged the battery then plugged it back in then it powered up fine. I seem to be having this issue every once in awhile and I am not quite certain why it is doing this. Also it seems like it has an issue with charging on my computer. I plug it and it the computer is telling me that it can be connected to a higher speed port which makes no since as I have 2 usb 2.0 ports and 1 usb sata port. But basically I plug it in with a full charge and it has no problem keeping it charged but when it ends up going down to at least 50% the charge just keep deceasing and never charges. I just hope that I can make it stop this as it is getting quite annoying maybe it is just the battery or something but I can't see how as it isn't even 6 months old.
I've tried using Logcat but unless you set it to save the log every few seconds it doesn't help. If there's an error it doesn't get caught by Logcat because whatever it does, it turns off the whole phone.
What are you overclocked to?
I'm not, unless CM7 comes already set to overclock. I don't play games on my phone so not much point overclocking for me.

Well then. I don't know. Have you tried reflashing the ROM?
Not yet. I was hoping Mik's CM7 6.6.1 would have been declared stable by now, but I guess I'll have to settle for 6.5.8.
Quick off-topic question: ADW Launcher always comes to a grinding halt immediately after a reboot, to the point it gives the force-close option window. Is that because there are widgets installed to the partition on the sdcard, thanks to app2sd? I checked under applications and it says they're installed to the phone, but I thought I heard that app2sd (I'm using Darktremor's, as suggested by Mik) effectively takes the option out of your hands, making it moot. If that's the case, how do I delete the partition, since I'll be doing a full wipe and reinstall when I flash the ROM again.
I don't play games 2
Dammit! Yesterday I did a complete wipe (return to factory, wipe dalvik), reformatted the sd card, and updated the ROM to 6.5.8 and it just shut down on its own again. I even saw it happen... while it was sleeping, I saw the buttons light up and blink once or twice, then it shut off. The screen stayed off.
I did a clean install and haven't touched the clock settings. I reinstalled my apps of course, but I don't have anything that runs constantly in the background that I'm aware of. I installed ADW Launcher EX, I don't know if that matters.
Does this mean it could have a physical fault somewhere? I'd really hate to have to go through the hassle of reloading the LG stock ROM and unrooting it (that's possible, right) to send it in for repair.
I had the same problem with gingerbread and the related roms.
But my problems were about the overclock frequencies. I used the italian rom GingerLoL 1.5.2 and I set the frequencies in this mode: 320-729 smartass v2. No more problems.
I don't know why I hadn't this problem with Froyo's rom...
I'm tempted to fiddle with the clock settings now that I know just reflashing the rom doesn't help. It seems by default CM7 is set to 245-600mhz, with the "smartass" governor. I figure I might as well bump the low end to 320, but where's the "v2" version of smartass you mention? It's not in the list.
I have exactly the same issue! Tried 3 different firmwares, 3 different roms and different kernels too, but it seems to reboot by itself and also really slow sometimes to scroll. Can't solve this... maybe some hardware troubles? some new defected cpu ? I sent this phone 1 month ago in warranty and they changed me the logic board, then when i got it back, it started to have this trouble. Before this, never had this trouble.

I have done a full wipe, but I don't understand your other suggestion. I'm using Darktremor's Apps2SD, so I'm pretty sure I'm not running low on ACTUAL internal memory.
As per my last comment, I bumped the low end of the governor to 320mhz and there was no trouble until two days ago when it turned off on its own again, making it the longest it went without the spontaneous shutdown. However, it then broke its record for SHORTEST time because it shutdown again five hours later.
Can anyone thing of anything else, or should I start looking for my warranty info?

I'm my case the phone boots and when it load all the aplications it reboots... but one time i quickly go to setting>applications>manage applications and there has less than 1 mb... so i think it was building something like caches... I wiped everything and my phone worked as usually... but i installed a lot of things again and it keeps rebooting and rebooting... i wiped everything again and installed just few things, leaving my phone to have high internal memory... it worked!(actually i have 42 mbs of free space and it never happened again)

Phone hang when mounting USB in MIUI

Hey,
I've been using Galnet MIUI for quite some time and have had no issues except for late. Whenever the USB cable is plugged in and i choose mount USB (did it with only internal sd-card, and also with internal/external sd-cards) the phone decides to hang.
Now i'm unsure if its a full hang as holding the power button down a bit makes the phone vibrate (and i assume bring up the power menu had it not "frozen") aswell as the screen dimming after a while.
I've tried a different kernel to no avail as well as formatting both sd-cards then fixing permissions.
Has anyone else had this sort of screen-unresponsiveness?
Cheers
I've been using Galnet Miui for a while & haven't had that problem. You might wanna ask that question over @ the Galnet forums given GM is pretty much a dirty word on XDA (don't ask )

i agree
Did you change the lower cpu freq value?
Which governor do you use? Try to use ondemand or interactive for instance.
Sometimes low cpu freqs can mess up the system behavior ending up hanging.
Good luck!
hello,
once I had this problem too and solved it by reflashing the rom
(with all "cleans" like wipe cache, dalvik..)
good luck to you !
ahah MistahBungle i will not ask then i did post a thread on their forums but didnt get much of a reply so figured i'd ask here.
@asfpf i havent touched any of that, im using stock settings lols
@mijol cheers, ill give it a go. dunno if it fixed anything last time however
Mijol's suggestion to reflash the rom without a wipe might just work/is a good suggestion. One GM build I flashed I couldn't mount the external SD card over USB, a reflash/no wipe fixed the problem.

Why is my phone so slow?

Looking for advice here. I have no idea if this is hardware, software, something I'm doing wrong. I'd say the past year of having my note, it's painfully laggy. I've tried most of the more popular roms that are released. It's not always horribly slow.. but just about any time I switch to any new app, it becomes temporarily unresponsive. I've just come to terms with this thinking it is what it is.
I'm currently running the first cm 4.3 nightly, with the Uber kernel, running Jamie's settings. I've never been too into modding kernel stuff, so I don't know if I should look there first. but yeah.. any help would be appreciated. Just sick of the inconsistent speed
thanks!

Since you said this was with all roms you flashed, I'm going to guess something you're doing.
This is usually due to not properly formatting data and system areas before flashing, and also improperly restoring apps after flashing.
Install Black Star X or an ICS based ROM. If it's laggy, it's your phone. If it's not, it's because you've been trying jelly bean ROMs.

What is your flashing procedure? do you do the proper wipes... wait a bit after install before touching or changing much, rebooting like 4 times at least to let it settle in?
What clock speed / governor are you running?
undervolted?
SD boosting cache write amount, if any?

Ok.. I'll try to give my best answers.
Using TWRP, i'll go to wipe>system, then factory reset (data/cache).
Then flash the rom, then gapps if necessary.
Settle? Eh, I usually try to let it. I've also heard from the Devs there's no actual reason to do this, it's just to stop people from complaining the first 10 minutes of using the rom.
As for the other stuff... I've never really messed with it. After flashing the UBer kernel I tried to follow some settings I saw jamie recommend.. ondemand governer. That's really it.
Do I need to get more into tweaking frequency profiles, voltage, etc? different governors?
And btw.. yes, these are all JB roms. I refuse to use ICS.

Just answer this one question. Have you ever moved an app to your SD Card?

I went to apps>sd card in settings. It appears my user downloaded apps are all on my SD card. I'm guessing thats a problem. How would I change that? That's nothing I ever did, that's a default.
edit: nvm. I misinterpreted that screen. XDA app was the only one that was checked off for on sd card. They're all on my phone.

I went to apps>sd card in settings. It appears my user downloaded apps are all on my SD card. I'm guessing thats a problem. How would I change that? That's nothing I ever did, that's a default.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.
I meant moving your apps to your external SD Card when the internal storage (the 2gb /data partition) got full.
Moving as few as little as a single app to your external SD card can dramatically slow down android (for some reason). Nonetheless, a full partition elsewhere can still effect performance significantly.
Download "Storage Analyzer" from the Play Store, and see if any of your partitions are particularly full.
I try to keep 300mb or more free on all of them.
Additionally, you can wipe cache & dalvik.

And btw.. yes, these are all JB roms. I refuse to use ICS.

Then be content knowing you're trading speed and stability to satisfy your need to say you run jb

1. if you have been around at all, then you would know many wipe as many as 3 times.
2. I don't know what dev's told you there is no reason.........there is and it not to stop people from complaining. that sounds pretty selfish to me and the folk who develop here are far from that. I am not sure of he actual terminology, but the data basically needs to work its way through the system. your phone needs to read all this new system it is supposed to run.
some developers will even flash rom, then flash rom again with gapps. let it boot and settle the 10. then boot it again. set it up and then boot yet again and wiping davlik and cache every flash.
3. many developers ill also suggest you give rom a day or so with stock kernel. if you make so many changes so fast how do you know what working or whats not?
but hey if that's all to much trouble for you, to have a phone run the way you are expecting it to....... congratulations. your phone is perfect.
I apologize if this sounds harsh, it just sounds like you expect your phone to run flawlessly, but you don't want to exhaust what minimal efforts are needed to get it that way.
good luck my friend

I just went back an double checked your post count. you are definitely not a newbie here. a lot of this should be common practice for you, even if you were coming from another device.

Playing with JB roms you have to keep in mind that the radio you are on, and corresponding certs/ril/PRL .. etc, will most likely not be made for that rom and have your radio switching back n forth, left, right, n all around looking for a signal because it isnt configured right... that being said, your kernel is an integral part of the whole package and should also be flashed properly (wipe CACHE/DALVIK) at least once.. 3-4 times is proper. Go into settings, select remove method of -rm .. and repeat the wipes. Then flash kernel on top of an already settled rom ... or sometimes you flash the kernel before you even boot into the rom (my preference when possible). FIX PERMISSIONS . . always. Then sometimes do a Cache/Dalvik wipe AGaIN after the flash , especially if instructed. Same goes for flashing radios.
When flashing a ROM .. you gotta wipe everything except the external SD (Assuming you didnt move apps/data) there... remove android secure with a wipe, system wiped, boot, dalvik, cache, system, factory reset, internal SD, wipe wipe wipe wipe. If you have ever looked at the partitions after only one wipe you will know why all the fuss.
Assuming you flashed PERFECT, no dirty overlapping/conflicting stuff going on, and the rom has executed its post install scripts without being messed with, reboots done a few times to break it in.. the kernel you flash will have to be configured to the hardwares capabilities. Not all can be undervolted and or overclocked the same. . SD boost cache size is almost a must 1024 - 2048 or whatever are adequate .. might wanna do a benchmark in ROM Manager to see where your SD sees the best performance. Also, the IO scheduler type (sio, noop, cfq, vr, etc)
On demand is a good balanced governor but its only one in many variables... SD Swap.. dalvik vm heap sizes, JIT
pretty sure you know how to get into dev mode with those roms.. enable debugging .. if not, just go to phone info and hit the build a buncha times . .
memory and task management is another thing.. how many things you got loading at startup .. what is managing memory to close unwanted processes etc. .
Android Tune + ROM Manager should take care of that.. .
I've found the latest beanstalk rom with the latest uberkernel 4.3 and the Blaze modem isn't laggy but I have a new factory-refurbished phone. I have not moved any of the apps to the SDcard. But then again I don't have any games on the phone and I just came from an old Galaxy S 4g so I may not have any idea of what lag is. I noticed that some of the 4.3 roms, the Pac-Man nightlies, for instance, seemed slow enough so that I immediately flashed back to Beanstalk.
this may be another question, but I've noticed that the IO scores -- file system writes and database reads -- come out a bit slow on quadrant. On my previous phone, there was a script that sped that up, but I don't know what the equivalent would be for this phone and jelly bean.

[Q] SIII stutters & freezes randomly even after fully fresh wipe & install

Hey guys,
Currently I am using CM11 M9 snapshot, boeffla kernel, no OC/UV. But the problem occured even back on CM 10.2 Jelly Bean.
The phone randomly freezes when there is a lot going on (updates for example), also it becomes laggy after a while and needs a few minutes of quiet time. Even after a full wipe and only ROM install (no apps, no custom kernel) I sometimes ran into it freezing for a few seconds like it's working hard and then coming back. It seems to register touch commands and executes them "when it's back".
By now I have over 120 apps installed that I use from time to time. I thought having a big amount of apps does not matter since they're not running at the same time and even then the android memory management does a good job?
I am really confused, maybe I have broken hardware? Is there any way to test my hardware stability/quality? Could the CPU have degraded? Or the internal storage? What else can I do to my phone to "clean it up"? I thought a factory reset or FULL WIPE, clean install and trimming the storage is all I can do? I uninstalled the facebook app which seemed to help a little bit but I am still confused.
Would this help at all I wonder, but it's only for jelly bean.
I know there are multiple threads out on this but they all recommend "factory reset & clean install" which is what I did...
I really hope I did not make thread x-thousand on this case but I did not find anything related to "phone slow after factory reset".
Thanks in advance guys.:highfive:
Cant do anything

Propably thats M9 problem. Seems like every snapshot is getting worst and worst.
I added some information to the first post.
The problem occured even back on CM 10.2. It just started getting worse and worse over time. It was the reason I wiped and flashed CM11 M9. I do not feel a difference between the two.
But seriously, that freaking facebook app gone helps a lot.
Still, is there any way to test my hardware stability/quality? Could the CPU have degraded? Or the internal storage?
i dont really know

I dont think your hardware is degrading, try to to do a comlete wipe even the internal storage...anyway i didnt notice a big difference too. My s3 was slowed down since M8 and now M9 with this problems. Just switched to those s5 roms

Internal storage wipe -> format SD card?
Hmm, switching from CFQ from ROW scheduler really bumped up the performance.
I start to suspect that that dredded facebook app and the CFQ scheduler screwed my device. I will test some big apps/games now.
EDIT: Aaaand it's running pretty good. Mhh, I will continue monitoring.
Good
