First off, sorry if this is in the wrong place. I have a HTC Hero S that I just got the other day. I rooted it over the weekend and noticed that when I go to change the volume of my ringer or to put it on silence it won't show it. I can hear the chimes and the icon in the notification bar tells me if it is silent/vibrate/or ring but the volume bar or whatever it is called will not show up. How do I get that back? Thanks for any input.

So I understand that in ICS these are both bound by the system. So in that case when adjusting the volume with the side buttons shouldn't that not only adjust your ringer volume but the notification volume as well?
You are correct the notification and ringer volumes have been merged, now one in the same. I have an application called Audio Control which will give you separate notification and ringer volumes which can be found here:

The only app that can successfully unlink the ringer and notification volumes in ICS was made by a Dev here at XDA. the app is called ICS Enhanced Ringer Control. There is a trial version which lasts for 48 hrs that you can try out on the Market. The full version can be found here:

This is my first Samsung phone. Every other Android phone I've had in the past had this option. I'm I just missing the setting somewhere or does it just not exist on Samsung phones?
