[Q] help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now (past boot) - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

(sorry to the other thread owner as I didn't realize I was in the i9300 forum when I posted my reply asking for similar help)
*** this is a repost from the post I made on androidcentral, with a suggestion made by dmmarck over there ***
Ok, yes it seems I made a mistake and I'm new to this, so apologies. But I tried going in and changing build.prop (specifically ro.camera.sound.forced=0 to get the camera to go quiet when the phone was set to silent) and when I rewrote the file into the system, I ended up with a phone that won't go past the 'Samsung Galaxy SIII' screen into the Sprint boot. I searched around and found that my SBF might be trashed, but at this point I'm unsure as to how to get it reloaded properly.
I am able to get into the recovery (up volume, home button, power button), and may have made a further mistake by formatting the /system. Unfortunately, I didn't make a backup using that utility until AFTER the build.prop problem, so even though I tried to recover using the recovery I made (after the problem), it is understandably not working.
Am I totally screwed or is there a way to get me back? Any help is greatly appreciated.
// dmmarck and paul627g over on androidcentral think if I can get a good samaritan to help me by posting a nandroid backup of their stock L710 setup, I should be able to recover without issues, would anyone here be able to help me?

Have you tried this?

Yes! Thank you for pointing me there, I found that a little bit ago and tried it a couple of times, unfortunately, the bootloader doesn't seem to be broken, so this didn't help me.
I really wish Samsung had the OEM ROM out!

Just found this!! Someone please tell me this will fix things?? And how do I use the file? (am downloading it now, slow download)

hey now, I appreciate what it takes to get to a fix, but I am in a bit of a pickle with this being my only phone and I am new to Android, so what may be a fix is still an exciting bit of news.
I appreciate that this is not the same as an OEM ROM now (with help from here and from android central), so I'm learning. I also understand that this is a problem that I caused by not doing my basic backups as I would any other software work, so please don't misunderstand and think that I am not understanding of what the timeline realistically will be to get to a fix.

Can't you edit the prop build on your recovery and flash it back?

quite possibly, but the recovery was made from the messed up/non-working version, so I'm not sure if that works or not... any thoughts?

I have a solution for you. Ask someone who has a GS3 to make a nandroid, copy it to your sd card and flash it. Viola you should have everything back to normal.
*warning*
Some might deny your request because certain personal information being stored in a nandroid such as gmail accounts, contacts, passwords, ect.

Yes! Thanks! This is the route that we're moving forward on in the androidcentral forums. We're thinking a FACTORY RESET/CACHE/DALVIK WIPE usin CWM will help to remove personal info as best as possible for any kind soul who does this.

I'm pretty sure someone will help you. I would have if i had a gs3(waiting for local stores to get them). I hope everything go well for you.
Come to think of it, couldn't you just factory reset your phone and it will be stock again?

thanks! actually, I have no way to factory reset unfortunately...

By going into stock recovery mode you can factory reset it. It's the same steps to get into CWM.
And if all else fail, root your phone using the odin method by getting into download mode, you'll have CWM recovery and you can factory reset using that.

hmm, I think I'm missing something because I don't have the factory recovery now that CWM is installed (or am I incorrect here?). And I'm not sure if I can get back to the factory reset options now in the state that I'm in.
As far as the odin method, I am already rooted, I'm not sure how I can use CWM recovery to factory reset at that point..
Apologies again as I am new to android and trying to learn! I appreciate you're help!

Yes, you don't have stock recovery because you're rooted. And if you're able to get into CWM you should be able to get your phone back to normal.
In CWM there's a option to wipe data(factory reset), but wiping data to cure your problem is experimental meaning idk what might happen when/if you do.

Ok, just tried that (wipe data/factory reset), same behavior unfortunately...

How about unrooting ?
Using this method
http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/team-epics-un-root-from-recovery.html?m=1
then going to stock recovery.
Before doing any of this first try using the nandroid somebody might provide for you.

[Q] Please help

Hi guys, I really need help restoring my phone back to working order. I made the dumb mistake of flashing a stock 2.2 kernel while using the bionix 1.3.1 rom. Now my phone is stuck on the team whiskey logo loop. I can not get into recovery using the volume plus power button anymore. It sends me into samsung recovery 2e. How do I go about fixing this problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Hmmm...might use Odin to flash the kernel from the Bionix.zip? I'm guessing you didn't disable lagfix before flashing the stock kernel. Shouldn't be a big deal if that's the case.
Edit: That's of course assuming you can get into Download Mode.
Edit 2: Not sure how easily you can flash only a kernel using Odin. Might try Heimdall if that doesn't work?
Agreed! Whats the kernel you tried to flash? Link maybe? It really shouldnt be any problem maybe it just needed to sit. In either case it sounds like the update.zip should still be there. Try reinstall:update see if that werks. Good luck!
I just realized what exactly I did that caused everything to mess up. I wiped the cache partition which erased my data including the update.zip. Can anyone provide the 3 files I need to return my phone back to stock condition using Odin. I found the thread but the links did not work anymore.

Unfortunately I don't because I used ryan's oneclicklagfix as the method of rooting so I never had the update.zip on my computer. I been looking into restoring it back to factory everything but the links for the baseband, kernels, etc are not working. Do you know any working links?
I believe everything you need should be able to be found in the guide:

Yes you can You can install the root via stock recovery, Just flash the file as an update.zip (You may need to rename it)
Someone else here had the same concern. Think it's somewhere in this mess of threads..
i have the flickering- korean-cwm problem, means i can not use CWM to root my tab. Would a factory reset bring me back the Samsung recovery ?
Edit: even a factory reset is not possible, when i try to do that i have to type my Samsung-account password but it doesnt work, because there is no Samsung account ID.

You dont need cwm to root the tab. Cwm is there to ceate a backup and flash. You however need to unlock the tab and use either the odin method or the cwm method to flash root

Yes, this was the problem
i did indeed a factory reset from the running system, but after reboot everything was the same except the samsung account.
now a managed, thanks to my DSLR, to navigate through the menu of CWM.
The factory reset worked this time. Hoped it would bring HC 3.1 back but after the F-Reset i had 3.2

Also, the reason for him wishing to restore was something to do with the fact his phone calls weren't working. He said he posted on here through this account and got no reply so decided to try and restore it.

You might give some more info on what all you did or what file you were trying to flash....
Sounds like the problem of Gingerbread root on ICS system, or vice-versa. Just redo your work, ensuring you use the appropriate file for your system.
By the way, NEVER tweak your system until you learn to move important stuff to your external sd card or pc.

3E Recovery

I used an app suggestion from the guy that wants to get paid for everything to install TWRP on my ATT i527. It installed just fine and ROM Manger shows TWRP as being my recovery system. Only problem is, ATT blocks the recovery and now I can't get to stock recovery.

Yeah az, I had second thoughts about doing the factory reset. I will just keep the TWRP until someone breaks out the bootloader.
The only reason I wanted the stock recovery was to see what this update is all about. The update d/l'ed fine and was going to install but it need stock recovery....I keep hitting the "unauthorized software has been detected... .turn off your phone and take to nearest store". I don't think being rooted has anything to do with it.
I think that sooner or later our phone will be figured out. But I have to tell you. With being rooted and being able to get rid of some bloatware, and with Nova Launcher, I'm really happy with this big assed phone! Sure, I miss some of the customization, but I hated PA and some of the other overloaded roms.

Maybe you could find stock recovery to reflashing it back... I'm not sure though if stock recovery from i.e. I9205 ROM couldn't brick your phone...
Dparrothead1 I received the update message yesterday but clicked out of it in error. I don't know what its for either. Suppose I'll google it in a few. I tried updating from settings and get an error saying update was interrupted.
