Wondering how much better it can get? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I'm one to always flash some sort of rom on my droid devices, but after a few days with my new toy...I'm wondering how much better it can get? So far the only thing I'm really missing is tethering....everything else is so damn silky!

My a fancy dialer with some cool colors, can't see much else to make it better. besides losing the bloatware

I would like higher screen density. Wondering if touchwiz will work correctly if this is changed once we get root.

I love it as is, only thing I'm looking to do is get rid of bloatware.

Love the phone. But what I think can improve, based on experiences with improvment in my Captivate, is battery life. I was getting phenomenal battery live on it, using Devil Kernel. And eventually, we'll want to be able to up the CPU speed, and tweak voltages (mainly for battery improvement).

Agreed...battery issues is a must! An oc'd kernel wouldn't be too bad as well...

I've been tethering hotspot using my sgs3. I removed the tetheringmanger.apk and use a widget to toggle on/off. You can setup your own password and ssid with tetheringmanager removed, just can not turn it on/off in settings. I had my tablet connected and surfing web yesterday to test.
p.s.... I am rooted to remove the apk...

First thing I did after rooting was make a nandroid, install Titanium Back up and remove the bloatware.
The couple of days between getting the phone and being able to root and make backups caused me some serious anxiety.
nandroid + Titanium backup = warm fuzzy feeling.

What are you missing most about root?

Forgive me if this topic has already been covered. Simple question though. As root is apparently around the corner, what do you miss that you can't currently do on your 3vo?
For me one of the things is using multi mount sdcard. I use my phone for music in my car and just plugging the usb in is more convenient than having to hit usb storage. Slightly lazy? Yes. But what's technology for? Lol
So what about you guys?

I would always flash my evo all the time. I think the one good thing about root is we can work out the bugs on our own instead of waiting for a release. (evo 4g battery life for example).
Other then that just wireless tethering was handy about once or twice a month. This phone is pretty solid to begin with so I'm not too concerned unless something crazy is released.
That's so true. I love this phone lol. I feel that there are only a few things people could need root for so I'm tying to find new uses that I've never used

i agree, as much as i enjoy having root and flashing roms, im actually quite happy with the phone as is for right now.
The biggest thing I miss is Titanium backup. I liked being able to backup and restore app data. The ad-free app was nice too. I like Sense 3.0 and it's so fast and smooth that it makes me not miss rom flashing...yet.
The only thing I miss is that you can use the volume rocker to skip music tracks while the screen is off. That's it!

SetCPU, kernels & ROMs....
titanium by far.
Rom manager will be another miss when i start flashing roms, but for now i need to restore my apps from my og evo.
No more bloat. Really the biggest reason I root is to get rid of all the stuff i don't want on my phone. That and usually better battery life because of the more efficient kernals.
Remove bloat (although not as big now that you can uninstall several apps) and wireless tether.
AOSP and that's it. Lol.
I want CM7 on this phone so bad!
Only Rom I ever really used on regular Evo.

Same here. Really missing wireless tether. Back to using PDAnet for now but it's a hassle to move between two laptops.
Also annoying that I can't remove useless apps like Amazon MP3.
Everything else I can live with.
First and formost for me is Wireless Tether
After that, titanium backup, and getting rid of a bit of bloatware. I'm digging sense, but, would like CM also.
I miss the development section..
And hate readinf/trolling "what if" and "old news" threads
That's what I miss about root

Yea this is probably the biggest thing on most people's list. I won't be complaining about it though unless it gets to the point where I'm running out of room and we still don't have root yet lol

New ROM out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3edvwIRTL4
Go check it out. I haven't played with it yet, so I don't really know anything about it. But give a shout to QBKING77 for posting a video on how to flash it and giving the info about the ROM.
:O we've been had!
Whatcha mean?
Edit....
Okay, so I've been toying with this ROM for a little while. It works with the 1.2/1.3 OC Kernel so that's a plus, it's got a blue theme, which is also kinda cool. Has an ACS footprint and boot screen until you load the kernel, then that goes away. Runs pretty smooth, seems to be decent.
Pros: Good smooth ROM, Nice blue color, supports OC kernels, comes with wifi tether and spare parts+ and superuser su update fix included.
Cons: Too much sprint bloatware, ran faster benchmarks on homebase, still on 154, doesn't include numbers in battery life bar.
Just my two cents, but you guys should try it out for yourselves and see whatcha think. While the cons are small, they do matter to me, thus my choice to head back to Home Base.

yeah too bad the battery life bar doesnt have the percentage and no 4g on unlocked bootloader.
i get 12-15 mbps on 4g in philly and brooklyn ny, i would hate to lose it so until then ill play the patience game and wait it out!
Yeah, the lack of 4G kills it for some people. I'm in San Diego (No 4G) or Offshore (Where I'm lucky if I get any cell signal depending how far out I am) so it was a no brainer for me.
yeah that sucks to be paying for 4g and not have 4g service -.- it almost makes sprint not worth it compared to other companies that have 4g in your area.
Yeah. But I like their service. Unlimited data. And actually have fair coverage offshore.

i do too, i didn't understand when people complained about their call quality as it is superb in the areas where i go, but maybe because they are in different areas so i cant say anything about that.
i was with tmobile before and it was very ughhh, i would be in my room and i had to shift around to get signal, then switched to verizon which was great service but the prices were sky high for so little perks. then i finally switched to sprint it was great ;D
my first smart phone was from sprint too, i believe it was the motorola q9c, then the palm treo 800w, then touch pro then touch pro2, then samsung epic and now finally the motorola photon ;D
I flashed this ROM and now i get an error when trying to dl apps from the market. "... Could not be downloaded due to an error". I looked online and found the market fix where you clear cashe and data, that didn't work. i also deleted the market update. i really dont want to have to reflash everything. can any one help me out or point me in the right direction?

[Q] would it be ridiculous for me to come back to this phone?

ok, so i have an SGS4G now, and i've had it for about a year now (since when it came out, not exactly sure how long ago that was ) and at the time of my getting it, i had a vibrant. i didn't know much of anything about customizing android phones at the time and randomly one night i was like "i wonder what i can do to hack this thing". so i rooted my vibrant but never installed a rom or kernel cuz as i said, i had no clue what it really was.
but my question is, would it be ridiculous for me to go back to the vibrant? i mean i LOVE my SGS4G, but there is so much more available for the vibrant. and i don't really use my FFC and i'm on wifi for a lot of the day so i don't think only having 3g would be a big issue for me.
thanks for your input.
well if you want to flash custom roms then the vibe is the way to go as it has more development going than the 4g.

I had a SGS4G and I just sold it on eBay because their is just so many more options for this phone. The Roms that the SGS4G does have are great, but their are only like 2 or 3 developer's for that phone (who are awesome by the way). This phone just has so much more to choose from.

I'm due for my upgrade soon, and am finding it very difficult to find a replacement that offers as much. Never mind development, new phones are just not hitting the mark. Either the resolution is piss poor (SGS2), or removable storage is missing (Galaxy Nexus), or there's no removable battery (One S), or no development or support (Blaze 4g) etc.. This phone offered everything when it was released, and now I'm spoiled.
Swyped, not typed, from my Digital Brick
I winder if tmo offers any bonus for waiting to upgrade

I agree 100%. I had a choice between a Nexus S and this and I chose this and never looked back. This is a great phone to learn on but also it is extremely user friendly and now with all the ICS ROMs and many devs coming back on one form or another, it should be a no brainer. Does that extra G really make that much difference?
That's my question really. And I also wonder how the battery life is on the vibrant with custom Roms and kernels and whats the best combo?

You've already got that 1650mah battery from the 4g, and the Epic Touch's 1800mah also fits in the Vibrant, so battery life has gotten pretty good lately. Not to mention ICS ROMs, like AOKP, get very good battery life.

With Passion 13 RC1 and Ice Kiss Kernel 8.2 I was able to charge my phone every two days... amazing battery life... 3g always on! the only issue is that GPS breaks after deep sleep, so if you need that, it might be a pain in the ass..
right now I am using CM9 + SubZero Kernel #70. Battery life is not as good as the mentioned above, but it works very well. And GPS doesn't break after DS, as long as you get a lock once the system starts (first time at boot).

Juice Defender on Evo LTE (wifi dropouts)

Sorry if this has been posted before, but i seem to have found a viable workaround for my constant wifi dropout. I purchased JD Ultimate and configured it such that my 3g connection would remain disabled while i was connected to wifi. Since it manages this automatically it saves the trouble of manually disabling it every time. At any rate, it seems to have worked for me so i figured i would share.
In my opinion something like Juice Defender can damage your phone. But that's my opinion that I felt like sharing.

Definitely don't use Juice Defender. If you have all the updates installed, you should not have these problems.
Of course, a great solution us a custom rom. I am running Rejuvenated Stock 2.2.1 and it is amazing.

Interested to hear why people are recommending not to use it. I have been using both cm10 and meanrom and still experience the wifi/3g bouncing. Definitely don't want to use JD if it is harming my phone in some way but it is the only thing that has worked for my wifi situation.

How does it harm your phone? That just what u think?
All it does is turn off your radios when the display is off. If u get the ultimate version you can limit what apps have internet access. So, how does any of this harm your phone?
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!
Color me stupid but is it just changing the advance setting in WiFi that will fix the problem? Change it from auto connection to 2.4 GHz since many routers are not 5 GHz. Worked for me

I want to say many have experienced issues with the radios afterwards.
I used it briefly last year and couldn't get it to work consistently, it constantly kept the radios off. Uninstalling wasn't enough, it took a full ruu to fix it.

Plain old phone rom?

Has anyone ever thought of making a plain phone rom? The only thing it does is make calls? It would be like 30mb or less rom, insane boot times, underclocked, insane battery life. Might have texting as well. This would be mainly for giggles but might be a fun project for someone to do.

Would be cool to give it a monochrome theme. Make it green with black text like the first LCD sprint phones.
Or have a Nokia style, with signal bars on left, battery bars on right then date and time in center.
Would be a novelty I guess. They have text messaging apps that have this theme. Becomes an eyesore faster than u would think.
