[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 and stability of Android 4.0.4 ICS - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello guys, at the moment i own an apple iphone 4 jailbroken, and i had some issues with the device's hardware since 2 years ago, so im thinking of selling it and get a new phone, BUT i DONT want to go at apple again, so 4S is not an option for me.
i searched a bit and im interested into Samsung Galaxy S III
about its hardware is a top end phone atm, but im a bit feared about the Android os because ive heard some bad things from friends users of lower end android phones. so im refering at you guys who own and use SGS3 with normal and rooted os to advice me about its stability over time and usage on apps
So my final question is, SGS3 with Android 4.0.4 ICS stock or rooted, did you have any problems with it? laggs on menus/apps over time of usage or crashes or reboots etc?
Cause with iphone 4 and ios jailbroken i had it for 2 years and i never encountered a single error or crash and never had to format it to stock firmware due to problem except when i was updating versions of ios.
thank you for your time guys
i look forward your replys to talk about it and find a conclusion

Moving to Q&A

Hi,
I was in the exactly same position as you a few weeks ago.
My last phone was an iphone 4, too, and like you, I did not want to have an apple product anymore. So I went with the GS3 and I love it!
I have it rooted and installed a lot of stuff, works like a charm though!
Only problem I encountered is that I cannot install anything right now, keep having a bug with the app market... This is very uncomfortable, but I guess stuff like this happens. I might need to restore my phone to bypass this problem. But this is not limited to the GS3, it's a problem with android.
Otherwise Android is a high improvement compared to the iOS. I can now literally do anything I want. The Galaxy S3 runs smoothly, the battery usage is good in my opinion and it has a lot of power for complex programs.

Hello everyone im fairly new to the world of android .
i just have a few questions that i have not been able to
find answers too Im sorry if there are other posts asking the same please send me their way if there is. i recently upgraded from the iphone 4 to the dell streak i have upgraded to 2.2 and rooted thanks to this great site .
i love how it runs now but now im getting interested in custom roms . my main questions are what are the benefits to a custom rom over just regular 2.2 ? and would a beginner user like myself benefit enough from one to install it? from what i can tell dj Steves roms are what we have is this correct?(i hear they are great but im not sure what they do ) i also purchased a galaxy tab when i got the phone phone and have not touched it much since im always playing on the phone should i keep it is there anything it can do that my phone cant? again guys please excuse me for the newbie questions and if did something wrong posting here u gotta remember i came from the iphone lol
thanks again!
Welcome to the "Android World" from another newbie
Benefits of custom roms usually are:
Increased performance,
UI customizations,
Application customizations,
Pre-installed must have applications.
Before my streak I had an Xperia X10 (and some windows mobile phones but that's another story). I tried most of the roms on X10. There are always small bugs that you have to live with.
At the end of the day you have to decide what fits best to your needs.
PS. I'm still at 318 official but I keep an eye to Steve's roms.
Im new to android as well, I bought this about 10 days ago.
I used to have iphone 4 as well as u are. I just downgrade to this streak for having bigger 5" inch.
Now I use official froyo 2.2 . Pref mod 318. Build 12821. Set cpu. On demand overclock 1.2Ghz . Pretty satisfied with it.
thanks
Thanks everyone for the welcome . i thought it was going to be a downgrade but i love the streak way more then my iphone 4! like you sai the 5 inch screen is awesome i don't think im keeping my galaxy tab anymore lol. I need to search and find how to do that on demand overclock i think for now ill stay stock until i understand android a bit better . Does anyone know where i could learn more about development on android is there a class i could take to learn the basics?
i want to contribute to the forum so i really want to learn how to develop
thanks again everyone. lastly does anyone know if anyone else is making a 5inch phone in the near future?
thanks
I'm so glad i'm not the only person to dump the iphone4 for the streak... I kinda felt silly doing so, especially since my iphone4 was completely custom, but so far i'm glad I did. My g/f now uses the iphone4. I got the streak for 49 bucks at best buy, and really liking it. perfect size.
anyone know why i can't get adb to detect my device? (debug is on, just upgraded to 2.2 ota)
-thanks
I don't think that you upgraded I think you down graded going with the streak that's where you went wrong
Not sure if 2.2 requires different drivers or not might give that a go. Welcome to android.
sent from my re-engineered dInc
So far my streak feels like an upgrade to me I had the iphone four since it came out but it just didn't feel right to me. guess it just depends on what fits your needs. My wife now uses the iphone 4th and I don't miss it one bit. I love having widgets and a screen big enough to actually make the gps useful I don't think I could go Back to a Small screen again
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I also just came from Iphone world. Been a fan of iOS since the 3g. still a fan.
But couldn't deal with a lack of a bring screen. Been using the streak for like 2 weeks now.
I like it. I think the screen lags compared to Iphone, but maybe some of these performance modificatons will help.
I will stick with froyo 2.2 for now until I learn more. Haven't even rooted yet.

super phone

Hi everyone.
I am fairly new to android phone although we have a android haipad m7. I have been searching and reading and exploring all sorts of forums, and i can say one thing, or two, about the sgs2: very nice. Although the phone is rooted, for what i still dont know, i have never ever, and i mean never, had any issues: no bootloop, no camera out of focus issues, no pixel issues on the display, etc. Maybe this is because i dont flash (yet) all sorts of diff. kernels and roms; maybe i am just lucky to a phone that WORKS. Im now converting all my electronic gadgets to samsung: starting with my laptop...
Good to know.

Here is my journey...
About Getting an Ace
I had a Nokia 5230 there I learend about custom roms and development(@ dailymobile.com)Then I wanted a upgrade but could not afford an Ace (I'm just a kid,12)So I searched to see if the Galaxy Y or Gio(Like the name as mine is Giovanni)will be good enough the Y's screen was to small but it looked like the Gio would do the trick,THEN sudantly without any notice I got a big order from my dad's work to setup 65pc's and they were gonna pay me R4000 (About 470$) And I got my ACE YEAAAH!
Discovering XDA Forum and addiction to Rooting
So I was running stock and liking my Ace when it started laging I Googled around and found custom roms on XDA!That night I AFTER LOTS OF READING!I flashed my first rom (When ICS just got out) TheMythICS was the first ICS lookalike for Ace but me being a n00b(BACK THEN) tought it was real ics...I flashed but with stock recovery and then rebooted AAAAAAAHHHH!It stuck at samsung screen I tought it was bricked and that this was the end after a week! But that hole night I kept searching on how to fix it and got CMW and it WORKED!And so I got adicted
ROM flashing to ROM modding to ROM development journey
At that moment I flashed about 3 roms a week later it whent to 10 and now I lost count!I then started CRAP theming it SUCKED!After that I leared a lot and started dev'ing for my self...After months I saw an oppertunity for a rom and jumped at it (It's published now BlackBerry os6 v1)And now I am co-founder of a great team, Team Thunderbolt
Today
My work has unfortunalitly stoped for now cuz I bricked my Ace by restoring a CMW backup with RZ recovery. It is at the Samsung Service center at the moment
And so my journey ends FOR NOW!
Heyy people
Here my story..
My first phone was a nokia N79.
It was a perfect phone and very much miss it
I hacked that phone also to use Ngage games for free
After using it for three years then I asked my dad for a new phone he agreed and straightaway I told him S2 I got a slap on return
He gave me a budget to 15k INR
So this is where my search for a new phone began... It was very difficult to choose the OS windows/android/RIM... I was adment on blackberry at first cuz that was booming like crazy at that time but then I asked all the blackberry user and other people and all said android^ftw so went for android... Windows never occurred to me as it was a computer OS and putting it in my phone would make life boring I was the best decision ever made to go for android
After 4-5 months I got my first Android phone SGA. At first I was hugly disappointed with my phone. Touchwiz used to lag a lot unlike nokia and at first I wasn't able to install any apps from the market due to unsufficient internal memory even though internal memory was empty. I googled the problem read a lot and solved it
Then there was limitations of hardware The Android market being so vast and so many apps I was disappointed as some of the good ones weren't compatible with my phone. I installed so many apps install delete install delete so much. I also came across apps that said you need root accessat that time that word was alien to me I didn't bother much due to shortage of memory All of this happened in month and two.
Later I googled again how to customize my phone/root it etc and came across xda for 2 months I read all the stuff here and applied to my phone cm7
It was amazing... Never experienced so much customization and performance
I did not have any problem rooting/flashing etc everything was mentioned perfectly and if not the other posts would have the issue.
Then I made an account here just to post how grateful I am to all the developers and users for making my phone a real smartphone
At first I would flash every rom in the development section was addicted to flashing. My friends were amazed with my phone capabilities.
All the scripts the app2sd the gps twicks
And now I am here happy with my sexy phone and xda
Although I am not a Dev but I am learning about coding
And hope to contribute to this community

Well , here's my story .
The very first smartphone I got was the Nokia N95 .
At that time , I only knew how to pirate games for use on this phone and it wasn't used much......then I in a fit of rage I once threw it against the wall (vo-1 reference) and the phone shattered into bits and pieces . It was no longer usable .
My parents then got me the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic , and that was really the start of time when I ventured into custom ROMs . Nokia phones had to be off to be flashable , so there was once I screwed up the internal firmware , rendering it unbootable . Fortunately for me , I found a stock firmware and flashed back to that version . However , all these adventures came to an end because my dad lost that phone (I was so sad) .
So I went back to the phone shop . The phones that I asked for: The 3 flagship WP7 phones......were all out of stock . Then I asked for the SII , out of stock .
I was presented with 2 Ace devices: the HTC Desire HD (HTC Ace) and the Samsung Galaxy Ace . I stupidly took the Galaxy Ace as it was free under my contract .
That's when I discovered Android phones could be rooted.....and so my quest at XDA began . I registered for an account straight away , looked at the available guides and I even made a newbie guide myself (I am proud of it)
I try to help people in the newbie thread and trolling along with friend in the off-topic thread
Till now , I have 3 Android phones (Motorola Defy [spoilt] , Motorola Backflip and Samsung Galaxy Ace) and a year of experience in XDA I also recently became a Recognized Contributor
Whatever the future holds I do not know.....but I will face whatever happens with a smile
This was sent from a Galaxy Ace. Problem?
I dont like to write long stories... But in short Once an Ace user always an ace user...

I WAS once a proud NOKIA user!
My last Nokia was E5...
I love the QWERTY keypad and hater of touchscreen phones. But one day I've read about ACE review in a newspaper. The review was so nice n I was influenced.
So,bought it. After about 3days, Im thinking, are they upgradeable like Nokia? So,I've Google and accidentally found xda, create an account but never write a single post that time
I follow the rooting,n flashing cm7.1 RC1 I didnt even know what ANDROID is. Luckily I didnt brick it. Consider myself lucky. Then when 7.2 was created, I used infinity rom by nims. After few months, I start to learn what is kernel(i have Googled it and the answer was popcorn lol), script, rom and ext, what is ODIN
Now,even I didnt make any modifications, but I'm still learning
the Mafia in 'making'
My first phone was Sony Ericsson K770i. It was a great phone. The camera used to be my favourite feature of it. In the year 2010, after finishing my PMR, I got a part time job as the P1 broadband promoter. After working for 1 month, I got the salary which was RM1000. Then I decided to buy a smartphone. I did many researches about what was a smartphone and Android. Then I found that Samsung Galaxy S was really awesome and popular. Unfortunately, it was very expensive and I decided to wait until it became cheaper. In the March of 2011, I read an article about Samsung new mid range smartphone-the Samsung Galaxy Ace. I was impressed, the design was absolutely amazing and specs was not bad. The day after that, I went to Samsung Centre in Sunway Pyramid and finally bought it with a price of RM999.
The performance of Galaxy Ace was very good until someday in April, it started to have problems. It rebooted itself. I was worried about that. Wondering was it infected by viruses? Then I looked for solutions from the internet and found the XDA forum. Did a cache wiping and everything became normal again. After that, I realised that I could actually customize it further. Then I started to learn about rooting. The first custom ROM that I installed was Ice Cream Sunday by Jusada. It was really good. Boosted the performance of my Ace.
In the September, I registered a XDA account. Decided to learn what was a custom ROM. Nims11 and Robin taught me a lot. Jusada also taught me how to create a custom ROM. Until today, I'm a Recognized Contributor of the XDA forum.
Respecting others never hurt, let's build a better XDA community.
well my Ace is my first phone
i first saw android os on my friends htc legend and was insanely amazed
the live wallpapers, the ui , the settings(lol they looked nice too ) and i decided at once that i will buy an android at any cost
after seeing my phones Htc Desire i got even more desperate
so i worked part time for 3 months and raised up the money ( i was in 11 grade then ) so i had 3 choices available back then due to my 15k budget:
se xperia x10 mini(and mini pro ) , samsung galaxy 3 , and htc wildfire
i just loved the looks of sense ui , and was about to buy wildfire when bang ! came our Ace faster processor , better display and everything more than wildfire so i bought it right away after some 15 days after its release
well i never liked touchwiz( and i still dont ) so i did some googling and foound whhat root power is capable of ...so i decided to root my phone
after watching the root tutorial about 3 times i finally rooted my phone .and then went on to the android market to install all root apps possible . well then i encountered the extremely dangerous ROM MANAGER and i bricked my phone luckily for me the service guys replaced the board
and from that day i flash anything fearlessly coz the worst possible had already happened to me.....well i found xda when i was searching for the elusive CM7 rom for my Ace ( read a great review of cm7 at androidpolice) and then i followed it for about 6 months without registering .....why ??? bcoz i thought that this was a developer site i thought that devs will not like noobies like me ...well i finally decided to join in december ( bought my phone in march)
and since then its been a great journey today i have my favorite cm7 rom on phone ( never flashed a non-CM custom rom..not even roms based on CM ) ........and a great android community of which i m proud to be a part of
sorry for writing so much i just got a bit emotional
Before i got Ace i had a NOKIA 5800XM
Nice phone, better display than ace, but it was a resistive screen. and Vf-firmwares always needed years-.-
Well after 2 years i got a new phone by contract. of course i wanted S2 or newest Nexus...lokked at the price and said: no sir! Its a faqing phone!
Then had the choice between Xperia Ray (ugly, little screen and 80€) or ace (pretty nice, at least bigger sceen tha 5800XM and 50€.
Thats how i got my ace about 8 months ago with Stock 2.3.3 running and no update in sight (Vf...´nuff said)
Rooted it, cuz i can. And a few days ago i created an XDA acc and flashed CM7.2 because it got official and development is in progress.
great I'll start with mine. I was an avid Nokia user since its a popular brand here in the Philippines, started with 5110, 3315, 5300, N70, 5800 (i think), and C3. got bored and got my Backpay on one of my jobs. so i saw the ace and loved the screen, i bought on a mall just to find out that I can buy it online for less PHP2500 that what i paid for so i feel bad i thought it was a rip off. so I started using it and wasnt really happy with the battery life, thats were i started googling since i heard about custom ROMS, now i am very happy i bought an ACE, i plan on buying a new phone soon but will always use it as a back up . i have also rooted 2-3 aces of my friends and introduced them to XDA and rooting.
welll i always got used phone from my family..... 4-5 in span of 4 years from class 9....
then at the end of first year of my college i had 20,000 savings ... i asked my brother for helping me out for a phone for i basically needed for internet and pics..and i was in love from the name android and its huge functionality
My bro suggested me SAMSUNG"s ANDROID
galaxy ace was launched near may 2011.... as galaxy S didn't had the flash and my family asked me not to go for costly S2 (i still sometimes feel dejected why i never listened to my innerself and purchased s2) i ordered ACE...
as i GOT my ace i was extremely happy....i took photo from it... at night day and was in love with it...
but as i came in love with android apps.. i found the problem of "low internal phone memory"...
i moved to net and found flashing.... used androidflip and it was sad that the site didn't clearly stated the right process to boot in recovery.. so gave in service centre after wrong flashing...
next i came to xda.... and OMG!!! such helping people... i came to know of root... rooted my MOBILE.. partitioned sd-card and whole bundle of appps... at one time i had my 2GB sd-ext partition almost full on cm7
with time i grew to know how to flash and use phone with some mods..
i came to know about pro and cons of CM& and stock
and i always keep flashing my MOBILE and doing some MODS from UOT
my family started to denote and have fun with me by stating that my ACE is the 2nd SUPER COMPUTER that INDIA has got
now i am a STOCK custom rom lover ACE USER....
i keep a minimum app..not like my 2gb sd-ext ....
i am not much of pretty much satisfied with the total response from my ace... but yes its was a nice package for 15,000 last year....
Hii,
It was nice to hear stories from all of you...would like to know more n more interesting and geeky things that have happened to you guys n gals on the journey...
Keep writing.
If possible also share some information links which can guide others on their journey as well.

nice blog ...http://androidict.blogspot.in/
I can see that most of us a from Nokia "smartphone". In 2009, i was not conviced with android. So i buy a windows mobile instead. A non touchscreen phone, with slide keyboard and stuff. Then after a year, androids become more mature and i got extra cash. So i bought Galaxy Ace. a value for money phone At that time. Comparing winmo standard and android, android is better in many levels. But winmo handles memory better imho.
I dont like stock rom, and using CM since the first unoficcial build. And now lewa rom. Tried CM9. It was fast and usable but my GF wants to use the camera. She even want me to flash back to GB that instance. Haha
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA
my timeline on android
my first android phone was GALAXY 5 cheap phone but they have great developers @madteam.co and i already learn on galaxy 5 how to root how to recovery how to flash a rom how to edit some themes and also how to create a Rom .
My Mom buy a Galaxy Ace for my xmas gift so my g5 are goes to my litle sister
so i look at google and xda my first custom rom to my ace was Ice Cream Sunday by Jusada and now so many ROM that i already flash.

My Journey:
First when I was about in Grade 5 I got a WM smartphone: HTC Touch. I used it happily until my mom bought herself an HTC Tattoo(LOL, it was awesome that time). After that she went to iPhone 4 and I got the Tattoo. And that's when I'm addicted to XDA. Later on, as a unimportant 12-years-old kid, I got Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 FOR FREE. First I argued with my dad about who will use the iPad 2 at home and the new stuff. I then OWN the Tab 8.9.
I used it for educational purposes. Then one day I went to lunch with my family, including my grandparents. To my amazement, my grandad got an ACE and he gave it to ME!
OK, so I am still on stock rom for a month, then you know that!(I changed rom 6 times a day maximum )
Unluckily, one day I started deving rom for ACE and pulled a Sense 3.5 rom from HTC hero and HARD-BRICKED MY ACE!!!! My dad took it to the service and the "geeks" over there changed the board for FREEEEEEEEEEE From that day on I dare not port a ROM to my ACE.
Discovering XDA:
When I was using my HTC Touch one day I heard a strange word: "up ROM" which means flash ROM for pros. My dad upgraded the ROM for me and I came to XDA. After coming to the ACE forum 2 years (already rooted) later I found a F****** lots of ROMS here and acted like a maniac.
ROM Flashing:
At first I acted dumb: use ROM Manager on my ace(pls notify koush about that). Luckily nothing happened. As I got an experience on flashing before it was a breeze.
Developing:
Simple: Put apps into a ROM, zip it and sign it.
Next: Porting and HARD-BRICKING
Next again: Stucking at modding framework-res.apk(If someone knows how pls pm me, I found it on Google but want to know exactly how to do it on ACE.)
Changing mobile;
Before coming to ACE and when using HTC Click, my dad's Desire became broken. He allowed me to fix it, so now I'm on a Sense 3.5 ROM on my Desire in my pant's pocket right now.
And that's the end!

[Q] questions & complains

Hi all,
I'll eventually buy a S3, that's why I am posting here, but before I do that I want to leave here my questions / complains.
I own a SAMSUNG GT-I9000 running a CyanogenMod 10 nightly build 10-20120918.
I've been using this phone for 2 years and I've tried several ROMS.
My experience with this phone and with this OS is rather disappointing since most of the time the phone is in alpha or beta.
I mean all the ROMS I've tried had bugs (TouchWiz maybe is stable but I do not like it).
For example, I power on my phone and the OS crashes, after some minutes when I manage to get to the home screen I get "Google Search isn't responding. Do you want to close it?". Not to mention that some apps need at least 10 sec to launch.
I really appreciate the effort of the developers but I just don't get it that are appearing ROMS with such severe bugs.
So I've decided to buy a new phone but once again I am between the devil and the deep blue sea.
I've spent some time in shops testing Galaxy S3, HTC One X and IPhone 5 and wondered:
1. How can it be that Galaxy S3 with quad processor on board is performing so bad compared to dual core of IPhone 5? All apps on IPhone are opening almost instantly, not the case on S3. I can clearly see that S3 is not as responsive as IPhone 5 and if you have done the same as I did you cannot deny it.
2. How HTC manages to build such a beautiful OS and Samsung not? TouchWiz looks like is made for kids just like the custom ROMS for it. I know Sense is not perfect but at least is an eye catcher. There is not even one theme for S3 that appeals to me. Or is there someone here who likes to see pink unicorn as logo? If I were 10 years old maybe I would like to have icons with popey, smurfs, heidi and barbie on my phone, but I am not. So the most among you I think...
Maybe can someone can answer these questions...
As I said I ll probably go for the S3 for several reasons but these things really bother me. I'm afraid it 'll be the same story again...Having a super smartphone and not even able to make a phone call...
Are you some sort of idiot....if you have so much to complain about dont buy the damn phone! Dont come on here whining about it! Not really the best place to be comparing the processing power to an iphone is it??

Here's a bit of advice:
DON'T SPAM THE BOARD,
if you just want to complain about every freakin' ROM, don't do it at all..
test things before posting cr*p like this,
GET STABLE ROMS!!!
WIPE DALVIK BEFORE RUNNING OSs
BUY THIS GOD FOR SAKEN PHONE, GET MIUI AND BE HAPPY!!!
AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE MIUI, GET CM9 IT'S THE MOST STABLE TO DATE.
By the way: Thanks, you just ruined my evening. Cheers, mate! Have a good day

I didn't insult anyone and I will not reply on this level. If there are others like speedygay you can leave your comments for yourself don't post at all. If no one is complaining then nothing is going to change.

The beauty of android lies in the flexibility and customization.
S3 is way better than any Apple
If you like Apple, go and buy it, what are you comparing for?
There are many stable roms for all phones, I use viking, with nova launcher, I am happy.
Everyone has different set of needs and preferences, don't waste your own or others time by convincing others or asking us to convince you.
Be yourself.

Oh, look. You just insulted someone!
Report no. 5 in one day. One more and I'll break my own record.
Oh, and you did just reply..
Please, go spam Rootzwiki, or some other forum, but not this masterpiece..
You are answering with fanaticism just like the Iphone funs. I didn't post to argue with you. If you want you can keep your eyes closed and simply get what they give to you. I like android more as the other OS and I like Samsung phones more as the other phones. I think all the people behind the scenes, in the community or even at Samsung, can do better.
If there are no themes you like, and no roms you like... Instead of "complaining" Why don't you take the time to learn how to theme and customize a rom then you can customize it the way you want? Devs do this for free, you honestly have NO right to complain. Do you pay them? Are they your employees? No.. So you have no right to complain.
If you do not like what the community has to offer you can
1. Leave the community
2. Learn how to do things yourself and stop depending on other people to do things for you especially if you do not like anything that's offered...

When will Ubuntu touch really available for I9100G?

As we all know, Ubuntu touch is really a amazing HMI and I really wanna try it on my phone!
But it is still under developing and cannot even make a call or send a SMS, terrible! So I have to keeping using CM10.1, i.e. Android 4.2.2.
Really looking forward!!!
it will take a lot of time it hardly ever gets updated and it's not a primary OS and our device is getting old a lot of people have shifted from the galaxy s2 these days so your best option would be to be patient
