Can't sell paid apps from my country. Should I switch to Windows Phone development? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm new on Java. But I'm good a bit on Linux. So I can develop nice tools for Android like overclock tools, backup restore tools etc.
I want to sell paid apps on market. But my country is not supported by google to selling apps.
Should I wait or switch to Windows Phone development?
How can I be sure if my country will be supported next days?
Really confused.. Waiting for your comments.

I had no coding experience at all, but I wanted to learn Windows Phone app development, so I headed to their website, installed some program on computer and then took some guides on their website, and it was actually pretty easy. There were tools and shortcuts and many guides on Windows website. Also WP is a very simple yet beautiful OS.
Also Windows Phone is rising fast, already 100 000 apps, and looks really, so you could earn a lot.
I suggest you try the Windows Phone development and see for yourself. Though if you don't have a Windows Phone wait til WP8 is released since they can't upgrade WP7 to WP8 and it's always good with the latest.
I don't know where you can see which counties will be supported for Play Store but I'm sure Google has it somewhere. You could try Amazon App Store (coming to EU soon) and sell your apps on there.
Does this mean you can't have ads in your apps too?
I know everyone hates ads but if you put them in the right places they can be really nice to watch more than a pain. Like when the app is buffering/loading there could be ads.
That's all I had to say, thank you for listening.
(after a month of just playing around with no progress at all I quit, but that doesn't belong to here I'm just very lazy and I didn't have any real ideas back then, though after the summer I'm gonna learn coding and then I will make my own WP apps again)

[Q] Is the radar and windows phone for me? First smartphone

Believe it or not, this is my first smartphone due to the fact I am on a family plan and got free service and didn't want to have my own phone bill. I was given the radar as a gift, but I'm not sure it's for me. I have read a little about the windows phone OS, and it does look promising and I like the phone and features.
The problem is that I don't have a lot to spend on apps. I know there are lots of good free apps for android, but I hear this is a growing platform.
Is this a good phone for my first smartphone? I pick up tech very quickly, I just dumped most of my cash into a new pc build for xmas, so I will be pretty broke. I also hear you can't "jailbreak" (or equivalent) windows phone yet.
I'm sure if I got an android I would try the android equivalent (a ROM I suppose). Is that what I need to do to get apps and games on a non-existent budget? It will cost me 50$ for restocking fee, so if windows phone is worth sticking with, I would love to hear any opinions why and how I can get the apps I need (don't need specifics, just know that it can be done easily).
Thanks in advance, I am reading up on windows phone and android, I just would like advice about my particular situation.

It sounds like you're asking fir help in obtaining paid apps for free, which XDA has strict rules prohibiting any discussion, or help in this area. Having said that, most paid apps on Android market have free versions with ads. I'm not a huge fan of Windows phones, but it wouldn't hurt to play around with it for a few days to see if you like it. Because you have no experience with smartphones, the only way you will be able to compare it would be to check out an Android device at a store, or go on youtube and watch a few in depth reviews on other Android devices.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't looking for anyone to tell me where I could get free paid apps, it's more about the freedom to unlock the phone, etc. Free apps would be good too, I just didn't know if windows phone was more pay oriented than android. Didn't mean to break any rules, sorry if it came off like that.I see a bunch of stuff about jailbreaking and roms, so I guess it is a fine line.
I guess what I want to ask is how difficult it is to "unlock" these phones compared to android. I see a post that says this phone doesn't have that option yet, but that is something I would definitely look into, as I love freedom with anything I own. It's more to get rid of DRM and things of that nature than it is to "pirate" anything.
I will give this one a shot, but if it's more pay oriented and "locked down" feeling, android might be better for me.

There is a Chevron Unlock method for Mango. But I would suggest holding off on unlocking it, but for the fact you might return it. As for the paid/free app ratio on windows phone, tge best thing to do is browse that market and see what's out there. Windows phone is definitely cool looking, and has ut's good features, just not good enough to convince me to ditch Android. Albeit I don't know you, I think it's safe to assume you'd prefer Android over Windows phone. Android (imho), is the best thing to happen to cell phones. It has the largest MOD following of any platform, and a ton of fun to use. XDA actually started off as a windows phone forum, but qiickly grew to support Android as well. Android is the future of cell phones. Do I sound like a fanboy or what?

Yeah, I had my eye on android for awhile, I only held out because of the convenience of getting free service and the cost held me back, but it looks I can finally move forward. I do like this phone, and would like to keep it, but if I will get a better long term experience with android, it might be a wise choice to pay the fee and go with that.
But I am still open to any suggestions anyone may have about windows phone, or why I may prefer this platform.
I had an hd2 with android then WP on personally prefer the UI of Wp, but at the mo there is more out there for Android personally I think most apps are gimmicky and the office and SkyDrive integration is worth going with WP alone....
If you want a lot of apps go android, if you want a nice phone/text/camera UI experience stick with the radar
Buy what you can afford. There are a lot of free apps and many have free trials that are simply ad supported. What you'll have to pay for is xbox live games but you wouldnt go to an xbox forum and post about getting free games would you?
Another thing, if you just got the radar chances are you qualify for the free $25 app card. I got mines in the mail
https://windowsphone.promo.eprize.com/redemptionprogram/:b=ie9/
Other than that the Radar is a fabulous phone and I love it!
Thanks man, I did qualify for that! That should help.
Another question about this phone is the navigation. There is an app that wants 10$ a month, and that's a little high.. There's a "local scout" that gives directions in a non turn-by-turn fashion, and that would be fine for me. Is there a way to input an address to this app? It only has a few limited locations. Or do I have to pay 10$ a month or no navigation? Anyone know a reasonably priced alternative to this?

Mobile app revenue

Hi there,
I'm planning to make a windows app. What's the probability of making money on windows app or in other words is there any chance of making money on these app. If so, let me know the process. Making a rental car windows app.
Please respond with any information u have. Till now I didn't get reply for my questions in this forum.
Thx,
Cindy!!
Well, if you are planning on making a paid app, getting profit from it will be a lot harder now. The reasons are:
You can't put it in the Windows Mobile Marketplace since it's closed
Windows Mobile has barely any marketshare now... Maybe Windows Phone 7, iOS, or Android...
Not a lot of people exactly love to go to other websites and tell them their credit card number...
And if you were planning to develop the app in a .Net language, try Windows Phone 7. The marketplace is the fastest growing ever, and you don't need to teach yourself a whole new language...
Anyways, good luck!
Are you referring to Windows 8 apps?
I'm sure there is some sort of a market there right now and the market is only going to grow.
If you have something you can quickly port - I'd recommend getting it in and seeing what the return is.
I believe Microsoft are running a points program now to entice developers to get apps in their store. So for every app you earn a certain amount of points that you can use to buy things like Halo or Windows 8 Pro etc...
(I realize this is an old post, but perhaps this information can help future forum members looking for the same thing.)

Hi Cindy!
Yes, it is possible to make money with a Windows app, whether is it for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8. You can search for "Windows apps case studies" to find others who have made money off the platform [1][2].
The great thing about Windows is that there is less competition than Android and iOS. So, you have the opportunity to own a much larger market share with your app.

Creating applications as side job - possible?

I was wondering if anyone is doing this. I have no experience when it comes to programming (at all) but I'm a quick learner and willing to learn when it comes to extra money
I know there are some tricks like pay $50-100 to some developer to create an app exclusively for you and then you sell it on the market and earn cash from it, but I don't really feel like using someone else work for that. I wanna create my own stuff.
I've noticed that some live wallpapers sell over 100k copies over a year, for about $1, that is about $100.000. Which is A LOT more than what I earn per year. And I believe it doesn't take a long time to create a nice live wallpaper. On top of that you can create a bunch of other stuff and earn even more.
So, I wanna know, how hard is it to learn how to create live wallpapers or smaller games/apps for Android platform? Does it work? Is there anything I should know?
I'm currently in the process of learning Android development (apps, compiling ROMs, etc) and I had absolutely no experience in programming before. I've always been a big computer nerd though, so learning programming came pretty easy to me since I had a good understanding of computers and have been using them since a very young age. (I'm now 18)
If you want to learn how to make apps, there are a lot of resources out there to help you learn to write android apps. Here are some of my bookmarks for android apps -
Android App Development Tutorial
Google - Android Training
Some great youtube tutorials
Also if you get serious about it I highly recommend buying a book called Android How to Program. It's a great book and is really helping me gain a much better understanding of the underlying code that makes an app.
Thanks for the input
I'm still looking for the business point of view, as if this is worth doing as side job/part time job..
well, i am also learning how the things work in the android world, and ive made a few soundboards just for testing. But yea its possible i think everyone can think of an app the other thing is to make it. But it looks like everyone is now in the android business and by the time i actually get good with the software and things there might not be a spot for me

Diving In - Development Suggestions

I have been out of the Windows development scene since Windows Mobile 6.5 and have just picked up a Nokia Lumia 920 and am itching to jump back in with augmenting the app availability. I trolled through the Microsoft WP8 site and am ready to pull the trigger on their dev program.
Before doing that, I wanted to check in here to see how other's foray into this has gone, since WP8 is so new. I have my Windows 8 Pro PC setup with VS 2012 and am in the process of pulling in the SDK.
Any words of wisdom, gotch yas, etc. from folks already down the rabbit hole?

I am sorry I don't have any words of wisdom for you, but if you do find yourself developing apps etc.. I would certainly be willing to show my gratitude with some small donations here and there should I decide to go this route.
Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping to get involved in Windows Phone 8 development myself since the app market seems brimming with opportunity, although I was a bit disappointed that it seems like you have to have windows 8 to use the windows phone 8 SDK (unless there is another version I couldn't find). I'll have to wait until my next pay check before I can purchase a new copy of Windows 8.
In the meantime, has anyone been able to get the tethering option working on a locked off contract at&t phone? I'm using mine with Straight Talk, which allows tethering, but the ROM loaded on my AT&T nokia blocks users from tethering. Is there anyway of bypassing that via hack, or by loading firmware from a different region?

[Q] what free alternatives are there to google play for a new dev?

Ok so i have an app on the windows phone and store that im in the process of converting to android (c# to java has not been too painful yet but i havent started on the ui ....i think that may be were the pain will be!)
my app was not a huge success but then it was aimed at a niche market, and in the 2 months since i published it has only had 230 downloads and not a single donation. so im thinking of adding adverts this time (hate to do that but a lot of time goes into the apps) or making it paid (hmmmmm shudder)
So i was looking at the requirements for google play and saw they want $25 to class me as a developer, i cant see me making $25 on the app and dont want to just throw money away ...hell im a min wage working doing this as a hobby i dont have this money thing they want lol
but then i remembered with android unlike windows phones i have options ! so what app stores do you guys recommend ?
the windows version of the app:
I realise of course choice of market site will be subjective but want to avoid bad ones that may steal my app and sell it on or have a bad reputation etc
