[Q] No root access after root Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello today i desided to root my Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100
I checked my kernel version which is XWLPG
Then i found in insecure kernel that should fit on this forum.
After that i took my phone enabled usb debugging.
Then i turned off my phone and started it in downloading mode.
(Volume down, Home and Power)
Then i started odin and flashed the kernel to my phone.
After that i ran S2 Root program.
Then i pressed root and everything seemed to work fine.
After reboot i got the yellow triangle and thought everything were fine.
But it proved me wrong, i tried using luckypatcher to remove some ads on a app i have, but it didnt have root access wierd
So i downloaded titanium backup from play store,
and same thing here it showed me and error that it didn't have root access.
I restarted my phone serveral times and i didnt help at all.
Then i tried doing it all over again and its THE SAME.
No matter what i do it seems that i can get my phone rooted probadly.
I can see superuser is installed but i cant find CWM.
Is there anything i can do.. ?
Ps. If you need more information just ask, i tried to be as descriping is i could be after all i am a noob and im not special, but i couldn't find anything after a search

hi
which insecure kernel u used?
and is there any superuser app in your phone?
if its not there install superuser from market and try
or else flash ch-kernel first then flash other kernels

Try flashing the insecure kernel again. Sounds like Busybox didn't get installed at all or/properly. If you used something other than a CFRoot kernel, I recommend you do this time.

This is the kernel i used if that can help you Kernel_I9100XWLPG_INSECURE
I have tried flashing it again with no luck
There is a superuser app but it dont seem to work at all..
I will try the cf now and reply back asap..
It that the same method as i already done.. ?

I don't know. Which thread did you get it from ?

i got it from this thread.

In the forum link that you guys posted i cant find the Cf kernel for
XWLPG
Is this the right one.. ? CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_LPG-v5.5-CWM5

Before you do anything, read the first page of the CFRoot thread thoroughly. Make sure you understand the process. And pay particular attention to the bit in bold red about a 3rd of the way down the page that says "Help ! Which file do I use ?".
That section answers the question you just asked.

You have been a big help to me..

No probs ;-) If you have any more problems, post to this thread again & include info about exactly what you did & what is/isn't working so we can get it sorted for you. But hopefully CFRoot works for you first go.

i will do that.. thank you again very much..
Its really apreciated..
I will try the Cf..
But actually a question already has come up..
the kernel version i found is a zImage and not a tar and odin dont seem to recognize it
EDIT: Sorry my bad i accidently unpacked it twice.. What a noob

Yeah you don't need to unpack the tar. Looks like you got that sorted tho ;-) Let us know how you get on.

I have to be very unlucky today, the new one seems to work but now i cant connect to my wifi..
EDIT: It dont work still no root access but it seems that the programs respond better..
Can i start ALL over removing the root and start on completely original firmware..

Yes, you can. Flash a stock rom in Odin. You can either look for your firmware here, Samfirmware.com or you can get the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here), this will enable you to download the latest firmware for your phone model/country/carrier that you'd normally get via OTA update.
Once you're back on stock/have a clean slate you can have another go at rooting your phone if you want.
It's really strange that the kernels seem to be installing OK (your phone seems to work normally) but no root access. As to why that's happening, who knows ?

Yes it really is wierd, because everything do as it should no problem..
But i think maybe the first kernel i put on ****ed everything up but thats just a guess.. So now i will find the official firmware for my phone and then i will try with cf again and report back..

Yeah that's exactly right, and yes, maybe the first kernel messed something up. Yep, back on stock, then have another go with CFRoot & hopefully that works first go this time. Bookmark this thread & post back here & let us know how you go.

hey dude before applying the official firm ware just give a try the below
1) use a kernel cleaning script to clean the kernel then try flashing the Cf root kernel back and check for ROOt if its ok then u can leave there since it saves time
2) if it doesnt wrk that way then u can flash the official firmware and then root again

Too late i already go back to original firmware. And that works like a charm i think i will have another go at cf now.. But thanks for the answer..
Maybe i will try this is its wierd again
EDIT:
It works know, i got back to stock and then i flashed the cf kernel.. And now everything seems to work, i downloaded a root checker and it says that i have root access..
So i think it was the first kernel that messed things up..
Thanks for the help..
especially MistahBungle, you have been a big help to me thank you..

really stuck on rooting my phone !

hey guys,
my phone shipped with android 2.2.1 and i updated it to 2.2.2
now i wanna root it but nothing is working ! z4root restarts the phone but no changes... gingerbreak just keeps in that loading thingie forever (more than an hour) when i restart the phone no changes are made... superoneclick didn't help either... I found somewhere on the forums that i would need to downgrade to 2.2 but i can't find a way to do that because when i start searching for the original firmware for my country i can't find it... so any help ?
waiting for your responses...
well make sure usb debugging is enabled and try once again wth gingerbreak 1.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
install gingerbreak on phn memory ,frmat sd card using http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html
hope it helps,
there are many thread on downgrading just search for it but before that try the above
yeah thanks for your (so quick) answer, but i already activated usb debugging, the sd card was formatted and mounted. tried gingerbreak for like 7 times or something and it's not working...
I tried Gingerbreak once and never looked back. I wonder what happened to your phone.
did you try taking it out to dinner ?

or use this program to get the original firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1073827
i dno why that link doesnt work, it was a program that downloaded the firmware for you. you simply select ur country.
thanks for the reply, that program just downloaded the v10g version which is 2.2.2 (flashing that wouldn't change anything). so now i need to downgrade... but which version should i use ? i can't find the original firmware for my country, and that really sucks (VERY bad service LG). so which original firmware should i get to flash it to my phone using kdz before rooting ?
thanks for your answers and time...
no replies ? come on ! which one should i choose ? no difference between them? please answer you know you can't breathe with that stupid stock rom !!

Hmm...I had that issue. It can/may be solved by any other way. But I recommend to try the one I did. You need to type some commands in ADB, and then try rooting. It's a long process....Read my post in my blog here for details:-http://ayushandroidworld.blogspot.com/2011/11/how-to-root-lg-p500-with-gingerbread.html Note that the post is labeled as "for Gingerbread", but it'll work for you...........

so now i have that "superuser" icon in my drawer, so i need to install a custom recovery... I installed ROM MANAGER from the market, flashed clockworkmod recovery (successfully) but when i select "reboot into recovery" it just hard-resets the phone and it boots again and i find it just like it was when i bought it... even tried shutting down the phone and pressing volume_down + power + menu..... is there something wrong ? please help !
Hello ,You still have clockwork (inside). Try Pull battery ,reinstall, press power,At logo press :HOME-VOL DOWN-POWER for about 5 sec.or untill you get into CW home screen. You can now only use the vol up & down to highlite an option and menu to enter/select the highlited option. If your installing a ROM ,install it (ZIP FILE) on your sdcard 1st (before) so you can select it.
thanks for replies.
I solved the issue... i just installed the rom manager 4.5.0.1 version...Worked as a charm...
Finally, i have cm7 on my phone, gingerbread 2.3.7
now i'm gonna flash the google apps (gapps) cuz it turns out i don't even have a market !

[Q] which way to root

Hi I was just interested in which way is best to root my device and why.
I broke my last galaxy s2 doing it via odin as I was unable to unroot it.
This time I have done it the superoneclick way and unrooted via ginger unroot app.
Yes I'm a noob and someone if any one answer will have a pop about which thread I should've gone to, but looking around for the last hour has shown bugger all.
I could'nt for some reason unroot with odin and am baffled why.
Any help would be appreciated
Regards Shaun
Root using one of the many root kernels.
Unroot by flashing a stock ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Easiest way just flash CF Root via Odin. Job done simples.
Yes, I'm going to have a "quick pop". Initial search of Q&A forum turned up very similar questions, this is where you should have posted instead of creating a new one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=8243020
Answers are above, including the link with guides.
Hi I did this the first time via odin, but was unable to unroot.
I used an insecure kernal and had the original kernal but when I flashed the original kernal back it was still rooted.
So this may be a silly question but why do I need to flash a rom as some people seem to suggest?
Sorry to sound thick ( I am I guess ) but so much info has really baffled me.
I thought you downloaded an insecure kernal and flashed via odin and that was it, rooted, then if you want to unroot you flash the original kernal, use usb jig and job was done.
Or am I way off lol
Again sorry if I am that bad
Regards Shaun
If you flash back stock firmware, busybox and superuser are removed, so you won't have root access. Also stock kernel as part of the package will instal stock recovery.

The actual rooting process changes (adds) things to the system, that's why you need to flash a "clean" one to unroot.
The unsecure kernels only provide the means to perform the root, they don't do the actual root.
Kernels like CF-Root or mine (see sig) do perform the actual root on boot, but as said above, it involves adding things to the original system.
First and foremost, thank you all for your info it is much appreciated and I mean that.
But I am totally lost and still have a screwed of G2 in the drawer.
I have followed advice to the T and some how I am no better off.
I mean what has firmware and roms got to do with rooting or unrooting.
I just want to get to grips with rooting before flashing firmware or at least someone to say what I did wrong.
On my new G2 I did it via superoneclick is that wrong?

Thats usually in most cases not following the relevant instructions .
This method works but if you cannot understand it then leave your phone unrooted and start reading the Guides and FAQS .
Root + CWM .

Basics are choose your kernel flash through Odin phone is now rooted .
Ignore the yellow triangle or just buy a USB recovery jig to remove it .

Just re-flash official firmware from Intratech's thread [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK1/2/5, KL1/2/3, LA2 Download (mentioned in an earlier post).
Follow his instructions exactly, and you shouldn't go wrong
After you've further researched and read, follow the above mentioned rooting methods to the letter. Done

Flash a fresh/clean ROM like suggested in this thread, that should most definitaly fix that phone and get it back to fully working state.
So just before I do this flashing the firmware, just to make sure you understand!
I do the flashing the firmware as if I was flashing the kernal?
Also I'm on 2.3.4 will it stay as that or will I have to use another firmware for that?
Again sorry if I am getting this wrong and thank you for your patience
Get a USB jig.
Flash your stock rom of choice from the intratech thread.
Flash speedmod kernel or whichever you want to gain root.
PS. You shouldn't be flashing anything if you don't know what your doing.....

The intention is to get the phone in a working state, so you can just about flash any official firmware you like. Your Android version will also upgrade if you flash a newer package.
Good reports about XILA2. May have a few Italian apps on it, you may wish to keep them or uninstall later. You may have to flash a seperate CSC later, or just manually enter your APN.
Follow Intratech's instructions and go for it!

Several methods, but if no success, then you are apparently doing something wrong. What methods, and what are you doing, exactly? Easiest method to root is to flash a CF-Root kernel. From what it looks like, you'll need the KJ3 CF-Root kernel.

You can update to ICS any time you want, and you probably should do this first before rooting, unless you want to root twice. (root once for GB, then update to ICS, then root ICS - because you will lose root once you update to ICS anyways)
Looks like you are new here, and have some reading/learning to do to figure some things out.
Start here for stickies with a wealth of information.
Really, there are no short-cuts. Short-cuts lead to missed steps. Missed steps lead to bricked phones.
As ctomgee said. Describe what you have done

the problem is that I cant find a similar kernel of my fone. can i use any other one ?
are you willing to Root first? and searching a CF-root for that?

Ive downloaded it and puted it in sdcard and lunched it from recovery mode but : verification failed. have I to unzip it before copying in fone memory ?
If you can show me how to update it to ICS and root it after it would be so nice.
Thanks for your help.

You have to read read read read There is no substitute for READING for COMPREHENSION
Have you ever used ODIN? if not please learn it first,
the file I sent was for ODIN flash, because your phone is not rooted yet to flash zip from recovery, you have to unzip it to get a TAR file and to put in PDA section of the ODIN.

Odin flashes are in download mode, not recovery. You have a lot more reading to do.
You have the kernel needed from the link posted previously.
1. Unzip the kernel and keep the tar file.
2. Set your phone in download mode by pressing vol down + power button.
3. Run odin and connect your phone to the PC while in download mode.
4. once odin sees your phone, click PDA and link to the tar file
5. Press the magic button and that should do it really.
Here is the link that says it all:

Hi guys! I'm a noob, and I have some questions

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below

What exactly is the EMMC bug?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.
Got the GT-I9100
I got stock 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:
<< 17.04.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 with CWM 6.0.3.1 based recovery >>
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4cb3mf...3.6-signed.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/q642zb...4.93.6.tar.md5
Also I got SuperSU already installed, this means I have to unistall it and do this or can I install this kernel anyway?

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need
http://www.mediafire.com/download/q642zb02je6l1bb/PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSD-OXX-4.93.6.tar.md5
Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Hi once more, and thanks for everything! Well, I managed to lose my fear of trying it and managed to flash it using the instructions from philz tread. Everything went all right!
I live in portugal, and my carrier is vodafone, I think that the build I have is the most updated one.
Really, thanks for helping me with this!

But the EMMC bug doesn't affect any S II phones with JB roms does it?
Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

I'm at work right now, so I can only do it after work. So I just need to, follow the instructions on the NEAT ROM post to flash it? They dont say how to backup your things tough but I searched in this forum and found how to do it-. So I only need to use the cwm to back it up. Does it back up EFS folder too?
You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.

Good work having a real go at it yourself, but honestly, make life easy for yourself & use the guide in the thread stickied near the top of Q&A. You'll have it done in minutes.

that's my problem, that thread dosnt tell me which one i need, or where to get it. i've looked at dozens of guides and cant find one that help me. the only thing that i seem to have a problem with is which one i should use, because i cant find the XWKF4 one.
Because you're running ancient GB firmware, update your firmware to ICS or JB first, then root. Instructions/links in that same thread.

that tool said that i dont have permission, which means its not rooted? why do i need a rooted device to root it? or im missing something? i did every step on that too...
edit: i had old version. but cant find new one (4.0.3) for SGS2, only xperia
I cant remember if Spockys tool needs to be used with rooted ICS or higher.
But if your planning on doing other things with your phone, youd be better starting off where Mistahbungle said(ICS).
Then you just root that and unlock. You read about using pc odin and get the ICS rom from sammobile. Then just flash a rooted siyah kernel,or something similar.
