[Q] Problem With MicroSd Card....limited space - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hello. Well I just rooted my 16 gig Nook Tablet. THe instructions said to write the img onto a micro sd card of at least 2 gigs. Problem is, the instructions didn't mention that after flashing(or burning or whatever it's called) the img file onto the microsd card that it would lose space :crying:. My 32gig card now only says about 2 gigs. I was wondering if anyone can help me undo this? Sorry if its been asked already. Couldnt really think of a way of searching this problem without a lengthy paragraph. Thanks in advance for any help. And please, please help.

Basically the card takes the size of the burned image. The nook color dudes actually have images of different sizes (2gb, 4gb, 8gb, 16gb, 32gb) that allow you to burn the proper image size to the proper sized card and keep the extra space.
What you need to do now is either expand the card (this will allow you to access the rest of the card while keeping the burned image on there as well) or simply reformat it, which will result in the card being restored to its full size. There are guides around for both methods but basically search for either "expand sd card or format sd card."
The key part is, your card is not permanently small, so don't worry.

The partitions on the SD card cannot be changed under Windows, however, there is a nice Linux tool available (GPartet), which can be used to expand the card to its original size.

in windows you can repartition easily, you need to use this
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
and just either expand the initial partiion or make another partition with the rest of the space

formatting mmc

can anyone please tell me how to format mmc card for xda...there's 3 options in win xp ...fat32....fat...ntfs....i cant format it from the xda , keep getting error code 31.....an error occurred while formatting the storage card folder...........thanks
Try formatting to Fat or Fat 32, however if the xda wont format it there may be a problem, make sure the "lock" switch is in the off position. I have had a problem with sd cards before, what I did was a sd backup from the xda, it then seemed to work ok, just deleted the backup and it worked ever after.
theres no lock switch on the mmc card...i've tried storage tools and flash format...the card must be buggered
i have a different problem, but im sure its connected to the formatting somehow! my card only fills up HALF way!
there is 40% more room availble, all scans prooves this, yet i cant add anything to it, im thinking, its the way its formated, was there a 'directory' limit to how many files that can exist in root?
and wasnt it related to the type of formatting? so my question is...
which format/cluster/ect... is best to fully use a 256 card? and 512/1G.?
Hello,
I actually started a topic last week concerning the same thing. i'm copying bits and pieces of it here; it also helps address your concern about which format to use and the sd card limitations. the first point below address which format you should use for the sd card; in this case use FAT. by the way, i use an sd-card reader (usb plugged) to format the card; it shows up as "removable disk e" in my laptop's window's explorer.
1) i'm using a 512 mb card; i was having some difficulty because the memory of the card would only go up to around 300. at first i thought there was a problem with the card itself so i had to constantly erase the contents to make mp3s, files, pics, mpegs, etc fit. then i stumbled upon the pc command for formatting disks; there were 3 options to format the sd card: FAT, NTFS and FAT32. when i used fat32; the behavior was the same and the memory usage would only go up to 300 max. when using ntfs; my xda2 refused to recognie the card (it wouldn't show up in the explorer app). when i formatted using FAT, everything was great. i can now use the sd card to it's limits and am no longer restricted to the 300-mb trouble i was having.
question: what's the difference in the 3 formats? i don't really know but obviously using FAT format was the best thing to do, but what's with the other formats?
2 cents worth.
cheers mates

thanks Robson...but i have sent to back for a replacement....i tried it in my reader but the pc could not see the sd card...so i went out and bought a 128mb card while i wait for the new one to come....had no problems with the 128 worked straight away
thanks for the tip - from now on FAT is to be my solution
one more thing to add, I do have 256MB SD card on my XDA I and WM2003, ver 4.0.21
I can use my 256MB card to the full limit, the card has been formatted with CnetX format utility (www.cnetx.com) with FAT16 and FAT32 and apart from the fact that content has been missing from time to time, so I had to re-load the files ... when I locked the card, everything is fine now

monika
today I have tested sandisk 512MB SD card ....
I am allowed to fill it up to the full limit of roughly 484MB
I am curious about the other thing .... buying 512MB SD card for its prce it's almost a rip-off and you get only 484MB in return, I remember old times back with IPAQ + PCMCIA sleeve with inserted flash card 1280MB of sandisk - the size written on the back of the card WAS EXACTLY matching what PPC2002 was showing .... 1280MB
to me it seems like either different "disk geometry" or disk format - can anyone explain it to me pls
regards,
monika

[Q] cm7 sd image too big for 4g uSD card?

Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final.img is 3,974,103,040 bytes, the card I have formats to 3,956,789,248 using partition wizard. Thus, win32diskimager fails due to a slightly larger image (about 17MB).
Is there a way to resize Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final.img to make it fit? Any other method than to use a different card? I would suspect the original SD card was just imaged directly and it was a bit bigger.
I had the same problem when I planned to give the SD version a test run. I tried to write the image to my 4GB cards. The image was 3.70GB and my SD card capacities were 3.69GB. Not sure if Celtic and the guys know this or not.
SDFormatter by Trendy (a small, free app) has a function to try to reallocate lost space when formatting. That may be worth a try. Also writing the image to a freshly formatted disk with a regular card reader may help as the Nook automatically adds a number of directories as soon as the card is inserted.

[Q] Move to bigger SD card with Dual boot nook Tablet

I Hope I post this to the correct place. I have a 8gb Nook Tablet. I am doing the dual boot with mod 7 on a 8g msd card. I would like to move all the info to a 16g msd card but I have no idea how to do that. Can someone help me with this ?
the best way i can think of is to use dd command to create an image of your entire sdcard and then burn it to the new one, so you keep all the settings, apps, etc.
Then you can use a partition software to extend the last partition of your new 16gb sdcard all the way to the right so you use all the space available.

As Veronica already mentioned, the correct way is to burn an image
On Windows use a 'win32DiskImager' to make an image of your existing 8gb Card. It has an GUI and it is easy to use. On Linux dd command, if you need the exact command, you can search the forum or ask.
Then put the 16GB card and burn that image on it.
If all is correct you will have 4 partitions (or as many partitions as the 8gb Card).
Next step will be to expand/resize the last partition with 8 GB. Before that, make a copy of the file from the last partition, just in case.
On windows you can do that with PartitionManager or Partition Wizard Mini -> which is free.

I had the same frustration and figured there was some magic I didn't understand re: image files. I "believe" that the image you select with the windows disk imager (Win32DiskImager.exe), which I believe is named cwm_sd_flashing_boot.img controls how much free space is left. In other words, that image is only around 70 MB or so, and when you transfer the image to the USB, that's all you get.
I was using a 2G SD, so no big loss, but when I went to place the .zip file for CM9, there wasn't enough free space available. What I did was copied the CM9 zip and gapps zip to yet another SD, booted up with the original 70 MB SD and then popped in the larger SD when asked to select the zip to flash in CWM. It worked.
Since then, I realized that all you have to do is format your larger SD as a bootable FAT32 drive, ie, set the boot and lda flags, then copy "all" the files that were in the original SD drive. After trying to puzzle it out for two days, I got it working tonight.
For me, I just formatted a 16 GB SD as bootable and then added all the zip files I'd need, and will use that SD in the future for CM9 and other upgrades.
As far as how to make a bootable drive, I use linux (and dual boot windows 7) and used the gparted program as recommended by indirect. It allows you to set the boot and lda flags which I guess is all you need to make the drive bootable. I have no idea how to get windows to do that without some other app. You can always create a gparted live CD and boot into it.
Good luck.
PS The files I found I needed on the SD to make it boot are
boot.img
flashing_boot.img
MLO
u-boot.bin
...as well as Gapps_and_root.zip and any other zips you want to load.
I'm not sure of MLO and u-boot.bin, but I put them in and it works.
PPS I also found that if you leave the USB connected to your computer, it will boot right into the SD. If not, you probably have to do the power and N buttons at the same time thing.
Recovering SD Capacity
I had the same problem, but then I read somewhere that if you just use the NT clear SDCARD / dismount while the MicroSD is still in the NT (of course), it will revert back to it's original capacity.
Worked for me...I can look through the menus and get step by step instructions if you can't follow the crappy way I described it above.
Lol, thanks for the advice guys! I'll try it, hopefully Im not screwed

[Q] Boot system file to switch microsd mount with internal memory

A long time ago I had edited a file that is read on boot, in that file is written which one of the two 'partition' has to be mounted as what.
Basically, my 32GB microsd is seen as the internal memory of the device (which would be 12 GB), and the other one as micro sd. The result is that most application would go to the microsd by default, using thus 32GB for apps instead of 12GB.
Well, I would like to go back and have no clue what file I had edited, and cannot find the old thread on XDA....
can someone help me?
This is because my microsd is failing. Changed with a new one, and now it is failing again. I suppose my phone has become a 'micro sd destroyer'. Cannot do anything about it, so better to use the internal memory instead of the card for main use....until I can fix it. So how do I switch back to normal mounting (micro sd as micro sd and internal memory as internal memory and not switched up) ?
up ?
fixed. closed.
