Flashlight App using the most data... - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I just check my data usage in the phone settings and apparently my flashlight app is using a TON of data. How is this possible? Has anyone else had this happen?
Sent from my EVO using XDA

Not sure which flashlight app you're using, but that certainly doesn't seem right. I like Tiny Flashlight, primarily because you can turn it on from the lockscreen just by shaking the phone. It reports zero data usage, for what it's worth.

Malware is how that's possible. Could also be a terribly inefficient ad engine, but that seems unlikely given how much data it's using. Report that app to Google and uninstall it.
Tiny flashlight is good. I use TeslaLED because I like Teslacoil software.

LOVE Teslacoil! Nova Prime and WidgetLocker are both great apps and well worth the few bucks they want for them.

That's the stock HTC flashlight malware very unlikely
Also I checked my usage and the HTC flashlight doesn't even show up on usage...

I'm using the HTC Flashlight and it doesn't even show up on my usage list. Probably because it isn't using any data. I'd suspect something is wrong on your phone.

Is it possible to have another app that spoofs as the flashlight when it shows up in usage? I ask because the flashlight shouldn't be using any data at all, and I don't know if its just the image quality, but the flashlight image in your screenshot doesn't look like the htc one to me. It's very close, but it's just a bit off.

I got the stock HTC flashlight, and it uses 0 data.

This is a good thought. OP, can you uninstall or disable the HTC app? If so, and the data usage continues with that same icon, it's probably safe to assume something else is spoofing it.

I had some trouble uninstalling. HTC hub didn't recognize that it was installed. Once I finally uninstalled the app with root explorer, I had trouble getting HTC hub to properly REinstall that app. I had to find an old apk from xda, install that, then HTC hub allowed me to update that app.
I'll keep a close eye on the data usage to see if it continues to change.
Thanks guys

Where did you install it from in the first place? If HTC hub didn't recognize it as installed then I'm guessing you got the apk from elsewhere and it was a fake...

It was included in the rom I downloaded. I never installed the flashlight app myself. I control the led flash from my homescreen with the SwitchPro widget. The only reason I noticed it was even installed was when I checked my data usage.
Edit:
I'm using Flex 360's "stock with goodies" rom v1.3

And what Rom did it come with that you installed?

Well, if you look at HTC Hub the icon in his screenshot marches the icon they use in the hub BUT the screenshot doesn't match the icon in the app drawer. The icon in Hub definitely has less of a tint to it than the icon used in drawer.

I've been monitoring my data usage since I deleted the problematic flashlight app and reinstalled it from HTC hub....all seems to be well now.

did anyone post in the dev's thread to notifiy him of a possible issue? (or see if any other users are experiencing this?)

I'm using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=droid.pr.coolflashlightfree.
try it it's free.

I'm using Tiny Flashlight + LED which is great. Very useful and has a great widget to quickly turn on/off the light.

[Q] Flashlight app using the camera flash?

I cant believe HTC didnt include this with the Evo 3D, i used the flashlight on my Evo 4G all the time.
Anyone know of an app that works the same (widget to toggle on and off). Tried the Evo 4G app, didnt work.
Rockypr posted one here for us. Thank him, not me.

I'm using "LED light" from the market. It seems to be the most basic flashlight app that doesn't require much usage of the phone. It's a simple vertical off - on widget switch. Has a 1.5 second delay after you switch on.

Live Wallpaper/Stand Alone App - Live Feed Camera.

Let me start off by saying I don't know too much about any technicalities or requirements needed by hardware for applications. This is simply an idea.
Now how possible would it be to have an app/live wallpaper that uses the camera either front, back or both and overlays the home screen entirely. In other words having a realtime camera feed as a live background.
Again its an idea but there can be a feature able to instantly screenshot an image from the actual feed and use it as a stationary wallpaper on the go or just as an easier way to take a photo.
The world is your background. Let's say I have the wallpaper applied and I see a interesting wall with graffiti. I can pull out the phone either record a short 5-10 second clip or snap a picture to use as my wallpaper with ease.
Any feedback as to the likelihood of something like this or similar being possible is welcomed.

Battery Hog it is. I've used it to show off a couple times but to use it daily i would need a double stacked extended battery.

missing htc apps

Is there a way to get missing htc apps like htc notes+widget htc hub flash light app and fm radio as an installable APK without root
Good call, I didn't realize they weren't included..can anyone provide these apks? Or is it as simple as copying them from my Dinc to the SD card and installing on the phone?

Yeah, I was wondering where the flashlight widget was after I got to go through my phone yesterday. The greedy bastards at Verizon strike again.
TeslaLED works well enough, but I love the three levels of intensity offered by the HTC widget. I wonder if anyone has done an app that gives you a slider to vary the light intensity.
Haven't tried all the flashlight apps, the market has too many. Once we get root you can use the htc flashlight apk.

The one called LED Light is HTC themed.
I don't see why having root would make a difference for the HTC Flashlight app. Maybe there's a reason that I don't know. I have that apk and it will not install.

It's a system apk and will not install except with a root level adb push. It may also need libs that are not there.

I was able to get it to "work" on my phone after sending the apk to my phone and copying it to /system/app using root explorer, however it only works on one level instead of 3 like on the Dinc.
I was able to get the apps needed to install by hacking the manifest but I can't get the htc options to load.
Im still working on it. I got to at least show the get more options on each category

that's not on this phone. it's on every sense 1.0 phone, but not the higher sense ones. all it says is "show all HTC widgets" instead of "get more htc widgets" like it used to..and show all just litearlly shows all of the HTC ones on the phone in one list. annoying.

Yeah we need hub.
from what i can see there are about 5 apps needed for htc hub to operate. i was able to get them to install and myhtc to install by hacking the manifest. there is still something crucial missing. perhaps libs as nils said. hard to trouble shoot without root.
on sense 3.5 it is different. the get more options is on the top right instead of at the bottom like on sense 3.0. as i said i was able to get that to show up but connecting to htc hub caused fc
I did find a flashlight app somewhere but dont remember where and it does fully work. Also couldnt we port over those apps like notes hub and fm radio from a HTC Sensation XL system dump or rom?

You would think someone coming here from the 3d would have it handy somewhere. To prevent someone from having to DL an entire ROM just to get it. I came from Evo 4g to here, so I'm not familiar with newts, and dont have any files from 3d forum.
Actually, I'll bet any Gapps package would have it, I would think. I just was surprised it didn't come stock. I use the widget on my main homescreen.

Genie widget = news and weather app.
This one can be installed like a normal data app. I renamed it so I would remember what it was since genie widget hardly gives any clue. Just download it to your sd card and click it and it will install like any other app. The menu key shows up on it as well which didn't work for me on my transformer Prime if I used the system/app version. Kind of hard to customize without a menu key. Not sure if that would be an issue on the EVO LTE but I didn't care to find out.
Although I am unsure if the HTC version had better customization or widgets than the stock google version which is what this is I believe. I only use it for the app. I would give credit to whoever posted it but I can't even remember where I got it. I used google search awhile ago to find it.
I actually have a couple that will install like a regular app as well. I'll post them tonight
I have one with no background and one with a smoke/transparent background.
I sent a PM to Newt and asked if he could help me get the one from his port to work on our phones..hoping he hooks us up.
Works, but when tapping on the weather screen for a hourly view, it has an error reading "Unfortunately, News & Weather has stopped". That feature was a big plus with this app, hope someone can figure out how to get that to work again.

You have force gpu rendering enabled on your phone. Settings>Developer options>Force GPU rendering.
Uncheck that and it will work.
Also, I'm not sure you know this but tapping the weather icon on HTC's weather clock widget that most people seem to keep on their homescreen brings up a screen with weather details and at the bottom there are tabs where you can look at the hourly conditions as well in a little more detail.

Nice. thanks
Radio is now 1.12.11.1119 and 4G is working inside my office building...no more having to go outside it seems.....
Updates to the Gallery. Now when you open it up you can pick the source
Update to the music app. Same with gallery...you can pick the source.
Update to how it handles 4G and WiFi..basically promising to turn them off when it knows it won't need them as opposed to always scanning.
Update to message app. There are more settings for personalization such as changing bubble colors and background
Low res contact fix which is common for all 4.1 I think
Color scheme change from green to blue to match JB
Pin enabled lock screen change
You can open up the maps to see where your pictures were taken
Stock browser has new look and is JB updated
Power saver
Keyboard has been changed up as well. Now can turn off arrows. Can't turn off prediction (well idk how to)
And more stuff...so far what I pointed out is just what I found to be important to me. I just now got to install this >.< I unrooted and updated.
Edit:
The HTC music app widget in the notification area now has the option to go back as well as pause and go forward
Wallpapers no longer scroll (figuring out of this is on purpose or if there's something i need to mess with)
