Working on my Beastmode OOM project - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey guys, I'm sure several of you have noticed some of my amazing smooth running benchmarks from my SGII-i777 just inherited a Galaxy Note, while waiting on the Samsung/apple drama *facepalm* for my SGIII, either way I've been playing around with it and working on my coding for it, It'd be easier to run on an AOKP system, but nah, I want to make it noteworthy. I'm almost positive with my WebOS kernel expertise I can SAFELY being the key thing, get it OC'd to around 1950. Though of course, I'd be aiming for 2.0ghz. Anywho, anyone interested in helping with the project, I'd love any input, and am sorting through the posts now, yeah blah blah blah I know the n00b rule of reading first I'm just super excited to get to work on it.
MY SGII Scores hit 8200 in benchmarks, (pretty much across the board) even running multiple apps and the battery never exceeded 96 degrees Fahrenheit, also, that was at 1500mhz, at 1600, of course, it got hotter, but still ran fine, with no glitches, im beginning my work with the Note now, and research yeah if anyone wants to post the SGIII info below, to the proper site, feel free im too lazy and to unbothered to care lmao
sincerely,
Kobos311
*****ALSO KEY NOTE FROM MY DISTRICT MANAGER AT ATT****:
The SGIII, for ATT, as well as verizon, pretty much is going through the same thing the one-X did. Except much worse with the S-voice, etc, etc god forbid we slide to unlock too. But, He said if it continues, It may be even August before some of the orders are filled.
BUT THE GOOD NEWS
Google (according to his sources) is teaming up with LG, Motorola (duh), HTC, and Samsung, to fight Apple and the Apple iphone 5 due in early september and from whom I know that works at Intel..(through all this hub bub and an avid apple user himself) He quote on quote said "We'll be lucky if it's Christmas, as well as informed me of a new Intel Processor...but I'll quit getting off topic now... if you dont like it GO f' yourself
and one more thing IF ONE MORE DAMN PERSON ON A SAMSUNG THREAD ASKS ME ' OMG IS THIS A SENSE KERNEL" I'm going to murder small babies. thanks.

[Q] Explain to me this....

First and foremost, and I post this topic to mean no disrespect what-so-ever
I say again, I mean absolutely no disrespect. Now to my topic. Why does everyone on this board dedicate so much time and effort to a phone that is completely obsolete? Don't get me wrong, I still have my Droid Eris and I use it each and every day, but when my contract is up I am going to be getting a/the newer/newest phone out there. I just can't come to grips with why so many people dedicate so much time to putting together these roms and updates for a phone that is in several respects dead technology.
I mean no disrespect, and perhaps there is an explanation out there that I can't comprehend at the moment, but as I see it there are bigger and better things out there to spend time and work on.
I appreciate all the hard work that has been put into this phone by all the developers associated with these works... but a certain point a white flag must be raised. These 3.0 Sense roms that are popping up left and right... they are not intended for the Droid Eris, so why waste your time trying to make these work in perfect working condition, because let's face it, they won't. You're fighting a battle that cannot and will not be one. There will come a day that you may look back and wonder why time was wasted on this phone.
My $.02 with $.05 extra.
No disrespect, but why did you just spend so much time nay saying something that others clearly enjoy doing (developers) and using (users, obviously). You might look back at this tomorrow and wonder...
Part of the fun is getting a dead technology to work better than others think it possibly can (HTC, Verizon, you)
Sent from my ERIS using XDA Premium App
Because these developers have been able to take "dead technology" and get it running faster than the newest phone out there. My Eris currently out runs my wifes TB and also runs the newest software that currently isn't available to her phone without root, so I give much respect to the devs for what they can do.

Because its fun proving big red and HTC wrong and people still have this phone..y should they be left behind ...just like the hero ,g1 , also are still chugging along ..
And also...I have nothing else to do.. I'm disabled
No disrespect, Btw, you wont beleive, This phone is just launched in india,
http://www.mtsindia.in/smartphone/products.htm
There are lots of people still using G1, hero, droid eris technology.
now, for doing into deep in any technology, we need to learn some dead technology, we need to learn basics for being high.
We still learn C language, do you thing people use software developed in turbo 'C'.
Second thing is FUN, You might waste time in playing golf, watching porn playing PSP games etc etc.
Developer here like there time to be wasted in porting rom. sorry no disrespect.
If someone donate developers a high End phone then they might waste their time in alive technology.
Even though they have highend phone they still love to port for droid eris. Its all fun, way of thinking.
please dont take me wrong in any way, please.
You are right in some point, I agree with you. But unless and untill i didnt get any highend phone, I have to stick with it. I am a learner, before jumping to sensation. let me wash my hands to droid eris
Thanks to developer like, erasmux, tazz, macrodroid, workshed and manymore, bcoz of them we really get some good rom here. Its there work only for fun. (no $$$$)
Not everyone can afford the latest and greatest phone out there.
Why is anyone dedicated to anything? In the end the solar system will be swallowed up by the sun.
Because They Can
Im one of those that cant afford one of the newer phones and was just given this phone a couple months ago. If it wasnt for these great developers my experience with this phone would be much less enjoyable.
So to all the Devs in this forum I thank you for all your hard work and please keep up the good work.
Why do people enjoy solving puzzles? It is fun and rewarding. There is always room to make these devices better than they were when we bought them.
The Eris is still my only phone and some people are in the same situation. I am extremely grateful for the devs' work. There was a time when people said that the Eris would NEVER be able to handle Gingerbread. On the contrary, it runs gingerbread better than any other version of Android. It is amazing that this phone keeps becoming more and more powerful. These devs make our phones feel future proof.

My guess would be... the same reason you wasted your time starting this thread.... they enjoy it.
My next thought would be this... If you don't get/can't comprehend why the devs are still making roms for the Eris... unroot your Eris, use it stock and don't use any of the ROMs and you won't have to worry about it

^THIS^ is why I am thankful for all the Devs that work on this "old obsolete" Eris!
Or maybe not even that. I'm still under contract until April with my Eris. I'm not the primary on this account, so I have to wait my 2 years in order to get a discount.
Plus many enjoy the challenge of porting the OS to older hardware.
The CM team still maintains support for the original production Android phone, the G1.
Since the G1 and Eris are still very similar in performance and specs having them tweak CM to run decently on the G1 helps the Eris.
I think other than the Nexus 1, all the phones with the trackball are pretty much the same performance-wise. All have a ~500 Mhz Arm V6 CPU.

I can honestly say the eris is the phone I have the longest in all my years owning a cell phone. Yeah there are new and flashy phones that always come out but since rooting and loading zach's pure vanilla rom on it i haven't looked back. My contract is up in october and I have no plans on upgrading before then and maybe even after that. The eris dev's are excellent and they have really extended the life of the eris well past its scheduled funeral.
old is gold.
Funny...I do actually get this same question from some of the folks I know who have jumped and continue to jump on the latest and greatest that comes out. I used to be that way too. Then I explain to them the way they do in those Visa commercials....
Cost of donating to the developers for their hard work $ a few bucks here and there...(this is the most important one! )
Cost of upgrading to the latest and greatest phone $0 dollars
Cost of watching the phone guy at Best Buy mobile look at my phone and say "wow...your running that? ....on that phone????"........ $$$ PRICELESS
It's really very simple. People who stay with the Eris stay because either they like it just fine or can't afford to switch. Therefore, the efforts of devs which improve their experience are valiant and well worth. If you're unhappy with the Eris and can afford to switch go ahead and do so....and enjoy.
That being said, I see no useful or valid point in keeping this thread alive and personally wouldn't mind seeing it locked/deleted.
why they do it

Firstly,
I'd suggest the Eris doesn't have a "dead technology" just that there have been dramatic improvements in the hardware and hardware costs that are available to cellphone manufacturers of today compared to 2 years ago.
secondly,
for a cellphone manufacturer you get the most bang for your buck putting your software and hardware design engineers on the next best thing, rather than keeping an older model competitive... where would you put your money? continuing to optimize software for an old model (that you already got paid for) for better performance,or make the next phone really appealing to the consumer. It's the world of "planned obsolescence", and it keeps us buying newer phones from the manufacturers. The market's so huge, with so much competition that the development pace is very high.
on the Developers,
I'd suggest most of these guys seem have a passion for coding, so I'd guess making cleaner, more fully optimized code is the driver for them, the challenge of making a bit of old hardware competitive with the newer stuff seems like a complex puzzle, that they like solving... we just so happen to benefit from their passion.
You'll notice most of them don't ask for any type of payment, for what could be weeks and months of effort (in their free time), that's why it's nice to support a dev that's made something that saves you time or get a lot of use out of...
Keep up the good work everyone, I sincerely appreciate all the hard work!!!
First and foremost, and I post this reply to mean no disrespect what-so-ever
1) people still under contract
2) people unwilling/unable to purchase a newer phone
3) the phone is still very powerful.
4) most aren't yuppies that feel the need to upgrade everytime a company releases their sandbagged technology.
5) the foundation for learning how to develop rom's is here. learn here while the learning is good
truth be told, your post and this thread didn't need to be created at all. why do some people drive honda's and not just throw them away for a lexus? must be nice to have grown up with a silver spoon in ones mouth and have a view of the world that is disposable.

Because it's fun to see how far we can push these phones beyond their stated limits
Also for some devs i would gather it's experience too. Experience that could get them jobs, maybe even with the company that builds the phones you're deving on. Best way to learn something is to jump in and do it.
These phones are fairly cheap now and it seems it's one that had a lot of potential. I think we can all agree that HTC really didn't optimize it to it's fullest.

Pauls ROM reviews. viperROM review + interviews with -viperboy- and Vinchenzop

Hello everyone, I decided to start a little something called "Pauls ROM reviews" where I give you the low down on the hottest ROMs for the EVO 3D and give you some information about the developer/developing team and a little information and background about the people behind the ROMS. I figured this would be a fun way to get to know our developers more personally and to learn more about their work, and some of their future plans. Too often I feel we take them for granted so I thought giving you all some more information about the developers we can build more personal relationships so we can all understand one another better. I feel this will help build a stronger community and set us apart from some of the other forums on XDA.
This is very much an "average joe" review and is in no way claiming to be or attempting to be editorial quality material, structure, or content. This is meant to be a brief "feel" for what the ROM is about and what I think are the benefits of it, so please be gentle.
Today we are going to dive into viperROM, arguably one of the most popular ROMS. The viperROM thread is hot right now, a lot of people are excited about this ROM and its getting a lot of downloads and attention. The developers of this ROM are really on top of their game, are online often answering questions and being really helpful when people have problems. I feel they have a great dedication to their fan base and really care about their input and concerns, so I figured this would be a great place to start for a first ROM. Plus this is one of my favorite ROMs right now, so I really wanted to help spread the word out there for those of you still on the fence about rooting or maybe trying this ROM. I guarantee you: you want to try it! This is really great stuff guys.
First I would like to drive right into the ROM and go over some of its features with you. To set the record straight this will not be an insanely lengthy, long editorial over every single feature of the ROM. I will only be discussing some of the things I find most relevant and that other people will find relevant. Any questions about other features that aren't mentioned here should be directed to the viperROM thread in the Android Development section of the EVO 3D forums.
First and foremost I find the battery life to be good. Considering the screen on this phone I didn't expect it to be amazing, but I can typically make it about 8-10 hours with a lot of usage throughout the day at work texting and internet browing a lot of the day with the phone awake most of the time. I consider this pretty good. If you aren't an extremely heavy user it wouldn't surprise me if you could squeeze a good 15 hours or more out of this ROM if you have decent reception where you are at.
One of the great things about this ROM is the OC script that is built into the ROM. I really like this, because I feel that it is one less app running in the background consuming space and battery, and I think overall a script like this is probably more efficient than an application governing the CPU. It is quite simple to run and allows the governor of your sleep state and awake state, as well as all the clock speeds your particular kernel allows.
Hotspot is unlocked as well, ads are blocked, there are memory tweaks in the ROM, and a lot of bloatware we don't use has also been removed. Luckily for those who do want some of these apps, viper was courteous enough to leave the zip files on the SD card to install at your leisure. The four in one boot option is something that is really nice as well. There are other great additions to the ROM; I would recommend reading about them over in the development thread as these things are what are most important to me. One other thing, this ROM has one hell of a theme. It really looks great and is quite appealing to the eyes. Many people have a lot of positive feedback on it, so if you are an eye candy lover this should be a treat for you. Now I want to tell you about the best part of this ROM..
This is the true icing on the cake. Not only is this ROM feature rich and does not sacrifice any HTC Sense features for those of you who love Sense ROMS, but it runs FASTER than any other Sense ROM I have had the pleasure of running in the development section. For me, this runs faster than even the stripped Sense ROMs. That really says something to me; these guys did a fantastic job of optimizing here. They not only provided a feature rich package for us, but it runs so damn fast. I am running it at the default 1188MHz without a stutter or a hiccup in speeds. I highly recommend Opera Browser on this ROM as well, it is butter smooth, scrolling up and down pages is absolutely flawless and lag free. This is more than I could say for the stock ROM. I suspect a lot of this might be due to the GPU acceleration which was added in RC 1.3. For those of you who have tried this ROM before but might be using something else, you need to flash ViperROM RC 1.3. You won't be disappointed!
The main point about this ROM that I'd like to get out to you all is that if you want a ROM that doesn’t sacrifice HTC Sense and has stellar performance this is the one for you. There are a lot of options out there right now and a lot of you are overwhelmed and don't know where to start. This is where you should start; I feel this is the bar for Sense ROMs right now. Start with viperROM and then compare other ROMs; I don't think you'll regret it.
Go here to check out a full list of features. Read the first couple posts: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192628
Next it's time to meet -viperboy- and Vinchenzop, they are working on this ROM together and are a formidable team. I am going to ask them a bunch of questions. We will get to know these two developers a bit better, learn more about the ROM, their future plans for ViperROM and more. Let’s begin!
-viperboy- interview:
1. Tell us a bit about you, some of your hobbies and interests, what you like doing in your free time or whatever else you'd like your fans to know.
"Well, Android is my biggest hobby without a doubt. I do love cars as well, my daily driver is an 02 Nissan Maxima 6MT with about 5k in motor work (10k+ into the car total), quite the sleeper! haha I have a wonderful circle of friends that I know I can always count on and a wonderful girlfriend who puts up with all my Android nonsense lol
I used to work for Verizon Wireless as an In-Store Technician. I was very good at what I did, getting calls from District Managers 150+ miles away asking me how to solve major customer issues, leading conference calls to entire districts to fill them in on new technology and information we should know about (pulled many an article to share from Droid-Life and EngadgetMobile!), and, most importantly, making my customers happy. I am a people-pleaser and I did everything I could to make a customer happy, including honoring warrantys on rooted phones
I loved my job but I had to leave my full-time job at Verizon Wireless to work part-time at Best Buy so I could go back to school. I am a Multi-Channel Sales Associate (aka "Store *****" - the person you talk to on the phone when you call and ask me annoying questions like "Do you have one of them iPod 2 tablet things??") Everyone at works knows I'm nuts about phones and Android and I used to work in Best Buy Mobile and brought alot of my talent over there. I pretty much got everyone on the Android train and taught people how to mod their own phones! Quite a beautiful thing!
I currently attend Penn State University persuing a degree in Information Science and Technology. One day, I would love to work for HTC or one of the other OEMs with my dream job being working for Google in their Android division!"

2. How long have you been developing on the Android platform?
"I have been deving for Android for less than 6 months but I've learned so much, it's insane! Right now, my big projects are viperROM and viperMOD Voltage Control. viperROM is my first ROM and I've created and I'm very proud to put my name on it. viperMOD Voltage Control has been about 4 months in the making, starting out as a fairly simple shell script and now the app is almost complete! I found that I really enjoy shell scripting the deeper I got into viperMOD and I would consider that my "specialty"."

3. How do you feel about the future of the EVO 3D? Do you feel there are great things to come and still more potential to be unlocked in this phone?
"I think there is a great future for the EVO 3D! This phone has some of the best specs out there right now and the hardware is incredibly powerful, so there are many things going its way. There are a huge amount of ROMs out not even a week since we had S-OFF which I think really says how much interest there is in this phone. I would say that within the next month you will see some very amazing things starting to happen to this phone, so yes, plenty of potential still left in this phone (overclocking and tweaking the GPU, powerful custom kernels, etc)"

4. What about the EVO 3D inspired you to know you wanted to develop for it? Is the EVO 3D your primary phone? If not what is?
"Truthfully, the hardware was the main draw for me. I didn't care much about the 3D part of the phone, although it is a cool "Look what my phone can do!" feature. I really see some tremendous potential in the hardware (And software too). Yes, the EVO 3D is my primary phone. I used to have an HTC EVO 4G before this and almost every Verizon Android phone when I worked for them - D1, DInc, DX (most recent phone when I left). My Dad, stepsister, stepmom, brother, and girlfriend all have Android's (EVO 3D, HTC Hero, Samsung Epic, HTC EVO Shift, and Samsung Captivate, respectively) but my mom and stepdad are too technically challened to want an Android lol"

5. What made you choose to develop on the Android platform? Have you ever considered WebOS or iOS? What are your feelings about these platforms?
"I have had alot of phones in my day, even when I was in grade school and high school I would call Sprint and play the retention game and get new phones literally every few months. My Dad never cared as long as hit bill wasn't messed up lol I started over on SprintUsers.com working with BitPim to mod the RAZR2 and posting guides on how to work with it at the age of about 13/14. Once I found how much fun it was to modify phones, that was it! I moved away from dumbphones and started to get into smartphones. I had phones WinMo phones like the Moto Q, HTC Mogul, and HTC Touch. That was my platform of choice until I go into Blackberry. I really liked how solid they were and I wasn't a power user like I am now, so I liked it. The Blackberry 8900 was one of my favorite phones, to be honest. Looked great and was just fun to use! I would say the D1 was and always will be my favorite, as it was my entry into Android, then the HTC EVO 4G, and then the EVo 3D (slowly moving up my list!)
A little more on topic to the question you asked - I really liked the customization that you get with an Android phone. I liked that it was easy to hack and easy to make it feel like it was meant for you. I love that there is a ton of support out there for Android, XDA really is a wonderful site (minus the douchebaggery that can go on sometimes) I bought the original iphone back when it came out (had to drive to philly to get it since that was the closest apple store at the time and ATT wouldn't sell me an unlocked one!) and beta tested the original jailbreak and unlock for it. I managed to get it working on T-Mobile's prepaid sidekick plan and used it for a while. It was a cool phone at the time, but it still felt like it was lacking something. I also had the Pre for about 2 weeks and I just did not like it. No customization and I didn't think it had a good future (seems like I might have been right lol)
I feel like webOS will continue to be pushed by HP for a while, but I don't see it suceeding as a mobile platform and I see that slowly coming to and end. As for iOS, it does a great job with having almost identical SW between the devices (something android undeniably still lacks at the moment) and when jailbroken, I don't mind using it for a few days, but then I get bored but it will be taken over by Android and we are seeing that happen now. Android is only going to continue taking an even bigger lead."

6. Are you surprised by the success of viperROM?
"To be honest, yes I am. I built the ROM as a fun project for me to see how I could do and I thought I might get a small following of people from the EVO 4G that liked viperMOD Voltage Control to use my ROM. I had NO idea that it was going to hit it off like this! It was, to my knowledge, the first booting and working EVO 3D ROM on S-OFF day. Just for a few stats, scott951 @miuimods.net gratiously offered to host our ROM but we had no idea what we were in for. In less than a week, we blew through over 7TB of data, so with the ROM being ~350mb, if my math is correct, that's almost 21,000 total downloads of RC1, RC1.1, and RC1.2. It was so much that scott951's host suspended the account, forcing us to look elsewhere for a host. We settled on dev-host.org and multiupload for mirror (after a failed attempt with wupload) and since then, we've had over 2500 downloads of RC1.3 in less than a 24hr period. I would say that's pretty good.
Also as it stand, we have the most posts and views of any ROM thread in EVO 3D dev "

7. What are some of your future plans with the EVO 3D or the Android platform in general?
"I would like to get more into kernel development. I find it interesting and there is alot of technical information to learn which is fun for me to learn. Plus, that means that I can have a device running everything I made and I know everything can work together in perfect harmony. I'd also like to play with the GPU a little bit more and see how far it can be pushed.
The next big thing I'm going to need to get ready for is the launch of viperMOD Voltage Control and supporting as many devices as possible. I want to get this app to work on any device with a compatible kernel!"

10. What do you feel sets viperROM apart from all the other ROMs for the EVO 3D?
"What sets viperROM apart is the OC daemon that I implemented and build a script to work with it, battery life that is better than any other ROM while maintaining excellent performance, and lastly but most important is unparalleled user support. I am in my thread as often as possible to answer questions and support my work. If it takes more than an hour or so for a response from me, that is out of the ordinary. I also respond to every PM and email that I get. I want my users to have the same great experience I do when I use my ROM and I want to make sure they enjoy it, that is very important to me. "

11. How did you and Vinchenzop team up?
"That is a funny story, but the short and sweet version is we had a chat one time via PM about how we noticed that a certain dev or devs weren't really doing their own work and were claiming other peoples work as theirs. We both found it repulsive and ridiculous and decided that we would make a good team together and we really do. I do almost all of the ROM work and he does almost all of the theme work and that really helps me out because it gives me more time to work on my stuff. He always gets things done quickly and fixes things for me almost right away if there is anything that isn't correct the first time around. I'm happy to have him as part of viperROM "

1. Tell us a bit about you, some of your hobbies and interests, what you like doing in your free time or whatever else you'd like your fans to know.

3. How do you feel about the future of the EVO 3D? Do you feel there are great things to come and still more potential to be unlocked in this phone?
"Absolutely! This phone is a borderline mini-computer I know, that term has been used for years to describe "smart-phones", but this is the first time that I feel that it really applies to a phone correctly. With the obvious talent in the dev-pool on the Evo 3D, I think many great things are in the future of this phone."

4. What about the EVO 3D inspired you to know you wanted to develop for it? Is the EVO 3D your primary phone? If not what is?
"Yes, the Evo 3D is my primary phone. The thing that inspired me to develop for it was that I used to do dev work on the Evo 4G, and I wanted to translate my ideas and efforts to help in the Evo 3D community as much as I did for the 4G."

5. What made you choose to develop on the Android platform? Have you ever considered WebOS or iOS? What are your feelings about these platforms?
"I choose the Android scene because that was what was on my Evo 4G. I saw that phone when it first came out, and knew I'd wanted it. Once I had it, I knew I wanted to personalize it, and well, you know the rest.
As far as WebOS and IOS...It's been a few years since I've used a phone that had any windows-based software on it (I think it was when the Moto Q came out), so I'm not familiar with the specifics on that side of the fence. IOS? Well, as stated earlier, I love music, and in my personal opinion, IPods have that market covered, at least in my house."

6. Are you surprised by the success of ViperROM?

7. What are some of your future plans with the EVO 3D or the Android platform in general?
"Just keeping up with whatever projects Team Viper (derek and I) feel needed to be put out into the community to fill any niche that needs attention. More specifically, fulfilling requests of our seemingly, very large ROM-followers."

8. What kinds of things can we look forward to in future releases of ViperROM? Are there any surprises we will want to keep our eyes open for?
"Top Secret! No, not really...with us, we're more worried about the overall base of the ROM, which from feedback from the users, we've succeeded thus far. So currently, future plans consist of aesthetic changes/options. Applying user feedback requests, and just trying to make everyone experience their phone the way they should...their way."

9. What the hell is this "3VO" I keep hearing about?!
"I personally, don't like the whole "3VO" thing, I let the phone and its capacities speak for itself. Nicknames only work throughout this community, and don't apply to real-world encounters, so to me its still an "Evo 3D"
Thanks for your time guys im sure people will enjoy reading this!
Thanks to anyone that has made suggestions, donations, given feedback, positive or negative, because those are the things that keep not only viperROM, but this entire, wonderful developing community, going strong.

I realized afterwords that I forgot to add in the question about how you and your partner started working on the ROM together, you could elaborate on that here too if you'd like and I can add it to the OP.

I think It's a good idea..I enjoyed reading about the devs and found it interesting that two average guys were able to put together such a complete Rom without tons of experience..must be smart guys..good job op..hopefully some other devs will participate..and i know more will be coming around sooner or later..hint myn..
Great Stuff and great Idea. Beings that I just rooted my first Android Phone Ever this will help me get a look at some of the Roms out there and get some user feedback.
Viper Rom Sounds great!!
Updated OP with additional interview question in the -viperboy- interview section for those who missed it.
This is one of the best threads out. Very good idea. I enjoyed reading this. Thanks. Great thread.

The Current State of Affairs with our X2

Before i begin my rant, a precursor..This is not a post about the Devs not getting us unlocked BL or whatever may be... Far far from that.. My thanks and Enormous respect and gratitude go out to every single Dev and User who has helped not only myself, but every other user on XDA and other boards with the Droid X2.
The party seems to be over. I think the bulk of us knew, getting the X2 was more of a bridge in the gap til our next big phone, which I believed would be a 2nd Gen 4G LTE device. The droid Bionic hit today and yes, its obviously a much more robust product, kinda the same kinda different, then our beloved X/X2.
Where I live (Long Island) 4G is pretty prevelant.. I have used the Pantech 4G modem on a macbook and it got me 35 Meg down over air (6 meg up), which almost made me faint. This isnt about speed tho and the x2's lack of 4g..
The facts are the Devs are all killing themselves, trying so hard to come up with a way to make teh x2 better.. Untapped and unrealized potential we have in this device. Unfortunatley i dont see a light at the end of this tunnel.
Perhaps Ice Cream will save us end of the year, or Q1 of 2012, but thats doubtful. I came to the X2 on the sheer hope and belif that NVidia's Tegra 2 was gonna reign the supreme King of all processors on the mobile market.. Yet new phones are using TI more now. Why? Dunno.. Motorola has been hush as to why they didnt use the Tegra in the Bionic..
When i got the x2, as im sure most of you had, it was $199.. 4 weeks later its $99. Now its buy one get one free. Every since i have used smartphones (Since the old samsung SCH-i600 Win Mo 2002 phone), I have never seen the life of a phone come and go so fast..
Maybe thats my most annoying thins. It may not be true that the phone is Dead, or that dev will cease, but it sure as hell feels like it, don't it? Look at the facts:
-Hardly Any new topics across 6 different forums (XDA, DroidForums, Motorola, AndroidForums Etc).
-Buy one Get one Free (aka verizon saying PLEASE TAKE THIS OFF OUR HANDS)
I just wanted to get this off my mind.. I love my x2, it has been by far the best phone i ever had, not even CLOSE.. The surely untapped potential of this device, and its dual core capability + Nvidida 3d backing just leaves me craving oh so much more.
A few points in response....
1, I feel you pain a little bit. Im not terribly concerned about the phone itself because, I do like it (except for the damn music skipping..thats pretty annoying).
I also do not enjoy the lack of "chit chat" so to speak on the different forum boards. On the D1, I could make a comment (or a theme) and 20 minutes later the thread was on the 2nd page. I enjoy the communication.
As a themer, I enjoy making them but you are right here somewhat. It takes a lot of hours to make a theme and probably even more over the long run to maintain it. My D1 themes were downloaded 1000's of times. So far, as of last night anyway, my X2 theme has been downloaded 42 times. That makes it real tough to convince myself to keep doing it. Not a slam in anyway, just a limitation of the amount of X2 users.
I bought my D1 as a BOGO and it was over a year before anything came out that made people abondon ship en masse.
The Bionic and probably every 4G phone to come has a price point of $299. Tough pill to swallow when thinking about bailing on the X2.
Eclipse is pretty much the only ROM I use and Nitro seems to be banging it out left and right. I don't think hes going anywhere anytime soon.
Thanks for such a fast response honestly.. It's good to clear the cobwebs around here every once in a while..
You make fantastic points on all fronts.
I can only imagine the time and effort put into your themes and roms etc.. One for which i would never have the time nor patience to get involved in.
As with all technology, and myself being in the IT industry for over 20 years knows, that You get the best, but as soon as you get it, its not the best anymore.. I think what hurt most of all in this entire process, was after the fight and aching to get GB on the X2, its like that was the end of the fight.. Nothing left to look forward too.
The phone works. Every android device has software issues. We all know this. I think the thing every user here wants, is to know just how far and what this X2 can really do.. What happens if we put the pedal to the floor, will this thing burn rubber? Or have we hit the ceiling? Is this all the x2 has and should we months from now when our contracts start dwindling down, start looking at the future alternatives?
My comparison (to laugh), the X2 is like the old Commodore 128. Built on top of the Commodore 64, best selling computer ever, the 128 had promise.. Was faster, more robust, etc.. It never reached its potential because 95% of the time, it was being used in Commodore 64 Mode. Then we all went out and got an IBM.
i dont see the phone being dropped any time soon. it has the new dual core and gpu chipsets and its 100$. not everyone can afford a bionic. also 4g isnt in that many places. i still see people with droid2s. im sure there are people in the boat i was in. pretty much i didnt want a non smart phone for 2 years and verizon had this at 100$ why would you pass that up if you are tight on money
I hear ya, but its not really about not wanting one because of lack of 4g in your area or like that. Obviously the $99 price tag is amazing for what it is, but what i'm saying is that in the what, 4 months the phone has been out it is already shelved, being dismissed, and honestly slowed to a crawl any and all wonderful enhancements we were all waiting and anticipating.
Its the nature of the beast.. Every phone or electronic device goes thru this, i just can not remember one happening tho THIS FAST?
I was an Avid HTC Touch Pro 2 user on verizon.. That thing was honestly DOG SH*T slow since day 1, yet the community kept that alive for me for almost 3 Years of use, as painstaking as it was.. Roms, apps etc that just kept me wanting more and more...
I feel (and i don't think im the only one) like with the Lack of chatter, as a previous post said, the lack of push from motorola, now motogoogle, the locked device etc.. we are at an impasse. Its not anyones fault. It is what it is..
Maybe some of us thouhgt for the initial $199 (more like $320 after all the docs, extra batteries etc that some of us, like me, bought) and we would honestly have a solid year + of things to look forward too.. Instead, (and again this is just my perception, i may be 100% wrong, and or you can see it different) I feel like the development cycle has slowed down because no one can crack this sucker. There pushing us out the door like an after thought..
Hell Verizon ran that Father's Day X2 commercial, for what, 3 weeks maybe.. Not even 1 commercial about the X2 since (Except for 1 buy one get one free offer i saw about a week ago). Aka, Dismissed. Now i didnt expect Verizon to push the thing for 6 months, obviously.. but hey i thought this thing was a special peice of hardware.. C'mon, its NVIDIA ffs. The King of 3D Graphics.. I was (and still am) convinced that if anyone out there was to make a 3d capable device that could have an interface that wipes the iphone off the map, it would be via NVIDIA.
It could be me overthinking things, or just the fact that i Love this hardware... After years upon years of windows mobile bashing my brains to puree (i havent played with win phone 7, its suppose to be SALTY with the Mango update).. To have a device that WORKS is amazing to me still.. I just want more, and i want the users who share the experience with me to have the best possible usage out of a decice that deserved better then it has gotten.
I agree with subdivision. I have and am still having buyers remorse with my x2. The devs for this phone have been great and worked very hard to make this a great phone, but lets face it 4g is where everyone is going now. Not to mention making huge leaps in custom deving a phone truly takes a large dev pool, something that we just don't have.
We recently switched our family plan over to my brothers Wells Fargo corporate account, with that comes one year contracts and no charge for extra lines.
I look forward to next June when I can change this thing in for the next phone.

honestly a week or 2 ago verizon had nothing that was better than the x2 in my book with maybe the exception of the droid 3 but i hated the keyboard. now they have the bionic if you want to pay for it. i guess verizon just has ****ty phones
Ok I just got my DX2 Friday and I moved from the Droid Eris we spent 8mo to get a full working root for everyone s-on and leaked 2.1 users. Someone knows someone just like in our case who gave up an answer to what we were missing on vulnerability.
Has anyone gone outside of this forum to find Devs bftb0, TopazArron, JCase, Darchstar, rigmarts, tazzpatriot, punkaos, and zifnab06 these are all Super intelligent Devs/Hackers that I was in on the IRC with researching for months exploits.
Who do we have dev wise that has rooted a phone from a 0day? Are we setting up them an IRC server and letting only thoes members in? I see a lot of prommised money and that is all good but no traffic for a Dev to root a device is present. I am not aware of who found the current workarounds or if other exploits worked so if there are Devs active sorry didn't know just got the phone.
The Droid Eris had no commercial time at all I just found it cause it was cheaper than the Droid 1. Once an root was found the aboved mentioned move on to other devices but the Themers and ROM Devs steped in and are still going, all for a phone that isn't even sold anymore.
So instead of being all upset about it spend that time getting to know other devs from other forums and finding out exploits or befriending them to possibly work on our phone. I just tweeted Jcase to see what he is up to.
A good Dev will enjoy the challenge this Ef'n bootloader and Communist Motorola has created. And with the recent purchase of Motorola by Google could be a good thing, most of the Season Rooters have contacts in Google and could get info.
I just went to PM Jcase and he is currently active looking at the bounty page. Now since it is a bunch of people just offering money I would think if the second pot for a DX2 for the Dev to use has to be legit. They are going to have to have one or two if they do work on it.
I think our best hacker for x2 is navenedrob and he doesn't even own an x2 lol

Once again, i don't mean to be repetitive, but please do not take this thread as a "OMG THE DEVS ARENT DOING ANYTHING JUMP SHIP" post.. Totally not my intent.
Voicing my frustration at Verizon, Motorola.. and to a lesser extent NVidia and Google. No phone is perfect, again we all know that. This device COULD be one of if not a TOP Tier phone for the next 2 years if the proper people and channels got together and did something about it.
First off Verizon could have really pushed the Dual Core Phone as the future, and heads above the rest, since it out benchmarked every phone they had almost 5 fold.
Motorola could have been seen as a savior, instead of a villain, by giving us that true open source Option.. Unlocked Phone, Choice to remove Blur etc..
Google could have gotten off its pile of huge money and stock and said "Hey, we don't like how you are using our OS on this device, that has to change Pronto"..
NVidia could have said "Hey why are you not taking proper advantage of Our Tegra 2 chipset to show really what this bad boy can do?".
What IF's.. Thats all we have had with this phone.. What iF it was unlocked.. What IF both cores were truly being used correctly.. what if.. what if.. what if..
Our phone is a Very Very good phone. I Love it.. I have tailored it to suit me SO well that i honestly wouldn't change it for any device short of maybe the Galaxy S 2 only cause that seems to be the phone thats making everyone go gaga.. but i will say the Simple reason i didn't get a thunderbolt or wait for the bionic was the scary 4G battery life issue.
My upgrade was available in MARCH. I waited until JUNE to get the X2 to research and make a proper educated decision, along with my friend Ringo was was an AVID X User, and how much he loved it. I said OMG X + Nvidia = JESUS REINCARNATED AS A PHONE!
Maybe if anything, maybe my post can somehow get a snowball rolling down a hill. Maybe it will or can motivate that bunch of people to come out of the woodworks and say, u know what, this thing really deserves to show what it can do.
If in any way i could help this community, hardware, software, money whatever was to my ability, i would in a heartbeat.. only because i believe in every single user who visits XDA and these forums as users who truly are INTO their devices and only wants the best for the user base.
I prey a year from now, we are all on some great custom rome, running ice Ice Cream Sandwich and saying my god how this almost 2 year old device is still one of the best phones on the market.
I'm with ya Sub, we were probably shopping phones about the same time. When it became clear that the bionic was a ways out I plunked down my cash for the X2. It was a big jump coming from my trusty TP2. I would have to say that my TP2 was the best phone I've had. It was FAR more stable than this thing. My wife is about ready to throw it out the window when it crashes and reboots at night and makes the famous "drooiiid" sound and wakes her up. Coming from winmo it seemed like android was the way to go since WP7 was going to be completely locked down. I have been disappointed to see how weak android is out of the box, and to see that I can't even do a wifi hotspot with this phone (at least without paying).
I do think that there's some light at the end of the tunnel though. I've seen a LOT more marketing for the X2 in the last couple weeks. Yes, they're selling them cheap, and they're doing BOGO, but they're doing the same thing with the Droid3. So I don't think its dumping excess hardware. Hopefully its building user base and with more users they'll fix some of the phones problems. Verizon sent me a trade-in notice offering $100 or more trade in for a bionic, so if I pitched a fit maybe they'd let me in on one of those. I considered it for a short time, but 4G is pointless for me for probably years. And I really do like the docks for the X2, I just wish they weren't so buggy.
I think I'm going to try to hang in there for a while, and hopefully we see some progress. Maybe somebody will even figure out how to get the thing to play an mp3 track without skipping.
Thanks man..
There are 2 people here in the boat with us.. Those that are under contract who HAVE to wait for something new, and those who aren't but love the X2 to stay with it...
I for one wouldn't change it right now as i love the phone, i just want it to succeed where others have failed, and truly take advantage of the hardware we were given.
I still want to know why motorola only put 512M (or 414 whatever) in this thing, which just made ZERO sense to me... With ram being so available, and So cheap, why not toss at least 1GB, or 2GB.. Set it apart.

Lol right, the bootloader killed it, and everyone's busy with the 4g's thats what going on, vzw pushing 4g the "thunderbolt" No one cares about a dual core... I mean the d3 is deadish too, Bionic might save it, cuz it has same processor, but moto's dead atm, sh-t battery etc
I have PM jt1134 from the Fascinate forum. An effort to try and get another dev possibly interested in joining minds with others here. He's well respected there but I'm not sure of his interest here, if any. It's worth a shot!

I don't think bionic has Tehran. I believe it is TI omap
And moto is mum on why they didn't use tegra. Is it possible that ia where our buggy music problem resides? Since they don't seem to wanna admit that either
I'm pretty sure the tegra 2 didn't get along with 4g. That's why it was scrapped 9 mos ago.

Yeah, d3 has a ti
Honestly I wouldn't worry about this phone fading away man it has a lot going for it. I mean we have Nitro w/ Eclipse and Naven whom is going to uploaded all atrix ports which I am looking forward to (esp alien rom). I know someone is working on getting CM7! We have 2nd init going for us now, and if moto keeps true to it's word an unlocked bootloader soon? As for the switch to TI I think it has something to do w/ the partnership w/ Google. Yes the Bionic has a tad more power under it's belt, but nothing earth shattering imo. The newer blur probably coded better, but I want a full AOSP experience anyways so I'm not too worried about that.
X2 pretty much carries the specs of the Bionic concept I think? The Tegra 2, 512 MB of DDR2, qHD, it just lacks 4G which I could care less about since I have a 100 mbps connection at home. FFC I could care less about either, the 1GB of RAM woulda been nice though. I still love the X2 though it's GREAT as a phone, best in call quality I've experienced in awhile. So don't worry the X2 will have development and will be around for awhile.
I think the responses in this thread give us all reason for future hope, granted its not blowing up XDA, but it still shows i think some true and viable interest here.. It was and is a downer to see lack of new threads, and just overall activity for our beloved X2, hence why i think i created this tread..
Stirr the pot.. Kick the tires.. See if the motor is still runnin or are we about to get sent to the junk pile.
Here is what i would love to happen in a perfect world:
Unlocked Bootloader (DUH)
A myrad of custom roms of all walks and versions of Android
Customization like the old Win Mobile devices
True dual core coding and usage of apps and the os
Freedom to truly take this thing to a new level.
Freedom is the key.. How is it were on an open source device, that is basically closed thx to Motorola.. How can google not be really P.O'd about that?
I believe in this user base, especially those here @ XDA, where honestly the true and best mobile programmers, coders, and customizers seem to come when things are happenin the way it should.
For all the trash people talk about this device, if someone ever cracks the bootloader you know for a fact were gonna have 50 devs and 5000 people jump on this phone overnight

Disappointed with my Prime

So after a couple of months of research, i decided to go ahead and spend $500 for a new Transformer Prime, thinking it was the coolest and fastest tablet out there. The fact that it runs android and that i can root it and load custom roms on it was just an added bonus. I've had an E4GT for about six months now, so im very familiar with the android community.
However, after about a week with this tablet, im very disappointed. wifi, to be quite honest, sucks, the stock browser locks up for no reason all the time, the whole pad gets really hot when i simply watch a movie on netflix with the brightness turned all the way down. Multi-tasking is terrible, switching from facebook to USA Today to twitter is completely laggy. i bought this tablet as something to use instead of lugging my laptop all around the house with me, but to be honest, id rather sit on my laptop if it meant i didnt have to wait 30 seconds to a minute just for the XDA site to load. for this tablet being a quad core, it runs slower than my dual core phone. battery life also, has seemed to be an issue. one movie on netflix over a very stable wifi with brightness turned all the way down will run out my whole battery. also ive tried a few games, since its advertised as a tegra 3 gaming tablet, and games such as GTA and NOVA arent even very good, frame rate is slow and laggy.
Another thing that i was disappointed with were the number of roms/kernels/tweaks i could do to the machine. now im not trying to discredit the devs, i know they do a TON of work on the roms and such that are out there, so dont flame me, however ive found that even most of the custom roms for our TFP dont really come with alot of custom options, unless you go with CM9 or AOKP.
my mom just bought a new ipad, and i know i know its apple they such blahh blahh and yes, the lack of customizability would absolutely drive me insane, but the browser is wicked fast, the battery life is incredible, and switching between apps is completely seamless. everything youd expect from a $500 tablet
now right now i am running the latest version of AOKP, and the above is all of the things that i keep running into. however, i have run multiple stock and custom roms, and they all seemed to give me the same problems. if the problems im running into are rom based, then please by all means point me in the right direction. i certainly do not know everything about android.
sorry this post is long, but i dont know what im going to do, i definitely not happy with my prime, but when it comes down to the specs, its the best tablet on the market. i guess if in a week or two im still not happy with it ill return it, but if theres anything any of you know that will spark a new love for my prime, id greatly appreciate it.

I think 95% of people on this forum are tired of these threads appearing. Why didn't you post your comments in a thread like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444084
I presume your intent was to start a flame war. Enjoy it while it lasts. I hope the mods put this thread out of its misery ASAP
What people should do instead of posting this kind of thing here is send Asus an email.
I'm not saying the email wouldn't just vanish into the ether, but complaining to other users isn't going to accomplish anything.
If you're unhappy, email Asus and let them know.

The problem with the first post of that thread is there's nothing about the lag/browser/io.
You should of RMA it before you unlocked for WIFI.
I have 2 primes, Unlocked and running AKOP
I must say i disagree with everything you say. My tablet is FIRE
Speed is nuts.
Now all we need is a win8 port =)
What kind of customization are you looking for exactly? I do most of mine through widgets, apps, launchers, and live wallpapers, which are mostly rom independent (except the cornerstone roms, which can't use live wallpapers)
And the kernel you use can also affect your wifi experiences.
Try installing Ad Free, it will make your browsing experience much smoother

i agree for one part: aopk is realy snappy. but stock based (androwook) owns it by far in terms of stability and battery life.
we need best of 2 worlds.
in both cases extremely bad IO write speed which causes slowdowns and queueing. this is realy a bugger, hope its fixable.
I realize all some of the things I mentioned have been talked about before, the reason I posted was to see if there was something out there that I was missing that would improve my experience. All you trolls do is look for people to flame. If you really want to contribute to the community how about you help someone out that just spent $500 on a tablet that doesn't deliver what it said it would. So thanks trolls for encouraging me to return this tablet even more. Great community, real helpful. At least the people in the E4GT threads try to do something about the problems they find with their device, instead of just flaming people

Ya, a noob that claims to have done months of research on the Prime before deciding to buy one. If you did all that research wouldn't you have known about the problems some have experienced? What we have here is an iFan troll IMHO. See how the topic eventually got to mentioning the iPad.
If I was still in the return window , this is just me my honest opinion is just return it and wait on something better , plenty of options coming up. I don't have the browser or lag problems some people have but the wifi/BT problem absolutely ticks me off, GPS was dead on mine out the box and Asus screwed up its initial dongle shipments I had to have 75 other people post in a thread before getting any response from people at corporate about it to have them send me another one. Its a great looking tablet but QC on these things is just terrible and my opinion the company isnt much better (shame on Google for going with Asus for the Nexus tablet that really irks me too), TF201 will be last Asus product I buy, you either get one thats great or one with some issue

See my post previous post about improving your web browsing experience.
We probably have different expectations, because I'm running a stock based rom as my daily driver and honestly I'm overall very happy with the experience. I don't use the stock web browser, so maybe that may be the difference, or not.
I also don't seem to notice much lag from switching between apps... then again I'm also not watching lag like a hawk either, so if it does exist, it's not enough for me to take notice.
Lastly, if you put yourself out there then just be ready for the flames to come out. It's probably true that this forum seems to have a higher ratio of trolls though... I guess some people really take this stuff too seriously. But if you let their comments get to you then they have won...

Im new to Tabs but been runnin all kinds of Custom Roms GB and ICS on my 4G Sprint Touch here @ XDA...Mines overclocked at 1.6 and Smokes...I found out the best way to improve it was to read a lotta threads and get different ideas on what to run...
Just like here Ive read a lot of threads ran about 5 different roms with overclocked kernels up to 1.8...My Prime also smokes...from videos to music... movies... you name it...don't notice any lag...Im runnin Wookies Prime 1.0 ...quadrants of 5200-5900 @ performance...Gummys is Super Fast as well...but to me Wooks is more stable...Im more than satisfied the way I set mine up...So just read a bit on here ...set it up the right way and Im sure you'll luv it....
And I think a lotta members on here are more than willing to help...Of course Im unlocked and rooted...Bricked it the first day...But with the help from here...got back up and runnin in about an hour... haven't had a problem since...

I am sorry that the Prime isn't all you were expecting it to be. I am glad you did months of research before posting here, however had you done so you would have noticed three things for sure:
Many people have the same issues as you, and there are threads already addressing the specific issues you mention.
We just had a major ****-storm on this forum over the massive number of duplicate posts talking about the same issues and problems.
Starting threads that are duplicates of topics that already exist on the forum is a "no-no" according to XDA forum rules.
Again I am sorry that the Prime doesn't meet your needs, and I am very sorry for some of the replies you have gotten in this thread. All I can say is people are a little more sensitive to duplicate posts, especially ones that complain without offering any possible solutions to the problems that are the source of the complaint.
If your Prime didn't met your needs you should have returned it to the store before voiding your warranty trying to fix the problem. You still might want to give this a try, or try exchanging it for another Prime and tell them that WiFi isn't working properly as it is an issue most retailers know about. Most retail locations won't check a device to see if its bootloader has been unlocked.
Also if your problem is specifically with Wifi performance, or at least, you phrase it that way to Asus, there is a good chance they will still allow you to RMA the Prime as they have done so for several other people on the forum.
Is not your xda here....

I have flashed every ROM that exists for the Prime, and all have their own minor issues.
For my Prime, I have to say the new Androwook Prime custom ROM is the best there is.
If you haven't tried it yet, do it... you have nothing to lose but a few minutes of your time.
Just go read the (95% positive) feedback and you'll want to try it.... it's got freakin Sony Bravia engine in it man It is the fastest ROM I've ever run, super stable, no browser lag or not responding messages, and the WiFi is great. I do like AOKP and Gummy but WiFi sucks on my Prime with those ROMS.
Give it a shot man... come back tonight and let me know how it worked out for ya.
Oh, BTW... after installing Androwook, I got an app called GMD GestureControl... wow it's amazing. Ceck into that too... in love with my Prime even more than ever.

I agree with this 100%
@OP don't take none of the remarks personal. I feel your gripes. Its just that EVERYONE is really frustrated. Especially on duplicate complaint threads. the reason for that is because most are posted just complaining without trying to find a solution or answer to the problem. I know it wasn't this in your case, but just saying in general. People in the Prime forum are actually very helpful and like the other forum you described. Everyone is on edge with this device. We have primes that work great and people satisfied with them & then we have people with primes that have issues and are unhappy. So don't take the flaming remarks to heart.
Try that rom like jaycustom said, since you are unlocked. if your main gripe is wifi, just call Asus and see what they can do. you never know, they might just go on and fix your device although its unlocked. people have had success with that route.
good luck on finding a solution and don't be discouraged.
thank you hairdewx and jaycustom for actually responding with something useful. the reason i posted was to learn. learn more about the device i have and how to set it up the right way to get the results i want. i like the androwook custom rom, but i really like the toggles of AOKP, i use them ALOT. i will try your suggestions and see what i can find out. i tried to use the custom build prop in the development section, but everytime i do it and follow the directions it wont boot past the asus screen. maybe im doing it wrong and i will try it again. thanks again to those of you that actually made an effort to try and help me. my post was not to *****, but yet make the best with what i had.
Love my Prime. Running Virtuous Rom and it is seemless. I have the latest build (serial # starting with C4) so I dont know if they have fixed up the wifi/GPS issues in this build but it is great.
I too am noob and did a fair bit of searching before I purchased (2 weeks ago). I was aware of the GPS/Wifi issues but had read that the new dongle fixed that but hadn't read much about lag or any other problems. All the reviews I read were extremely glowing of the tablet and most ranked their #1. Anyway I suppose I was lucky to get one that works perfectly.
Does anyone know if C4 build has all issues ironed out now? it would be great if it does but Asus should replace tab for those that are extremely unhappy.
Once again, Love my Prime!!!!!

My apologies

I was off to a great start on XDA, helped a lot of people, made a mod or two and gathered a decent number of thanks.
Lately though, I've been frustrated and it's showing in my posts.
I'm frustrated because after probably more than 150$ in donations to different people, it seems that developers left one right after the other and that money I gave to encourage development is now used to develop for another phone.
I understand there's no obligation for developers to stick to a phone for ever, everyone wants to play with the new hardware and being a hardware junkie myself, I really can't blame anyone for that.
I gave to Scott because I ran his ROM for quite awhile and it was really stable. Probably because it is stock with the fat trimmed but that met my needs. Later on I hear about all this talk going on about how he's not a real developer and he left.
Then I gave money to bored at least twice, once for his S4 Rom, and once again to help him get a new laptop. Shortly after he vanished for personal reasons. It's probably something big, probably not his fault, bad things happen and sometimes our priorities changes but it seemed that once again I encouraged someone who had to go away.
Lastly, I donated twice to Joel for his S4 ROM and to encourage him to continue developing and we now know what is happening. He doesn't seem to have the time and with the Roms coming out for the GNex and the One X, if I was a developer, I would be all over the new hardware as well.
So those events made me frustrated and I think I managed to p!ss off quite a few people so I'm sorry for that. I tarnished my own reputation because instead of accepting all that, I wanted something for my donations and I got nothing.
I decided to change the way I see things and consider my donations as a contribution to work that was done in the past. I used CleanRom so I donated for that, I used S4 a lot and Bored helped me port his blue theme so that it works with 3.6 Roms, and I donated for that. I didn't really run Joel's ROM a lot because the lack of bluetooth and screen rotation lag was too much for me but still, he put some good stuff together and it was good while it lasted.
So once again, I apologize for anyone I offended or rubbed the wrong way. Donating only to see people vanish got the best of me and I'm paying for it now because of my latest posts.

no hard feelings bro. id feel pretty pissed too if i donated money and it didnt lead to anything. this community, is broken right now. we have about three devs for cdma and 1 gsm left. i want to stay but it seems i cant! im pretty sure im leaving to get a GSM gnex and go to tmobile. its just better for me right now. believe me, THIS IS THE INTERNET!!!! if anyone gets offended, they are p*ssies
I started to think of the fact that the money I donated would have bought me almost a third of a One X at full retail price but developers do release ROMs before getting donations so I'm trying to see it as contribution done in the past, not in the future.
hey man, i'm just as upset as you with the developers leaving. our community really has been shot to hell, and i don't really see it recovering very well, and that sucks. we started off as a small, close, tight-knit community from like weeks before launch date. many of us were familiar faces from the Inc forum, so we were enjoying ourselves. once we got bigger, i guess everything began to get on peoples' nerves: lack of AOSP, RIL, kernel source, ICS not being released, etc etc.
now, we have less than a handful of developers left, as they've all left for the nexus.
hang in there, the source/ update drought cant last forever. If you can make it through the wait, it's inevitable that the combination of the hardware + the price of this phone will bring talent. I wouldn't be surprised if a few of those folks you mention above make their way back here again. Being stuck on 2 year old software isn't really exciting for many devs, but it's where we're at for the time being.
Nice to see that you have a new outlook dude

I like where this thread is going and I agree with the sentiments behind it, hopefully no one will come in here and turn this into a troll-fest.
Personally, I think this is a natural (though unpleasant) thing that's going on. In the forums for my last device, this exact same thing happened - as frustration grew over manufacturer/carrier delays for the next big/promised release and source code, things got bad in the community. It got ugly. Then the release finally came and source finally came and some really good things happened, including CM9. I haven't been back there in a long time so I have no idea what it's like now, but that's the way I left it. I'm hoping once we have source that good things will happen. I believe we'll see some new faces and maybe some old ones.
The one thing that complicates matters in the Rezound forums is the issue of donations (in my opinion). In my old device's forums, a lot of the devs (maybe most) refused to take donations, or at least discouraged donations, and actually it seemed the most talented devs were the ones most likely to discourage/least likely to accept donations. Here, a lot of the devs (most? all?) accept and even encourage donations, in some cases outright asking for them. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I've donated to at least 3 Rezound devs myself, but there are risks that come along with accepting/encouraging donations. The people who donate then expect certain things, expectations are higher, and if you don't deliver or if you leave before delivering, you have to expect some people are going to take it hard. I'm not saying I agree with that, it's just human nature. There is a fine line between donating to encourage someone and outright paying them for an expected outcome.
I don't think I ever posted anything negative towards any dev, and I've never taken sides in the current "war" that's going on. I must admit there is one thing I really don't get in all this, one thing I really would like to post and ask about because I'm honestly confused by it, but I know 100% it would turn into a troll feeding frenzy, so I'm just going to keep it to myself and hope for better days ahead.
Personally I love this phone (aside from battery life) and think it's still better than a lot of devices coming out now. I'd love to get more into the dev game myself if I could just. find. the. frickin. time...
That was long-winded, I apologize...
I thank you all make good points and I feel the same way also and I'm so tired of all the childish stuff that just keeps going on iv been with most these dev's sense(pun intened) the inc and they all are very talented but really don't blame them for leaving whether it be personal or not.on that note thank you to all the modders themers and devs and anyone that's a helper and not a troll

I don't blame people for wanting to go develop for a newer hardware platform, I would do the same and if I could afford it right now, I would buy a GNEX and let Google feed be with updates.
We still love you.
The development section hasn't had anything good in at least a month.
I don't see the rage about the new S3, or Nexus (plus thought nexus was blocked for US sales??). I'm really enjoying the Resound and am having Zero issues at the moment with it. It would be nice to get some of the new updates rolling quicker with the phone, but the amount of work developers have put into the current roms is amazing. They are all very talented people, and there's no possible way to thank them enough for all they've done. I just do really hope some end up trailing back in our direction and bring/breathe more life into this phone..... Particularly Jellybean.

By people playing ball and RUNNING to the newest phone that has better software when we dont get source fast enough all were doing is saying "hey, you can manipulate the market easily, just take too long to update software and we'll just buy the next phone you tell us to buy". We just need to be patient and wait for source, this is a GREAT phone! Just. Be. Patient.

We just need to be patient and wait for source, this is a GREAT phone! Just. Be. Patient.

Let's see VZW/HTC stated this phone officially would have ICS Q1, it is now Q3 and they have yet to deliver. This phone has already passed it's shelf life so I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't see the official ICS/source for another month, or two, or three. It sucks but you just gotta face it, this phone is dead. Great phone with a lot of potential, troll community destroys any hope of AOSP or the improvement of current roms.
The thing is, manufacturers have zero motivation to update the software on their phones because they make no money off of that and have to spend money on development.
If not coming up for an update for the Rezound and putting the latest on the One X, they ensure that anyone who wants the latest android will spend money on a new phone.
Yeah we're rooted and we do have the latest, but despite that, I think we all share that itch to get the newer phone with the slightly better CPU and a little bit more RAM.
It's a fact that faster hardware doesn't always make for a faster phone, the quality of the software running on it makes a huge difference as well. I see the same thing on my rezound, sense launcher has never been smoother while 3rd party launchers like Nova, Apex, Go, have never been slower. Open the app drawer, everything is smooth but flip through screens on the desktop and you get that low framerate feel.
I wouldn't consider the GNEX too old to buy but I'll be enjoying my Rezound until the next phone from Google.

Maybe some people need to change their expectations.
I don't donate for future work. Since it's entirely possible that the dev has run into a creative or technical wall, I think it's an unrealistic expectation. But that's just me.
I donate because I appreciate the work the dev has already done. If he takes the donation as an "attaboy" as inspiration for bigger and better things, I consider that a bonus.
Nilsp's ROMs are just about the only ones I've used since I got my Rezound. I appreciate the consistent quality, that he'll answer a question almost anytime of the day or night without snark, and that his ROMs are in a constant state of improvement. I've bought him at least one beer if not two, and if he can get Sense 4 to run properly, I'll buy him a case.
BTW...Nilsp had to be coaxed into accepting donations. Like many of the devs, his satisfaction seems to come in beating the challenges and the simple thanks the users of his product give him. The rest...beer money.
I think another problem with this community is the sense that Verizon has practically orphaned this phone right out of the gate. It was supposed to be a top of the line phone...by technical standards, it's still one of their best phones eight months out of the gate, which is saying something...but they never promoted it, and the dragging of their feet with the ICS update is simply maddening, given that they implied it would be one of the first to get it.
I like this phone. I'm pretty much stuck with it for another year anyway, but I can't see the advantage to jumping at quad cores, especially since few apps can truly take advantage of the extra cores anyhow.

I agree with you, but not completely. You see, I've noticed two ways of inviting for donations.
1. "If you like my work, please consider donating". That I agree with you, a donation is for past work and no expectations should be assumed on either side. You like the current rom and you want to donate, send a few bucks and enjoy the phone. No one ever said there would be a next version.
2. "Let's get 'x' a phone so that he can develop for the Rezound". This is far different than the first one. This, in simple terms, means "If you buy me a phone, I will release something". Maybe just one Rom supported for a little bit, maybe more, but this DOES imply that if the developer gets his/her new phone, that this person will develop something. This is money for future development.
Going with the second method is risky because it does set an expectation to get something back for getting that person a phone. Those expectations are likely to be different between the developer and people who donated. I am convinced that this is why there is so much friction and frustrated people in the Rezound forums. Different people have different expectations and some people are bound to feel like they deserve more.
I learned my lesson though. Next time someone needs the community to help them get a device, I'll politely pass because this concept of donating for future work is at high risk to cause frustrations.

Nobody bought me a phone. I'm not buying someone else one.
I prefer developers who plan to use their phone and their ROMs as daily drivers...because that's how I use my phone. If I'm helping a dev buy a phone, he's only in it for the challenge. Once he thinks he's met that challenge, he's off looking for a new one...while I've still got a year or more to go on my contract. And all of that presumes we're talking about an ethical developer...one that's not using his buddy's phone to do the work and pocketing the donations. ---NOTE---that is not an accusation pointed at anyone, just a hypothetical.
I'm not the government. I don't pay for future development....because more times than not, it doesn't work out to be much of a bargain for the taxpayer.

Huh?
Nils has been releasing GREAT stuff. Why do folks ignore this super-talented dev?
