Received my preorder galaxy s3 today from ATT.. It is simply amazing but device is getting hot at the bottom after prolonged use and while it is charging..
Is it just me or someone else is having similar issues..

Yes, mine gets mildly warm. But that's after extensive use. Not sure about charging--will check.

The processor is running at all times. Then you also have to take into account screen brightness. With my phone's I notice the amount of time to heat depends on the screen brightness. The brighter the screen the faster it gets warm.
Mine got a little warm but for sure not as hot as my iPhone would get...

I had a few hours today when it was warm just sitting in my pocket while in meetings with the screen off, etc... it may have been busy sync'ing emails, but shouldn't have been working too hard yet was definitely warm. Had to take it out of my pocket and set it on the table to cool myself off...
Warm yeah. Uncomfortable NO. So far I am really enjoying my smartphone.

Come on guys we are talking about dual core with 2 gig ram. It's almost a home laptop or desktop. And not to say there is no ****ing cpu fan installed so it normal for the phone to get little hot or warm after some use or charging. Even my ipbone 4s gets hot and that ****, is only running at 800 mhz

I believe many of us are saying that the phone is getting hot while NOT using it - - just while it's in the pocket...
I had it in the car with the charger connected, doing gps navigation while listening to music via BT and the wifi was on. After 30 minutes it was uncomfortably warm bordering on what I would call hot.

Mine gets warms at the bottom, but I've also been using it a lot than I generally use my phone simply because it's new. We have one of those laser temperature sensors at work. I will probably get some readings tomorrow.

I had an AT&T HTC One X for a few weeks and returned it because I wanted this phone. Same processor. It never got hot or even warm enough to notice when using a lot (charging or not). Still waiting for stock in stores to get the GS3 but this is a real bummer IMHO as it may not be something that root/ROMs/etc. can fix.
I may be wrong about this but I believe metal dissipates heat better than plastic. I'm an electrical contractor and I deal with LED bulbs alot and I've noticed that the same exact bulb in plastic gets hotter than the ones encased in metal... Take that for whatever you may.

Would rather have a "cheap" plastic phone that gets a little warm and can take a droptest better than a heavy "premium-feeling" cold metal phone that blocks the antennas and dents.

My phone seems to be getting warm in the lower left corner of the display when I'm using it and the charger is plugged in. If I don't use it and it's on the charger I do not get this warm spot. It has persisted though multiple ROMs/Kernels. The spot is just above the menu capacitive button and I can feel it on the front and side. Prob only about the size of a dime if it were wrapped around the side of the phone. When it's not plugged in I don't notice the warm spot. Is there a component for charging under that spot? Thought about warranty return but don't really want to get a refurb.
No one uses their phone when it's charging? Will usually take about 10 or so min of playing on the phone to get the spot to warm up.

Hmm... Mine doesn't get warm there. I looked at the teardown of the international SGS2 on ifixit and it doesn't even look like there is much down there at all to get hot.
Mine gets very hot if used while charging. As hot as 128F on one occasion. It doesn't seem to matter how many apps are running. Its 105 right now with minimal use. I do keep the screen at its brightest though so I'm guessing that's the issue.

That's dangerously hot. You need to figure out what's causing that. Enough times above 125° and your battery can die or have noticeably shortened life.

Mine get the same way. Extremely hot to the point I can't hold it. Sometimes i play Zynga poker while charging and aftering 20/30 minutes my phone is burning hot and only recieved 1% battery. And sometimes i will wake up and the phone will be hot after not touching it for 6-7 hours and battery hardly charged.
I've noticed that this phone tends to heat up fairly easily..A lot of apps cause it..Not sure what to do about it though..
Mine only heats up noticeably if I play a game or something of that sort, but not really otherwise.

if you're using the battery faster than the phone can charge, this will happen. Happens to me all the time while I'm using the phone while charging.

Where at? where I described or another spot?
My phone really only sunstantially heats up when I am using any browser. Also fyi, there was another thread on this subject.
Yeah, I turned it off that time. But even if plugged in with the screen off I saw it today near 114. If I use while plugged in it jumps from the 90's to the low 100's. I'm just trying to figure out if everyone sees it that hot. I'm using battery indicator in my notifications bar to monitor.

not sure about anyone else but Just got my GS3 from sprint and turn on to activate n is working fine but the phone is getting hot. Any calibration need it? plus I'm not feeling the physical home button.
I still wish it had a dedicated camera button. I was once an iPhone owner... so the home button doesn't bother.
Mine gets warm, obviously more-so when charging. But nothing alarming yet.

I can tell you that this is not normal. My GS2 E4GT does not even get warm with heavy usage. Thanks for your input.
My Galaxy S III gets warm on just normal browsing for like 30minutes(?).
Charging, obviously, makes it a bit warmer.
My phone gets hot as a ***** when I use navigation.

thats funny because the snapdragon s4 chip was made to not get as hot as the older s3 chips did. my old SII got up to 107 to 110. the hottest ive seen this phone is 95. my old galaxy nexus was the worst. it got HOT 140's at times. this phone doesnt get any where over 95... so... there u have it... its nothing to be alarmed about. this is actually an improved product.
I found the phone got pretty warm when I used it without having the power savings on (found in settings).
Once I turned that on it nearly doesn't get as warm as it did. I'm not sure if anyone else noticed that or not.

Mine gets warm, but not hot. My iphone used to get really warm where it would shut off, this has yet to get anywhere near that.
keep in mind that the S3 is a powerhouse phone. the S3 can match the processing power of some low end computers, and think about it.. those low end computers have a large fan. I would get a task manager and as long as your phone isnt constantly above 110 or maybe even 105 you should have nothing to worry about.

Ok lol I thought 105.3 on the battery was hot, but glad to see its not just me. its funny how with all these advancements in mobile gpu technology I still don't think it out performs my intel hd 3000 integrated graphics. Thanks to the android x86 I was able to run antutu on my intel core i5 2450m @2.5 ghz and scored a 21000. I highly doubt it was accurate as Im sure it isn't optomized and it fails to make use of turbo boost. Given this isn't a low end computer, but I still don't think we are that close. Apparently the new ipad's gpu is 30 percent slower then the on in the wii.
I haven't used it heavily today, nor very recently, but the battery is up to 100℉ degrees right now. It's a pretty nice (read: comfortable) temperature in the house too.
So I have to wonder just how hot the One is going to get when summer rolls around and it's in the 90s℉.
I'm not worried about it right now, but for those of you in climates that are hot already, how is your phone holding up?
FWIW: the aluminum must disperse the heat pretty well. The temp dropped by 3 degrees while composing this message. So that's pretty nice.

It is kinda a valid question. My Lumia 920 would get so hot that if I made a call, it wasn't comfortable near my ear. It has been in the 80's here, and no problems as of yet. I have noticed that for some reason on both of my devices, the app Viber heats them up quick, that's the only one I have seen do this.
Unless you plan on leaving it on your dash, it won't matter too much. Its not a PC in a hot room.

When these new high end phones get hot (I think the One is an internal temp above 34C) they start to under clock the processor and the GPU.
So yes heat WILL effect performance.

The construction of the phone acts like a heat sink drawing heat away from the components. I was told. So mean yeah it would get hot but not really affect the phone itself.

Oh I am POSITIVE this will get nowhere near as hot as my Verizon Galaxy Nexus did....I can already tell and I have only had the phone for a day. Even just texting and doing some random playing with it to get used to everything..its pretty cool..By now my Nexus would be frying my ear if I had a call
All electronics are affected by heat..but if this is any indication,,,,it will be warm..but not enough to fry an egg on!

I used mine today in 100F in the sun, I took over 100 pics with instant upload turned on. It got pretty warm, but just under too hot to use. The phone didnt seem to mind the heat at all, it did everything without even a stutter.

Try using your phone while doing something intensive, like playing a graphics intensive game. It gets pretty hot.

I did, and it was hotter when taking pics and uploading them at the same time.
Also check if nfc is on. On my wife's she was complaining about it getting hot. Once we turned nfc off it stopped getting hot. The only time I notice mine gets hot is when I have gps on, playing ingress lol

When you play games the phone gets very hot but so does sgs4. In fact every android phone and I had a lot of them got hot when playing games except note 2.
Room/outside temperature doesn't affect the phone temp? So if it's 90 degrees in your room your phone will battery temp will be 74 like it would be on a 70-75 degree day?
Anyone else notice the htc one aluminum backside gets extremely hot when the cpu reaches over 100 degree. Usually this happen when I'm charging the battery or watching a youtube video. Sometimes it too hot to hold in my hand and I have to set it down and turn off the screens in hopes it cool down.
My galaxy note 2 always stay at 84 degree unless I'm playing games, but even the it doesn't feel really hot in my hand.
Yeah the metal conducts heat better so it can feel a lot hotter. Maybe a case could help.

If it is really that hot that u cant hold it u might want to call at&t or what ever carrier u have and tell them about the prob..or maybe thir is something bigger that is making ur phone overheat

Mine gets fairly hot with heavy use. Not too hot to hold however. It doesn't bother me. If it's getting that hot through a case I would trade it out for a new one just to be sure.

I've gotten mine up to "too hot to hold" temperatures while torrenting, listening to music and web browsing all at the same time with screen turned up to max brightness.
Mine would get really hot in the few days I had it, but now I don't notice it anymore

The aluminum body of the phone conducts heat a lot better than the plastic of other phones. So while it feels hot, its actually better for the phone, because the heat is going into the air (or into your hands) faster than it would with plastic.
The phone will throttle the cpu if it gets too hot, and completely shut off if it gets way too hot.

That doesn't seem normal to me. While my phone is charging, it doesn't get that hot. It also charges slowly. I'm guessing this is to preserve the battery. Even with usage, it doesn't get abnormally hot. Only when I start playing games. But it feels like normal heat. Not something I should be worrying about.

That is why aluminum is used for so many heatsinks on computers, cars and many engines. Its a great, lightweight, heat disperser. On the flip side though you feel it working with the warmth.

When I'm charging my HTC One overnight the next morning the red light is blinking than I want to hold the phone but it's too damn hot
When I'm turning on the phone (from hybenate) the red blinking led is off... and I see the battery is on 96-98% .. very strange..

But this happened only 2 times now (in a row actually)... today I was charging my phone normally and it fully charged! I turned off the app BatteryGuru.. maybe that's the problem...
That blinking red light and extreme heat is a signal that the battery received "too much voltage" or extreme temperature, both can permanently damage the battery and circuits.
Do what you want, but it won't be the last time you have a problem. Also, are you using the stock charger?

After disabling the BatteryGuru I luckly don't have this problem anymore..!! PFIEUWW!
I know the red blinking light is for extreme overheating, and I know that is a really bad sign..
EDIT: Yes stock charger!
Mine get hot too, when i'm using it on LTE for awhile, I guess this is normal, it wasn't that bad, my iphone5 also do the same.
Z is a little better on this.
What temperature are you guys getting. Mine is usually around 104f, too hot even with a case
jus got my s4 yesterday.. great phone! but I'm noticing that just doing normal stuff really heats her up. my s3 heated up as well, and it was on the bottom of the phone making it uncomfortable. but the s4 gets warm, or hot, on top. the ear piece gets hot and so does the camera area. I presume this is where the antennas are?
anyway how's everyone else's? good thing I don't talk on the phone often because if that thing heat up my ear I'd return this phone asap lol

It may be your service area. In places where theres low or spotty service or a fringe from 3g to 4g, the radio has to work harder, thus heating up.

Mine gets hot/warm doing normal crap too.. kind of a bummer because the Note2 doesn't get this hot.. just warm at times. I'm assuming this is where the CPU is located, near the center top area where it gets warm/hot.
It's something about Qualcomm it seems.. all of their CPUs love to heat up fast.. seems like the battery percents also drop fast whenever it warms up.
funny thing is that my DNA never gets hot, and that's the snapdragon quad core. and hwen it gets warm, it never breaks 40 degrees C.
the gs4 easily hits up to like 37, 38 degrees C....but even when my DNA is that hot, it doesn't feel that hot. the heat dissipation in that must just be better than how samsungs is. kinda worries me, but my gs3 was just as hot.
i put ktoonz kernel in, which seems to not have the CPU running at full speeds like the stock kernel does, so i think that may be helping. i might flash a custom rom next.
I'm stock rooted so I can't say for other roms/kernels. Mine doesn't break 35c which is a miracle to me coming from the heat plagued rezound where 45c can be achieved just browsing xda for 20 mins. I didn't like how hot samsungs 2amp charger makes the s4 whole charging (even during idle about 35c) so I use my htc charger which is the same 5v but only 1amp. Charges slower but will increase overall life of the battery

ha i didn't even open my s4 charger yet; didn't realize it was 2 amps..i was using the DNA charger too lol
so never over 35? are you on 4g all the time, or wifi? i'm always on 4g and i can easily hit 40. blah. but again, my s3 ran hot too, so i think it's just a samsung thing.
and yeah the rezound was a heater lol i had one.
I know I remember seeing you over there. nice to see some familiar people here. That's on 4g outside yesterday 90 degrees outside Internet browsing and some YouTube for an hour straight. The hottest ive seen was 42 but that was in my car with the sun beating on my pocket with the phone in it.

The only time mine ever got hot is when I used a sleep tracking app which required the phone be on all through the night. Being under my pillow probably didn't help either, but it the battery temperature apparently got up to 45 degrees celsius which made the phone stop charging too.
good to know it stops charging at 45...the rezound didn't lol.
mine right now is sitting at 33.6 degrees C. i'm copying like 6 gigs of music to my sd card. thing is, the earpiece and camera are very warm..the entire top of the phone. can't imagine how annoying that must be when you're talking on the phone...good thing i never make phone calls :\ lol
if you look in system panel or something, you can see that all 4 cores are like always working....and the CPU speed is hardly EVER below 700mhz when the screen is on..i find that odd. my DNA would easily hit down to like 300. it seems like the s4 cpu is always doing something..it's always above 50% on mine, never below. i find that pretty odd...bc idk what it's doing in the background. i put on ktoonz new kernel and it helps a bit, but it's still running often.

god i'm really hoping there isn't a bad batch of ones that get hot. i went through 3 at the store to pick the right one...two of them actually had banding issues on the screen....SERIOUSLY?! i thought we were past that on AMOLED?!?!
they ALL have this very faint veritcal line towards the bottom that's like white when you're looking on a gray background.....every single S4 i've seen. it's crazy. idk wtf it is. this one had it, but the least amount compared to the other 2, but i think i have a tiny piece of dust under my screen. is it really that hard to ask for a piece of technology that's perfect anymore? lol
Do you have power saving mode enabled? I do and trickstermod shows it rarely using anything above 1.3ghz which I like very much lol. Im guessing the gpu and cpu is up in the camera region as it only gets warm on mine when watching videos or having the screen on for long periods.

Holy crap I was tethering using my S4 and charging it up at the same time.. It felt dangerously hot.. I sure hot this doesn't fry the phone, i'm pretty shocked there's not a safety circuit that turns off charging when it gets this hot. This worries me as I rely on tethering for work pretty much daily.. it did seem like once it charged to 100% the heat level went down a bit.
My Note2 gets warmish when tethering and charging.. no where near the heat level of the S4.

next time you do it, check the temp with an app like system panel and report back how hot it was.

If you have a different charger, use that one Samsung gives us a 2amp charger out of the box which is nice for fast charging but is going to cause shorter overall life of the battery and hotter temps. I use my htc charger and it keeps it much cooler, especially when using it while charging

I haven't noticed any heat problems thus far. Sometimes the back under the camera gets a little warm but nothing out of hand
It runs cooler than my gnex!
Gnex and s3 always ran hot for me when torrenting or gaming. My note 2 didn't have this issue. Well because it was probably huge. And now s4 issue remains. Maybe the size of the phone? It always gets warm where the cpu sits on the board. Not a huge deal. I never let mine get scolding hot. But it'll get warm.
