[Q] Anyone know why widgets "freeze" in ICS? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

This is a problem that seems to occur only in ICS, but I don't know more than that. It didn't happen when I was running stock, stock/rooted, or Saurom. I'm using the Apex launcher but a quick Google search shows similar reports from people using Nova.
I'm running Flappjaxxx's ICS IMM76D UCLE2 Base (but I haven't updated to the new release that came out today). I've also noticed this on ICS Objection (with Apex launcher).
So, here's the issue: occasionally widgets will "Freeze" and stop updating. I've seen this with Beautiful Widgets (the clock will stop updating, so it will read 3:05 when it's actually 3:30), Android Pro Widgets (specifically the calendar and bookmark widgets--the calendar will not let you advance to different months, the bookmarks widget will not update to show new bookmarks if you refresh it), and the TweetCaster Pro widget (it will not update to show the latest tweets when you press the refresh button).
There is still some functionality with the widgets--they don't die completely. I can still touch the clock portion of Beautiful Widgets and get to the alarm settings. I can still touch individual days in the APW calendar widget and see appointments, and touch the header to launch the full calendar, and the APW Bookmarks widget is still scrollable, clicking individual bookmarks will launch those pages, and touching the header bar will launch the browser's default page. But for some reason they stop updating.
Things I know
1. Restarting Apex launcher appears to reset the widgets. They start fully functioning again.
That's about it.
RIght now I"m trying to determine if JuiceDefender might have something to do with it. I don't think it would because I've used JD on my other phones with no issues... HOWEVER, none of my other phones have ever run ICS. I don't know. Maybe ICS is different. I know JD had issues working with Gingerbread for a while...
Anyone have any thoughts? Questions? Experience with this? It's a bit mystifying. NOw that I know restarting Apex launcher gets everything working again it's a lot less annoying than it was (rebooting every time was a pain) but I'd still like to figure out how to make it go away.

I had same problem with beautiful widgets. my task killer was my problem.it was to aggressive

Same problem.
Have this problem both with Omega 7.0 rom and cyanogenmod.
Some widgets freezes after some minutes when phone is in standby mode.
Just by tilting the phone and let the window be landscape and then tilt it back again will activate the widget.
But it is annoying....

i had the same problem with widgets freezing; i uninstall go weather widget and go launcher and now it s fine again !!
edit: oops it came back...no freeze with Apex but it's still freezing with Tsf..
reedit: i found my problem: it was "clever contact widget "that froze the others widgets but only with TSF shell (not with Apex!!!)

i'm using a motorola atrix 2 with stock ics and this's happening to me also , it's not any app that's causing this problem , it's a bug in ics as to many .. searched gooogle .. no launcher can help , i tried nova prime and apex but same happens to both , but now i'm on stock blur again and it doesn't happen so frequently but still happens, they say that only google can help in this case , they have to give an update .. so we have to hopw that they'll give us one soon .. until then we have to restart the launcher
note- try an anlog clock on your home screen , or anlaog and digital both home screens in a one home screen , you might notice that digital clock freezes when the analog clock works fine , i don't know why but that's happening to me ..

Help with minor lag please?

Im running trigger 3.2 and its great except for one minor issue. When I enter or exit the text app I get lag. The screen stutters going in or out the app. I've tried different kernels. Adjusting the speeds in spare parts. I know its minor but its driving me nuts. Thanks in advance.
Trigger 3.2
Not sure what you mean by the screen stutters when opening Messanger, but if you have a lot of old text messages stored, I could see why it may have a bit of lag opening.
Question, if you open it... it lags and then you press home and then go back to messenger, does it open much faster (it should).
Perhaps you should so what i do and use SMS Backup+ so your text messages are backed up to your gmail in a SMS label.
This way you can delete old threads and it should load faster.
Birgertime also recommends to go into CWR and disable voodoo, reboot... then go back to CWR and enable it if you are noticing lag.
One of those 2 should take care of it.
EDIT, I am on the stock kernel with voodoo and it FLIES for me mutlitasking/opening apps.... not sure another kernel is needed, could just introduce more problems. Trigger 3.3 beta is in rom manager if you are a premium user of that app. You may want to hold off on that though since he is probably working on updates, thanks to the work of whitehawk (lock screens added).
I dont have a ton of old messages, but i do have a few. I really notice the lag when I respond to a text and hit the home button. I may try the sms backup and see if that works. Or I may go back to the stock kernel.
Are you using the stock messaging app? I was thinking of trying Go SMS. Also are you still using ADW launcher? Still liking it?

I have several hundred and have no lag going back home.. I thought you meant on loading messenger. That makes this even more odd to me. Do you have a ton of home screens/widgets? I wonder if ADW is closing due to memory so it's reloading... that may be the screen flicker you mentioned. Are your icons at the bottom of the home screen not there when you press home, and then they appear? That would mean I was correct in adw closing due to memory.
I do use the stock messenger app and I use ADW EX (though I only use 2 screens, 2 widgets and no icons (I just use the hidden dock bar for the apps I would normally have on my home screen now) I LOVE how clean ADW EX allows my desktop. ADW EX is the best launcher in my opinion. And I know there are many good alternatives, this is just the best one for me, mileage may vary.
I have heard good things about Go SMS and Handcent... the stock one does everything I need and looks good too. Don't fix what's not broken, right? Of course... perhaps yours is

[Q] GMail Widget

I am using ADW Launcher and the GMail widget causes the the homescreens to always switch to the one where the widget is when the tablet is rotated. Anyone else noticed this?
This also happened to me after i added the Email widget! Even worse, LaunherPro FC's and I'll have to repick my default launcher (wich is LP) every time i reboot and the launcher is loaded.
I've done nothing else but rooted my tab.

I had the same problem. It annoyed me so much that I went back to stock launcher.

I only had these problems straight after doing the gmail widget fix since i lost gmail widget after rooting so i tried this;
Solution: uninstall both your launcher switcher and launcher, then install latest home switcher (the gingerbread ready), and reinstall launcher.
Now, change transition effect, if you have that option, to 'none' and turn off high quality scrolling etc...
I'm now running a pretty heavy homescreen including gmail widget, emailwidget, several widgetsoids, twitter widget, facebookwidget, g+ widget and some other stuff on latest bonsaiROM, and everything runs smooth. Note: I was already on latest bonsaiROM when the problems occured

Nova Launcher problems

Anyone else here try Nova Launcher on their ICS ROM? I'm having issues with adding widgets to the homescreen. Every time I try to do so, the launcher closes.

Yep. Nova doesn't work when you try to add widgets. Not sure why, though it could be something to do with phone compatibility or the fact that Nova is currently optimized for Android 4.0.3. Until the devs are able to get 4.0.3 running, I think we're kind of SOL. It kind of sucks, but we'll be able to use it soon enough.
same. it is a bummer
Yeah even if you install it as a system app it still does the same thing FC on widgets. The stock 4.0.1 launcher is so laggy in comparision, but it's better than nothing. 4.0.2 - 4.0.3 seems to solve a lot of the transition issues that plagued 4.0.1.
Once we have aosp it'll probably work properly.
i'm running ineffibilis and i'm having no issues. trebuchet on the other hand...
On Nova beta 13, new apps' widgets don't appear in the locker unless I restart Nova. Existing widgets show fine. However, the new widgets show up fine in the widget picker, whether from launcher screen or switched from drawer mode. No FC yet for me.

[Q] All widgets disappear

This has happened twice to me. My screen is all set up the way I like it and then all of a sudden all my widgets disappear. Then a pop up comes asking me to allow widgets and I do. This is very irritating because I dont want to keep making new widgets everytime.

It's a terrible bug that we're trying to sort out. It should be sorted out soon, but for now it's best to export your theme (Themer Setting - Advanced - Export, then you can find it in the Export tab in My Themes) as this will backup your current screen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Good to know you're on top of it. It usually only happens to me after a reboot. I usually remember to export before rebooting, but it just happened to me as I woke my device.. of course this was after spending an hour or so working on a new layout :/

Don't worry this bug is on our top priority list, we'll do our best to get the bug removed as soon as possible.
Apps and Widgets Still Disappearing
Hi - I see this is an old thread but I found it through Google, and I am a little surprised to see this has been an issue for so long. I am experiencing this very issue. Sometimes app icons and widgets will disappear even without me rebooting anything - just swiping through different homescreens. I have a Galaxy Note 4. Please let me know if there's possibly anything I can do to keep this from happening - I can't count the number of times I've re-created a widget.
Also, I was wondering - does Themer affect the default homescreen (TouchWiz in this case)? I had my TouchWiz homescreen set up the way I like with apps categorized into folders, but when I switched back to it, I see that apps and widgets have disappeared or moved around on TouchWiz as well. My suspicion is somehow Themer affected it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Same problem here. I use the Samsung Music widget, resized to show a bit of the playlist and it regularly disappears from my screen. very annoying!
Will this be fixed in 2015?
Also there is a regular hick-up in painting the home screen, like it's not loaded from memory. This really reduces the overall experience with this great launcher!

Hi,
It's a very complex bug to overcome, and we've eliminated it from almost every device. Soon this bug should be fixed on all devices. For now you can always use this quick fix:
1. Uninstall Themer.
2. Delete the /sdcard/MyColorScreen/ folder (Remove the Exported folder if you have saved any themes).
3. Reinstall Themer.
If the problem still occurs we recommend selecting the Save Theme option when you long press on the homescreen, as this will temporarily save that theme. Hope this helps!
- Marco
I'm having the same problem with disappearing widgets on reboot, but only with my LG G2 D801 (not as much of a problem, but also present, on my HTC One M7). The "problem" widgets are the non-Zooper widgets such as Digical+, Poweramp, Chronus, etc.
Hope it gets sorted out, because this launcher is superb (I'll keep using it, but would prefer the problem be eliminated).
Driving me nuts!
I spend at least an hour setting up Zooper and the rest of my widgets. Then something happens forcing me to reboot my phone. Poof! All my hard work is gone. This is 6th time this has happened on my unrooted Note 4! I love this launcher and have become quite used to the theme I've set up. Nothing I've tried works, exporting, saving, nothing. Please fix this! I'm seriously thinking I'll have to find another launcher if it happens again. It's becoming to time consuming.
I have a similar issue. I accidentally drug my widget too close to the dock, which crashed nova launcher. After nova restarted, my widget won't show on the screen, but when I go directly into zooper app, it still shows the widget active in screen?!?

[Q]Is Themer suppose to be slow/sluggish?

What I mean by slow is there's always a lag in update on the widgets. For example, the current time is 1:53pm, but when i unlock my phone the clock widget doesn't update right away and it's still stuck at 1:45pm. When returning to homescreen from an app sometimes the widgets disappear and take awhile to reload. Also sometimes gestures such as swiping down won't work and I have to try it a few times.
I'm using an Xperia Z. I've had this issue with UCCW too back when I was playing around with it. It's ultimately what stopped me from using it and went back to regular android launchers because they were a lot smoother.
Is this how it's suppose to be with custom widgets? Would suck because I really like themer. I do understand themer is still in beta.

Hi,
It shouldn't be slow, try this:
1. Uninstall Themer.
2. Delete the /sdcard/MyColorScreen folder (removing the Exported folder if you saved any themes).
3. Reinstall Themer.
Let us know how it goes!
I had things like this a lot. Phone was very sluggish at times and apps constantly crashed without notice. I reinstalled Themer a few times and noticed that reboot always helps.
Since Themer is not yet optimized to the max, rebooting every day will help a lot with slow/sluggish behavior. Haven't been using Themer for a few weeks now, but all the symptoms are there when you use some heavier apps.
So don't always blame Themer. It's just your phone doing what it always does in similar situations
