ICS Radio Vs GB Radio - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi Guys I just got the OTA this moring for ICS and ive noticed that reception is not very good. With GB It was amazing for me. And im not talking BARS im talking about TRUE signal. Sometimes I have no data, and no 3G, Or signal Period in spots where I had with GB.
Can I go back to the GB radio and use it on ICS? If so can someone tell me where I can get the radio and flash it?
Thanks!

My radios are still the same. Strong as ever. Wi-Fi range is great too.

Mine signal went to crap too. At work I get 5 bars on GB and now I get only 2 on ICS. That's wack
Droid RAZR Maxx

One thing they DID do when developing ICS was to make the signal meter more accurate. Apparently, it was reading too high before because of the algorithm used. I don't have the link handy, but it was discussed here recently.
And, in the case of MANY updates like this... sometimes a therapeutic hard reset is needed to shake off any residual file issues from the old OS. My tablet needed that when it got it's ICS update.

My lte and phone signal has been great today! I was having issues with my data dropping consistently on .211. Then again right now I'm in arkansas instead of dallas so there's probably far fewer people on the lte towers here. We'll see tomorrow night when I get home.

Im not talking about how the bars read. My actual SIGNAL is worse. I cant get ANY signal in spots where I had FULL signal before.
Anyone have the GB radio?

There was an article published from google on this. ICS reports the signal differently. It reports it more accurately. Your signal is the same. If you THINK it's different it is strictly placebo effect.

Bad radios on razr or normal?

My razr has problems in the signal department. It will take forever to switch to 4g or wont switch at all in well known 4g areas. Also the hotspot won't connect to anything.. Furthermore, my speed test results are not normal. I get about a 400+ ping and very bad downlink and uplink on 4g. Where i get, 45 ping and 32mbps down & 11mbps up on a rezound right next to it... So bad phone? bad radios? Or common with the razr?
Sorry for typos.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Sounds like you need to update the Radio, mine was having 3G and Wireless issues as well until I updated it. However the Hotspot seems to have gotten worse, it has problems establishing a connection, and when it actually does connect, the internet fails to work.
I'm hoping ICS comes with a new Radio and resolves these issues.
Well i guess i have a bad razr, since no one else chimed in..

Just to rule out any software issues, I would do a complete factory reset & then flash the .744 fxz file & take the ota to .748. See if that changes any of the problems. If you notice any improvement, flash the .173 leak because it comes with the latest radio & see if that fixes things. What have you got to lose?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
My razr does not have the issues you mention. Most of the time I get great 4g. The only problems I find are switching between 3g and 4g is sometimes a little squirrelly.

Definitely try the 6.12.173 leak. It fixes a lot of radio issues, especially 3G/4G transition

Tried the methods above and even tried the moto app on the market. Same results . :-(

The leaked update for 6.12 fixed a lot of the data connectivity issues. Update it and that should fix it.

Signal issues DX2

I have a dx2 with cm7 and have been having signal issues, only with 3g no cell issues. The signal strength stays above -80 dbm most of the time, while my dads hunderbolt hangs around -63dbm and we have a cell tower in sight of us, has anyone here found a way to remedy this other then getting a new phone?
Sent from my MB870 using XDA
Has it been a recent issue? Ive noticed on my DX2CM7 the past couple days that my 3G has been cutting out and the speed is VERY slow. On average today im getting about 32kB/s down and 120kB/s up.
Im lucky to get that good of speed, its been on and off not to bad. Ive been noticing its been alot worse lately.

I applied some mods I found and the 3g works allot better even though I still get a bad signal.

I never had any issues with the mods on rc0 but rc1 came out and i had to flash it, now im thinking bout heading back to eclipse and the lovely poison green for awhile

There's an app on google play called 3g/4g speed optimizer, I have it set on little fast and it has given a bit more speed. It does consume more battery and get a little hotter though but thats only when downloading or browsing the web.

It's an ICS thing. The new update messed with our signal. The only way to fix it is to S-Off and go back to Gingerbread.

I use to get full five bars at home using GB, after updated to ICS (SuperSayain rom) I pretty much only getting 3 bars. What I did was in the mobile network setting, changed mode from auto to WCDMA only and so far i've been getting pretty much 5 bar most of the time with occasionally dropped down to 4. hope this works for you too.
I am also having this strange issue. So is reverting to GB the only way or can you just flash the gb radio? Anybody know anymore about this??
Same issue here. At home used to get full 5 bars, now 3 sometimes 4, which is fine as I am usually on WiFi anyway. Problem is I had great signal all throughout my daily commute to work to where there is sections of my drive that I have no signal. Before in that area it would revert to EDGE from 4G and mine is set to auto.
Just believe like everyone else mentioned that it is the ICS radio. Hopefully an update will fix it

No. And to the people talking about modems and odin and.. yea, no. We don't have modems to flash, and odin is just for samsung devices. Until now we couldn't flash a radio if we WANTED to.
You know the iPhone's fix when people were talking about how bad the signal was for the iPhone4? They had been boosting the REPORTED signal strength. So did HTC, so did Samsung, so did.. all of them. You'd drop a call when it showed you had GOOD signal.
Not a single person has posted about having ACTUAL worse issues. The OP said he can make calls and talks about how many bars.
Apple's opinion:
We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.
Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars.

People here are having the OPPOSITE problem, it LOOKS like you should have an issue, and you don't.. but people keep posting about it even tho there hasn't been any issues.
This is the ONLY person who had actual signal issues(Weird Interference/Reception Call Issues on my Amaze) I have seen since ICS dropped, and it turned out to be a hair on the contact for the antennae. Read his thread, he methodically checked quality and could answer basic questions - and then he fixed the actual problem.
Edit: I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if someone is ACTUALLY having problems, they actually can't make calls, drop calls where they didn't before, etc.. then there is probably a problem that can be fixed. But unless you are having those issues it is likely that the signal strength you're seeing is more accurate(EXACTLY like the apple quote I put above), they are just doing a better job of SHOWING the actual signal. Which is good, no unexpected dropped calls or BS.

Don't know if that's the case because when I so connect its fast. Just as fast as the first day of the month. I do have the 5gb plan and have never hit it. Been close but never hit it. I'm going to call just in case. You do have a good point.
Do a speedtest. If its 60 kb/s and steady, or something similar, that's your issue

Any noticeable improvements with 214/215 leaks?

I see threads on how to flash it but I really wanna know if anybody's who's flashed either of these leaks notice any improvements over the 211 ICS OTA.

I just flashed so I cannot be too judgmental, but my phone now stays on 4g with 3 bars, when it would switch between marginal 4g and 3g before. 4g is just ramping up in our area, so I can hope things will only get better. I can't comment on battery life this soon after the flash.

Cool. More feed back will help too. I mostly use 3G to save data and stay under the cap. But lately my wifi been choppy and i notice lag here and there. Also have some force closes sometimes too.
When I first got on the ICS 211 it was was great. My wireless radios were great, wifi range was good, and ICS was running butter smooth. But lately noticing little bugs. I factory reset like 4 times already lol. Even went into recovery and factory wiped and wiped cache, wiped each twice! The problems haven't gone away.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
Does seem much smoother than .211 but I noticed the same when I first ran 211 it was flying but slowed down. Just flashed update today .215. Running very smooth and I live in a horrible signal area lucky to get 3g and its seems more stable than before. So time will tell. Will report back.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
I've run .214 and .215. I've noticed some very slight improvements with these two over .211. I would say connection seems more stable and phone lag been improved a bit. However it seems that these roms don't lock in my gps location near as quick as .211 did.

I just flashed 215 last night. Ran speed test on 3G. It's slightly quicker. On 211 and prior my 3G speeds on speed test were consistently around 2.30's MB. Fluctuates between that and sometimes hits 3 MB download speed. Last night running the test on 215 leak, speed was like around 2.50's. Will continue to report back if I notice bugs. Will run more speed test in different locations.

My link above will have a few more details I just added, but in my experience so far, a good rule of thumb with .215 seems to be 1h heavy use per 10% battery. Wayyyy better than .211 for me.
Erik
I reverted back to 211. Data speeds showed up faster on speed test app on 215 but it was actually slower in real performance. Data and Wi-Fi kept cutting off and reconnecting on 215. It was too inconsistent for me. Also when I texted the word prediction was insanely retarded and not accurate on 215. Least this was my experience. I did a factory wipe and all but that didn't fix the issues I experienced on 215 leak.

Why does my signal do this?

When I'm sitting at my desk, my phone (Droid X2) will have 4-5 bars with 3g showing. I place a call, 3g goes away(as expected) and I get 1 bar and I lose calls... Why would it fall back to a weaker signal to place a voice call? I understand that data can voice can't happen at the same time on a CDMA signal... But this drastic a difference for calls?
Hi, how do you hold it? After having started to grab it higher and leave the lower part with the antenna out of my palm, it cured it's signal issues.
Best regards,
V
V you have the x2 confused with an iphone this phone will keep almost the exact same signal if you wrap it completely in both hands. This is a software issue that usually only happened on stock and confuses the hell out of verizon reps. I would recommend a SBF to 2.3.4 and then going with cm7/cm9 for a ROM

Try changing your mobile networks settings. See if a different setting of roaming changes the behavior. You might find you are roaming on data and picking up a nearby out of network 3g tower then when you go to voice it favors a more distant in-network tower. Also download the app OpenSignal and see what that tells you about local towers.
And switch from bars to text for your signal, a real number will tell you things a set of bars really can't

Return it and get another phone while you still can. If you read on here long enough you'll see the many problems that arise from this POS phone. If you are going to stay with it you will probably be forced into a custom ROM just to make it work right. Memory is one of the main culprits that keep this phone from performing well. Every other phone that has come out since then that has 1GB of memory or higher has either had an opportunity to get more updates or better performing custom ROMs.
