Galaxy S2 worth $.01? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

My family and I are in the process of switching to AT&T, we are looking at buying the phones through cartoys.com where the gs2 is only a penny. Do you guys think that is a great deal or should I just cough up the money for the gs3. I know that is probably a dumb question, new specs and all or an old phone. But looking at everything I don't really know if it is truly a good upgrade for two hundred dollars more than a perfectly specd and very excellent phone with by looking at it, has a very strong development section. Are many of you upgraded to S3 or waiting for the next , true upgrade to this amazing phone?

i would get the s3 if i had the money.

There are a few really good devs that are on contract with the S2 for at least another year. So you can at least count on S2 tweaking until then.
Personally i'd wait awhile to upgrade to the S3 to give the devs time to work out all the kinks with bases and int'l ports.

Like stated, if you can get an S3 do it. But the S2 is very much worth a penny. You wont be disappointed.

Yes the s2 is worth it im an iphone convert and got an s2 on trade and im finding it hard to upgrade to the s3 other than the camera..

S2 is the best phone I've ever had. So yes.

I would say, if you want to save money it's worth it to get the S2. But if you want the latest and the greatest and don't mind spending some $$$, then get the S3.
Either that buy the S2 for the penny (keep it as a backup, etc.. play phone) and also get the S3. (This would be my choice).

I personally don't think spending an extra $200 on a slight upgrade is worth it , we have great dev's here a lot of good roms. We don't have lte in my area but honestly I use WiFi most of the time as I think using up my 3 gigs would happen way to quickly with lte anyways. I think it comes down to justifying if $200 is worth slightly quicker processor and slightly larger screen ,lte
Svoice (but there is a usable one you can add to our phone)

Thanks for the input on the s3, now what does everyone think of the skyrocket? I know this is the s2 forum so I can can't somewhat tell what my answer is going to be. cartoys.com is also selling the skyrocket for $50 so that could be a good deal. What I'm thinking the is the display would like better on the s2 since they both have the same resolution but it's smaller on s2 so it would look better, right? And I've heard the exynos processor is better than the Qualcomm one the skyrocket uses. I guess the big think is lte vs Hspa, I know AT&T has great lte but there Hspa isn't that bad either so I don't really think connection matters. Let me know your guys thoughts.

I777 is much better then the skyrocket but if you want lte get the s3.

You're going to hear many opinions, no one but yourself can decide. You can always look online for reviews of different phones. This thread didn't really need to be made

I just upgraded to a.... SGSII!

After debating which phone to go for, I decided on the SGSII. I went to the ATT store yesterday to check out the Vivid and Skyrocket.
The Vivid looks really nice but it feels way too clunky. Big and heavy as I'm already used to Samsung's lightweight and thin phones from my Captivate. That and I don't think I'm too much of a Sense fan. But the phone does look great. $99 is an amazing price too.
The Skyrocket looks quite nice but is also big. My main reason for steering away from this (even though NYC should be receiving LTE 'soon') is the dev community. I know how Samsung and ATT handle updates. As such, the i777 can easily get updates much quicker by grabbing the source for the international SGSII much like the Captivate and Galaxy S. It looks like the Skyrocket has no such luck due to differing hardware.
I am a little bummed that I can't have LTE, the higher resolution in the Vivid and the Dev community that is a associated with the SGSII but I guess the SGSII is still a great decision.
Getting it for $99 (and hopefully a $100 gift card as a reward) doesn't hurt either

Both phones are awesome. Vivid definitely is an ounce heavier, but I'd say that it's totally worth it friend. I got it for 200 from best buy, don't know how everyone is getting for 100 .
If you can post the link to 100 bucks for vivid then I can make best buy do a price match...

The AT&T store by me has it for $99. If you search on ATT for zip code 11375, it should come up with that price.
I think it depends on markets. Some LTE or soon to be LTE markets have the Skyrocket for $149 and Vivid for $99.
By the way, what are the download speeds like for SGSII and the Vivid?
I'm in Boston LtE marker and the price still shown 250 for the Skyrocket. Hmmm

Yeah, ATT is offering a $100 discount on both phones, from what I've read. Maybe the discount isn't available in your area?
I wonder if there's anyway to check where the discount is valid? I've seen it varying for many different market areas.

Should I do this trade?

Sell the iPhone 4S and buy the galaxy s2. I was able to sell my 4S for 580 and I often got 550 offers. I bought my Galaxy S 2 at 400 bucks.
i would trade it if I were you....unless you want to try to sell the iphone. it should sell for quite a bit.
Just make sure that the GS2 isnt scratched/dented/chipped and in perfect condition... otherwise sell your 4S and buy a brand new GS2.
Yeah the guy said its a few weeks old, and it had a screen protector + case on first day so no damage. Which I believe as my 4S is from launch and also not even a scratch even though its all glass.
That is true. I put my 4S on ebay actually with a buy it now of 550 and nothing 4 days later =/. Also they don't even sell the SGS II here (washing it away with the LTE markets coming and the skyrocket). Also having to go through paypal and ebay taking money from me selling, and then buying is kind of a drag. Along with the fact that I would need a phone right away, don't have any other AT&T phones to use in the mean-time. I think I'm just going to do the trade, the guy lives close to me and were meeting at an AT&T store in order for me to get a regular sim as the iphones use micros. Can't wait to root the hell out of it.

Thats what she said!
But seriously... if you cant wait, or dont want to do the Ebay/Paypal thing, then trading is a great way. Also, you can try craigslist... no Ebay/Paypal involved there (I advise to meet in a high-populated area... like in front of a Target or Best Buy).
I actually meant to write craigslist in the initial post lol my bad about that. And were meeting at an AT&T store. Guy seems very genuine so I think it should go well. I need to get the standard SIM for the GSII anyway so I told him to meet an at&t store which is about 5 minutes away from me so no worries there.

Sounds good. Good idea about meeting in front of AT&T. I always advise people to meet in a highly populated area if meeting a stranger... no need to create a possibility for a dangerous situation.
Sounds like you will have your phone soon. Welcome to the GS2... you wont go back.
I went to iOS from android, biggest regret. the 4S was so hyped, and the death of SJ made me want it even more considering how poetic it all was. But now a month later I realize that it isn't for me and that flippin' grid of icons ughh
i love my s2, i came from apple so if that helps, if you want a phone that is simple and limited apple is for you, if you want a beautiful open ended phone that you can custimize this is for you. P.s. just sell the iphone u will make so much more, then buy the s2 they are going for 350-400
UPDATE- Got the phpne WOOO!!!! Guy actually gave it to me already rooted running unNamed v1.3.1. Is this a good ROM or is there better out there? Thanks

I've considered jumping over to the 4S for a very long time. I have an IPad 2 that I love just because it was free and its my college book. I think that is enough Apple in my life, sticking with SGS II for awhile, at least until SGS III hits the market.
I say sell the 4s. There are numerous people internationally that will buy the 4s at an inflated price. Use that to buy a new GS2. Also, watch out for eBay scams. A lot of users with addresses in Nigeria are creating fake invoices anf stealing people's items.

That was a good trade...... enjoy the phone. It was nice that he had it rooted already!

haha I would have tried to sell for more and them bought the s2, as far as roms I am on checkrom revohd thanks to hellraiser and entropy and loving it. the first rom I have actually settled on since getting this phone but your on a great one too. The best thing is there are plenty of options now. enjoy!
Arguably it being pre-rooted and already having UnNamed installed could be worth the money he missed out on. Still, welcome to Android. Converted from the 3GS to an Inspire 4G to a GSII. Both better than my iPhone ever was.

Choosing between this and the Skyrocket

Hello. I have signed a two year contract with AT&T (4gb data yaaay...) and got the HTC Titan since im a WP7 lover, but after a week im not sure i can justify a long term agreement on the platform so im gonna use my 30 day windows to swap it. Since i know ill get bored of iOS its out, so its between the GS2 or the Skyrocket since the Vivid is somewhat laggier and locked bootloader. Im leaning towards this due to the Exynos vs Snapdragon debacle....
Question, Is it worth a contract nowadays or is there a better choice? I wished the Galaxy Nexus arrived before my 30 days was up but its not happening. Please share thoughtz

If you're in a LTE area and don't mind having a higher battery drain due to 4g then go with the Skyrocket. Of the two I think that the GS2 is the better choice but then again I couldn't take advantage of the 4g where I am so the skyrocket would be pointless.
Wow I'm sick of seeing these threads.
Only you can decide what is going to be best for you. If you're in LTE and use the phone for surfing, ect, get the ****rocket. If you play games or watch movies, sgs2 is the way to go.
Do a search and you'll see all the pro/con thread already out there.
Best bet is to go into a store and play with both phones. If you still cant decide after that, then specwise the GS2 is a better phone than the Skyrocket... so let that be the thing to tip the scales.

It is not entirely false. In my area (Northern California), the AT&T corporate stores and authorized dealers no longer carry the original S2, only the Skyrocket. I got mine from a local RadioShack. I guess it is because they are nationwide retailer and have their own stock. The only way to get the S2 from AT&T directly in my area is to buy from their online store.
99 bucks at Costco for an S2 and tax only on 199.99. 117 out the door!

I got my GS2 on monday (I ordered online) I right away noticed a dead pixel. I went into my local ATT store and they didnt have any GS2s in stock. They checked 3 or 4 other stores in the area and none of them had them in stock. The manager told me that they were no longer keeping them in stock because they are now pushing the skyrocket. She told me she thinks they were even asked to send the GS2s back.. So while the phone may not be at end of life ATT has decided to "forget" about the GS2 and push the skyrocket since they are pushing their new LTE network
Just my thoughts/experience on the subject
Sorry for posting another thread on this, I was reading the other topic posted here....
but since the thread was bumped again, let me ask. Does the SGS2 have more dev support than the SR? My main concern is being left behind too soon, and since the GS2 is closest to the OG, i think id get custom and official ICS before SR imo. plus i cant get over the crappy Snapdragon cpu it uses as well since im anal about those things and thats why i basically swore off htc androids because of it.
here is the kicker... i DO live in a LTE area haha, desicions, decisions...

I live in an LTE area (They just launched in NYC) and I chose the GS2 over the skyrocket for a few reasons
1. I had the bigger sprint GS2 and I actually prefer the 4.3 form factor
2. The CPU/GPU is better in the GS2
3. LTE is new and this is their first generation device I'd rather wait until it matures more (in handsets and network) than to jump on it now.
4. There is a lot more dev support for the GS2 and since it's so close to the International version it means we pretty much get whatever they get (just a tad bit after)
Now I did say I preferred the 4.3 form factor and I do, but after using the 4.52 sprint GS2 I kind of got use to it and the 4.3 felt tiny (even though it's really not THAT much smaller) so it took a little adjusting.
I was in the ATT store the other day when I was trying to exchange my GS2 with the dead pixel. I played with a SR and I can say you can definitely see a difference in snappiness when they are side by side. The Gs2 just seems more smooth and fluid. If I didn't have them side by side I prob wouldnt have noticed a difference but you most certainly notice a difference when they are side by side.
In the end for me the reasons to go with the GS2 outnumbered the reasons to go with the SR which the only reason I could think of is that it's LTE

Well, I DID physically go into two local ATT stores this past week, and neither had any s2s nor any accessories for it, in addition to being told by the employee that they were obsolete in their system. Yes, you can get them online through att, but not at the stores around here. Lte has not been launched in my market yet (SF bay area) but there are pockets of cells in testing, so it will be coming at some point.

Anyone gonna upgrade to a skyrocket II HD?

Just saw this today...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/...kyrocket-hd-coming-to-atandt-1-5ghz-dual-cor/
I think I may make the switch if it is half as good as I hope. Hopefully they learned from their flaws with the skyrocket.
Nope. I'm staying put with the sgsII!
Sent from my AT&T cellular device.
Just curious as to what makes you say that? No interest in the LTE, bigger screen or new form factor?
Depends on what the Processor is and what OS version it will come with.
i'm actually quite interested in the new skyrocket HD.
However, since there's SGS2 and skyrocket on the market for AT&T already, i doubt that many developers would make the jump and support skyrocket HD.
so i'm just gonna stick with my i777 because i love the developers here
Even if i could, no for the sole reason that it's most likely got a snapdragon chip

That too is a huge fear I have and is really my only major drawback to the device.
Now that Orlando will have LTE this is very tempting, but then again I am having way too much fun with the SGS2 to even think about replacing it.
Maybe if they announce it will have the dual core 1.5ghz exynos processors I'll give it another thought.
Samsung is going overboard. They should have released one galaxy s2 with their lte exynos and have a super amoled plus HD, THAT'S innovation, this is BS and gives Android a bad name for fragmentation

Isn't the GSIII also set to release this spring/summer as well lol?
If it's Crapdragon - hell no.
If it's Exynos - tempting, but I've already purchased one out-of-cycle upgrade, don't need the extra 300 MHz, and LTE will be worthless for at least 2-3 more years here.

2-3 years? How do you figure that?
I get an upgrade once a year with at&t, I got the gs2 the day it came out....so i still have about 7months left untill I can get my upgrade, by that time something bigger and better will be around....if not, i will for sure look into this phone.
im really thinking about it... the screen res was my only complaint with the s2 and now i see hope in the future!!!!
oh and i live in a LTE area
I used my wife's upgrade to get the S2 and i am available for a upgrade next month... i might sell my iphone 4 and S2 and take the upgrade... ill have to play with one first. My wife loves her phone so im set
as far as I know, the Exynos doesnt support LTE yet.
unless that has changed in the last couple months?
I'm sticking with mine. I live in a city that probably won't get LTE for another year or more. By that time, something else will be out and I can get an upgrade then.
I love my GS2 and battery life has been fantastic. Although I'd like a higher resolution screen, it's not enough to make me want to switch to the Skyrocket HD.
i live about 15 minutes north of NYC and LTE stops there so I'm just outside the LTE area. I wont be worrying about LTE devices anytime soon lol
At this point I will just wait for the SGSIII

Best way to purchase international phone to the states advice?

I think I'd prefer the International version instead of the S4 processor. I'm mostly if not always on Wi-Fi so I don't think 4G LTE will matter much to me.
I'm wondering what others have done in the past and am curious about your experience on buying international phones? Did you guys wait a few months for the price to go down? Where did you purchase your international version of your phone? Etc.
Any advice would be great. Thank you.

I have purchased two SGS IIs and my Note USED from US buyers after they had been around a few months. I would not be considered an"early adopter" by any stretch. More of a "wait and see" who is unhappy with their device and wants to sell. I usually buy when the price hits $150 - $200 below retail new.
I don;t worry about warranties because I am going to void it anyway if I purchased new.
Seems this one will have a few more available. LOL I like it and will lilkely get one later this Spring or early Summer. Development will be in full force and the ROMS should stabilize and the major issues will be resolved .
Not until a device gets in the MAS market do the warts show up. Samsung cannot possibly beta test like thousands of early adopters.
My advice would be WAIT....and see how the people who LIKE it now will feel about it after a few months and What developers develop for it. .
Don't be swayed by those who hate the "design" Use your phone from the inside out not the outside in. I ended up with a White Note because it was available and priced right and hated how attention getting it was and skinned it with a dark decal. Made it look less obtrusive.
Personally I think its better to wait a couple of months for the price to go down. Money isn't something we should spend so lightly, especially on a phone that will be as capable as others.
$1 gets you a reply
Also wait for people to start posting problems with their screens like the Note which was a huge headache.

In my experience, eBay is overpriced for international version. Craigslist is cheaper but unlikely you find an international version. I never tried buying from overseas websites.
I'm lucky enough to visit Hong Kong every summer. Probably pick up s3 there. Though the prices are high I might have to wait... (expecting $600 s2 was about that when I went last year) Annoyed it might not work with T-Mobile though.
