[Q] File Transferring, microSD Format, and HDMI Questions Concerning the Galaxy S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1) So I am basically wondering if it's possible to transfer files between the Galaxy S3 and PS3. I would prefer to do this by simply plugging a cord into the S3 and PS3 like I did for my Droid X. I know the S3 doesn't have Mass Storage like my DX did, so I am not sure if it is still possible.
2) Also, I have a 64GB microSD card formatted in fat32 that I used in my DX. I would rather not have to reformat the card. Will fat32 work in the S3? I don't really anticipate having a file over 4GB. So other than that, are there any other big advantages of using exFAT over fat32?
3) I know I need a new HDMI adapter for the S3 because of the different pin connection. However, I have heard that it's not possible to use a 720p TV with the S3, even with this new adapter. My good 1080 TVs are in the basement and living room. I have a basic 720p TV in my bedroom. That's the TV I would want to use the HDMI mirroring on the most. Is that just not a possibility with this phone?
I searched quite a bit trying to find answers to these questions. I never got any solid answers.
Thanks!

Some Answers
In case anyone was wondering, I have been told the following:
1) There's not an easy, direct way to transfer files to/from the PS3.
2) It doesn't really matter what format the card is in.
3) I can't use HDMI mirroring on a 720p television.

Hey did you ever figure it out? I have been wondering the same thing. I have files on my Galaxy s3 that I would like to transfer with a cable and not through WiFi.. It was so easy to do with my HTC EVO 4G to just connect and transfer. Please let me know thanks

I essentially gave up. I just burn a disc on my computer or save the files to a flash drive and use those instead. Or, I connect my MHL cord to my TV and just watch use HDMI mirroring to watch the files.
I think that's the only way to do it. I doubt that's the answer you wanted to hear, but that's the best I can do, haha.
Incidentally, I did get my MHL cable to work on 720p TVs.

USB DVD/CD drives - CDFS and UDF Filesystems through OTG (Galaxy SII)

Hi guys,
Has anyone ever thought of connecting a slim USB powered external DVD re-writer disc drive to the Samsung Galaxy S2. I am still awaiting my Galaxy S2 to be delivered and from what I have gathered in order for this type of usb hardware to be recognized in the OTG, there would need to be support for the CDFS and UDF filesystems which many burned CD's and DVD's are recorded in. It's a 2.5" usb powered DVD re-writer (no external power needed) I attach and use sometimes on my win 7 laptop.
Would be awesome if I could view many of my old backed up DVD rips (standard 700mb XviD's) that I burned to CD through the USB OTG on my Galaxy S2 using an Android video p[layer like Rockplayer or moboplayer. Does anyone agree?
many other possibilities with burned CD and DVD media such as photo CD's, traditional music CD's (cda) and more all on Android. Optical disc drives, like other usb drives tested on Galaxy S2, may likely require separate power source.
I've even written to Samsung's UK headquarters about it and they said they will forward the request onto the relevant department. I know USB OTG function on Android is still in it's infancy.
I have breezed a look at these two favourite XDA topics relating this issue:

Any response?
i kinda doubt itll work due to the power requirements of the drive
i know that you cant connect up a 2.5" harddrive cos they suck down more power than it can output.
hell even a 256gb thumb drive ive got didnt work

Has anyone on this forum with knowledge on these disc file-systems made any investigations as to whethere it could be supported on the Galaxy SII? Maybe on a custom ROM maybe?

Power is not a problem. It works fine. All you need is a separate USB hub with its own power adapter.
You connect your USB hard drive or anything else to a hub and connect your hub to your Android device
by USB OTG cable.
You should also have a program which can read for instance NTFS file system for your Android like
USB OTG Helper or Paragon NTSF&HFS+
The problem is that there is still no similar programs for Android which could read CDFS or UDF
I think i saw that option on stweak on dorimanx kernel

[Q] HDDs that work with Galaxy Tab 10.1?

My current portable hard drive apparently uses too much power for the galaxy tab.
Are there any 500gig + hard drives that use the same power as a thumb drive or is this just wishful thinking?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
You will have to use an USB Hub with power supply. All spinning HDD's require much more power than the tablet is supplying.
I know it is not cheap, but you can today buy 128GB USB flash drives - they will work well and store also a lot of HD movies!
i am curious how you are connection your HD to the tab? if you are usign the usb host usb adapter, the little paper that came with it supports up to 32gb fat32 drives. i dont know if thats true or not, but if it is, you wont even be able to use a 128 usb flash drive as previously suggested.
i can confirm that a 32gb fat32 usb flash drive works, used with my sandisk cruiser 32
For portability the Seagate wireless drive would work.
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Satellite-Wireless-Storage-STBF500101-Black/dp/B004Z0S7K6
Using a powered hub will work just fine with portable hard drives. I have a 500GB Seagate that works very well
The USB 2.0 spec can only handle supplying 100mA x 5. So 500mA draw us the max it can supply to any drive. I don't know of any drives that are that low, might as well use a flash drive or SD card.

Hosts are actually not required to supply 500 mA even. They are required to supply 100, and may negotiate up to 500 during device enumeration.
PCs that don't support 500 are extremely rare, but mobile devices with OTG are a different story - many are limited to 100. This seems to include our device.
2.5" spinning hard drives that use less than 500 can be found. Less than 100 is not possible.
As to the 32GB limit - I have no idea why that's in the flyer, other than maybe the fact that it's VERY rare to see drives above this size formatted as FAT since Windows refuses to format drives of this size as FAT.
I have a 120GB WD external drive that works fine on my netbook (single USB port cable) I'll have to pick up a USB adapter and try it.
IIRC as the size (GB) of the drive goes up so does it's power draw.
Has anybody tried a 1.8" drive from an MP3 player?
Power consumption
Start 1.8W (max.)
Seek 0.9W (typ.)
Read/Write 0.8W (typ.)
Low power Idle 0.3W (typ.)
Stand-by 0.1W (typ.)
Though I suppose this Thread is kinda dead...I'd still like to know if there is a way to connect harddrives bigger than 32GB (and to format a Fat32 driver bigger than 32GB). Wish to stream media from my tablet to the PS3 and other players via Skifta...but I don't want to buy harddrives randomly, hoping they will work.
Tried with different USB Drives I have at home, but none works (well, NTFS of course).
Has anyone tried a bigger driver via powered USB Hub yet?
Or 64GB Sticks etc?
Cheers,
J.

Sounds awesome! So, I suppose any powered hub works. Did you format the HD in any specific way or by the help of some fancy software (just wondering as I think Fat32 cannot be formatted under Win7 if the harddisk exceeded size x) ?
Thanks

If your tab is rooted you can get "usb mass storage otg" from the market which support your ntfs formatted drives no need for fat 32 crap anymore!

So it's true, you actually have to format your 500GB drive as FAT32 to get it working?
I guess this means no HD movies (files bigger than 4 GB) right?
i plug in the lod fashioned 3.5hdd externally powered and ntfs formatted,
not able to connect 2.5hdds yet. if anyone was successful, what is powered usb hub used, i was not able to connect using a local brand of powered usb hub.

[Q] Blu-ray to Prime?

Hi guys, did a search and couldn't really find this topic on the forums. Could anyone please post the best(hopefully free) way to get my blu-rays onto the prime? I used to use cucusoft when i first got my ipod touch back in the day and that worked awesome! i don't know if they make one for the prime but something like that would be great cause it was sooo easy and the video and sound were on point. Thanks in advance for the help.
What about an external Blu-Ray drive.
With the Transformer dock you could use it's USB port to attach the external drive and boom.
Now you will just need drivers.
Anandtech did a review with a 40Mbit/s video. It was a 10 minute segment of Quantum of Solace and it was 2.8GB in size. The full 15GB version of the movie played fine as well. The biggest pain was copying it.
You could convert them to MKV. Anandtech suggested getting the DICE Player as it supports all the features of tegra 3.

Unfortunately even if we could do it, It's not only a driver issue. If it's anything like a pc it needs additional software to play Bly-rays.
I use anydvd to rip the disc to an ISO then use handbrake to encode. There is also a one click app they have for OG TF but I can't remember he name.
I thanked all of you guys for responding so quick. I was wanting something like a one-click deal like RussianMenace said to convert the file to a format that I can load onto the prime. I've only used software to do it so i don't know how to do it the "long way." And so you know, my PC has a blu-ray player drive. Can anyone explain how to convert the disc to a file on my pc that i can move to the prime or tell me of a program?

Goddamn it! I put this in the wrong forum. A thousand apologies. Could a mod please move this? I could have sworn I was in general.
Nice to see that there is coming some new accessories to android.. Now hope we also can get a nice remote that works without any mods and extra apps.
sounds good but I'd want to see it in action first
Not sure what the news is here!!
Have had an LG external DVD drive that works of one usb port for a few years now! or is this a DVD drive that works in android?

Sure you can access it, but you still need a player. Can any of the media players play .iso DVD files? Has anyone with a USB DVD drive tried plugging it in to see what would happen?

I've been meaning to search out whether or not I could use mine and have just been too lazy and busy (contradictory I know lol).
According to flub though, looks like we can't actually use them. I wonder, couldn't we just compile some linux drivers into our kernel similar to how they got external WiFi adapters to work in the dev sub-forum? Suppose I'll have to really start digging, I certainly am not about to buy another external DVD drive just to use it with Android.
I remember seeing some real cool external BD readers/writers that also featured some kind of wireless features and stuff, I would think from Samsung. Haven't seen anything on it anymore though, and I can't for the life of me find the original articles I had read.
I'm assuming that once plugged in, it will see it as an external drive. To play the .iso dvd files you can use MXPlayer.
Although this dvd player is cool, i would love to see a Bluray version.

Yep. That's what I'll be waiting for.
Just to be thorough I tried again this time connecting via a powered usb hub ( just because I was curious if it made a difference)
Still no joy, brief preparing external storage message then nothing
I guess blue ray I can understand don't want to rip all those to an external or whatever. But for the most part DVD is dead, why is this such great news. I can store 100's of DVD's on one External HDD. I also wonder if part of why certain drives won't work is power related. The TFP doesn't have much to give to the USB maybe drives with external power will fair better (and drivers of course).
>Although this dvd player is cool, i would love to see a Bluray version.
When I first saw the announcement, I had to check the date to make sure it's not a goof-up. I mean, a portable DVD writer in 2012?!
There won't be a BD version. That would take much more power, and this particular model is designed to be powered from a single USB port. Most tablets would be lucky to have one powered USB, let alone two.
I don't see much practical use for it, since optical writers have been marginalized by USB flash storage years ago. They're slower, more bulky, and chews through your battery like nobody's business. I suppose if you like to carry about your DVD/BD disc collection with you, it'd be good for that, but then you would just need a reader.
Heh, I can imagine somebody trying to rip a DVD with this. Yes, a true test for Tegra 3 processing power and of Prime's I/O prowess! Please take a picture.

I think this could be awesome for Note 2 in the car or boat (for any phone with OTG). Blueray won't work imho unless powered hub maybe ... too much power draw. But DVD is good enough and ubiquitous. Imagine a roadtrip... you stop by McDonalds, re-up on cheezbrgs, milkshakes, preload your youtube vids over their wifi, rent a redbox movie, rip it from DVD to internal memory... return redbox. 5 minute rental and no need to come back to return it - no late fees. Then just delete it when you are done. No need to recompress or anything just play native .vobs Simple, fast, ?legal?, $1.... sounds good to me.
Movies for the passengers on the drive.

Need Help finding a video

I cannot for the life of me find the video of the galaxy s3 showing all the things that can be connected to it. I cant even remember what the equipment used was called. All I can remember is there was a video and apparently there are up to 60 some odd things that can be connected to the Galaxy S3. Any help?

No, someone posted a video on here of all the devices you could connect to the S3 via some sort of dongle and I'm trying to out what that is because I wanted to get one. The video said you could connect like 65 different things to it including an xbox 360 controller.
this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46IiRyigUH0 ?
MHL is the micro usb to hdmi adaptor
USB OTG cables is the micro usb to usb cable
Huge thanks! Thats the video.
