[Q] How can I convince someone to buy an Android tablet instead of iPad? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My dad's friend is looking to buy a tablet and he's asking me for advice on which tablet to buy since he's on the fence. I'd hate to see him buy an iPad because, well, we all know why. He's a complete tech noob and only knows about iPad because that's what he thinks is the "cool one".

Just tell him to wait untill the nexus 7, the price alone should stear him towards android over apple.

don't let your personal preferences influence someone else's choices -
I've been thinking about smartphone for my father several times (still in planning phase) and considering his lack of time and need to have something that simply works out of the box (i.e. no customisation predilections), I always end up with and iPhone as the perfect device for him (even though for me it would mean buying the dumbsmartphone)

Bring him over to a local electronics shop with both tablets available to test.
Let him try them and see what he feels about the two different tablets.

As much as I hate Apple, I'd probably suggest their products to people who aren't the best with technology.

Android tablet have a bunch of choice.. u can take the cheaper one.. before nexus 7 was released, for me android tablet was laggy.. u can promote nexus 7

android is better...
ipad => iOS = less flexibility ( as far as i am concerned...they technically tell you "it my way or the high way"
android => wayy better in terms of flexibility.

Yup that's what I recommend for the technologically challenged too. I much prefer Android but there are some apps that Android doesn't have - my cable provider has an IOS app that lets me watch live tv on my Ipad. The Android app doesn't have this and there are a few apps for IOS that haven't made it to Android.
Nothing against Apple other than the crappy Itunes software and the way your device is forever married to the computer you initially sync it with.

Ok so HONESTLY, yes. An ipad would be better for utter tech noobs. BUT, lets not forget about the soul sucking control freak monopoly that is Apple. Yes, it would be a "better" choice, but, supporting Apple hurts Android since they are actively trying to put an end to android devices. Giving them your money, or suggesting that someone else gives them there money is just supporting them and giving them more power.
Try to explain WHY Apple are evil dirty theives(Stealing from open source and claiming it as their own.) And how they are trying to be a monopoly. Also if he plans on having hooked up to a wireless service(Sprint ect.) he will have a hard time getting good cust service. Apple is bad for the future of mobile computing and software development.
There is the kindel fire, which is very inexpensive, and has a really good UI/UX. Also the new google tablet looks great.

Just show them around examples here of people saying 'Moved from an iPad to a X', Android is so much better etc

I know, right? Well, I've been an iPhone users for 4 years, so I know well how they think. Will keep replying for the lulz - it's not really hard to counter the arguments either. I've been using them for years!
I don't defend. Just got sgs2 today and gave I4 to lil cousin.
Lol that was defiantly worth a read. Compare any Apple product with a superior competitors product and you will NEVER get a Apple fanboy to admit its better. Ever.
I've never had an iPhone (because I hate apple, iTunes, and their closed ecosystem), but from what I can see the iPhone 4 is still a great phone, and has a few advantages over the SGS2 :
-It looks better IMO (maybe that's just me but I think MOST phones look better than SGS2, I ordered a Zenus Carbon case hoping it will hide some of the ugliness while protecting it lol)
-It has better games
-It has a few apps that android is lacking, or apps that are better on iOS
-I think the battery lasts longer and the screen has better outdoor legibility, but I did not test that personally so it might be distorted ^^
Anyway, I don't think there's really an argument here : Both phones are very good and very expensive, the SGS2 is probably the best android phone available and the iPhone 4 is the best iOS phone available. So people who want iOS should get the iPhone 4 and those who want Android should get the SGS2, simple as that
Without wanting to start a flame war (especially as in this case, I do prefer the SGS II), surely people blindly defending Android is just as bad as those people blindly defending iOS?
People have their reasons...if you think people can have hundreds of apps which they have paid for, it can make switching platform a costly decision regardless of all the other +'s and -'s.

I get that, there is making an objective choice for whatever reason and then there is rabid fanboyism on all platform. I've always been a bit nomadic when it comes to technology, especially since I work in IT I need to know stuff about all things IT and deal with technology from all over, but I can proudly say that I've never owned anything sold by apple and that's just because I can't stand the fake image of class, pseudo-intellectual facade and bloody ignorance displayed by the morons who fall for the marketing campaigns apple employs.
Oh yeah, I particularly like the one where someone I know got an iPhone 4 when they were released and started to brag about the free iCondom they got to "fix" the reception issue. That made me lolz.
I always like the "Yeah its more powerful but I don't need power so why would I buy it" argument. I dont need a Ferrari F430 Scuderia, but I damn well want one. The only reason I would buy a Honda Accord or something like that is because the Ferrari is a lot more expensive. Here we have 2 phones, that cost relativly the same. So if you could have a Ferrari or a Prius with each of them almost the same price, you would take the Prius because you dont "need" a Ferrari? Fool proof argument there...

Oh yes, absolutely. I've been defending iOS for years, and I only started defending Android last night.
I don't think I've ever been 'blind' in my defense though. The iPhone 4 is honestly a very good handset for its time, and a lot of hate it got were unwarranted.
It's always fun to see people blindly defending for anything, like this case here. There are a few intelligent people in that thread though, so it won't be pure lulz. But there are sure a lot of 'mindless zombies'.
Im a apple fan, had all there models and must say iphone 4 is a nice phone. I sold mine to get iphone 5 recently but cus they delayed i got sgs 2, i like both devices and will still buy iphone 5 when its out, only cons for apple is less customization and horrid itunes. And for me with android its just the apps are not as good in my opinion. So im half and half really i like both, carnt stand windows7 phone !!

iphone 4 is garbage....I bought it the wife....all I hear from her is complaints.
It drops calls...it doesnt load all webpages (flash)...the main home button doesnt work sometimes...blah blah blah.
I spend a fortune getting the "bigger GBeeez" (32gb) one for her. Once the SGS2 comes to NA, I will give her my SGS1 and sell the icrap4.
The only things I like about the iphone4 is the screen and the camera quality. I even jailbroke it for her and loaded a bunch of apps...still crap!
All apple fools are idiots....I have soo many friends that only buy apple products...I dont understand why!

Well, to be honest, that sounds like the reviewer is a total Android fanboy in that case. Prime does not beat 'ipad in all ways'. Even the biggest fanboys in this forum would not say that Prime is better than an iPad is in every way.
It's actually more like a preview
So what do you think of Benny Feilhaber?
I would. Only people who haven't owned or owned for very long would say that. ios is crazy locked down. There isn't much to do other than play games. Its like a prison rec yard with razor wire and little Steve jobs guards with whistles..

Android vs. iOS is like religion and politics - you just don't go there. I'd never buy an Apple product because I can't stand their Orwellian control over both the h/w and s/w. But, for people who like things simple and thought out for them, iOS is a safe bet. Also, look at the price of a used TF1 vs. an iPad1. Apple sells more iPads in a week than Asus is projecting for all of 2012. Whether you like Apple or not they've built up quite a little empire of loyal fans. I just bought my niece a 32GB iPad2 because Garage Band doesn't exist for Windows or Android. So there are examples of things you can do on iOS that you can't on other platforms.
Gaming: ipad 2
Office stuff: push
Personalization: Android
Quik learning curve: ios
Transitions to apps: ios
All of this might/ should change with tegra 3 and ICS coming out, but we dont know what ipad3 will bring either.
What i chose in those "catagories" might make you think i would be a Apple fanboy, but i put personalizatio/customization as 88% of my personal scoring. I own an ipad and ipad 2 and theyre great for my wife and 3yo. But i love my a500 and my asus when it gets here.
pizza and beer ...
Android on a tablet is damn near all anyone needs for their daily computer needs. I FULLY believe android is the future of computing. Hands down blowing the doors off of ios. Its laughable really....

OS Functionality: Android
iOS is essentially a glorified app launcher. Which fine as far as it goes, because iOS has lots of good apps. But I like being able to use my tablet without needing to launch apps, and there's quite a bit I can do with my Transformer right from the home screen (see recent emails, Tweets, Facebook updates, calendar events, tasks, etc., create Evernote notes, etc.).

Not so sure about the gaming verdict there. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the iPad supports game controllers. Also it seems that I'm able to get a lot of the iTunes paid apps free in the Android Market.
Downloading from anywhere you want.......Android
Modded by MBOK
Funny how every thread here turns into an android vs ios discussion I think that just shows that both systems are very good and really competing. Best situation for us the users. They race each other with new features and lower prices and we profit!
Anyways it all comes down to personal preference. For me the Prime beats the iPad in all ways. But there are so many reasons why people get tablets and everyone is looking for something slightly different...
-There is the "i buy every apple product" guy
-There is the "i have all other products from apple so i buy my tablet from them as well" guy
-There's the "everything must be shiny and sparkling" guy (that obviously buys apple products)
-There's the "i would never buy an apple product" guy
-There's the "omg i love the keyboard dock idea on the prime" guy (me)
-There's the "i wont buy a tablet without full sized USB port somewhere" guy (me)
-There's the "i want to use my tablet for more than media consumption" guy (me)
-There's the "i dont want to jailbreak my device to be able to use it properly" guy (me)
and so on and on... I think in the end Apple will have about the same spot they have in the PC market now. Why? They've put those great ideas out there with the iphone and the ipad and no one else had any comparable products at the time. This situation is called "Monopoly". You get huge sales by that. Imagine there would be only one car manufactor...
But while other companies like ASUS improve this idea by adding new stuff, Apple somehow keeps to the original idea. So many gamers are screaming for a hardware control method. Apple says you have touchscreen its awesome. Having a keyboard dock and full sized ports is awesome but Apple says you have touchscreen and cloud thing - thats better. Etc.
i find that old people, women, and kids are more suited for ios. While its a "glorified shortcut screen" its all they really need. Oh yea, and non nerdy guys too.

I guess anyone who does not like/ want to spend time on customizing the OS would love the iOS experience. Similar to what happens with Mac vs. PC. You want to customize and be able to change everything that you could possibly think of but with the possibility of messing up your system, get a PC/Android. You want an out of box experience which is pretty much smooth while only safely letting you stay within the virtual walls the engineers developed, get an Apple.
Android tablets slowly chopping away iPad marketshare
Not sure if this is a correct place to post it, but I saw this article this morning
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/strategy-analytics-apple-still-owns-tablet-market-but-android/
According to numbers, Android is slowly eroding Apple's hold on tablet market. And I believe numbers do not show Transformer Prime yet. Wonder how long until we see the same thing here that happened with phone market, when Android overtook iPhone.

iPhone hit back strongly last quarter though, impressive for one company to out-perform every other company out there put together. But yeah it is inevitable, Android will chip more of that market share away in upcoming years as long as companies produce great phones and tablets.
I cannot resist pointing out that quality control plays a huge role in it though. If Android phones and tablets become known for quality hardware and build wise as much as Android itself has become a very solid and stable operating system, this will happen quickly. But if the 'best Android tablet' launch, like that of TF201, is continuously full of problems in the future, then it's basically Android shooting itself in the foot.

They will probably do a new tablet either late summer or before Xmas. I just hope they stick with Android and don't do anything stupid like use their own OS or even worse Windows 8.
non-concerned
I don't see this as a big concern.
The new IPad HD is simply an updating, and not a huge change. It is getting a better processor and HD screen. Stuff the IPad 2 should have had in the first place.
While I absolutely love my Sony "S" it has a few quirks I would like straightened out. It will be interesting to see what the next generation looks like and hopefully it will be more successful.
I was just wondering if the tablet s was Sony dipping their toes in the market, and if they consider it to be worthwhile continuing to develop a successor, or if they didn't sell that many and so will give tablets up as a bad job. I have no idea either way. As far as I can see, the problem Android tablets have is that there are so many different ones by different manufacturers, whereas the Ipad is made by only one company and seems to be the better integrated product overall. I don't know of any Android tablets with comparable specs that the new Ipad has?... And it seems that some developers have given up on Android altogether - Sky, for example have said that they aren't developing Sky Go for Android tablets, and the same with their Sky Sports Ipad App. If this is how major companies are thinking, then it's going to be tough to convince companies like Sony to carry on with trying to make a rival tablet.

Well that's the problem with all android products. Way too much choice, occasionally makes me wish I had an iPhone so I knew my phone wouldn't turn old in a month lol. But back to the main point I can't say whether Sony will or will not make a new tablet this year, however what with them releasing (IMO) some really nice phones it seems like they are trying to reassert themselves in the market, so its very possible they will. Better question is what will they upgrade/change ignoring processor and screen resolution
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using XDA Premium HD app
I think they're going to have to look closely at the form of the thing - I really like the way that the Tablet S looks and feels with it's wedge shape, but it was like they designed it and then struggled to think of how to design a case for it. Whereas the Ipad has the clip on cases where you open it and the thing turns itself on. The whole thing is integrated better somehow. It's little details like this that Sony has to get right if it's going to compete. And it may have to swallow it's pride and lower the price too. I'm sure the mindset of a lot of people will be "Why pay £399 for this Sony when I can have a proper Ipad for the same money?".
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401278,00.asp
This article should provide some answers.
Looking forward to seeing what Sony has up their sleeves in the future.
Sounds positive.
But they do need to get companies like Sky on board, or what's the point? A tablet really is only as good as the apps that are available for it.
I just hope this is not some kind of VHS/Betamax (or blu-ray/hd-dvd to be more modern...) face-off where there will only be one winner. Because if that's the way it goes, then it will be Apple.
Im sure by the fact that they say they hit their sales expectations they understand just where they are in terms tablets. Really though just gonna have to give it time android is still evolving. And I kinda disagree that a tablet is only as good as the apps you can get. But I mostly use mine to read news, watch YouTube and listen to music so I can't say I know what every user does.

I saw those articles. lmfao just goes to show how childish alot of IOS users are. they are hating the fact that Android has Instagram now. Android flood of instagram users will overtake apple users in a short period of time. Android has way larger user base. I got it on my Atrix. haven't really tried it out yet. seems like a bunch of b.s. really. so i want to see what the hype is over. I hope its not just some dumb filters as I've had those and more alot longer on android in general. seems like some kind of picture sharing thing mostly between users. overrated IMO.
also funny is how the most popular iPhone model is the free 3gs iPhone offered by at&t. lol. how can we be poor if they using a free phone..lol

I'll not get too worried due to this. Only hipsters use Instagram and think they are "real" photographers. Yeah right.
In fact, no self respecting Android user will and should use Instagram. Camera360 beats it any day, anyway. Instagram is for spoiled brats and hipsters who think android owners live in a ghetto and live on food stamps.

This is horrible. What pisses me off the most about Apple is that they outsource their manufacturing and claim that it is to keep the cost of their product down, yet I believe they have the highest priced devices. Secondly they create a standard for the outrageously priced devices when they could EASILY shave 30 to 40 percent of the price on ALL of their mobile products if not ALL of them products. And, what's the worst part of all is that the mobile market is exponentially growing, meaning the two grand you dropped on your current phone/tablet setup will be obsolete in 3 to 6 months. Rather than really fine tune a product, they continually shell out new devices with "better" specs. Kinda ridiculous the way they produce products, even Android is guilty of this. It's bad for the consumer, but great for the companies. I mean why create a solid product that stays current for at least a year when you can make devices obsolete after three months which in turn will guarantee that at least a greater percentage of consumers will repurchase the newest devices at a quicker pace. Whatever happened to companies providing what is best for the consumer and not what makes the most amount of money in the shorted amount of time!
Oh well, it is what it is. Before you know it there will be an entirely new type of gadget out that replaces the smart phone/tablet all together and then the cycle repeats but with higher prices and shorter device life spans. Actually, to be honest, I am suprised that we aren't forced into purchasing firmware upgrades... Hmm, maybe I shouldn't of said that, I could totally see a CEO reading this post and going ZOMG GREAT IDEA $50 to update your device!
In any event, kudos to Cult of Mac for reporting on this, given that they're describing a large part of their own audience.
Ever jealous of being behind I see.
even if the iPad3 would cost half of the prime i wouldnt buy it.
man i hate the apple ecosystem and its hipster fanboys!
and whats up with the 'professional' photo-editing lol..
buy a real cam for that !
We didn't get Instagram, we got an emulator for the magical phone. Now we can carry all that smug self-importance in our pocket whenever we want to feel rich. 2 stars though because the voice recognition sucked and the photo filters made me feel ironic.

But I do have to say that when people buy an iPhone, they don't just buy a phone. They buy into a highly proprietary culture that promotes thoughtless spending.
Android? Well just comparing how easy it is to get refunds for purchases on Play vs App Store should give us all a good idea.

We didn't get Instagram, we got an emulator for the magical phone. Now we can carry all that smug self-importance in our pocket whenever we want to feel rich. 2 stars though because the voice recognition sucked and the photo filters made me feel ironic.

LOL! That is funny!
Social media really brings out the stupid in people. We used to think about something before sharing it with the world but now people share it with the world before thinking about it. It is because there always seems to be an audience (the internet) available. This is not the only case. (Incoming Hunger Games Spoiler) A while ago when the Grammys were on there was the whole "I would let Chris Brown beat me any day" tweets. Then when the Hunger Games movie came out there was the whole "I don't feel so bad about Rue anymore after finding out she was black".

I'm sure you'll all enjoy my comment on the article.
Master race transformer prime/htc one x owner reporting in. What's it like still using a dual core device guys? I mean I have pictures from 2006 but I'm sure you all could refresh my memory with your pictures from your lower resolution cameras on your redundant 'retina' displays?

lol all their rage right now.
What I get from this is Apple users blindly buy apps and hope they work for what they want it to do (As there is no refund). With Android I'm going to look for the free app if i'm looking for a specific function. If it does it well, then It might entice me to look into the paid version to see what extras you get if you pay for it. There are a lot of crap apps, and you kinda have to test them all to find the best one that works for you. It's annoying when there are no free apps on Apple to test what you want to do, and if the app you bought isn't what you thought it was or has problems, you can't refund. Sucks!
I really hate waking up, reading a thread and finding out Im poor.
I really need to talk to the IRS and get my 30 sum thousand dollars I sent them last year back.. do they not know Im poor?!?
What else can the Apple gods tell me??

Apple has kept a pretty consistent 1 year release schedule. Also why would you expect a company to lower their prices when they are selling their products as fast as they can? They arn't charities.

This is just ridiculous

Check out Apple's new patent.
Doesn't every phone have lockscreen shortcuts?
I mean I love how they say it's "new technology"
Apple created Adam and Eve and therefore has a patent on anything they create.
It says a new patent that allows access to apps from the iPhone lock screen specifically.
So my question is why hasn't the other manufactures already patented it? If they would have this crap wouldn't happen. Guess thats the problem with open source. Google and the patent office need to fix this. I don't care that Apple wants that for their phones but to patent something already being used is just BS.

Apple sues everyone for copying them, but as soon as they copy something that has been in android forever it's ok right... Honestly apple is just ridiculous in general. The interface is just easier for people and thats why the iphone is so popular, most people who own the iphone think its the best when the specs are lacking so far behind android. Thats why I have convinced two of my friends to get android phones after they both had iphones. They both like android better and said that the potential and things you can do on android is so much better. All those apple fan boys think their stuff is the best Maybe someone will sue them and give them a taste of their own medicine
Them filing a patent doesn't mean it will be approved. They attempt to patent just about everything they do, on the off chance it gets approved.

Most likely the best response I've read in a long time. I, for one, absolutely DESPISE Apple Mobility Department with a serious passion. All my friends who have the icrap come to me saying how they have Siri & other bs. Well, they don't have a full HD screen:good:, nor a quad core processor:highfive:, or the awesomeness of the XDA Developers & everyone in the XDA forums.

Apple is on the way out. Why do you think Apple stock has fallen 40 percent in the last 6 months? People like preference and android is mature. Apple is far behind the competition.

As much as I love to bash Apple until they're a nice warm cider I don't think I can agree that Apple is "on the way out". I think what we're seeing instead is the market shifting.
Apple for the past decade has targeted Innovators and Early Adopters offering Luxury goods. As the smart phone industry (specifically the always connected mini-computer touch screen phones we're used to now) matures margins fall and competition increases. iPhones used to be status symbols, and they still can be, however they've become so common place that they've lost a lot of their marginal utility.
Google, Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, even Sony have all stepped up their game on a united Android front. The brilliance of Android for Google that I suspect, is that the competition between Android devices (Samsung GS4 v. HTC One for example) improves the Android offering with tons of new features and brand visibility. I know for a fact that Android is regularly sipping away the iPhone's market share.
Returning to my point, Android has always operated with a model adopted from classic handset sales. Margins are fairly low, but, due largely in part by the free cost of Android to the developers, they're able to offer phones at affordable prices that match or exceed Apple's iPhone. Apple always tries to maintain that their products are different and superior to the competition. In fact, they rarely even acknowledge that there is competition and I do believe that this (over)confident stance has helped them maintain their market share and unique identity.
iPhones arguably lag behind Android's top offerings these days. No NFC, No Wireless charging, no HD screen, etc. I don't believe iPhones really hold the public perception of being superior to the competition anymore. Apple is struggling to keep it's market share and I think it's operating on a model that is unsustainable. Think of it this way.
When it comes time to replace a Macbook Pro, most users will grab the latest MBP without even thinking about it. When it comes time to replace their iPhone though, more and more people are considering, and switching to Android.
patents simply limit innovation. They limit what manufacturers can do with their devices.

I suspect you've never invented anything.
What the OP fails to disclose (and I don't know if any one of you bothered to do the research).. was that this patent was filed way back in 2011 by Apple. Also, the functionality in question is a little bit more involved than just merely accessing apps from lockscreen.
Apple is the most valuable company in the world.. if you want to believe into the 24x7 anti-apple propaganda.. by all means do so. But that is not gonna deter apple or tech enthusiasts who value what apple has to offer.
Apple and the whole iphone phenomenon annoy the sh**t out of me... I don't know why, it's only a phone. Such a stupid thing to get so annoyed about. But it's true. Every time they add a new feature to the iphone, everyone acts as if it's groundbreaking and it's a huge f***ing deal. And then you have those iPhone owners that are still convinced that owning an iPhone makes them "unique" as if they haven't noticed that everyone else has the same exact phone as them. Android as an os is better in every way and so is the hardware current phones use. And yet I use their products because I have to. I use osx and have an ipad strictly because I require the software. Were it not for that, I would probably be sticking Linux and Android.

All I can say is that I give Apple credit where it's deserved, otherwise I completely dislike any product they produce. Plus, iPhone's and iPads do have there place in the world..... like for my Mother to use.

Exactly. I have 0 issue with Apple other than their legal dept. They create a smooth, easy to use product. Polished, refined, it works. The retina display is truely remarkable.

Actually their retina displays are made by samsung. So you can't really give apple credit there. They just buy them from samsung. According to what I heard.

Under a no distribution clause Samsung solely sells the "retina" display to apple..
Apple just outsourced to save $ on a specialty product

Actually Samsung n LG just manufacture these products. 'Retina' display is just a marketing term used by apple to discribe pixle density+viewing distance needed to make individual pixles impossible to discern with the human eye or retina. Its core tech is no different than a standard LCD..http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/44728/what-exactly-is-a-retina-display
