[Q] Omega ROM flashes inquiry - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I was using stock firmware up until yesterday I flashed to v5.2 successfully. Everything is working fine. But I just have a question, I remember that after the flash, and the phone rebooted and I connected to my wifi...the phone automatically started to download and install all the 4 apps that i had personnally installed on the stock firmware all by itself ..
I'm asking because I see that there a v6.0 available and would like to flash that. But before I flash, do I need to do the following wipes?
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache
If so, do I need to do this for between EVERY Omega flashes to ensure it goes smoothly? Thanks

You should only have to wipe cache and dalvik then flash the ROM. You'll be fine, I also always format cache and system in the mount and storage part of Cwm recovery BEFORE flashing the ROM, never had an issue.

No, full wipe is when you delete all user data as well.

Ok I found the definitions of what a full wipe and no wipe is:
Full Wipe Install means:
- Wipe Data / Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
- Format System partition
- Install
No Wipe Install means:
- Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
- Install
Just a question, in the FULL WIPE listed above, where would I find "Format System Partition?" I don't recall seeing that..which category do I enter to do it?

CWM recovery mounts and storage format system .

Thanks, is there any harm if I do a full wipe EverytimeI upgrade an Omega ROM? I just want to stick to one way of things to minimize any issues.

[Q] CM7 wont boot?

just flashed my S2 via that:
___
Harder way:
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
___
but after I chose reboot it still is in the yellow triangle screen and nth is hap.
(more than 10 min)
that cant be good?
can I reflash via Odin?
If you can put your phone in download and Odin connects, yes you can try a stock kernal.
Go into CWM
Wipe data/cache
Wipe dalvik cache
reflash the CM7 zip.
wipe dalvik cache just worked awesome!!!

How to change ROMS from Lite'ning to MIUI

Im using a galaxy s2 with Lite'ning rom (android 4). But i couldnt resist the MIUI UI (android 2) so decided to change to it. I placed my zip files in the internal storage and reboot CWM to install the zip. But to no avail, my phone gets stuck in boot loop twice. so im wondering is it because of the different android version that my phone refuse to boot? How can I overcome it to install MIUI?
Thanks in advanced
Did you do a full wipe?
- Reboot in CWM
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe Cache
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Flash MIUI.zip

If you just relax for a minute , take a deep breath and start from the beginning. Listen to what people are telling you. Follow step by step from the beginning. Read what the developer says on flashing the rom and then it will work. Almost impossible not to get the rom working after that. It will all come together mate. Read a lot of posts. Good luck.

[Q] Twrp recovery -- do I also wipe system before flashing new rom?

Hello. I have backed up my stock rom and would like to flash a new custom rom. Team Win Recovery is all new to me as I used clockwork recovery and Amon RA on my old evo 4g. Before I flash a new rom, I know I'm supposed to wipe cache and dalvik, but do I also wipe system? Thank you for your help in advance.
If you're flashing a different ROM all together, then I usually do Factory Reset, Cache, Dalvik Cache. (in that order)
I don't know that the order matters, it's just my way of doing it, and I've never had any problems.

Thanks for your quick response. Gladly appreciate it! But there's also an option in the wipe menu to wipe "system". In the wipe menu, there's: cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, battery stats, rotation, system. I wiped cache, dalvik and battery, anything else I neeed to wipe before I install a custom rom? In clockwork recovery, all I used to do is wipe data, cache and dalvik.

Yes, when flashing a fresh ROM wipe EVERYTHING, including system. I usually wipe a few times just to make sure I'm starting fresh. I haven't used this super wipe but you can also check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700211
Edit: I don't usually worry with wiping battery stats or rotation

Thank you. I wiped everything and performed a factory reset.
You don't need to wipe system. Any decent rom out there will wipe the system for you before the rom flashes.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the factory reset wipes system anyway.
No factory reset does not wipe system. Also do not use super wipe zips. They are bad for you

Factory reset wipes the data partition. It does the same thing as the factory reset within the phone settings. If you wipe system, it completely wipes out the OS, and there will be nothing to boot. Of course you can still get back to recovery. When you flash a rom, by default it should wipe the system for you and replace the system with the rom you are flashing. There may be a case where you are flashing an incremental upgrade, which will not wipe the system.
The reason you do a factory reset (data wipe) when flashing between roms is because settings and other stuff that was saved on the data partition may not be compatible with the rom and cause issues.

Based on what?
Based on what developers have said. Super wipe originated from a CWM issue back on the EVO 4G and people never seemed to of forgotten.

The issue was with cwm not superwipe. The superwipe created for this device works fine.
the issue was with cwm, the superwipe was made to combat that issue. a good dev will set his rom to wipe system. all a user has to do is factory reset in recovery. Superwipe is a unnecessary step and could be bad for the phone if its corrupted or the person who made it did it wrong.
really great info, thanks guys!

Yes. A system wipe doesn't affect recovery. It just wipes the system partition on your phone. The recovery partition remains unaffected.

My question about wipe Dalvik cache, wipe cache partition, ect.

Hi everybody, I'm a vietnamese. I never used a android phone before.
I see in StreakMod recovery:
+ Wipe Dalvik cache.
+ Wipe Cache partition.
+ Fix permissions.
+ Wipe data/Factory reset (not sure)
I usually do it (in order) whenever i flash a recovery or install a rom. But i don't know:
1. Must I do that?
2. When should I do that, after or before finishing a "factory reset"?
3. After I do a "factory reset", must I do it again?
Sorry about my bad English.

Usually if you are installing a custom ROM it will tell you whether or not you need to do a wipe of the Dalvik cache. Always Factory reset before installing a new ROM unless otherwise noted. Wiping the Cache and/or a factory reset after installing a ROM can usually fix most FC issues and issues adding accounts on a Streak
