Question with WiFi hotspot - HTC Rezound

hi, I have a weird question. I currently have ATT DSL service at home. I am curious is there anyway that I can use my existing free WiFi account from my DSL with my phone or tablets?
thanks

Do you mean connect to your home wifi with your phone?
That's easy, just turn on wifi in Settings and connect to your home network.

oh no, what i mean is if I am on the go, I will e able to get WiFi access on these mobile hotspots using my existing DSL account. I konw that with ATT DSL, they provide us free WiFi access on our laptops. I am curious if that can also be used on my mobile device like phone and tablets.
The reaons I ask is because I do not currently have any data plan on my phone so I cannot use any of the phone's hotspot feature. So I am thinking if I can just use DSL accoutn for WiFi so I can still access the net via my phone or tablet as oppose to laptops.

I think I know what you mean now.
If you sign in through the browser on a laptop then you can probably do the same thing with your phone browser.
If they try to block mobile devices you might have to use desktop mode in your browser.

thank you for the reply. Mmh, I do not think that it works as it will not display the log in screen. I will try the desktop version to see if it works.
anyone has tries this?

When I connect to a wifi network that requires web page login, as soon as I connect, it tells me I have to login and you can tap it and it will take you to the web page.

[Q] Reverse Tethering Through USB Cable On Android 2.3.3

I'm asking this question on BEHALF of MYSELF and OTHERS. Can you SHARE your LAPTOP or PC's connection with your android phone.
For example lets say i wanted to play a gameloft game but i need to download additional data through Wifi, is there a way for me to use my Laptop or Pc's connection through my phone so i can download the game for my phone.
If anyone has a solution to this question please make your answer VERY DETAILED
I am on a XPERIA X10, Please reply or answer THIS QUESTION
Advice:
I've Googled about this problem. I have data plan in my phone and no WiFi at home. Many people like me also use this way to get connection. But what they got were "FAILED". ONLY WAY = connect TO WiFi (can't say every game, but maybe 1% can use reverse tether method)

melvinchng Same here i dont have Wifi in my house, there certian games that wont download with my carrier network and insist on me downloading through wifi. I ALREADY know how to download GAMELOFT GAMES that require wifi only but it is very inconsistant and dodgy on my x10.
Theres a wifi signal on my laptop i can connect to the but the signal on android phones are so bad i just cant connect to the router.
If your pc has wifi(I know you don't have wifi in your house) you can download and use the app connectify for windows
If your pc has a working wifi card (with drivers installed of course), then you can share its connection via wifi. If you have windows 7, you can use "Connectify" or "Virtual Router". If you have windows xp and above (on a dell pc. Don't know if it works on others), then you can use "Dell Laptop to Hotspot Converter".
there is a guide on my device's forum about this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229558
for the step where it says "bridged local area connection and LG adaptor," you must find the equivalent of the lg adaptor that applies to your phone (if that makes sense). other than that, i think it should work.
What you are looking for is called "usb-internet pass-through" correct? Alot of custom roms already have it as a feature in the wifi setting, next to wifi hotspot. Im not familiar with your device or whether you are rooted but its pretty handy. Can also work as a wireless card, as in turn wifi setting on the phone and plug it into a desktop that doesnt have a wifi card and presto, wifi through your phone thats through a wireless router so its not eating up your data quota and much faster than the 3g on your phone. Hotspot problems - Cannot use hotspot from laptp

I have full 3G signal on my Samsung Galaxy S2, and I can easily use the browser on the phone to browse, as well as I am connected to Skype.
However the hotspot I am creating does not work for my laptop.
- My computer is connecting and gets an ip
- The android phone is still working
- I can create Open network or WPA2 PSK, yet none do any difference
- Even if I receive an ip address on the laptop, it still wont let me browse. It wont even let me browse on ip's, so its not even a DNS error.
I am out of options at the moment and I cant figure out what to do from here. I cant seem to find any solution anywhere, so XDA is my best hope.
And I even tested this from 2 different computers. One running Win XP another Win 7. None of them were able to connect (past) the hotspot.

There's some weird behavior on the native hotspot function. Are you using WPA2 encryption? Does it work with no encryption? (this is typical)
I read somewhere if you are using WPA2 encryption, and use an 8 digit password (must be digits - no letters, and has to be 8 long, exactly), then it will work.
did it ever work before? Is it possible that your carrier blocks tethering? Does usb tethering work?
It did not work with: no encryption either
However I will try now to see if it will work with WPA2 and 8 digits only.
Do you know of any app that allows me to fine tune the hotspot settings on the phone? I want to select more options than the two it gives me at the moment.
EDIT: Haha this is so insanely stupid. I am talking to Orange UK at the moment and apparently they have BLOCKED tethering!!! I am already paying for a 500MB package on my subscription but this does not include tethering. I have to pay another 4£ for 500MB which will be specifically for tethering. WTF! They are selling the same product twice????
EDIT 2: They are telling me that this is an Android block installed by Orange. Question is how I can get around this and use my existing 500MB. Does anyone know how this can be solved?

Yeah, lots of carriers do this stupidity. Just root and install wireless tether for root users.

I need to do the same thing i do with connectify but in my phone, i connect to the web with my wifi and share internet with the same wifi adapter.
i been looking into it for a while and people keep on say that i need 2 widi adapter for it but is SO no true coz i have and use only 1... I don't wanna use bluetooth at all or connect it with usb.
If anybody knows of an app that does this magic please let me know.
Thanks.
Have you tried wifi tether?

Thanks for the reply.
I havent find a tethering app that let me share my wifi connection over the same wifi adapter.
I am not looking to share my data plan by the way, Connectify work as a wifi repeater, so you log in to a wifi and the software let you share that same connection any way you like even simultaneously over the same wifi adapter.
I'm sure you have good reasoning, but why don't you connect the other device directly to the same wifi your phone is connecting to? are you trying to use your phone as a range extender?
If that is all you are doing, seems to me to be a waste of a good device.
You could go to dd-wrt.com, find the list of supported routers, then buy a cheap router that is supported and then flash that firmware. Then set up as needed.
I have been using that for years, except in wireless bridge mode.

I know this thread is super old...
one reason i have is open routers that need a login after connection. I have yet to get a repeater to work with one of these networks but connectify works as you connect your computer say yes i accept and then start sharing it.

You mentioned that the WIFI Repeaters donot work with Open Networks. Are you talking about "Wireless Repeaters and Range Extenders"? such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SQvaGEKOxc
fqrouter2 is the solution
Use fqrouter2 for rooted Android devices and you have a perfectly working WiFi Repeater (available free in Google Play Store)

Hello npg500, I installed the app you suggested but i am not satisfoed with it.
fqrouter doesnot "externds the range" of the WIFI. it just routes the internet connection though the Android phone it runs on (possibly by the MITM), keeping the routed device on the same network as it was before. i installed fqrouter to increase the signal strength from my Basement wifi. but no success. it shows my PC in the Scan area. but as mentioned it doesn't extends the Range.
Anynody having any idea what App can serve that functionality? Or Am I doing something wrong somewhere?
Anyone can suggest how to work this wifi repeater or extender mode on S5?
fqrouter is saying wifi is not supported on S5 but it does have MITM
Hi guys i see you know sometging about this...basically my neighbours gave my wifi password i typed it on android and i taught to share the connection from phne to laptop..is that possible?

You can simply view the password from your phone and input it in your laptop. Or, except you are experimenting something.
Am I missing out something?

[Q] How does a carrier know if a user is tethering as a wi-fi hotspot?

I am currently using Straight Talk, and found that the Android built-in "portable wi-fi hotspot" worked right away for me in seconds. I know this is against the terms of use for Straight Talk, but how can they tell I am using it? I would like to be able to tether my laptop once in a while (perhaps 100 MB/month for work when I can't access wi-fi). How would they know? Couldn't Android apps be coded in some way where the carrier cannot tell that an external device is connected?

well, using a laptop takes a lot more data, then say using your brower on android. so the upstream and downstream of data being pulled would be a dead givaway
? I didn't say what I was doing on each device. I probably use 1GB/month on my phone, and as I said, maybe 100MB if tethered.

It's called packet sniffing. They know what browser you're using, and what websites you're visiting. They know you're not using the phone to browse, but rather a computer via tethering.
The way around this is to use a virtual private network (VPN). VPNs are a service you pay for, monthly or yearly.
Another way is to use PdaNet+ and USB tether to your computer. PdaNet has a companion program that you install on your computer, and there's an option to "hide tether usage", which creates a VPN between the 2 devices. It has a bluetooth tethering option as well, but connection speeds won't be as fast. PdaNet+ is $8, which might seem a bit high, but it's only $8 once, and the freedom it gives you is well worth it. I USB tether my phone for my home internet, have been doing it for months with T-Mobile's unlimited high speed, and use a ton of data (100gb+...one month I used nearly 400gb).
If you have no carrier provisioning (ie: a Straight Talk tethering app) on your phone, it's possible that you can use a browser plug-in that masks the browser. In other words, instead of your Firefox browser being detected as for PC, you can mask it as Firefox for mobile, or Chrome mobile, or whatever. YMMV, and sites will tend to load up the mobile version, which can be a bit of a PITA.
It is not illegal to use your data as a wi-fi hotspot. FCC law. It's not against user agreements to do so either, except for certain circumstances (like running a server, but you're not doing that anyway).

Use chromecast with 4G connection ? I have no secondary device with wifi

Yes I bought the chromecast V2 but I could never believe this stupid limitation that you can use it only with wifi conection which means you need a secondary device to make this work.
I have a fast and reliable 4G speed so I have no need to invest in any wifi solution.
I hope this is a joke ? must be some way around it ? (without root)

I use mine every day with only my phone's LTE signal through its hotspot. The trick is you have to use another phone to set up the chromecast to connect to it initially. You only need to do this one time to get the chromecasts's settings set properly, and then just turn hotspot on on your phone, chromecast will see it and connect every time.
I think the chromecast app is the only one that requires wifi on before it will even attempt to look for a receiver, because in my experience, streaming apps like netflix, hbo, youtube and comedy central dont consider what radio connects to where at all before the cast icon pops up.
Something else you can do to get that initial setup done is to connect it to another wifi AP with the SSID and WPA2 password set to whatever you want your phone's hotspot to use. Im pretty sure the chromecast only look at the network name and security (not MAC or anything like that) becasue ive done this a few times without issue.

Oh my god ? is this really true ? so you say you only need a wifi network ONE time ? to setup the chromecast and then I can use it with wifispot on my smartphone ?
This sound beyond stupid to me.
The problem is I have no secondary device I can do this with and I got no wifi network to connect to.
Must be some way around this some how if you only need to d this one time

That's what I'm saying.
The reason it doesn't work setting it up that first time is because that process involves both Chromecast and phone using the app fsetting it up to first connect directly to each other, then both connect to the same AP, then talk to each other again for through that network, WITH internet access at the same time. That's really hard to switch radios around fast enough (not impossible though) and still get it to accept and keep the settings for good
---------- Post added at 05:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:53 AM ----------
Also, once you get it working, youll probanly want to use a laptop or something like that to be the device that you use to tell the Chromecast what to play... It works better that way, and you can to use your phone for other stuff while that's going on if you want. You can cast local media from a PC with way better results as well, using something like Plex or the Videostream plugin in Chrome
i am a little confused here, use another device to set up connection and then use your own device right after? how is that going to work if its two different connections?
I just got chromecast and have no WiFi or hot spot but could take to a place to set it up but when I got back home could I use it to mirror my phone screen

get your phone to hotspot and connect that way. it doesn't need internet, just a active wifi network
I am also a bit confused. Could someone please spell it out step by step to idiots like me? Is there a link or YouTube video?

Are u needing help with the set-up process?
You need a 2nd local device to setup Chromecast.
1. Turn on cell phone hotspot (lets say name is Chase)
2. Connect 2nd device to Chase
3. Using 2nd device, setup your chromecast to connect to chase. TURN GUEST MODE ON
4. Once everything is set up and your chromecast is connected to Chase, you can use your smartphone running the hotspot to connect to the chromecast via the Pin. The 2nd device is no longer necessary.
Without something to connect the chromecast to the phone, I see no way to do it.
Side note, the pin feature can sometimes allow you to use your chromecast on hotel wifis that do not normally work.
---
OP, is there no where near you like a internet cafe, staples, library, anywhere that might have a computer with internet access with wifi? What about a smart phone shop like Verizon or Tmobile? Use one of their demo phones to do it.

I have same issue like this. The only thing is I don't use a Chromecast. I hook up my TV with LAN (Old Sony Bravia) to my router and my phone to same routers WiFi. So I am able to share and connect with TV. No issues. I have a crappy wired internet connected to it. I also have unlimited 4G plan on my phone. I use AllConnect to cast from my Phone to TV. Now I am able to cast Movie HD app via AllConnect on my TV. But as soon as I disconnect the wired internet from my router. I am not able to cast. I want to use my Phones 4G internet to stream on my TV. Theoretically it should be possible to cast using my routers LAN which I am able to. But as soon as I disconnect DSL cable from my router the streaming stops. Can anyone help me here.
Another way

Hello
You can also spoof the MAC of the chromecast on your phone and configure the chromecast by this way.
However you need to have root access on your phone to install a software like Mac Changer.
This solution is very usefull in an hotel which require a connection to an open wifi network and a second authentification with login and password.
