[Q] micro-usb to usb-a female cable - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I just bought my new Galaxy S3 yesterday and have already bought an micro usb to usb a - female cable, because I've seen some videos with usb devices connected over that port.
When I plub in any usb device (usb Stick 8Gb for example) nothing happens.. does this functionality work only with specific cables, like the MHL adapter?

Make sure the USB-Stick is not NTFS-formatted, Stock Samsung firmware can only handle Ext (Linux) and FAT32/exFAT formatted drives.
If you want to use NTFS, you can flash SiyahKernel through Odin (will void your warranty)

I have checked my USB Drive and it is formatted with Fat32, I also tested Mouse and Keyboard and neither one of them worked.
Was thinking about rooting anyways, and for warranty i could unroot and reset the flashcounter right?
are there any disadvantages of the kernel? battery life, unstable etc.?

Yes it is a speacial cable called usb on the go. Got the original Samsung one from Amazon and it works perfectly

double checked everything.. i got the wrong cable.. -.-
i bought an adapter, which seems to not have the OTG function...

this is the one i ordered, doesnt say OTG but works fine:victory:

I just searched ebay for "otg cable" about £2 each and work perfectly

Bought 3 for 3 pound on amazon. Then a mock ps3 controller for 3 too. All work well, Xbox pads work perfect so long as you get USB/bt centre.
Haven't tried a memory stick but I'm sure it would work. Nokia USB micro to usb female work well too.

I just bought one on eBay for $1. Plus free shipping. It says for sgs2 but from what I understand is still compatible with the sgs3. Only the mhl adapter is different. I will try and let you know how this works when I get it.
Edited: Ok, so I got my otg cable yesterday witch came a week early and I have successfully connected my ps3 controller with it. I haven't try anything else with it yet but for a dollar it's great.

My memory card readers aren't detected on my a70it! Why?

I bought the device because it supports usb hosting. I bought the otg adapter and no success. If I can't get this to work ill have to return the device. I'm very disappointed. Any suggestions? Anyone?

I vaguely remember some issues with USB hosting with certain versions of the Archos OS. Which firmware are you using? Have you tried other versions? Is your AOS up to date?
Bye.

I tried my A43 with the USB host cable I bought for it. Some of my USB flash drives worked and some didn't. My SDHC card reader did not work. That USB flash drive that worked so well, only worked right after a reboot.
My A101 with it's true USB host plug works with anything I throw at it.
Not very encouraging.
Bye.
Maximum current from the A70 acting as USB host is ~100mA. I have USB sticks that draw between 100 and 200mA - the low powered ones work, the others don't. The ones that work, work reliably.
For cameras etc I plug the A70 into a small powered USB hub and all seems fine
Yes, it works much better with a powered USB hub. All of my USB flash drives worked as expected. However, my SanDisk MicroMate SDHC card reader did not. The card reader works fine in a PC, so there may be more to it than power.
Bye.

[Q] TP with my 500gb ex hdd

I think this question has been asked before, but I still want to see if someone can answer me. I tried to hook up my 500gb external hard drive to my TP, with OTG cable and a isound portable charger. My hard drive turns on but have no sign say it's connected and can't find under folder explorer. Is it not possible for a hard drive? Also if I buy a Y-cable for usb thumb drive, can I watch movie directly from it? Thank you.
Have you tried StickMount?

Are you on cm7, cm9, or webos?
Also, are you sure the power source is outputting enough juice to fully power the drive?
im using usb host controller (found it somewhere here on xda) and root explorer, works perfectly!
but your hdd must be formated in FAT32, NTFS is not working correct me if im wrong or anything has released wich provides this feature
A bit related these software/methods can work with a camera too?

just ordered one on ebay (only an adapter from normal usb to micro-usb) for 1$.
Along with the otg cable u also need a usb Wye cable...the need is to provide power (plugged into the wall) for the usb hub (which u will also need ). Not Neuf power and the drives will not mount. Getting a solar powered usb hub cuts away the cables and detached u from the wall...I got mine on Amazon for bout 20 $. Totally worth it.

[Q] i777 att phone PLEASE is the OTG option

Hi i brought an otg cable for my phone however when i plug it in the cable is not showing up as usb host on notification bar like some youtube videos that show that. I just want to plug in a small usb flash drive that does not need power to boot up. I can't find a way to make the phone recognize the cable. I running ics by SHOstock v2.2.6. thank you for any help. Also did numerous searches on google and here with no results on getting this thing to work.
Have you tried toggling on/off usb debugging?
My OTG cable works fine. The odds are either your cable is not true USB OTG cable (it must short out one of the PIN at the microUSB connector side) or the custom ROM you are runing does not have USB OTG support. I'm running leaked UCLD3 ROM.
What??? There is an OTG cable? For real?
I got the regular male-microUSB to female-standardUSB cable and it works just fine with AOKP

Yes there is. IIRC, the PIN5 must be shorted to ground on the microUSB port on the cable to trigger the phone into USB host mode. AOKP ROM might be created to ignore suck requirement but that's not how USB OTG works.
Well I brought the cable 2 days ago off eBay and I send an email to the vendor and he's sending me another one I hope it works for me. If not I was planning to buy the official brand name Samsung one on Amazon and I hope it works with that.

Nope. Generic adapters usually don't work. You need a specially made cable with proper PINs shorted.
This is the one I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Thank you so much I'm going to try the second because after noticing the Motorola one on the list didn't work I think fox is right thank you all for all your help.
Do you now of an HDMI adapter that would work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
I don't own any MHL adapter (HDMI adapter). But it should be standard as long as you properly supply power to the adapter externally.
I've had the official Samsung MHL adapter since the phone came out and it still works flawlessly. There pretty cheap now you can find one for about 22$. Or you could try a generic but some people love em some people throw em in the garbage

Some of them are made pretty badly which causes some odd issues.

[Q] (Sprint) USB OTG broken

So I had a USB OTG cable from Motorola, it works on my Xoom, but when I try to use it on my (Sprint) SGSIII, nothing happens. I don't get any "USB Connected" messages, I don't get any prompts to mount anything, and My Files doesn't show any new devices. I've tried the cable with two different flash drives, a camera, a camcorder, and a hard drive. All of them work on the Xoom, but none work on the SGSIII. I am rooted and have a custom recovery, but everything else is stock. I downloaded USB Host Diagnostics, and it says that the phone claims it should work (Kernel, Android API, Rooted API all claim support, but no device detected). I don't know if its that the Motorola cable is unique to the Xoom, or if it is just slightly different on the Xoom such that it doesn't work with Samsung's new connector. I don't have any other OTG hosts to test the cable with. Is there any way, without flashing a new kernel (just got my phone up and running, OTG would be nice but not worth the trouble of reinstalling everything, esp if it isn't going to work), to get the OTG working?
Thanks!
You must use a samsung otg cable duh

That's not true. I have a cable that works with my Sprint SGS3 and I'm sure it's not a samsung cable.
@OP: This is also with the stock kernel so the support is there.
Hmmm, yeah I've been looking everywhere to see what's wrong, but all I get is that it should just work. My guess is either my phone is broken, or the OTG cable I have is just slightly different and the phone doesn't recognize it, but the Xoom does cuz it was made with the Xoom in mind. Can someone suggest a cheap OTG cable that you know works on the SGSIII? Thanks!
i got mine from buy.com for like 4 dollars shipped came from Cali got here in 2 days :highfive:
Had that problem but then I pushed it all the way in until it clicked, thought it was in before but it wasn't it should click when it's in.

Its definitely all the way in, the plastic casing of the cable is flush with the bottom of the phone. No luck =(
Just bought a cheap one from Amazon that qualified for prime 2 day shipping that I ordered along with my SanDisk 64GB card. Worked fine on the thumbdrive drive I tested. It fits in real tight though, I'm going to file down the two tings so it's easier to unplug.

There is no "samsung" or "moto" OTG cable, Its either wired right or not. Micro USB has 5 pins, not 4 like normal USB. The extra pin is what determines if its an OTG cable, a "factory" cable, and so forth and with OTG, that pin is wired to ground. I have a handful of $3 OTG cheapo adapters that work with everything I have thrown at them with my S3 and that includes class complaint, bus powered 5 in 5 out midi interfaces so unless the sprint device is horribly crippled in this regard, I'd say OTG works like a champ on the S3
personally, i bought a few of these: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
just tested them with a whole range of devices (mouse, keyboard, usb drives, an ipod, another s3, a ps3 remote, a dslr) and works flawlessly
It was the Moto cable
So I had to go exchange my S3, there was dust on the camera sensor, and the Moto OTG cable didn't work on the replacement. I got one of the cheap amazon OTG cables, and lo and behold it works now. The Moto one works on the Xoom with no issue, as does the generic one I bought, but only the generic works on the S3. My guess is Moto did something slightly different with their cable, maybe used a pull-down resistor on the sense pin instead of shorting it to ground or just something that causes the S3 not to recognize it.
