Quick S II Questions New Owner - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I'm getting a S II today through Asurion since my Sensation broke and they didn't have any Sensations left so they offered me an HTC Amaze or S II and I took the S II. I am on the T-Mobile network. Anyways to my question as far as rooting can I use the method in this video:
http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-gal...y-s2-sgh-t989/
Also, I can just download gapps and the CM9 nightly and place on SD card and flash through CWM like any other phone right?
Lastly, in anticipation of receiving my S II I've been reading these forums and I noticed that Samsung has included some type of ROM flash counter that counts how many times you flash different FW's/ROMs. Is there any precautions I need to take or anything like that or just flash CM9 like you would flash it on any other phone? Thanks in advance!

FYI, it appears that you already know that the T-mobile USA Galaxy S II is the SGH-T989? Well, that phone has its own forum. This is the forum for the GT-I9100, which is the international version. Firmwares/ROMs and kernels are NOT compatible between the two.

Help please. Boot loop fix no working

My white Galaxy S II got into a boot loop and the bootloop fix thread where I flash a stock ROM isn't working. Is there different firmware for the the white Galaxy S II I don't know about? Please help this is urgent.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Do you actually have an I9100?
Yes a white one. Another question to why I might be doing this wrong. Do I have to flash the matching kernel? and if I need to do that which section do I load that in on odin.

Sorry, but oinkylicious' question is a VERY valid one. Given you are on AT&T, it begs the question: are you SURE you have a GT-I9100?
There are many different models of the Galaxy SII.
The GT-I9100 is the international version (I have one), which happens to work on AT&T's network, but you would have had to buy it internationally, imported it, or bought it through a re-seller.
AT&T sells two different AT&T branded models of Galaxy SII. The HSPA+ version of the Galaxy SII (SGH-I777), and the LTE version of the Galaxy SII (SGH-I727), which is also called the Galaxy SII: Skyrocket.
They are ALL different, and flashing a ROM meant for one of them onto another will usually result in a very expensive paperweight. So if you flashed a ROM from the link you posted above (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278), you very may well have to exchange it or take it to service.
If you take the battery out, what does it say for the model on the sticker underneath?

Then no; white, black, shouldn't make a difference. (as long as it's not a i9100G)
You shouldn't have to flash a kernel on top of the firmware - the firmware will include a kernel. The only reason you would have to flash a kernel on top of the firmware is if you want root, or a custom kernel.
You didn't tick "repartition" or try to include a .pit file, did you?
No I didn't do that

Ok, so what happens now then? Does the phone still bootloop?
How about you break down exactly the steps you are following? Otherwise it's a guessing game on what went wrong.
Alright so I tried to install a Chinese ROM from this link
http://forum.mobileshelp.com/qualco...guage-samsung-galaxy-ii-i9100-guide-here.html
Then I got stuck in a boot loop
Now I've tried flashing some of the stock roms in that thread and I'm still stuck in a boot loop
I open I up Odin and I load up the ROM into the PDA slot and then I click start

By "that thread", do you mean Intratech's thread with all the official firmwares? (This one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) Which one are you choosing?
I've tried the XEU one and a Frankenstein one
If this helps it says something like can't access into [a directory that has system in it] once it enters the screen with the little android once it goes out of download mode
edit2: The problem has been solved. I had to go into recovery and do a wipe.
Big thanks to everyone who helped me out in this thread.

BRICK help

I bricked my Sprint S3 trying to flash Omega. It wont even turn on no matter what i do, and trust me I have tried it all. So I have found a few vids about usb jigs and how to use them. So if im able to get in download mode what should I push thru odin? Was there or is there a .tar somewhere that brings you back to stock?
someone please help.
Anything you find here will be for the international version, and as you know now, won't be compatible with the us versions.
Try the us versions forums and see if anyone has anything that can help.

Chances are you killed that poor Galaxy S III, R.I.P.
Custom ROMs are meant for the International Version of Galaxy S III (GT-I9300) and if Im correct the one from Sprint is a variant.
The only way to have this fixed is to send it for JTag (Forced Download Mode via Hardware manipulation)
u flash rom which is made for international s3 .. I think that's y u brick

Like a champ .
fixboot tar
if you can get into download mode you can flash a tar called fixboot found on the at&t section of the galaxy s3 on this site. It worked for mine when it wouldnt come off of the dreaded download screen with the yellow exclamation triangle on it. Just a thought. it works on the sprint version too.
If you can get a replacement phone though insurance or otherwise.. do that.
otherwise jtag repair from Josh worked but i had no lte coverage.
i am sure he has the updated tools to fix that now. but be carefull out there and learn your phones model number.

Did you make a nandroid backup of the previous rom and can you get in recovery mode?
if yes restore the backup (ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF A WORKING ROM) or reflash the rom ( wipe cache, dalvikcache, data/factory reset and format system in mounts and storage), If you can`t try to get in downloadmode and flash a stock rom and reroot.
You flashed the rom on what model no? That and infact all the roms here are made for i9300
Sounds like you've bricked it.
Make sure the rom you are flashing supports your device model.

Your device was/is i9300 (international) or US model? If your's was a US model than you're one of many who have flashed wrong ROM.

Omega 9 is for the I9300 only. If you can't get it to turn on, you are bricked and therefore there is nothing you can do to fix it.

I really think that the developers should warn in HUGE bright red letters on the FIRST page of every ROM, that THESE are NOT for U.S. versions of the Galaxy S III.
Really getting old seeing people bricking their phones all the time because they can't take 5 minutes to read 1) What section the are in and 2) All of the information before attempting to install ROM's.

I agree. People have to learn to read before doing this stuff. Before I flashed my S2 I read stuff for a month to make sure I knew what I was doing.

I do kind of agree with this but at the same time if you’re silly enough not to read all the info, then you deserve a brick. 9/10 roms state very clearly what the supported devices are.
It's like the fine print on a contract at the bank really.

Most people only go by the Galaxy S III name. This is one of the MAIN reasons why I think that carrier branded phones should have their own unique names.

Can i flash rom with odin and how
He's also asking about what to do on an SPH-D710 in the GT-I9100 forum.
OP, do NOT flash anything from this forum. The device that this forum is for is the GT-I9100, which is a different device than the Sprint Galaxy SII. The GT-I9100 is a GSM phone that doesn't even work on Sprint's network.

You won't find answers here in the I9100 forum.

That might be, but that doesn't change the fact that the device you are working with is an Epic 4G Touch (SPH-D710), and not an I9100. I9100 users will typically not be able to help you, and files in this forum will not get you out of the situation you have created by doing just that; using a file from this forum, on a device that it was not meant for.
You will find many E4GT users have done the same. They were all likewise directed to the correct forum.

[Q] help needed with bricked phone

first of all sorry if this is a repeated thread, very new to this site and no offense intended. please point me in the right direction if this is the case.
phone is very unresponsive with either a battery symbol (with circle inside - frozen) or galaxy s2 load up screen with triangle. I have previously rooted the phone with a litening rom through odin v 1.85. i was running a version of ICS on it and this morning i tried to upgrade to jellybean as a forum on this site had said it was possible. firstly in clockwork mod (holding power, vol up and home button) somewhere through the process of putting the file on the phone (instructions said to carry out the process through the clockwork mod) i have made a grave error. If I was able to get the phone to be recognised by the laptop I would be able to flash another stock kernel through odin to at least get me back functional and worry about tweaking later. Currently the phone won't recognise as a drive to the laptop though. Any advice people? Perhaps a suggestion also of a location of stock kernel for australian samsung galaxy s2 (using the virgin network).

Hi (newb alert)
First of all thanks for all the info - followed the pistacchio thread to regenerate phone, that worked great. however, now once the phone is going again, repeatedly getting an overvoltage error message (did not have before) and the battery dying very quickly. I also cannot access the 3G network, but wifi is fine.
Can you recommend a course of action for this, not sure if i have flashed back to a complete stock rom or not, does that mean that the phone is still rooted? I would like to flash another rom if possible, but am not asking what one to use (have seen the rules of the site Sometimes the battery is even flashing . kernel version is 3.0.15-I9100XXLPH-CL118559 and build number is IML74K.XXLPH.
Any more info needed I am happy to provide. I was really happy with the slim ICS rom and would like to stick with that in the jellybean option if possible.
thanks
Go as stock as possible before going custom again.
See if issues persists.
Make sure you flash the right ROM for your device, noticed you're on I9100 ROM and you've only stated you own an "s II" , so, I cannot recommend any specific ROM because of the variants.
