I've seen other people post that the OS is using 30%-40% along with the screen using up some power but I'm just curious, is there something wrong with my phone if it says 93% of the battery is being used by the OS and only 3% is being used by cell standby when the screen is off?
Sometimes I forget to charge my phone overnight and I see 25%-35% of the battery gone and the main culprit is always displayed as Android OS using 90%+ of the battery life consumed.

Hell no there's no way I'd ever use official builds again after flashing/using custom roms. At this moment I'm using the latest AOKP build along with Siyah Kernel 3.4.3.
Some apps u may use may disguise themselves as android OS. Better Battery Stats could help you determine what's draining it

Alright well I installed the app and let my phone run on it's battery for a couple hours. The app showed that my phone was never in deep sleep. I looked under Partial wakelock/unplugged and it displayed 99.7% was used by *backup* android system. I'm not really sure what that means but regardless my battery life did improve quite substantially after installing the app so thanks!

lol, BetterBatteryStats shouldn't really be improving your battery life, but who am I to judge. Check to see under Settings > Backup & Restore see if the box for "Backup this phone with my Google account" is checked. That could be causing your drain issue.

Right. BBS does nothing on its own; it merely provides information. Seeing better battery life is a result of the random nature of that wakeup. When I had the issue, I don't think I ended up finding a solution. Unchecking Google backup had no effect, but I leave it unchecked nonetheless.
Well I don't know what happened but obviously something must have if I see 30% increase

I am having huge issues with my battery on my galaxy s2. It drains really fast, 60% over the last 15 hours this night when the phone has been idle. This has been an issue for about a week now; I cannot seem to find a solution? I have tried various roms, wiping and doing a clean install, but the problem continues. Currently using lightening rom 3,2.
Do anyone know what can be causing this battery drain? Is the battery defective??

That is quite a drain I can see there. The drain might be caused by having too many widgets or having too many applications open. If you plan to put it on standby, do close those apps that are not important to you.
Have you tried rebooting?
I have a stock lightening rom 3,2. no apps installed, except titanium backup pro and opera mobile. I have frozen all kinds of stuff in titanium to try find the cultprit, but without success. As you see, no apps except andoid OS is running. Same drain on villainrom, lightening. Don't know what can be causing the error. Is there some way to check if the phone or the battery it self is to blame?
Try with screen on - normally I think that should run for 6 hours or so. Using that as a reference, you can check to see if the energy stored in the battery is normal. It doesn't look like your OS is staying overly active to me.

Get the app "battery calibration" from the market and follow instructions and please report back whether you can achieve better performance.

I have a similar issue, as was the same with my captivate. I have stock ROM on my GS2 though, the way I got it out of the box pretty much. Android OS takes up most of the battery usage. I don't know what it is. Widgets updating constantly? The constant syncing from Gmail/push email?
Well that's surprising! Awake and Screen On bar is quite low and totally synchronized, yet 60% drain, now I gotta say it's weird.

Unfortunately, I have the same issue as you've described above. I am running on stock KE2 kernel and the battery drain is quite a lot. The 'Android OS' is always consuming a lot of processor time on standby mode.
This needs to be fixed A.S.A.P.!
Download and install the app BetterBatteryStats from Android section, it is a very useful app which will show what Awaking the device from deep sleep and processes too. For me, it was the damn Latitude stuff going on background and wasn't letting the device to go to deep sleep.

You just look under 'Wakelocks' and you will know what apps are causing the Awake, then you could take further steps.

Would be great if you could look at the screenshot and tell me if something is wrong. Also, after the battery calibration, I've "only" lost 26% the last 7 hours mostly idling. I don't see anything abnormal in the screenshot I provided :/
Well nothing is wrong imo as everything is very low. You should check those which are using more than 10 mins Wakelock, some seconds doesn't matter actually. And you can post any query further to the original thread of this app, here,

OK, So I'm now back to 12% battery usage (from 100% to 88%) with 17 hours and 30 mins on battery, which IMO is normal.
What did I do? Well, I removed the battery and put the rest of the phone into the stove for an hour on 50-60 degreed celsius. My 98% android OS usage is gone and the battery works as normal .I also had problems with the phone constantly going into "car mode" which is now gone.
I got some tips around the internet that my issues were all related to moisture on the inside of the phone.

Download a battery calibration tool off the market and use it, I have had this happen to me before where i would lose over 50% of battery life just by restarting my phone, and it would gradually go back up.
Also check if their are any updates for your rom and os you are running

Probably a pointless exercise since it's been proven you can't "calibrate" the battery in an S2.
I've had something similar happen, I was raping my battery with a torch app then restarted. Before the restart I had about 90%, after it was around 30%.
Could it be a sign of the battery failing? I've not had any real problems otherwise..
Perhaps you have wake locks? Purchase better battery stats or download it using the search button.
A high battery drain is often a limiting factor for a great user experience.
With BetterBatteryStats you can analyse the behavior of your phone, find applications causing the phone to drain battery while it is supposed to be asleep and measure the effect of corrective actions:
- Spot drainers based on detailed information about the root cause
- Use the online Knowledge-Base to find how to reduce or remove the wakelocks
- measure the effect of actions to reduce drain
- detect changes in the awake/sleep profile and quickly find the causes (rogue apps)

We need more information. What apps run? have you remove/freeze bloatware. Are you rooted? what rom are you on?
I'm going to run this based on speculation perhaps side effects of rooting your phone? I know there is no conclusive evidence of this but a hypothesis as such. My apologies if you aren't rooted.

why would rooting your phone create battery drain?
OP the standard answer is to install better battery stats and check it again to see what those wakelocks are. Once you find out why your phone is waking up you can do something about it.

I'm also getting a 10% battery drain over night. I've been putting the phone in airplane mode to see if that helps at all but it really doesn't. Anyway we can inprove this? 10% seems like a lot for sleeping...

GSam Battery Monitor and / or BetterBatteryStats would be the first place as mentioned already.
I was able to find what was causing me most issues. It was some Calender storage and Google syncs (bookmarks, contacts etc) even though I didn't have them activated.
Anyway, after freezing them I now only lose 2-3% overnight. That is with gmail push, email sync every 4 hours and about 7 or 8 other Widgets updating every few hours. Mostly noticed a massive improvement when I flashed the latest siyah kernal.

I don't know but I get the feeling that rooting various phones might have hidden side effects as such, rooting your phone is still evolving as of today. There are still alot that the general doesn't know hence there are always new things about rooting although I might not be knowledgeable in that department. However is it possible to unroot your phone? rather revert it to stock? try doing that and see if there are any differences.
Is there anyway to reduce the amount of battery the Android OS uses? It is currently using 61% of my battery, which is quite a bit much. On my previous phone, the Android OS would only use about 10%. Are there any solutions to fix this? On my other phone I shut off the "Back Up My Data" setting and it solved it, but on this phone, it doesn't help. Any help is much appreciated

It's a BUG.
This fixes it for most people.
Android OS has always been/will be high on this phone with ICS. It's really old news.

This worked well and lowered my OS from the 70% range to 40%-50% range. Still sucks to have it so high.

my wife's is around 30% and her standby time is obnoxiously good. 48+ hrs between charges
There were some funky reporting bugs in ICS on the SGS2... they didn't really hurt battery life though, there. Are you seeing fairly decent life, or not? Can you, for instance, get 18 hours off charger with 3 hours combined screen on/calls? If so it's probably just reporting errors.
I was seeing high numbers like that on stock ICS on the LGOG, but was also getting zero deep sleep. I just went to JB to fix both that bug and fast dormancy problems... not sure if those 2 were related or not, but got them both gone.

I'm not seeing bad battery life. The phone will go 20-30 hours on the battery. I just know that the OS isn't supposed to be that high on the battery usage, so I was just wondering if maybe I'm not getting the battery life I could be getting. Maybe it is just a reporting bug.
That is a well known reporting error with ICS. Android OS isn't really using that percentage of battery.

Today I woke up and the battery was at 26% after unplugging it at around 11:30 pm. I usually wake up with around 93%. The Android OS had used up 91% of the battery for whatever reason -.- I finally installed that fast dormancy thing. Hopefully it helps.
When the phone has higher than normal OS %, it's because of wakelocks that is preventing your phone from going into Deep Sleep State (CPU). Install Better Battery Stats to see if what is keeping your phone away under Partial wakelocks and/or Kernel wakelocks and also what other alarms might be affecting your phone. You can also use the same app to see how much time your phone is at each CPU State.
Yeah. If your phone is draining by 70% over night that's a bigger problem than just Android OS

When I was on stock 4.1, I was using around 15-20% overnight then I flashed CM stable 10, happily saw the overnight usage drop to 3-6%, then I flashed to CM 10.1 M and now losing 11-16% overnight. Running "deep sleep better battery pro" in slumber mode with little success. Have had issues with that but that's another story. Still in experimentation mode. Starting to use "best battery stats" in hopes of getting more info.

if you install snowjb it already comes with fast dormancy fix. on that rom, android system doesnt use much battery at all. here's a pic to show what i mean.
I think what we are seeing is that kernel wakelocks -- which can be caused by apps -- get lumped in under Android OS.
For example, I was seeing about 9% sns_async_ev or something wakelocks that went away when I froze Smart Wifi Toggler. This made no sense to me but it turns out they were caused by the app accessing the barometer, and turning that feature off virtually made them go away. Overall this was just a small amount of time awake, but all of these add up in that category. It would have been nice to see that under the app itself but there's no way to differentiate that.
After doing a complete wipe install of mean bean, my battery is still draining about 2%/minute. Now, I realize there is more than likely some other issue, that installing mean bean uncovered or removed the block before.
Questions;
1) is it normal for the screen to be using 60% of the battery power?
2) Is there actually an app that controls the battery usage, and truly kills apps?
- I have tested several, with no noticeable difference in power usage.

I'm not sure what I changed, I limited the processes to only 4 running, that might have helped. The battery still drains faster than before when the screen is on, but not as it was before. I am giving "Easy Battery Saver" a try see if that tells me anything useful, it at least keeps the settings that are applied. With any luck it will keep working until I break it again, lol.

I was having bad drain issues and read some post about location tracking with Google maps. I disabled that and my battery life on MB 3.09 is back to normal which is great.
Funny thing is this happened seemly out of no where but I think there was a recent update to maps. My location tracking has always been on and never seemed to affect battery life before. Go figure.
