What phone did you come from? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Just wondering what phone everybody came to the S3 from? There seems to be a lot of people from the Epic 4G.
If you came from the touch, what made you switch? I find it very similar.

OG Epic. I've never gotten a phone on release day tho, kinda weird.

Motorola Photon. It wasn't a very nice phone and had a lack of Devs and Themers. Learned how to theme because of that phone, so I have to give it some respect.

I just came from a Sanyo Katana eclipse...but that was technically a temp phone. Before I use to have an HTC Evolution Shift. Its a great transition from a small screen!

Im coming from the epic 4g touch this phone is faster, smoother and has a better display and damn do I love that physical home buttom. It makes the phone look soo nice! Especially in the marble white version. Spec wise they are pretty close but I have to say this phone blows the e4gt away looks wise. Had an upgrade so I figured why not get the latest and greatest..

OG Epic 4G.
After what our devs did with ICS over there, I can't wait to see what they do with a device that officially supports it, and collaborating with devs coming from other communities. Gonna miss the Epic community, but seems as if a lot of them are on the way or already here.

Funny, that's probably the only thing I don't like about the GS3. I'd prefer they were all capacitive.

Possibly upgrading to evo3d

Well I am very interested in this phone but would like some honest opinions about it here are my questiones. Was the phone what you thought it would be? Is the dual core fast, any lag? and how issue battery life

I love my 3d and it is speedy and all. But to be honest, if i were upgrading now i would get something else. There are better phones out now as tech moves so quickly. Not a bad phone dont get me wrong, just better ones are out there now

I have an Epic 4G, was going with the Touch BUT! I just bought me an Evo 3D from ebay. I think the masses believe in HTC. They are just better built and from what I see here, have more support. Mines in the mail baby, I'll be joining you all here soon.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I really dig the Photon and the SGSII is nice as well. But for me, Sense is where it's at. Plus the Dev support is fantastic and exceeds that of the Sammy and MoPho in my opinion.
I had the opportunity to go Photon or Evo3D. Went Evo3D. No regrets. The community really ha made this phone a beast. Before root, I must admit I missed my Evo4G... Not anymore. 3D is neat, but ultimately a gimmick in my humble opinion. The dial cores are fast. I'm running Eternity on mine and it is buttery smooth. To the battery issue.... I chew through them. SIMPLE and CHEAP solution. Ebay up a set of 3 spare batteries and a battery charger for $20. Cha ching!
E3D'ed... Booyah!

Sarcasm? lol Play w/ it for a good long while and choose from there. I'm still thinking of trading in my Evo 3D for an Epic Touch 4G... but I have heard nothing but problems from peeps on these forums regarding said device. LOS; cheap build quality; software issues after root, etc. BUT I have also heard nothing but good things about the screen/camera/phone's fluidity.
I've played w/ the ET a couple of times... I've never had any issues w/ it at all while handling it and the fact that the phone FEELS so much smoother than the Evo 3D really makes me want to make the switch.
Anyway, the Photon beats them both for phone stability and build quality but the interface is very bogged down/laggy and the dev support is pretty damn scarce.
Make the right decision. :3
I figure the battery is the same as epic touch which is bad so I would go have look for quality and I know the evo3d has some weight to it which is fine with me epic touch looks like its poor quality any thoughts

Really depends on what ur coming from. I mean its a bad ass phone for sure but I think I could have been just as happy sticking with my 4G EVO. I love my 3d don't get me wrong. It's fast and reliable for sure. The 3d feature is cool at first but i don't really find any real use for it. Definately love it but think about this too, LTE phones should be coming out one after another starting next year. Depending on what u got now maybe u should wait and see what's new in the first quarter.

If you've held out on upgrading this long, I'd go ahead and wait for Sprint to start releasing LTE devices next year. That would suck if you upgraded now, right before the end of the year and in 6 months LTE devices come out and Sprint's new LTE network starting to become operational, and you're stuck with a WiMAX phone for 2 years.

The Amaze appears more rounded and sleek than the Sensation and it has lines that probably come a little closer to the MT4G. The SGS II is a rounded rectangular slab. I prefer the looks of the Amaze.

I prefer a heavier phone. Put a well-built phone inside of a case that grips well and it just feels more secure in your hands.
I tested out both phones quite a bit before making my decision a couple weeks ago and ended up purchasing the Amaze. I couldn't stand the resolution on The S2 .....it was terrible, that and didn't care for touchwiz and overall the phone felt cheap.
This phone is definitely heavier, which I love! IMHO looks better built and is faster. I have a buddy with an SgS2 and can't get but 8 download and 2 upload on same newtwork to where I have almost hit 20 a couple times and 8 upload!
Love this phone!
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk
I'm glad to see that you hit 20 on download with the Amaze, because I was a little worried, as I was in a T-Mobile store tonight, comparing the two (I order the Amaze yesterday), and somehow the Amaze had gotten network locked, so I could test it, but the Samsung was hitting 18M down and 3 or 4 up. I was hoping that I had not made the wrong decision on getting the Amaze. The white SG II looks awesome though, very awesome. I'm a fan of the sleek looks, like the IPhone 4/S, not all of the grooves and lumps of some phones, so the SG II looks great to me, http://galaxy-s.t-mobile.com/samsung-galaxy-s2#/gallery .

Galaxy S3. I am looking for something new.
I never thought i'd say this...but my next phone might be a Samsung. lol
I really wish HTC wasn't soooo blind and/or blatantly anti-consumer. It seems like Samsung got everything right with the gs3 while the new line of HTC phones still have quite a few things that I really don't like about them.
I haven't finalized my decision by any means, but as of now, i'm definitely leaning towards the GS3.

new evo ... locked in battery
gs3 for me
The answer would be easy if HTC would listen to the community. But since Samsung makes their devices developer friendly its a hard not to go with them. Even with the screen quality being less than the Evo LTE. The Evo is guaranteed to be locked and I can't stand being restricted. HTC also doesn't give out source code so our devs can't build functioning roms. Thats why I'm leaning Samsung
Coming from the rezound in June. I was happy with the way the one x looked and thought that's what I'd be getting, then the evo let design came out. It kind of bummed me but it's growing on me. The sg3 just doesn't have a good enough design for me. I like the lte's look better. Still wish it looked like the one x though :/. Oh well I still can't wait.

Absolutely. My only beef with the Evo is its size (I have relatively small hands), but Nexus is about the same anyway. Actually had to get a small case for the evo to make it thicker though.
Runs great, very good phone call clarity, display is visible even in the sun (when turned up to 100%). At night on darkest setting it's still not too bright, even as a bedside alarm clock.
Yes, this phone has exceeded my expectations.. its super fast, they have finally made the hardware meet the demands of the software, only downside is that the SGIII comes with 2GB of ram, this would have made the evo even better.. but it hasnt slowed down yet.. i love it
Get this phone. Plain and simple. You won't regret one bit

The Phone is Super!!! Once the LTE is up and running and Google fix the Wallet issue the phone is the best!
There's one thing holding me back from getting the EVO 4G LTE and that's MIUI! I was wondering if anyone has tried the MIUI home launcher yet? I may just get it still I just want something a little more fast than the Ol OG EVO.
They are working on miui search development thread
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using xda premium
I had the original EVO, and I was really hesitant to take the step to LTE but I love it. The screen is just beautiful. Had to get used to the size, but that was an easy adjustment.
There are of course still a few hiccups, but they are excusable. Personally, the changes they made make the phone feel more professional and efficient, which was a big reason I disliked Sense before. You can access quick apps from the homescreen without having to mod; the quicklaunch is super, too. I'm not sure what exactly makes this one so much greater than any other phone currently available, but I've never regretted the decision.

Honestly I hated the first EVO traded it back to sprint for a epic that's when the 2 phones first came out. Then I went to the EVO 3D it was fun but then I switched to the epic 4g touch for about 4 months loved that phone so nice. BUT THEN this came out so I got it and since day 1 I absolutely love this phone omg I will never go back to a galaxy not even the 2gb of ram on the s3 phases me LOL
Sent from my EVO using XDA
I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm leaning toward the Evo over the SGSIII for a few reasons: SGSIII has a home button which I think throws off the design, the color options are not that great, and the use of touch wiz. Although the use of custom roms can remedy the touch wiz issue, it won't resolve the latter. HTC on the other hand, kept it professional looking, has no on screen physical buttons, and uses Sense. If I do get this device, it's getting rooted and romed right out the box.
The phone looks great, the hardware is amazing, but the signal is utter crap.
I've tried stock and multiple ROMs and no matter what I do, I have either a signal <-100 dbm or a data lock. It's insanely frustrating. I also can't get it to actually go into roaming exclusively, whether I use the Roaming options mod here at XDA or the Roam Control app (both used after rooting.)
If you have solid Sprint service in your area, no question that you should give this phone a shot. If you go anywhere that your signal is less than 3 bars, try it out for a few days, see if you'll actually have a signal.

Seeking advice to buy this phone or not

Hello,
I recently switched to tmobile and am looking to buy a phone to use. I've been looking at HTC Sensation, HTC Amaze, and Galaxy S2. I was thinking to go with HTC Amaze, but I ran into many issues discussed on the net. So, here's my question. Should I buy this phone? Are the issues that bad? Or, can they be resolved by simply installing custom ROMs? I'd appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you.
GT
I dealt with all 3 of them. GS2 is a POS. Sensation is has older harder (but better ROM development) and i love my Amaze. Does all I need it to do. You should get an Amaze.
Agreed with hasoon
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda app-developers app
Although I love my Amaze its getting to the point where its becoming outdated and unsupported. I would go another route. IMHO.
Depends what you are looking for...
Pros:
- Decent Specs.
- Nice camera.
- microSD.
Cons:
- Due to HTC and the lack of source ROM dev isn't as plentiful as other phones.
- Issues with the back plate not fitting right and making creaking noises.
- Larger device (thickness).
- Sense (for me at least).
- Horrible backlight bleed from the buttons.
- Lackluster battery life.
If I was to go back in time, I would have picked up a Galaxy Nexus over the Amaze.
I was choosing among those phones too (including the blaze). Chose the amaze because it's screen was way better than Samsung crappy pentile offerings and it had a dedicated camera button. Battery life is pretty mediocre even with an anker extended battery. Battery life is a huge weakness since HTC refuses to release wireless source.
