[Q] A question for those who have unlocked their Prime. - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

My Prime has been less than what I expect of it, the browser is really awful at times. It's useable, but that's it. It crashes far too often (both on .21 and .28) even after doing a factory reset (on both versions). Also random reboots if something unexpected happens.
I don't need to RMA my Prime for these issues because as far as I'm aware, this is normal behavior and is a software issue.
However, I can't even RMA if I wanted to. A while ago my sister pushed my tablet off my dresser, causing it to hit the corner and make a nice dent on it. So I'm going to assume that ASUS will mark my tablet as CID when I send it in. (Sister has mental health problems, for those who would ask.) If anyone is even reading this far into this, would ASUS still RMA my tablet? Or am I just screwed?
Question for the unlockers who didn't want to read all of that.
Does unlocking the Prime and installing a different ROM and using the custom build.prop and other tweaks solve all the problems that the Prime has with the browser and overall usability? Does this make it smoother and faster?

I don't know is it solves" all" the problems, but if you choose the right ROM it is very smooth and solve the browser crash problem.

By "all" problems, I absolutely mean software related. I'm mainly concerned for the browser crashing/lagging/stuttering, since it's the most used app on my Prime. The UI in general is smooth, but sometimes it hangs from the Play Store and other background processes.

i think unlocking can help, but it's a risk and a very hard decision.. if you happen to unlock, i can recommend this ROM, smooth as silk...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827

if you're rooted, search up Browser2Ram for the TF201.
It works only for stock browser, but I can guarantee that it almost 100% gives you what browsing should feel like with almost no stuttering or any force close.

99% of the problems you stated will disappear if you load the right ROM. As skarfreak stated in post 4, go with Androwook. I have tried ALL other ROMs, and is is the best all around. I actually went back to using the stock browser now. Since you cannot RMA, you might as well take it into your own hands to make your device better.

Alright, thanks! Seems like the best choice to go with. It really sucks that a $650 device isn't as premium as the price tells me it should be, but neither was my phone until I installed a custom ROM.
It pains me to say this, but Android device manufacturers need to step up the quality.

Wow this feels great!

Are you tired of the constant updates lately? I didn't know if it would fix my prime or break it further I was just hoping for the best with 13,14, and 15. I was also hoping someone could hack the unlock key so I could still have my warranty. Well yesterday I got irritated and decided to unlock. The entire time I had second thoughts because I am unsure if this tablet will last a year without breaking lol, so I clicked through as fast as I could (after reading all the unlock ops.) Well as soon as I was unlocked I felt a whole lot better about my prime. Maybe I have just lost faith in Asus, I don't know but as soon as I loaded virtuous I felt more secure about my purchase. I guess I have finally come to the conclusion that Asus ISNT going to have a miracle fix for the prime that fixes all the problems and after asking someone through PM twice for a refund since I was dissatisfied with the product (only to get no response what so ever..) I decided I would make the best of what I have and stop worrying.
I don't know how to explain it but now that my device is unlocked all of my uncertainties are gone. I will keep this device for the next year or so and crack flash like there's no tomorrow!
If you are undecided on unlocking I say go for it. (Assuming you read the tutorials!!) I did and I am much happier.

what isseues did you have in each firmware ?
and what`s your sn ?
Reboots, bad wifi range, zero GPS, screen flickering, lag in the UI, bad battery life. Some of these issues would come and go depending on the update.
C10 serial.

I have a C10 also, but with none of the issues you have mentioned other than the gps being totally useless. I'm not that bothered as i don't really need it but it does take the shine off an otherwise excellent product.
Could you let me know if installing a custom rom has made any improvement to your gps performance.
Cheers
Interesting, i was to on the fence about unlocking. I returned my Prime the other day. I've never had wifi probs on any of mine. Just got fed up with random reboot and YouTube glitches and browser freezing. One had dead pixels and light bleed.
Might have to pick up another today. Why not make it 5 lol.

let me know how you like the virtuous rom. how is the battery life compared to stock? how is the overall speed of device now in your opinion? have you come across any shortcomings on the rom yet? I'm on the fence also but still holding on. I will at least wait till I see more roms. plus I'm really looking for a rom to bring 1.8-2.0Ghz+ speeds. then I might jump the gun if its stable and performs very well.
I think I know the feeling you talking about. its a feeling like you have more control now over the fate of your device now that you can flash new roms at will. did you use rom manager to install official updated CMW or did you use the unofficial method? or the all in one method with viperprimetime 4.5?
glad to hear you feeling more confident about device now that you have the power..lol

This. Yes more control over its fate lol. I tried to use rom manager but it wouldn't work for me. I did use vipers mod to unlock and install cmw. Virtuous is great, very stock feeling and buttery smooth. Ill let you know about the battery after a week or so of testing. I do like the 1.6 ghz overclock being the new performance mode. No screen flicker anymore either! It does seem very stable in the few hours I've tested it. Will update when I can.
Edit: GPS is just as dead as before zero birds.

I won't get the fuzzy feeling until I can unbrick with nvflash, like with my phone (only not nvflash lol)
But I absolutely understand! 20 minutes after I picked up my phone from the Post Office, it was running custom ROMs (without voiding warranty... bah!). 10 minutes after I picked up my Prime it was rooted
Until then I'm still kind of sitting on a sharp edge with the Prime.

I'm in the exact boat you are, C1 and no issues besides GPS. Just solved that today with GPS over bluetooth pairing with my Nexus. Ive got no need to unlock with Voodoo rootkeeper, haven't had any issue with Asus' OTA's (.13 had the battery issue but it disappeared for me in .14) and if they want to provide me with frequent updates- I'll take em. To each his own I guess.

Definitely, I'm glad your having great luck with your prime! As far as battery life on vitreous rom, it seems VERY solid. Still no concrete numbers but its been on for about 12 hours with about 5 hours of usage and I have 68% battery. I've ran several benchmarks during this time as well. Seems quite a bit better!
Edit: by the way, I am in no way hating on the prime. I was so excited when I got it (one of bestbuys first batches!!!) But I've just had more problems than is normally acceptable even from a new product. I love my prime so much I'm just disappointed with a few critical features and was hoping Asus could somehow fix these issues. I am a HUGE techie and even though I can get about 27-32 mbs from my prime upstairs, all my other devices get a solid 42 mbs which makes me sad face! Lmao.

I had the same feeling as the OP, except it was the first day the unlock tool came out.
I had wholly intended on unlocking it right away.
I also love experimenting, learning and tinkering with this, so I've flashed and reflashed about 100 things on my prime so far, and I could not ask for anything more

Should I root yet? I REALLY A need advice?!?

I'm wondering if I should root my Prime yet? I see the Virtuous Rom & I love and trust they're work as it is all I've ever used on my sensation. But, is it much of an improvement yet? I have no GPS at all, and I do get the screen flickering here and there, but I don't want to send it back for fear that it could be worse! Wifi is OK, a little weak I guess but acceptable, and I see the browser has stopped working msg, even though it hasn't, but I font know if virtuous could fix any of these or the occasional force closes. It sounds like a lot of issues I get but they really are mild & not that often, but if virtuous can fix it then I'd go for it.
Also, sift root method is best? I saw one that is just an apk that I can install, I think it was recently posted.
I'm just wondering what can be fixed thus far and what major advantages I would have at this point by rooting and flashing virtuous? Thanks in advance, all opinions are appreciated!

You would need to unlock your bootloader to use Virtuous ROM, not just root your Prime. Those are two separate things.
I highly suggest reading more threads in General and Development before proceeding so you can make the most informed decision.
Since you don't seem to know the difference between unlocking a bootloader and rooting.. my suggestion would be to try neither until you have a stronger grasp of what is involved and what each process actually does.
I would doubly recommend you don't unlock your bootloader since that will void your warranty and could really leave you screwed if you somehow manage to brick your Prime.
As a side note, no custom ROM is likely to provide a significant improvement on GPS. The problem with GPS really isn't a software issue, so no software will ever be able to make it really work.
As for the screen flickering.. how often does this happen and how often to you restart your Prime? It happens to me once in a while, usually after my Prime has been on for a couple of days. Restarting makes it go away for another couple of days. Installing a custom ROM might fix the flickering, but there is a good chance that a hard reset will also fix the flickering. In any case you will have to decide for yourself if turning to custom ROMs to fix the screen flickering issue is worth losing your warranty over.
I'm well aware of unlocking the boot loader, as that goes without saying. I somewhat generalized the process with my statement. I'm also aware GPS is a hardware issue. I'm wondering if Virtuous will fix any of the common minor software issues. If I'm running Virtuous on my Sensation, do you not realize I've unlocked at least one boot loader in the past? Not to mention on my many other devices.
Okay, now can anyone who can share more than the absolute most obvious information, let me know if it is worth spending the time doing, or has not a great deal of progress been made at this point?
If I seem a little short, its because so many seem to assume everyone lacks common knowledge and it can be a bit frustrating. I am a business owner, and this is my hobby, but I have very little time to spend with it as of late. If not any significant process has been made, I assume it best to hold off.
I am more than able to comprehend and follow directions, and when I asked which method, I was more or less referring to which guide was the most commonly used, or the shortest process. Thank you again.

The current Virtuous Rom, or any of the other roms out, do not claim to fix 'any minor software issue'
Virtuous will certainly make your prime seem faster though.
Over half of my enjoyment with the Prime is the fact that I am customizing it and installing custom roms and tweaking. If you don't get any enjoyment out of that, and you need to ask here to make this decision, then perhaps it is not for you.

I was wondering if you've already done a factory reset after you upgraded to ICS. I've read some good news when doing this. Gonna go this route when I'm finally ready for ICS.

I agree. research more first. once you unlock bootloader there is no turning back. warranty voided and no OTA updates. make sure you ready to accept those facts if you decide to unlock.

I've rooted every device I've ever owned, except this is my first tablet. I do have it insured though, and it covers lost or stolen, so worst case scenario I would claim it and pay the $99 deductible. I haven't bricked a device to date, knock on wood. I just don't usually bother with it until there is significant progress made. Honestly, I usually root for advantages in this order.
1) AOSP or something very pure: But, Asus UI is already very vanilla and clean.
2)Tethering Break: T-Mobile would like to charge me for tethering individually for all four of my lines, but obviously I can't tether anything off of the prime, but rather tether to it.
3)Performance/Battery Tweaks: The prime is already amazingly fast, but faster can always be achieved.
So, in conclusion the only benefit I would gain from rooting/unlocking would be performance tweaks. I gather that no rom has provided any major increases increases in performance thus far, or resolved any of the minor persisting bugs. So I believe my question has been answered.
I would LOVE to see CM9 on the Prime! When its released I'll be willing to take the day off of work to play with that!

People assume you lack common knowledge because of the way your phrased your question, which seemed to confuse to very different procedures that a lot of people confuse when they don't quite know what they are doing
As for rooting, there are plenty of methods in the Dev forum, and there are plenty of threads in there discussing which one is best and why.
As for unlocking the bootloader, there are no really great reasons for doing so right now.
None of the custom ROMs really offer anything great at this point over the basically stock version of ICS already on the Prime. I am sure in a few months there will be lots of great enhancements added into custom ROMs, but now it is mostly stuff you can add for yourself with the right apps.
But hey, if you have insurance on your tablet and want to mess around go for it, its your device!
I don't personally have a reason to want one of the custom ROMs yer even though they look great. I am holding off unlocking as a friend of mine may need me as a test for some toying with the unlocker but I will be doing so eventually. I am not really worried about the warranty personally as I am intelligent enough to pay attention to what I am doing and not brick. If I have any hardware issues I have squaretrade. I did root it though as soon as it was available and remain rooted now.

I used Sparky APK, worked nicely the post is in Android Dev section here
This ISN'T my Transformer Prime
Rooting...why?
Well one reason would be to see if you can gps going.... I rooted via Vipermod primetime. Then I went here to pick up some files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533776&highlight=gps+tweak I extracted them and added the 2 in the system /etc folder to my system etc folder under gps (because they weren't there doh!!) and I can say I seen a marked improvement.... from no sats locked to up to 8... and that is INSIDE by a north window...... so you tell me.... why wouldn't I root just for that alone......btw... the root is reversible I didn't unlock the bootloader....
The other thing I did was make a backup with Titanium.... never know when a guy wants to rip out some stuff..... next will be checking out ez overclock ... tomorrow maybe

TFP's Reliability - Do You Trust Your Device?

Hello all!
Kind of a mild question, and potentially not needed, but I thought I'd post anyway...
Last night I had a force close during a short short paper that I was writing and lost it. While this wasn't a significant loss, it made me question the reliability of the TFP. Though this might be a cause of Office Suite itself, I am just concerned because I often get force closes from several operations doing the simplest of things. I have run fix permission both in cwm and rom manager (even though they probably do the same thing).
Do you trust your prime with your work? Have you experienced any nightmareish force closes?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
Force close is a software issue on app side. Probably not optimized for ICS yet since its so new and so few devices have it yet. I trust the prime with my work. No real horror FC stories yet. It might be good to do periodic save points on papers n such for situations just like you described. But app FC is not caused by prime hardware.
I trust my Prime in the sense that I trust code compiled will be O.K. and not a bitswapped mess.
I don't trust my Prime in the sense that the WiFi signal sucks versus the TF101, and in this building, we are lucky to be able to use anything without an Ethernet jack :-o.
Most of the stuff I use for "Work" runs below Android, like Vi IMproved, OpenSSH, and tmux. But I have rarely had issues with apps crashing, save Google Music and the stock browser!
Considering mine just irreversibly bricked itself while sitting on a desk doing absolutely nothing, no, I don't trust it at all.
Yes. I did a factory reset after the ICS and firmware updates and everything now has been rock solid.

my launcher keeps hard freezing. on. 21 rooted

My launcher keeps freezing up. Have to force stop it from the apps menu. Any help?

Not that I know of, have you also tried clearing its cache? Maybe even go so far as to clear the cache and data? If neither of those helps, then something's been tweaked or corrupted in your system; at which point a factory reset/manual update would do the trick I imagine. Be sure to back up all your apps and important information off the internal SD card if it comes to that though.
*EDIT:
Just noticed in your signature that you're unlocked and on a custom ROM. Have you tried a third-party launcher? Could it be an issue with the ROM itself?
Was kinda afraid of that. Its a stock blob in CWM wrapper. So it "shouldn't" be corruption but.... we all know how that goes. I've wiped cache etc and even reinstalled the launcher with root. Same issue develops after a few hours.
Tnx for your help. Which other custom rom would you recommend? I wanna stay mostly stock.

Haha, no clue, I haven't watched the dev thread as well as I should I haven't unlocked just yet due to the drop of warranty and lack of proper nvflash. I would do the same honestly, try and keep stock. Maybe just try an earlier version. I'll have a look at the dev section and see if anything pops out. Have you checked the md5 sums and everything, or just tried redownloading?

I've redownloaded 3 times. Everything else works nicely. I did test the motley kernel, however I've since reverted to stock kernel. And I've wiped and reinstalled after that when the launcher kept crashing. I might give virtuous a try if this continues.
Aye, seems to me as though the ROM just isn't handling the launcher well or has some kind of mem leak or something. Try out Virtuous Prime or Primalicious, they both seem pretty true to stock but Primalicious has less minimalist icons. And it is the stock launcher right?

actually. now both launchers i use crash in the same way.
all items disappear. however i can still swipe, and if i randomly tap things open that should be visible.
i use stock asus launcher. as well as GO launcher HD
it just seems that after awhile of either using or sitting the tablet, the launcher just fails. and it takes me frantically tapping it to bring up the "not responding" text.
otherwise i just go into settings/apps and kill it.
thanks for your help. im going to try out a couple different ROMs to see if it can solve this issue.
seems every device i have ends up with very weird unexplainable issues. and ive changed up everything from device to device (you know, scientific method and whatnot) and can not seem to isolate what causes these problems.

seems every device i have ends up with very weird unexplainable issues. and ive changed up everything from device to device (you know, scientific method and whatnot) and can not seem to isolate what causes these problems.

Welcome to electronics and programming Lol, really the most important thing is to start off strong and have a solid base to build from. We haven't though, we're still having to shuffle official updates to try and reach that point. Although I have faith in our dev's and they've worked toward fixing a lot of the issues already, it will only get better once true stock gets stable and the dev's get proper nvflash access. Until then I'm afraid things will be pretty sporadic. That's what we get for falling for all the hype on a brand new device.
*EDIT:
Also, have you set your I/O scheduler to something other than noop? Check out ATP Tweak in the dev sub-forum and see if that doesn't help.

yes, i am sadly very used to unstable builds on my devices. but, its always better than what the original manufacturers release.
and thats just the price to be paid for staying on the bleeding edge of this tech.
i am fairly experienced with the basics of flashing ROM's and beta testing, but i am faaaar from being a programmer/developer so i am not quite sure how to change the I/O scheduler anything past using pre-done scripts like the V8 Supercharger.
ill check out that tweak, thank you again for your help.

Jellybean Vs ICS

I've been waiting to see how this Jelly Bean update is working out for people. I'm unlocked and rooted very close to jumping in.My biggest gripes has been the browser ANR's and sub par Wifi. However I'm good with my Prime for the most part...Which is why I've been reluctant to flash new any of the latest Jelly Bean Roms. I'm aware I can NFlash and revert back ((I think) but prefer to get the feedback anyways.
I know there's a few forums about what people think since the update but this thread is basically to see who updated to Jelly Bean and wished they stayed on ICS because they have new issues, or just hasn't noticed much of a difference. Moderators feel free to fix anything I may have missed since its a poll.
Thanks
I had many many browser ANRs on ICS and after moving to CM10 they are all gone . As you are unlocked I think you should try it by yourself if it fits you (do nvflash before just in case). Wifi seems to me unchanged (ie not better).

My Prime never had that much problems to begin with, but sometimes I had some ANR and my Wifi didnt download stuff fast and sometimes disconnected, but rarely. Since JB I never got ANR and in the beginning I was getting some reboot, I still have an issue with my ADW Launcher it was working correctly before update, but now sometimes icons are weirdly displayed, but I blame them cause now its listed as incompatible and before it was listed compatible with the Prime. Yesterday I installed Bards Tale and downloaded the 3.5 Gig version and the download of tha additional data was very fast.
SO overall my tablet is better with JB
I'm not fully satisfied with the actual upgrade process as it bricked my Prime. But I am satisfied with Asus RMA service who fixed it very quickly (at no charge).
JB itself seems slightly snappier, but not significantly so. Also what I'm seeing may be more the factory reset and less the actual Project Butter. And it feels like they slightly shortened some animation times (something I already did on some phones before, by using Settings -> Development options), which of course makes it feel slightly faster. Google Now is a bit lackluster so far, but it's not something I intended to use anyway. Voice-based keyboard is a nice touch, and great that it works offline, but more gimmicky than useful to me.
There's nothing really wrong with it so far though. In that regard, I'm satisfied with the update and don't need ICS back. However, judging from the lack of real improvements, I think I'm not going to update my S3 to JB any day soon - I'm not missing out on anything really, and don't want to risk any compatibility issues.

My Prime on JB is way faster. But, JB on my S3 is amazing. So smooth. I'm running AOKP and i dont regret it.
I appreciate this. Especially since I had forgot where I had read somewhere else about some of the apps aren't compatible..Yet. Overall per the poll though I, MOST ppl are happy with the update. I'm considering figuring out how to flash this NVflash to be able to give this a shot and revert back if I'm not happy. I actually flashed CM10 art 1 point but didnt like the fact it didnt stream audio via HDMI.
I also just read the WIFI Tether is not working with Transformer Prime? Is this true for anyone else..That would be a deal breaker for me. I like having WIFI wherever I bring the tablet.
Keep the feedback coming!

Wifi tether does work with jellybean I use it when I'm out to play the shadow gun beta you have to have internet connection.
I absolutely hate the JB update After flashing and doing the factory reset, there is noticable sluggishness on the launcher and app drawer without forcing GPU rendering. Feel like the whole point of "Project Butter" is that it should just work.
The onscreen keyboard responsiveness is awful and a huge step back from ICS. I'm no longer able to touch type quickly as trying to do so on JB will result in many missed characters. I became proficient at typing on the keyboard, I shouldn't have to step back in order to just be able to type words without missing characters.
Losing the ability to use my synched bookmarks from Chrome is a pain in the neck.
Game performance is hugely impacted by JB on the Prime. GTA3 is pretty much unplayable on JB!
Looking now into unlocking and flashing to an ICS rom as I feel like my tablet is now in the worst state it's ever been. The stability of the browser is great don't get me wrong but for all of the functionality I've essentially lost to get that, it just isn't worth it.
My prime experience with jelly bean has been great. Not perfect, but in comparison to ICS, it has been great
Well, when I updated to JB with a locked bootloader and lost root, JB wasn't all that great: still some ANRs and a lot of lag. I just recently unlocked, regained root, and installed all my mods: since then JB really is a godsend. Browser is ridiculously quick and scrolling is unbelievable (browser2ram). Overall feel is definitely improved.
Biggest gripe is the HDMI out got porked, and the backspace issue isn't fun either. But dear lord it's so much smoother than ICS (all my animations are set to .5x), in all respects. Still lags when installing apps, but doesn't come to a halt like ICS.

good info! Also seems ppl are more happy with the update by the poll. I guess I've been paranoid for nothing. Although I can also see why it may still be a good idea to have NVFlash.
