[24 Jun][WIP][MAGLDR] Debian for HTC HD2 - v0.1 alpha - HD2 Ubuntu Development

Gentlemen,
Lately I have found myself experimenting with Debian on my beloved Leo. It's very much WIP, but even right now it may be fun to play around for some. And most of the stuff that *doesn't* work, well, solutions are in the line of sight.
I won't have time to finish it anytime soon. So, partly in hope someone will join the effort, and partly to simply make sure I won't lose effects of my work in the darkest corners of my hard drive, I upload it as it is.
It's very much bare-bones Debian Unstable system. To install it, copy all three unpacked files (rootfs.ext4, zImage, initrd.gz) to "debian" directory on your SD card. Then, choose this directory in MAGLDR settings. Then boot from SD.
It boots directly into the desktop and allows you to connect to wifi and launch terminal (and install any software you want using apt-get/aptitude).

(mirrors appreciated)
Features:
*Touchscreen, UI works perfectly fine
*Wifi works perfectly fine too
*Sound kinda works (playback is too fast for me, please test)
*It's full Debian GNU/Linux - 15901141666 packages to apt-get!
Various technical info:
*Kernel based on linux_on_wince_htc from gitorious with some modifications:
-applied USB host patch by liiochen
-applied patch from tytung kernel that enables ALSA driver to be compiled as module (without that it wouldn't work at all)
-custom defconfig
*Rootfs size is 1GB. Filesystem is ext4 (to avoid data corruption).
*Window manager is E17, it's optimized for phones, very beautiful, and very impressive overall. Network manager is Wicd.
*Also installed: Xterm, SSH server.
*Default username is "htcleo". Default password for this account is "htcleo". Default root password is..."htcleo".
*As it is Debian Unstable, anything can break at any time and not much can be done about it. I also recommend using aptitude over apt-get (it is better at solving dependency problems).
Important To-Do:
*Phone functionality & suspend/resume (all of this should be supported! sadly, fso-deviced in Debian repositories is currently broken)
*Landscape mode (easy)
*Hardware buttons (easy)
*Bluetooth (at least partial support should be easy)
*??? to be continued
Wish-list (the less important stuff):
*Switch to armhf for performance gains (should be easy)
*At least partial hardware acceleration (should be possible thanks to xf86-video-msm driver)
*Bully someone into cooking newer kernel (2.6.32 is old)
*If the above doesn't work, backport brcmfmac wifi driver to current kernel
*Compass, GPS, camera, multitouch (aka the stuff not many really care about)
*??? to be continued
If you want to help me in the effort to make this port work perfectly, take a look at this:
http://www.multiupload.nl/BXNBMMECH0
It's a package with everything you need to reconstruct my rootfs on your own. There are some files and there is a dirty bash script ("createrootfs") that does everything that has to be done. Instructions are inside of it.
There is a lot of valuable information on htc-linux wiki (http://htc-linux.org). I'm available in this topic, on pm, and on #htc-linux freenode channel.
Big thanks to #htc-linux, Cotulla, liiochen, tytung, dcordes, many others I forgot about and will add later.
[EDIT 16.09.12]
Some people requested kernel sources, here they are:
http://www.multiupload.nl/IWL07GL78D
MD5: c698454af38ad7ed3dbec120eae84daa
Clever ones will notice ".git" subdirectory. There's full history and anyone's more than welcome to upload it onto github/gitorious/similar.
Please refer to this htc-linux wiki page for compiling: http://htc-linux.org/wiki/index.php?title=QuickDeveloperStartGuide#Kernel . Use htcleo-gnu_defconfig (it's in arch/arm/configs/ directory).

I would appreciate someone testing USB host functionality. It should work (proper patches were applied), but I don't have cables to check it out myself.

Won't load from magldr-stop on " 123fatal hit 3 "

USB host works, keyboard and mouse. Connected to wifi ok. But when I tried to take a screenshot, it just hung and had to press soft reset button. Will test more.
Excellent work bardzusny, BTW there are Ladies on this forum too
@ivicabrus, be sure to unzip the .tar.gz, the .tar and also the rootfs.zip

There is no link on the download page.
Must register on this site to be able to see the download link?
Sorry, is the first time I come across this download site.
Thanks.

I did some test on this build and performance is much better than ubu. Ui is very smooth and keybord is good as for smartphone. Tried to test sound but clicking mplayer does not give result. Wifi works but sometimes needs system restart to connect. Dont try screenshot option (just like above). Good work!

[APP][02/26] Nook Color USB Mass Storage utility - Mount any partition to your PC

I've compiled a simple app to be able to easily mount to your PC any given partition.
Feel free to donate if this app is of any use to you. Much appreciated.
Please note that changes to the drive will not be saved if you do not properly unmount/eject the drive from PC (in Ubuntu: right click, unmount. In Windows, eject.).
For those using stock browser, apk files often fail to download.. You can install Astro explorer and activate downloads in settings (last option). Then you should be able to download this file.
Dolphin should work without issues..
This is a Beta release.
This requires a working root (su). By that I mean your nook must be rooted. Regarding HC, see j4mm3r's thread.
This can be used, for example, to open your SD or internal data on your PC..
You can mount pretty much any partition to your computer with this app:
- SD
- Media (internal drive for your media and documents...)
- SD Partitions (up to 4)
- Internal storage - BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS!!
There are two "mount points" on the nook (lun0 and lun1)
So you can simultanously mount two partitons.
As an example, you can mount SD on 1st and MEDIA on the 2nd.
Each mount point has it's own tab.
Please try it out and post feedback.
Thank you.
EDIT (13.02.2011):
This has been tested on HoneyComb and Froyo (not in Eclair 1.0>1.1).
In Froyo: USB Mass Storage (Notification bar) should be turned off.
Compatibility mode will need to be disabled in Spare parts (reboot required).
If this doesn't work for you, try entering manually in ADB while NC plugged in to your PC:
Code:
adb shell
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
And post result here.
Sam
----------------
UPDATES:
13-02-2011: 0.2b => minor bugs and made app scrollable for Froyo Landscape
26-02-2011: 0.3b:
- Changed 'settings' label (mistake) to system.
- Added a "Make sure you properly unmount/eject drive from PC when finished" message when mounting.
- Added dual boot system and data (p9 and p10).
- Changed 'Confirm mounting' to 'Confirm', as poster suggested. Thanks.
--------------
Hmm can't quite seen to get it to work right. The app does nothing for me when I select a partition to mount. I can get the SD card mounted via android's USB connected notification. I've tried the app with it turned on and off. It's got super user, so that's not it. By the way, I'm running Froyo 6.7 off the eMMC. Let me know what to try.
EDIT: Got it to work after running the ADB command in 1st post. Awesome app, thanks.
Sam,
Thank You, you program made my day. It works great, I have been messing with vold.fstab for days and I could only mount the boot of my sdcard. So, I went with manually pushing file to /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/luno/file which worked but your app make the process much better.
Again Thank you for everything you have done.
Biz
Could this work as a Xbox media storage? I want to get a new demo, and I got no Hard Drive
Works great!
this is great! i was thinking (since your help in the other thread) about trying to cobble something like this together myself in android app creator suite but didnt know if i could manage or not. Now i dont need to even try! thank!
EDIT: 2 things, one, is it possible to have this setting survive a reboot? and secondly, is the display supposed to be tiny? it only fills like a third of the screen and is centered at the top. this is on emmc froyo 0.6.7 the screen is scrollable as you said so just have to scroll down for the confirmed button
Does it unmount them on the nook when they are attached to the PC? I was playing with the echo command and it seems that the nook is unable to see any changes to the filesystem. I wrote a script that unmount them then runs the echo statement. Then another script that remount them once they are disconnected.
Good question. As I said, this is beta. I'm open to any suggestion. From what I tested, changes did actually occur even when mounted on android..
Unchecked compatibility mode in spare parts and reboot for fullscreen..

This provided an easier way to fix root (SU binary) to make SuperUser work again on HC.
Glad it helped.

Interesting. I did see that if you try to download / install directly from the HC browser it doesn't work. Perhaps people do this instead of trying with their computer and assume it doesn't work? Downloads don't equal successful installs.
For Windows users, it (currently) provides the only way to mount the 4th partition of my HC SD card. Am I mistaken? Perhaps others don't realize what this is or are put off by the UI?
Keep it up. This is a much needed utility ATM.
The UI isn't THAT awful, is it?
Anyway, this can help a lot of people, especially the ones not too familiar with ADB..

To a person familar with partitions and the android file system it's fine. To those expecting a more fruity / friendly UI, it's far from it. However, you can't please everyone and it might be a waste of your energy to try. It's practical / functional and that's all I need it to be.
Indeed it can, much preferred over ADB even though I can use it just fine. You might want to make it more clear in the OP that users that have problems may need to type "adb shell" before the echo command. Not everyone will know this.
You app works well Sam! I can finally access my media partition via USB. I am looking forward to updates. Perhaps retaining setting after a reboot? Great work man!
Works great! I downloaded it with dolphin browser (running froyo on emmc) Then used root explorer to navigate to downloads and just clicked to install. Doesn't get any easier than that!
Would it be possible to have it mount media partitions? Like if I have dual boot setup would it be possible to mount the extra partitions to edit them?
Which media partitions?
Right, forgot about dual booters.. I'll implement that in 0.3..
Thanks.

I want to thank you so much for this samuelhalff. I mean it. Something like this that may seem trivial to someone who can just do it means a WORLD to someone like me and i truly truly appreciate it. The devs/peeps here have made my little wanna be ereader ((hehe)) a great honeycomb tablet. I think its great for someone that cant afford the next great thing **xoom** to be able to join in the tech fun. You all have made me very happy with my little tablet.
Jamie.
Love the app!!!! but i got a issue now... There is no way for me to browse the media partition on the device... so I can not access my pictures that I placed on the internal storage...any insight?
Working great for me, HC on eMMC. Appreciate it!

We have root, google now and data working (data for magldr users only ATM, haret users can try changing kernel, but may lose root). Note that install folder is called jelly. For browser, try chrome or other browser from this list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28841137&postcount=70

Pre-alpha versions 1&2 and alpha 3,4&5 softkeys
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29034218&postcount=166
Put system and meta-inf into /sdcard/ics-or-jellyb/root folder and reboot
As far as I can see it adds 2 lines to /system/build.prop
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
qemu.sf.lcd_ density=110
Not sure why lcd density is put to 110, it has no effect on actual lcd density.
Anyway, delete these lines to remove softkeys and before rebooting, make sure your root folder is empty, else it will re-install (yes, it happened to me)
You may find the some screens slightly messed up with softkeys added.
No soft power key yet. Try Quick Boot from market and add power off widget to homescreen, thanks liuhung.
Pre-alpha version 1 only
Softkeys can be got from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28874557&postcount=92
Put system and meta-inf into /sdcard/jellyb/root folder and reboot
To remove, use the attached instead (it has original .apk)
For magldr users, a way to change ro_lcd_density in /system/build.prop without root permissions was found by vikingzou here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28292160&postcount=614 genius.

the folder is named differently anyway. you can keep your existing build in ics folder, as long as you have space on sd card. It isn't laggy.

Seems good for now, not much time to play with it, but is solid.
Will probably go to magldr again soon when Ansar releases new WP7 ROM

Have you read the latest developments regarding Artemis? The new version will be equipped with Microsoft Windows Embedded Mobile, so not WinMO 6.5.5 anymore. This means that the startup screen also changes to that! Great new developments are coming to us and our HD2!!!
Keep track of this my dear friend!!
It's about the same impact as JB versus ICS!!

Note: I compiled this rom for myself but figured sharing won't hurt, and hence I don't plan to provide much support though I'll see what i can if you find a bug.
What is the difference between this and the nightly ?
All libraries and native code is compiled in ARM mode (except for libwebkit which is still in thumb mode due to it's excessive size) and compiler side optimization is turned on (again, exception being libwebkit using -Os and sqllite using -fno-fast-math).
Important function calls and syscalls are aligned for faster response time.
I re-implemented some of the cpu atomic functions based on what I've learned so far, swp is used for atomic swap instead of ldrex/strex, register swapping of old value is done at success so if a context switch does occur, the loop will be aligned at the same boundary as the function. On best case, there shouldn't be any difference but can improve execution time for worst case of context switches.
Java libraries and bionic libc are compiled with NDEBUG, and the debug variable for java is also set to false.
Most crap (stuff that "I" do not use, has been removed ie. VPN, live wallpaper support etc..)
Fixed a few memory leaks in bionic, dalvik and ppp (also tether).
I've removed most locales except en_US and en_GB, though android still seems to be compiling strings from other languages in the build, so they might work but i can't guarantee anything with locales other than en_(US|GB). Arabic patch
Reverted the patch which auto closed notification bar when all notifications are canceled/removed. It was irritating me..
more stuff i don't remember.
For now the kernel is tytungs-r1 ics kernel patched for gingerbread, though I will be patching/updating and working on the cmhtcleo kernel once i have the build known to be bug free after some time.

Is it possible to run SD build from CLK? Just dont wanna install MAGLDR again, it`s so terrible for compability with Linux
Just get new micro sd card from SanDisk, its class 10, 95 mb per second -- its the most speediest micro sd in the world (micro SDHC UHS-I Card: Extreme Pro 8 GB)
Update: I`ve installed this rom twice with custom size about 4096 but everytime ive got near 512 mb. WHY?

Because you're not setting proper command line, if you're booting from magldr, you just can't do this. If you're booting from clk, while creating boot image, set the cmdline exactly as in startup.txt and modify the partition size then flash that to a secondary boot partition, now just boot on secondary boot partition for the SD rom. I think suspend wasn't working properly with clk on sd roms, have to see why.
If it's from haret (unlikely) just edit size in startup.txt
@wis, thanks for the port, might use it sometime in the future when i try the new WP builds
Thanks Rick_1995 and Learning Never Ends team for this GREAT ROM!
I tried to change the LCD density in the system.ext4/build.prob. 192 is shown if i open the /system/build.prob in root explorer but this doesnt effect the rom... What can i do to set it to 192?
Thanks Wis (although I think you should be concentrating on something outside xda!).
Any advice on how to get option for "Corporate" Accounts?
This could be my favourite
Cheers

Hmm... I may be wrong here, but from my understanding...
The NativeSD method writes to partitions on an SDCard...
SuperRAM ROMS mount to RAM which is faster than both NAND and SDCard...
So I would assume by modifying this to use NativeSD would be more detrimental than good?
yep, RAM is faster but, for my needs, more free RAM better than overall speed and this rom\Android build eats as little RAM as possible, so its just great rom which perfactly fits for my needs but NativeSD gives me internal storage (up to 32 gigs from 512 mb) and it can be launched from CLK loader.

For your internal storage needs (NativeSD's "internal" storage is determined by your ext partition size, you still require fat partition with nativesd, so, unless you have a 64gb card working with your hd2, you likely wouldn't have 32gigs "internal") you can resize your data.img file to whatever size you like. You can use the tool "Toporesize" I believe it's called, or something like that. Also, you can investigate other scripts to install such as Apps2sd.
Other than that, the only thing to tell you is that as of right now, from my understanding, the NativeSD method requires certain kernel mods apparently, which means it's limited to ics/jb builds for now.
Version V2 please!This is great, thanks:good:

Ok, thanks, I`ll try expand my storage with "Toporesize" then.
Update: after some researching ive managed to have 4 gigs of storage even without toporesize - with MAGLDR startup.txt config of 4096 gb does nothig for me earlier, but with sboot + CLK it works great! My problem is solved, yay!
Update2: aaand... after 1 reboot the rom just doesnt boot at all ... ill try to install one more time then.
Barebone CM7 V2 SRAM
Barebone CM7 V2 SRAM is now on post 1:good:
So, every time when i make a reboot or shut down from working rom, the data.ext4 clean itself to 0 bytes. I use CLK + sboot \ sboot tools, 4096 mb automatic generated data file. Any ideas?

This is so great project but why not releasing NativeSD version? Such minimal ROM would act routinely writing on SD much less than Paranoid or AOKP so it seems ideal SD-born! This way we could have fast SD Android for regular use dual booted with WM like Artemis (which is still maintained) thus yielding the fastest and the most versatile smartphone of the world!

It will be possible with 2.6.29 kernel i think.
ATM on A70S2 - Gen9 kernel 2.6.35-7:
-TS working
-3D working
-Soft button activated on my tab (to see on others tabs)
Not working:
-sound (don't know why atm)
-BT (just have to configure init.rc)
-Wifi (recompile all with Wlan option, must work after)
-looooots of thing that i have not tested.
Another thing, Kitkat must have system in a different partition, you will have to install 3 image files in the sdcard (root of system, system and data).
I think that i will use directly the internal sdcard partition and write partitions directly on the sdcard (like a real partition, not an image -> better perf ). BUT a wipe of the sdcard is necessary (one time).

Hi biz,
I think that with the first test would be not so bad if the installation only with
3 image file would take place (simpler installation).
If the new system has then beta status could one then the partition
on the internal SD card drove through .
Are already curious on the new system

Now. The main PB is the wifi hal. Because wpa supplicant v0.6 and wl1271 driver has been deleted from the code source of Android. I try to compile it for 2.6.35 (more easy because drivers are updated).

I don't know
But it will be more easy to fix than with CM9 (first experience in android compilation for remember )
FYI:
I had few time to try the new image that i have compiled.
It's compiled with CM options (wasn't the case in CM9). Bootlogo is CM, themes doesn't crashed, but it lakes a little thing to fix.
I will try to fix wifi this week end if i have more times to dev.
I progress about it, ATM i try with 2.6.35 (only for A70S2), and i hope that it will worked with 2.6.29 (for all others tabs), mac80211 module is included into this kernel, but maybe the driver cannot be compatible

Yes and no, i work on it when i have times.
I try to find any ways to have a working wifi. I use CM11 wifi drivers but i cannot use it correctly (myukernel or CM11 is not configured properly).
When i have a working wifi i will upload an alpha release.
For screen and navigation button, i think that there will have no pb with it. The managment about this is very different.
To fix:
-Wifi
-external/internal sdcard not seen
-OMX codecs
-Sound HAL
-BT
-ALL
