[Q] Microusb Pinout on S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone confirm is the pinout of the Galaxy S3 Microusb is the same as the S2.
I would like to make a cable using a 365k resistor to trigger Car Mode, Charge the phone and send Audio out on D- & D+. I know this worked on the S2, I am assuming it will for the S3 as well, but wanted confirmation.
Thanks!
(Heres the S2 cable link I am refering to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395173&page=2)

Not sure about this but I read that the S2 Micro-USB Jig doesn't work with the S3 so this to me would imply something changed and so pinouts 'may' differ.
Hopefully someone else knows the answer for you.

They're the same, the car mode cable I made works when I plug it into the S3

I dunno who told you hhis, but the same jig works across all Samsung Galaxy devices including the S3.
Some manufacturers use ****ty lowcost resistors with a high tolerance factor to which the s3 simply doesnt react but my homemade 301kOhm 1%tolerance jig works bust fine.
Btw one of the pins for the jig to work -the pin 5 - is never used in data cables.
The pinout is the same as alway and is a standarized MicroUsb-B female plug.
Only the MHL (hdmi) link which is also included in the same plug had it's pinout changed from S2

My jig for sgs2 doesnt fit in my sgs3.
No iead if it work just simply wont go in :\
Anyone know wo ti fix a ptoblem like that?

[Q] How does a USB Jig work?

My question is, how does a USB Jig work?
Why does this small cut-off/altered piece of a USB cable do what it does?
It's a micro usb head with a 301k resistor between some of the pins which makes the bootloader reset the counter, theres loads of threads about this.

This isn't a thread asking about what the hardware is, the question is, why does it work? What's so special about this 301k resistor that makes the unit go into download mode and reset the counter?
NOOB question. Does anyone know if the USB jig for the original SGS works for the SGSII?...

yep bro, it works.
if i helped, use the thanks buttom
I'm in the preocess of making my own jig, just picked up the resistors today (300k and 1k since maplin suck and dont carry a clean 301k)
My guess is that the jig works by sending a low voltage signal down a normally disused USB line.
USB 2.0 heads have a fifth 'unused' pin, specificly for manufacturers of devices to add in thier own proprietary signal line. By shorting the ground and a signal pin, via the resistor, you probably trigger a reset signal to the phones 'bios' rom.
And why 301k ohm? Probably, originally, to make it harder for non-samsung personel to 'guess' the correct trigger voltage. It could have easily been 235kOhm or 20M Ohm or anything.
This is conjecture honestly, but it makes sense to me.

IIRC, the resistance is across the two USB data pins, at least for some functions, e.g. determining if you're plugged into an AC charger. There are several significant resistance values in the addition to the 301k ohm you cite. Other values will put the SGS2 into dock mode, or put the device into MHL mode, where the micro USB connector is repurposed to send HD video & audio to a display, either a MHL-compliant device or a HDMI device after going through the MHL-to-HDMI adapter.

HDMI MHL Cable?

Hi guys I purchased this mhl cable
http://www.ebay.it/itm/160781902835...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648#ht_3437wt_1165
Dosen't work
the tv did not see anything
I plugged the charger on adapter HDMI, but the phone ONLY charging...
Why?
Designed for GS2, thus will not work with GS3.
Pretty obvious given the listing title.

For some reason or another, the S3 has a different cable requirement to the S2 and pretty much all previous phones. This means that cables designed for other phones (like the one you bought, which was designed for the S2) won't work.
There will be third party MHL cables for the S3 out soon enough I'm sure.
I read in some review that it uses MHL ver 2.0
I think that's why it doesn't work with older SGS2 cables.

[Q] MHL cable and OTG cable

If you connect the MHL cable to the device and the OTG cable to the MHL cable the device can't detect the OTG cable.
How can I make this work? I've seen videos in youtube that they connect their device to the TV at the same they have USB bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected.
Anyone tried using MHL cable and OTG cable at the same time?

According to some of wikipedia entries it should be possible to use mhl and usb otg at the same time with a 11-pin mhl-hdmi adapter.
Wikipedia said:
11-pin MHL-USB Connector
The Samsung Galaxy S III uses a connector that is similar to the original 5-pin MHL-USB connector, but it uses 11-pins in order to achieve a few functional improvements over the 5-pin design.
It supports the use of USB and MHL simultaneously (note that the new Samsung 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter also has a USB-OTG port).
Samsung’s Galaxy S III can power the MHL-HDMI adapter. Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality.

Here you go.
So, it should work. But I couldnt make it work at the moment
I also got one of these 11-pin connectors and like it seems only the S3 has these adapters, so why the **** doesnt it work?? :/
I already asked sammy on facebook, just wondering what they will answer^^
Hopefully we will have some pos. results, dude.
cheers

How would that work since the micro USB connection on the mhl cable is for power / charger?
In those YouTube videos is it possible that they have the mhl cable connected to the TV and power source, and the keyboard and mouse connected wirelessly via Bluetooth?
Confused because you said USB Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. From what I know they aren't USB.

Samsung should eventually release a dock to use both so unless someone figures it out first you'll just have to wait, because if it just took an 11 pin USB cable someone would have got it working already and we'd know about it, so I reckon it might have some extra circuitry to make it recognised by the phone.
Guys, as I already posted, the connector has 11 pins, so it should be possible to use OTG and MHL features at the same time. thats the only reason sammy brought out this connector and also cause of incompability with the 5-pin connector.
So they should bring the f*ck out somethin for the phone that activates this feature.
And a big problem I have with my mhl-connector is that I cant configure the output
on my 2 TVs at home I get 1080i, (both only 1080i capable), but the picture is kinda oversized so I cant see 100% percent of the picture, only 90% or smt like this.
But the funny part is, that I get on my 1680x1050p PC monitor only 576p screen, what actually sucks So it would be awesome if I could choose the resolution I want to have. But I guess its a thing of the connector (maybe it choose the resolutions iself).
cheers
so the one in the videos using keyboard and mouse are bluetooth thru phone?

They should do iut fast. I'm waiting so hard for everything get connected with my Phone. It will be awsome if I don't need my Pc anymore.
To use the MHL cable you must have power connected to the adapter.

That's damn funny because I have wanted to know whether that would work as well, lol.
Did seriously consider trying but as I was on holiday if they broke, I wouldn't be able to get replacement so didn't try it.
In theory I would think it could work, but only if you could somehow wire in power to the hdmi adapter as it appears to need that to run the hdmi aswell as provide power to the phone, at least enough that once the usb adapter tries to demand power to run it isn't enough for the phone to output.
As to whether this is just a a stupid guess and assumption of how the devices and being a noob, I don't know.
If you can get a micro female to male adapter with a usb splitter for power then technically I can't see why it wouldn't work if the limitations are physical as oppose to software based (whole other issue I have no clue about).
EDIT: Wow, when I started that post no one had replied, err, seems a little redundant now, lol. My bad. Also, this 5 minute wait to point this out, have seemed really long...
guess we'll have to wait for that dock.

how to find out if usb port is defect?

Hi guys,
I've just received a - what looks pretty brand-new - S2 here naked and without its back cover. It's branded.
I also own a rooted i9001 (S plus) with themes and stuff. Still works like a charm.
So the S2.... I am pretty sure I can use same usb cable from the S plus and also the charger (Samsung Travel adapter 5.0V=0,7A) that both are working fine with the S plus.
However, usb with the S2 PC isn't recognizing phone, no matter what I tried. Only connection possible is via Kies (only wifi) and not explorer
The charger isn't recognized by phone either. I'm not sure if the USB port is dead because JIG tool is working. The battery I have is some Chinese one with own charger. The I read the S2 needs more power.
Suggestions anyone?
Thanks.

What do you mean? The phone charges but with charge rates limited by PC USB port instead of AC wall plug? Or doesn't it charge at all with the charger?
Or: how do you mange to charge the phone?

Hi, thanks for looking into my prob.
No, it doesn't charge when connected to PC via USB. The charger doesn't work with phone directly, no.
I bought the replacement battery off ebay and with it came a battery charger (wall plug). So battery can be charged aside from phone.
Unfortunately, I don't have any friends with original S2 accessories to test.
But why does the Jig work (if the USB port were broke)?

The Jig does not use all pins of the USB connector. Basically the Jig is a 300k resistor connected to the GND (5) and ID(4) pin of the USB connector. The pins used for charging are GND(5) and VCC(1). A bold guess would be that the VCC pin of your phones USB connector does not work.
You should consider buying a replacement flex board on ebay. It is very cheap ($10 to $16 I believe) and you should manage to install it yourself.

There could be Two Reasons Your Device's Micro USB Port is Broken Something.

Just to let you know. I got new usb board, exchanged old one (that was clearly water damaged) and the phone now works like a charm.
OT: I've also noticed this trend on Ebay for people to buy non-functioning or damaged S2s. From the guides on youtube I can see exactly why.
However, it's getting pretty ridiculous now that non-functioning S2s with broken screens fetch as much as € 200??!!! I mean, come on!

How to turn on OTG

Hello,
I bought an OTG cable(cheap one, not the genuine), and I tried to plug a USB flash drive ,and a USB mouse, and a USB keyboard, but nothing happens.
Do I need to turn it on somewhere? because I didn't find an option to do so.
Also, I have problems with the micro-USB port itself, so far, only 1 charger is charging my galaxy s3, I don't know why, but other chargers do nothing when I plug them to my galaxy s3, but only the particular charger I grabbed from my tablet.
So, what is the problem? the OTG cable, the micro usb port, or I simply need to activate OTG somehow?
Thanks

Btw, where I work, there is a lab that replaces electronic components from PCB's, so I was thinking of buying a replacement charging port and maybe they can solder it (I've seen how they do it, it's a matter of seconds-minutes), but I remember that the galaxy s3 has different pins somewhere, I remember it has 11 pins compared to 5 pins (am I right?) so will I need a different micro-usb port for the galaxy s3 right? (or the 11 pins are somewhere else?)
