[Q] Why won't Kies give me the option to update firmware? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Kies on mac and when I connect my GS3 it says I have the latest software. I have XXALE8 and I need the XXALF2. my phone is silenced during calls. You can't hear me and I cant hear you. i'm sure it's the firmware. i have an unbranded UK version. Now why does KIES say my firmware is up to date when it's not. I really need to flash the lates firmware before I sell this phone

Probably because Samsung hasn't made it available for your phone yet, but you could update offline with Odin.

This happened to me some days ago. Kies reported last firmware installed. No problems with stock rom ALE8, but I flashed stock ALF2 with odin, then flashed cf-root 6.2.
Try to flash with odin. Hope this helps.

I have a MAC, is there anyway besides ODIN and Kies? I've tried Heimdall (ODIN equivalency) but that does not play well with MAC like it should. My phone is busted. i need to upgrade or I will sell this baby.

You sell your phone because you can't update with mac? Root your phone and you will never have to connect it to your pc

how can I root this baby if i dont have odin?

You can try to use odin in parallels (http://www.parallels.com). I've found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13157189&postcount=7
But I can't ensure you that it works fine with s3. Don't forget to install drivers on Windows.
Or use bootcamp....

You might've heard of a magic place called 'Google Search'.
Here's the result of a few seconds search:
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx/
You'll then be able to flash any firmware you want through CWM

Format drive, install your favorite Linux distribution

[Q] Unable to upgrade through Kies

hi.
i've been trying since yesterday to upgrade to gingerbread with no luck.
Kies detects my phone and prompts me to upgrade. right when it's supposed to start the procedure, it loses connection with the phone then reconnects and prompts me again to upgrade. so i'm stuck in this loop.
i have the latest version, i tried to uninstall/re-install Kies several times, reboot the computer, hard reset the phone, unroot.. nothing worked.
can't use odin either. i downloaded the firmware S5830JPKP9 from samfirmware but there were olny 3 files included (APBOOT_S5830JPKP9, CODE_S5830JPKP9, GT-S5830-MULTI-CSC-OJPKP3) and no MODEM file. someone already bricked his phone flashing it without the modem file.
so now im stuck!

Try flashing another 2.3.3 if you are planning to use the other 2.3.3 but without MODEM . That way it'll ensure greater safety when changing versions

Thanks Samsung
Kies is the best tools to upgrade firmware, as it peform full backup and full restore during upgrade.
How much time you perform upgrade with ODNI, and install all you apps + data ? waste a lot times.....
kies is best suited for newbies like me, once i flashed my phone with odin without backing up my data it was like hell installing every thing back.... now a days i use Titanium back up pro or My back up pro before flashing my phone with odin,,,

well i tried it and it works but i'm really disappointed with this firmware.
wake up lag is worse than with froyo. some weird behavior with calls and with titanium backup..
i'm thinking of going back to froyo :'(
Even I spent a whole day over trying to upgrade with Kies. It threw up all kinds of weird errors, sometimes quit downloading saying it's corrupt, or just stop in the middle of installation and bricked my phone. Finally just ODIN'd the one-package from samfirmware. It works over DDKC1. No need for any other GB as base first.
To me , I'd rather use iTunes than Kies . It throws less errors .

Kies update after Odin update - F1 - my boss will **** me

Hi guys
I am new here and i have, for me, a BIG proglem...
My boss gave me his phone, i9100, to update it on ICS 4.0.3. I updated phone through Odin, everything went ok, my boss was happy
Then, he noticed some minor bugs and he asked me to downgrade phone on GB 2.3.4
I used checkfus to download 2.3.4 for our contry and restored GB 2.3.4. Again, everything went ok.
Then, my smart boss, connects phone to KIES and KIES showed error that he, KIES, cannot recognize phone?!
Now my boss is freaking out because he thinks he lost warranty and he is blaming me about his "loss" of warranty.
When i entered, Volume UP+Home+Power, it shows "0" in counter and "samsung official"?
What seems to be a problem? How can i restore GB so phone can be recognized through KIES?

You have not reinstalled the original firmware and codes no longer match on Kies server .

No stock is still Samsung warranty .
Download your original firmware via CHECKFUS flash via Odin then connect to KIES .

Your boss sounds like a real dickhead.
It's probably a difference in region, hence Kies won't allow you to upgrade.
Samsung are very relaxed regarding user firmware upgrades. I had 10+ counts in firmware upgrade counts and Samsung still fixed my phone free of charge (faulty proxy sensor)
Just tell your boss to chill out.
Flash your country CSC file and choose your CSC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
But 2.3.4 is very old, I suggest you to flash 2.3.6.
Tell your boss to go **** off if he cant do it himself. Useless piece of ****... I hate those people who got a high position on the on cost of others.

I allready did that
1. Open checkfus
2. i am looking window > choose a firmware?
3. selecting android
4. gt-i9100
5. serbia (telenor) - gt-i9100LKAMSR
then download and flash through odin, is that step-by-step guide correct?
if this is correct i did that and KIES cannot recognize
Is something in my procedure in odin wrong?

He had that GB 2.3.4 before updating via Odin.
ps. sorry for my modest knowledge about my OWN problem, i know how to flash but thats it
Anyone?
Has he tried uninstalling Kies and Samsung drivers, rebooting PC, reinstall Kies + drivers, reboot and then try connecting to Kies?

As shaq1907 said you need to flash the correct csc file. If I understanded correctly, the kies says "Kies can't update this phone" or something like that.

Kies update after Odin flashing
Just flash your phone into older firmware and update via OTA. After OTA update, Kies will support update for your firmware.
Here is how I did it.
1. Flash XWKL3 (2.3.3) by Odin
2. Update via OTA (Under About phone=>Software update) <- Still Gingerbread
3. Connect to PC and now it is supported by Kies.
4. Update to ICS using Kies.
If you encountered update failure in Step 2, don't worry and keep trying until it success.

[Q] No update available after unroot

Good day,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone, which I recently unrooted. I followed this guide to unroot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613
I used Odin3, v1.85. The file I put in the PDA section was downloaded from the site in the guide and was the following: I9300XXALF5_I9300PROALF1_I9300XXLF5_HOME.tar.md5
I did run into some problems while attempting to unroot though, a few times I started the process in Odin to find it had failed after the first quarter of the bar was filled. I think this might have had something to do with my pc ejecting my phone whenever it felt like, but I'm not completely sure (the rooting was done on a different pc by someone else). Of course, because of that I couldn't properly start my phone and it gave me an error message about the firmware not being correctly installed. I persisted and eventually I got it working, though no idea how I managed.
Now, before the root and during the root I had Android 4.1.1, but after the unrooting it went to 4.0.4. Whenever I try to search for an update, either via WiFi, 3G or even Kies on the pc, it says there aren't any new updates. Device status is normal, and custom binary download is No. Bought my phone in Belgium, if that matters any.
Screenshot of the about screens in attachment. Is there anything I can do to get it to update, preferably without the use of Odin?
Please be gentle, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this and I'm not looking to reroot.
Thank you for reading through!
just connect your phone with computer and update via samsung kies
else, download the firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware/ for your country and flash using pc odin

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I however already tried with Samsung Kies, and it says there isn't an update there too. I tried finding the latest firmware on the site you linked for unrooting, and it came up with the file I mentioned in the first post, which resulted in 4.0.4. I'm kinda hesitant to flash again, since I encountered problems when I unrooted.
EDIT: Just tried with Kies again, and it tells me it is the latest firmware. It says something like this:
PDA:LF5/PHONE:LF5/CSC:LF1 (PRO)
Root your phone again
And install mobile odin
Then wipe data and cache using Mobile Odin
It will factory reset
Then you will see that your device status becomes normal
Then go to super su settings and choose full unroot

Thank you! I will try that soon, when I have time. Just a question though, is there no need for Triangle Away with this method? I remember using it for the unroot before.
I think you should also use triangle away to reset the flash counters

Guess I'll post it here for people who happen upon the same problem.
Got it fixed, using this guide:
androidcritics.com/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-official-android-4-1-1-jelly-bean-xxdlib-firmware/
Basically just used Odin to flash the file downloaded there (I9300XXDLIB_I9300OXFDLI1_I9300XXDLIB_HOME.tar.md5) on the phone, worked after the second try. I think my problem is that my computer decides to eject my phone whenever it feels like.
After flashing 4.1.1, it found and installed 4.1.2 update, so I think it's fixed now.
Thanks to everyone who helped. Cheers!

Updating to 4.1.2

Hi
Today was released v4.1.2 for my girlfriend SII.
She's still on 2.3.3, the phone is rooted but she can't update through kies because of binary count.
What's the easiest way to solve this?
1-Using triangle away and update using kies (assuming that after using triangle away she can update)?
2-Using odin to manual update? Does she still needs to use triangle away?
3-Her carrier is TMN Portugal. But since it' probably full of bloatware can she use TPH (no carrier) from Portugal firmware?
4-Can she use triangle away on gingerbread (2.3.3)?
Thanks
Download the 4.1.2 firmware you want from Sammobile.com.
From what i know, if you flash a stock firmware your binary count will revert to 0 (not sure though)
About the carrier thing, i don't know. But you can root it aswell on 4.1.2 and then you can use titanium (or other software) to freeze or uninstall bloatwares..
Get the ROM you like (it doesn't matter if it's from portugal or not, branded or unbranded) from sammobile like the above poster said and Mobile Odin (play store), that's the easiest way to do it.

Instead of mobile odin which is a paid application on the market can i simple use the windows version of odin?
I know there's a lite version here on xda, but we have to manually install another file, and seems easier just using odin pc version.
Sorry for the newbie questions but it's not my phone.

Yes.
Put the phone in download mode. Connect to pc install drivers etc, then make sure you kill kies in task manager on windows. Or whatever OS your using. Then open odin. And flash the desired rom.tar to your phone. Simple as that
There are many guides for using odin. If you need any help just ask.
Edit-
as far as im aware, triangle away works on every version of android i have tried. As long as its rooted.

Try triangle away and them update via kies if is not working put phone in download mode and flash latest firmware from sammobile via odin

The M.O app is free, M.O Pro is paid.
M.O will flash and wipe.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 Heimdall Problems OSX 10.6.8

Hi, I have been trying to root my Galaxy S2 and I can't get Heimdall to detect the phone. I put it in download mode and connect it to the computer, then run the detect function and it cant find the device. I have searched for hours for answers on why this is happening but I can't seem to find the reason.
One answer i found was to use kextunload to make sure no other USB drivers were loaded and interfering with the phone when it was being plugged in but it didn't work for me.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy SII GTI9100
Network: Meteor Ireland
Kernel: KF3
Android : 2.3.3 Gingerbread
CSC: KE1
All I want to do is update my OS, however it can't be updated via Kies because my CSC and Location are different(I think), I just get the message "Your devices current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies".
Any help would be great, thanks in advance!

Gingerbread right? Not that easy to root without a PC.
