[Q] I'm not one to waste time, so we gotta root method yet? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Title says it all. Anything known to root it with?

Not for the us variant. Prolly within a couple days though.

I'd figure YouTube will be flooded by the weekend with how tos

nope try the method the gsm international one uses let us know how that goes lol

I tried using the international method and Flashing CWM doesn't work. It'll flash, but your phone won't be able to boot into recovery mode at all. Mine kept trying to go into recovery mode every time I powered it on until I was able to get it to boot into Download mode. Now I'm fairly certain the recovery mode on my phone is borked, so I'll be looking around for a stock recovery restore method or a CWM method intended for this phone.
TL;DR: DO NOT TRY USING THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION ROOT METHOD!!!

To be clear, I didn't actually expect it to work and was fully aware that it could jack up my phone, but one does not make an omlete without breaking a few eggs so I thought I'd give it a shot anyway.
Also, the phone still works with the exception of Recovery mode not working at all (and no Root obviously).

TEP GO GO!

can't wait for root, already found some pre-loaded apps i need to get rid of.

I'm sure the Epic CM Team will begin work on CWM as soon as they receive their S3's. Shouldn't be too long of a wait

Agreed. I'm getting itchy to Root and i've only had it 3 hours.

no root till we get our 32g's

I think Chainfire here in xda may be working on a root method for U.S. versions.

I think I borked my recovery too :-(. It flashed but no recovery. I also noticed a counter that says 3 for the 3 times i tryed flashing?

Same here, just moved off my HTC and did a full TB....I got apps/settings waiting to be put back. HEHE.
Meanwhile I'm enjoying the AMOLED....

I did same with recovery, but was able to flash clockwork recovery with odin and push superuder with adb

I think there's a root method in the Development section now.

there still isnt a root...bricked my phone last night and was at Sprint all morning to little avail. They ordered me a replacement but I wont receive it for 5 days. I asked if they could try flashing the stock bootloader but the tech said they didnt even have it yet...

There is root now. I have busybox su and cw installed already. Check the dev section

[Q] HTC EVO 3D CDMA bricked?

Okay guys, I have an HTC Evo 3D CDMA that is somewhat unusable. All I did was root the phone and in a few days the phone just wouldn't start up. It gets stuck on the HTC logo. I've tried getting it into download mode to flash a new stock firmware (but it didn't want to), I've tried to put the .zip stock firmware file onto the sd card to "install zip from sd card", I've tried to put the update file on the sd card to install it through "hboot", and even factory resetting it, but it still would get stuck on the logo and fail to boot up. I've tried just about everything I can think of, or find on the internet. Any other suggestions or solutions?

Were you able to reflash a kernel or the stock ROM?
I couldn't flash ANYTHING. -_-

I made the mistake of flashing one of the stock roms derived from RUU which was a big mistake since it flashed the hboot I no longer have revolutionary which lead me to not being able to fastboit anything. I can get the adb to.connect to the device while in recovery with system mounted. but that's pretty much it. If i install a custom ROM when I reboot revolutionary will see device but not ling enough to.root and install the drivers. Just setup your pc to use fastboot otherwise you might do the same thing I did. After two days of searching trying different things my fix was going and buying a new phone last night.

If you relocked your phone "fastboot oem lock" and installed a stock RUU, this should have brought your phone back to stock. This wasn't the case?

When you root your phone, never accept updates unless you unroot your phone and go back to stock. Are you on hboot 1.5? I would suggest finding a rom that you want to flash (I recommend Myn's warmtwopoint3 RLS1 Deodex). To do this go into fastboot USB and load the custom recovery in the folder you downloaded to root your phone "fastboot boot recovery.img" (recovery.img should be replaced with the name of the CWM***.img file in that folder. This will give you full access to write the kernal and install the rom). Your issue is only likely kernal related so unless you do what I just mentioned, you wont have access to write a new kernal.

Does it still show hboot 1.4? According to the instructions, after the PG86IMG.zip installs, you need to go into fastboot and type "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3"
I think your probably just doing something wrong. Pull your battery out, put it back in, hold down volume button and power to boot into bootloader. Explain to me what you see. You should see fastboot on the top and you should be able to press the power button to enter fastboot and when you plug in your phone it will show fastboot usb. If this isnt happening I'm very curious as to what is.

Thanks for the help everyone!
Hi everyone. The only reason why I wrote this status was because I rooted the phone for someone, and gave it back to them in working order. Then about a week later, they came back to me with that problem and I tried to fix it. But with no success as I stated above. They threatened to sue me or take me to small claims for this problem which i didn't even start. Talk about assholes. Anyways, they gave me the option of paying them 350 which is half of what they bought the phone for, or having me try to fix it. If I do fix it, no need to pay, but if I don't then I'd have to pay the full price which is 700. So I've decided to just pay them the 350 to shut their mouth, get my ass out of trouble, and get on with my life.
So yea, I guess I won't be needing this thread anymore. I really want to try fixing it to save me money, but I don't want to risk it. And yea, I know how much of an asshole they're being. But oh well, shows what kind of people they are.
Were you paid initially for services rendered, when first "working" on the phone? Did you make mention any guarantee/warranty for "work" performed? At any time was this person/persons aware of such forum/s which clearly express "do this at your own risk"?

Anytime your altering anything on anyone's phone always run them through the normal disclaimer. Make certain that they understand that you take ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY for any damage that might be caused by what THEY want you to do. **** happens sometimes and and you gotta cover your ass. This is why every Rom, Radio/firmware updates, themes and guides have the same disclaimer.

Just read the OP again. You only rooted the phone, didn't install a custom ROM? Also, after rooting it, the person whom you rooted the phone came to you after a week, not a day or two? In that time frame who knows what they tried to do. Also, someone mentioned a kernel issue as the most likely culprit. Are you able to get into recovery, volume down + power/recovery? Can you get to the bootloader/HBOOT screen? If you get anything other than just the bootloader screen, you may still salvage it. Any progress?

Did you check the SD card for anything that you didn't put on there? Sounds like you were scammed to me. Give me half now or try to fix it and if you can't you have to pay me full. Something doesn't sound right with that. Sounds like they didn't want to give you enough time to dig to deep into the phone. Did you check to see if it was even the same phone? Did you charge them for this service originally? What was the reason why they wanted root access?

That was the mistake I made, by NOT telling them that. Which is why I have absolutely NOTHING to cover my ass. Which is the reason why I'm going to pay for it to get out of this mess.

I don't have the phone with me right now. Which is why I can't try anymore repairs. And I'm not going to in case it fails, then I'll have to pay full price.

I don't remember what I did and didn't put on there. So I can't use that as a way to back myself up. And I honestly started thinking that it is a scam, but again, it is kind of is my fault for not taking extra precautionary measures to protect myself in the event that this thing happens. Yes, I did charge for the service. And they didn't say why they wanted it rooted. And even if they are scamming me, I'm just glad it happened sooner so that I could learn from it and prepare myself for the future. As for the money, I am bummed that I have to pay them, but God knows who's the better person and what kind of people they are so I'll let God deal with them.
I have the same issue, sort of. A friend brought me his Evo 3D for me to work on.
My friend 'rooted' his Evo3D through some steps up on youtube that claims root for the 1.5 hboot with S-ON. He then later DL Rom Manager and flashed the freEVO ROM. Now its only useful for WIFI, connected media/google talk/phone dialer/contacts do not work, they all say 'Could not launch the requested activity.'. I have tried factory resetting but it resets to the same issue, cant flash any other rom since there is no actual recovery.
Any ideas on how I can make this thing work

My friend's phone tried to pull an OTA while he had CWM recovery installed, and it started boot looping. Had to download the stock recovery, name is PG05IMG.zip in the root of the SDCard, and force the phone to boot to the bootloader and install it. Once it did, the phone started up, rebooted itself, and installed the OTA fine. Sounds like yours may be trying to do something similar?
If so rooted phones need caches cleared for the ota to work.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
From my understanding, Rooted can still take OTA, but you have to have stock recovery to do it (as I witnessed earlier). You will lose root, and will have to re-flash recovery to TWRP, CWMR, or whatever your normal choice is, and then re-apply the su.zip, but otherwise easy as pie.

Hello, first of all I would like to thank everyone who has posted in this thread to try and help out. I just started having a very similar problem- I'm rooted and running stock, but apparently my phone accepted an OTA and I'm stuck in a bootloop as well.
I got into CWM recovery and downloaded the stock recovery PG05IMG.zip, but it won't install. It just aborts every time I try to install it. I'm a noob at this stuff and not very good at dealing with these sorts of things and I've been having a panic attack for the past hour, so if anyone could help me as soon as possible I would really appreciate it.
I'm really scared of making things worse than they already are. I just want a working phone.

pull battery, wait a minute, turn on phone
when in bootloader screen,
volume down, select reboot
back to white screen, select recovery ( i had to do this twice)
hold volume up and power when black screen appears
choose the bottom option (wipe cache i believe)
choose reboot
phone should be good aftter this
( idont own a thunderbolt, but i had to fix this for a nother phone, called tech support and this worked)
hope this helps - hopefully saves someone from ruu'ing and wiping their phone

The zip won't work in CWM because it's not designed for use with CWM. It's designed for use in Fastboot. Should be on the root of your sd card. From off, if I'm correct (like this with other HTC devices), hold volume down and power to boot into fastboot. This will allow it to flash the stock recovery.

Failed to boot 2 Android Recovery 2.3.4

Hello, Out of desperation for a quick answer as I find many on 2.3.5 or situations that aren't the same as mine, I tried flashing MIUI and it failed. I made a backup prior but then it failed .. I tried it a few times and so I decided to reboot device.. I am now stuck.. I rooted my wifes phone right after she got it about a year or so ago and so It's using the recovery that you boot into while running the phone. I"ve never been able to get to recovery unless I open the app "System Recovery". I click install recovery.. then boot recovery.. I don't even know what it's called it's been so long.
Anyway, Now I can't even do anything. As soon as I plug the phone in it sits at the dual core logo and does nothing. I can get to fastboot but have no idea what to try. My battery is probably not charging and I"m screwed on how to charge it to as it doesn't seem to power off and charge once plugged in. I know she was on 2.3.4 last time I looked and it failed everytime she tried to update. She uses her phone for her business hence my desperation to fix quickly. I've been clicking links frantically but can't seem to find a clear cut solution as I'm just not able to get into recovery. Thanks for any help!!!

I've never heard of a "system recovery" app. To get into the custom recovery just press and hold volume + power until fastboot appears. Press down until you see android recovery. Press up to enter it. Then restore your backup. You can do all of this with a dead battery or no battery as long as it's plugged it. What recovery are you using?
Reading it again looks like bootstrap?? That's not a real recovery, it's almost useless. You can't install ROMs like MIUI with it. You have to unlock your bootloader and use a custom recovery to do that! If you want to restore without losing data you'll want to SBF back to stock.

Thanks for the reply. When I get to android recovery I get the error in the title. It just sits there. I guess bootloader is what it is. I can't even get into recovery and that is my issue. It just says failed to boot 2. This photon is garbage imo. I've had the EVO now the EVO LTE and both were so simple but this one just confuses the hell out of me. I'm a flashaholic on my evos but I rarely attempt anything on the wife's as it seems way more complicated. I'm sure its not and if it was my phone I'd have more patience but the wife hates me at the moment so I'm desperate lol. Any other solutions besides boot into recovery cause that just isn't working...I was able to get into recovery when it was working but now it goes to the error and sits on the logo.

nah man! the photon is a great device. it's nearly impossible to brick it. which i love. you don't have a custom recovery. that's why you get an error. you're just seeing the stock recovery. which isn't a recovery, it's just made to factory reset. pressing volume up + down will allow you to see the recovery without the error. you need to SBF if you want to get the system back. that is the BEST solution if you are on 2.3.4. once you do that. you can unlock the bootloader if you want. but that wipes all your data. so backing up would be necessary. this is the same all devices. INCLUDING THE EVO. if you are locked forever and on 2.3.5 you need to do some work arounds as there's no sbf available.

BOOTSTRAP IS NOT A REAL RECOVERY. YOU CANNOT FLASH UNLOCKED ROMS THROUGH IT. KEEP THAT IN MIND!
U need to flash sbf file throught the pc open youtube search for a video called .how to unbrick photon .by qbking77 that will fix ur phone if u face any problem just ask ur problem is completly fixable just be patient

You guys are saviours! This fixed me right up. Now to root properly. I always thought she was rooted as she had root access and what looked to me like an Amonra recovery. The full root process sounds a little more in depth than the EVO but I'm sure ill figure it out. Thanks again for all your help!
So can you guys recommend a Rom? I hate the motoblur and was leaning towards miui since I've ran it before but am open to suggestions.

U r wellcome first if u want a new rom u should unlock ur bootloader and install a reall recovery not the bootstrap
U can also see a qbking channel for unlocking photon bootloader then the recovery
If u find any difficulty just ask
ALL THIS IF UR 2.3.4
IF I HELPED U JUST PRESS THANK BUTTON

as mentioned above if you're on 2.3.5. you cannot unlock your bootloader. it's permanently locked! that phone will most likely never see a true ROM. like CM, MIUI, AOKP, etc. no way around this whatsoever. sorry my friend.
again, don't attempt to flash any ROMs through bootstrap except stock locked ROMs.
if you're on 2.3.4 you should try out CM or AOKP or PA!!! unlocking is easy.
I'm unlocked and ready to roll! I was always on 2.3.4 so thank god that ota always failed I think I'm gonna give a look at that PA rom you mentioned if I can find what PA stands for lol. I've tried CM on my evo's and AOKP was still a bit buggy and my wife needs her phone to work on almost every function (camcorder not so much..) Bluetooth is huge! I think MIUI is goin up first she likes the look of that but what does PA stand for? . Thanks again for all your help! Thanks button hit for all!!

Paranoid Android!
Gonna give Paranoid a go.. I flashed MIUI 5 times and it just hangs on the bootanimation. Never did get to the rom. Hopefully I have better results with aokp and paranoid. I realized that's what it was right after posting but thanks again!

Sort of a big problem, maybe? Help wanted.

So i decided to restore to stock as I do this on occasions...once on stock, i actually decided I'd download the verizon OTAs that were available. After doing so, the phone rebooted, installed one OTA, rebooted, selected the newer OTA, rebooted and after that if just keept looping the "Samsung Galaxy Note II" start up screen and its on for a milisecond then reboots and continues.
After that kept happening I decided to use imnuts Back to stock odin method AGAIN as that is what i always use (thanks to imnuts btw) and the file provided ive been using to restore to stock just keeps failing and failing...I'm not sure where to turn, i cant use casual because i cant boot into an OS. help? direction? advise?
anyone have any input thats useful?
so i tried to restore to stock and it for some reason the file kept failing when it began installation through Odin...then it would fail, so i tried a few times and no go, downloaded a new file, it wasnt the file, still no go....SOooo, I decided to try Adams Casual root/unlock yada yada...so i while still in Download moade, i booted up Casual and ask for it to do what it does....first time around, it loaded up TWRP and i thought i was good to go...some how, i accidentally asked Casual to re run its process....after that the phone would only boot to the samsung splash screen and then immediately reboot, can't boot into recovery only Download..
When i try to go back to stock using Odin now, Odin doesnt recognize my phone being connected any more and i just reinstalled the drivers but no go....any help?
am i bricked!?
Id just send the phone back to vzw as long as you have no physical damage tp it you should ve good

well im actually waiting on a box to send it back out cause of cracked screenage BUT after alll of that, if i try to boot into recovery, I get this message saying "software not supported yada yada. Please bring to Verzion for managing yada yada" either way it states non compatible software, meaning its a custom recovery but wont boot into it i think because it has a locked bootloader....so i cant just send it back until i get it back to stock...which is what got me here in the first place

Have you tried the PIT? The alternative should work but you could also try root66.

I suggest taking a look at the safestrap thread in the general section. Hashcode is working on a method for me7 romming. Its a wip at the moment. Also take a look at xposed framework and the wanam module on the play store. Youll atleast be able to do some general customization. I use it and its pretty damn awesome.

Don't mean to jack the thread, but I've got a related question.
While rooting my friends phone I attempted to flash a recovery... But the phone is on ME7 so it obviously didn't work. Now there's no working recovery. With that, can't do a factory reset because it boots to the Odin screen on reboot.
Any way to reflash the stock recovery?

There was some stock recocery images posted here on the forums but I dont have links. If you cant find them you coulf always reflash the stock me7 image via odin. If you have apps and their data you dont want removed there is also no wipe stock images as well. Both are posted in the dev section.
