Is there a browser that will have text reflow, like on HTC phones? Please advise! - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a third party browser that resizes text when you zoom? All of my HTC phones do this, and I LOVE this feature! Is this something that has to be in the framework, or is it just coded into the browser apps software on HTC? My Transformer Prime does it also, but only if you double tap after zooming in, which is even better in my opinion. I've always used the stock browser since ICS since it seems to work well, and the only third party browsers I've ever used are Chrome, over screen, and dolphin. I know there's a lot of other browsers out there, but I really don't want to download and try them all to track down this feature, if it even exists in a third party one?

Try Opera...that is what I have always used and I really like it!

It worked with dolphine hd perfectly. You would have loaded a non-mobile page, double tap on any text and it wouldve zoom in and reflow, but that was before i updated to ICS. Now it wont work anymore. Could also be because of the latest dolphine update. I already contact them and got a reply, then i sent them a video of this issue. It reflows the text already on loading the page, zoomed out. You can still zoom in by double tapping, but the scroll wont stick, so you also go left or right if you wanna just scroll down.

Try turning the feature on in the stock browser.

Besides the text flow...the brightness thing that is separate from the system brightness is retarded. On the video player also.

Could you clarify? I looked in Settings...Power Saving...and didn't see an option.
I also looked in the individual apps...and there wasn't a Power Savings menu. Only option to turn on or off the Automatic brightness.
Thanks.

Sorry guys. I should have been more specific.
Text Reflow = with the browser open go to settings>advanced>auto fit pages
Brightness issue = turn off power saving in the notification pull down + then open stock browser, then go to menu>Brightness and colors>Click auto brightness and make sure default is checked.
There is also an option in the display setting of the phone labeled "Auto adust screen tone". It is supposed to help battery life. I have it checked.
Both these issues drove me crazy until I figured out the new settings. Coming from GB, there is a bit of a learning curve.

Hi Guys. I am assuming you figured it out, but the thread was buried quickly so I bumped it just in case.

Does anyone else experience the text reflow issue in dolphine hd browser on ICS as i explained in this thread? I have auto fit pages on. But it doesnt work properly. And the most annoying missing feature is scroll stick. It all previously worked on GB.

Wish I could help Frank. It is working fine for me. Have you tried deleting Dolphin and starting from scratch with it? I have four different browsers on my phone until I settle on one that works for me. Learning a little more each time I try different ones. GB and ICS are very different in appearance and functionality. One step forward, two steps back.
On a separate note...can anyone delete the stock browser bookmarks that were included with the phone? I have also tried to reorder my favorite bookmarks with no luck.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Well this sucks if its only on my phone (galaxy s2).
Yes i reinstalled dolphine, but it still has the problem.
I attached a photo with a loaded page. Notice how the text in the posts is already reflowed? And if i double tap, it zoomes in, regardless of text beeing there... it just zoomes in, in the middle of where i db tapped... ill see where dolphine support gets me.

Reformat text when double-click in browser?

On my old Dell Streak, and my Asus Transformer, I can zoom in on text until it was a comfortable size and double click it. This word wraps the text to the size of the screen.
I can't seem to do this on my beautiful new SGS2 The menu option "Auto fit pages" doesn't appear to work this way (although it is better than nothing)
Is there a way?
If u do search you'll definitely find answer in forum. I use Dolphin HD browser which does it with no probs.

I use Dolphin and it doesn't do it. Neither on any other application. So what's the solution?
On my old HTC it worked on anything I did it on.
I don't think that there's a solution for this (at least in the stock browser that I use), though I'm fine with the 'Auto-fit pages' option on.
What you're asking for is exactly what "Auto-fit pages" is for, and it works perfectly for me. I can only guess that something is different between our devices (branding changes, different FW versions etc..)
Despite being overkill for such a small issue, is trying a different ROM out of the question?
Solved it by enabling Pinch-zoom button. That is the -/+ that shows up in the bottom right of the browser when you touch the screen.
Strangely you have to use this and zooming with your fingers won't work as stated by this thread.

Pinch-to-zoom doesn't do it, but double tapping to zoom in/out does.
Double tapping won't get the zoom you require it will zoom to fit the screen.
Try enabling Pinch in Dolphin browser. It works and is already enabled in stock browser.

Not true. It zooms to suit the "Default zoom" setting.
The first attachment is normal viewing, and the second is after I double-clicked the top left of the article. As you can see, the text is reformatted to fit the screen (not the other way round), and it is more than large enough to read. This is with default zoom set to medium.
I know this is an old thread, but I found it by searching for a solution for this problem as I now have a Note with the same issue, on ICS.
I think it's Samsung’s fault. It worked perfectly on my Galaxy nexus.
however, the good news is that there is a solution.
Download ICS browser+ from Google Play. Its great.

You have to double click twice... First double click = zoom, second double click is text refllow.
After the second double click you can pinch and zoom to any desired level and the text will reflow accordingly :good:

Tried it but it won;t work. I did the automatically text reflow too option too and when I zoom in just past the screen it automatically zooms out.
Even if I do a double tap it automatically zooms out.
Maybe it's my firmware. I'm on stock "I9100XWLPD". Could you or anyone else that got this working let me know which "exact" stock firmware you have so I can give that a try?...

Which exact Stock ROM versions are you guys getting this to work on?...

Yes version 11.1 has zero lag...using currently with thumb keyboard.
This browser works great! No lag at all, and the performance is great.
+1 . speedy typing with opera mobile and thumb keyboard
so, this confirms it's a software problem(no more blue-ish screen and lag in typing mode). Stock and dolphin browser better fix it soon too!

You may be able to extract the Gmail.apk from one of the system dump/ROMs located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1053 then just push it to your /system/app folder
Wow, this browser is blazing fast. Big thumbs up!
(Changed my user-agent to Firefox 5.0.1).
So uh... yes it's fast and smooth but is anyone else getting alot of freeze ups using it? I've had 3 in the last hour while using opera. Tablet will just straight up freeze and I gotta hold the power button to reset.
The one problem I have with this is that when one enters a term in the Google search window, it returns results from Google's mobile search engine, and I can't seem to find any way of fixing this. Really annoying, given that I'm quite sure no one wants the mobile version of anything on a tablet.
EDIT: forgot about this trick - to get around this all one has to do is:
1) go to the standard Google search page (www.google.com)
2) once loaded, long press on the search box on that page; a window will pop up to "add search".
3) just add the search and call it Google, then go to the search window in the browser and select the new Google search engine option you just created.
4) and boom, a nice desktop version of Google search!

Disabling Speed Dial!?!??
...but now my latest issue is trying to disable the stupid Speed Dial page seen at the start of opera. I just want to have a normal home page activated. I did go into about:config and found the default home page entry option, but even though I entered an address and it did save, the browser still goes to Speed Dial at start up. Grrrrr!!

1) typing is indeed much better. no more blue highlights in text boxes which seems to be the cause.
2) text selection is steadier.. the cursor seems to pick the right position more accurately and without the real annoying cursor jumping.
Dislikes
1) when typing this response.. the typing indicator started right in the middle of the reply text box with no way to put it at the top line.
2) font is smaller than stock browser and dolphin HD
3) scrolling is not as smooth as stock browser and dolphin hd
4) loading pages is slower than stock browser and dolphin hd
5) no full screen viewing
6) bookmarks are not as easy to access like dolphin HD
with all that said.. it is such a relief to be able to type without lag and to be able to set the cursor more accurately. I'll stick to opera for now until dolphin or stock gets rid of the lag. opera's small font is really annoying though. anyone have a fix?

yea I've tried to up the min font size under user settings, but didn't make a difference. I've set the scale size higher which did increase the size, but cuts off parts of the page at the right hand side now. I'll keep testing different settings
increased the min font size to 13 which seems to help. tried 14, but it made sites look weird and buttons got cutoff. also, it doesn't seem to apply the new font size to everything. it changed xda, but did a Google search, and the results were still the smaller size.
also more dislikes:
1) tab button doesn't work! example - pressing tab to switch text boxes
2) sometimes texts just disappear since for some reason, it forgets to focus on the text box

[Q] S3 Annoyances

There are several things that annoy me with the S3 that I hope can be solved, either through changing a setting or through installing something. Any help would be really appreciated.
1) The double-tap motion to scroll to the top of a webpage doesnt work for me, regardless of whether my phone cover is on or off. Motion settings and 'tap to top' are both on for me, so thats not the problem.
2) Can I ensure that the address bar is always showing when browsing the internet?
3) Is it possible to open the browser homepage to the bookmarks tab?
4) Is there a quick way to adjust the brightness without having to open up settings > display > brightness?
5) Can I customise the notifications at all?
Some of these points may be quite basic, but considering I am a new Android user, I have yet to find solutions. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for that, but is there anyway to tweak the default browser rather than using another?
One more issue:
6) The keyboard/dictionary doesn't auto-capitalise the new letter of each new sentence. How to solve this?
Tap to top doesn't work for web pages, says right on the device its for contact lists, email lists and email messages.

settings -> language/input -> samsung keyboard settings -> checkbox for auto capitalisation
In my experience, the auto-capitalization doesn't work if you add more than one dot. (eg. "..."), which in my eyes is technically still a new sentence.
Not sure if it bugs with more or less dots, but for me it doesn't work with three...
#4 either make a shortcut to that setting or get a free toggle from the market.
#2 get dolphin browser
No.5, what exactly are you trying to do?
If you want custom sound allerts for different things, no probs. In settings I have my notification sound set as silent, but I then go into the settings of each app (messages, individual gmail accounts, calendar) and set a custom sound in their individual notification settings. If you want more features than that you may need to let us know what exactly you are after? For instance, I use a free version of Calendar Snooze for my calendar notifications and it has a custom sound, reads out the details of the appointment, and brings up a notification screen where I can snooze etc etc. Also auto reminds me if I don't respond to it.
Probably other apps to do things like this for other things too.
I would recommend trying Google Chrome Beta for the browser as well. I like how it syncs your browser with your home computer's browser (assuming you use Chrome).
why is the brightness in videos low even though i ve turned autobrightness off..??
Well, since you're a new Android user, you need to know that you'll find a lot of alternatives for almost all the stock apps, like you browser..
If you don't like you browser, just install another one from Google Play Dolphin and Chrome are very good alternatives.. Stock browsers sucks and lacks of functions!
For brightness you can use apps like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.DisplayBrightness
For notifications, sometimes, every app has it own Notifications config..
2 & 3) definately go Chrome, makes it all better. And I love the feature (which I think the stock doesn't have) where if you have fat finger and hit 3 links at once it will popup a zoomed view saying "Hey fat fingers which one did you try and click?"
I think you could add 7) Not being able to make folder like the STOCK ICS as in click and drag an icon over another to make a folder, I don't know why but this bugs the crap out of me. I know there is other launchers that do this but I like the TW widgets. And how hard could it be for Samsung to do this?? it's a stock feature of the OS haha.
End of Rant...sorry for the semi hi-jack
Jerems
Can you change the brightness on this phone by sliding your finger left or right on the drop down-bar? You may have to pull it down a bit. I do not have this phone, but did this on my previous Samsung phones.

Chrome doesn't have the "text reflow" feature that the stock browser has. The closest you'll get in Chrome is to go to Settings>Accessibility and increase the default text size, which will hopefully help some, at least.

[Q] how to force flash videos to full screen?

Hi,
Im sure most of you will look at it as a stupid question
But im an android noob, so sorry in advance.
My question is this:
When I'm trying to play a flash video on my HTC one internet browser I don't have the option to make it play in full screen.
The best I can do is flip the phone to landscape and try to fit the video to my screen.
Is there anyway to force it to play in full screen or to at least show a button to do so?
Maybe I'm missing some sort of update to be able to this natively?
Thanks in advance.
Press the button that says full screen just like you would on a computer

I don't have that button.
It only shows up on Chrome browser.
But not in the default internet app, nor in Firefox
Any time there's a flash video it should look exactly like it does on the computer so unless you post pictures of what you're talking about I can't really help you

choose HD turn phone on it's side and scroll down a little its full screen now.
I also found in the stock browser you have to enable flash in the settings and it also went full screen with a double tap on the screen
I don't know how it shows on your screen, but even when choosing HD it's still the same.
Native app is even worse, all the touch controls seem corrupt.
Just wanted to add that its been like that since day1.
And that's even after doing a clean flash of 4.3 about 2 weeks ago.
