Galaxy S III Carrier Specific Forums - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I've seen this question batted about in various parts of the U.S. Variant sub-forums, but haven't seen a specific movement to get these Galaxy S III forums further sub-divided. Although the hardware is pretty much identical, isn't there problems, issues, Q&A, that is germane to specific carriers? Although I do not have my GS3 in hand waiting for Verizon, this forum is already becoming an incomprehensible jumble of affairs. We are not talking about a phone that is limited release, this is a huge release. The "General" conversation is going to be different as will be Q&A. I mean we already have witnessed hard bricks from those flashing international ROMS. And I know the mandra of "read and read more" but wouldn't people be more comfortable if they had a Sprint version GS3 to go into a "Sprint" GS3 forum? To see issues specific to their carrier like "my data speed sucks how about yours" or LTE is lit up in New York or Verizon put how much bloatware on their phones?
IDK, I'll be here reading everyday but it just doesn't seem to make sense to jumble all the carrier threads together. I've never done it but can we at least get a public opinion poll posted for users to chime in what they would like to see? Each variant sub-forum will still be huge simply because this will probably be the best selling Android phone of the year.
Finally I remain humble and grateful for all the help and learning I've gained from here; not making any demands but just a suggestion.

This is a very good point. I asked the exact same question in the moderator introduction thread and apparently nothing is scheduled to change so far. I think they should sub-divide this by variant, ie i747, 999, etc, similar to what was done in the one x forums. This is currently way too crowded to follow properly or contribute in a meaningful way. I think xda are not used to such sales numbers of a device and were ill prepared with their sub-forum breakdown. I am hoping they rectify this and break this up further for all of our sakes.

It Is weird for most of people that had phones that are available in 1 carrier and not others, but trust me everything will be fine, I been on galaxy nexus forums, evo 3d gsm and cdma, etc, and by just having like this you might learn new things and should make development easier and porting, just make sure you clarify what phone are you talking about, remember that XDA is hosting all these forums for it and we're no paying anything too, the more forums you have the more expensive it could be
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

I have an idea that would help both mods and us xda user when it come to SGs3 forum. General and accesories can be left without carrier specific names. Then sprint, verizon, att&t, and t-mobile can have their own sub-forums with development, Q&A, and themes & apps.
Ex.
[Sprint]Gs3
- Dev
-Q&A
- Themes & Apps
And last the title of the Gs3 forum title should be changed to
"U.S Samsung Galaxy S3 variants ( Sprint, T-mobile, Verizon, & Att&t)
With this two sub forums can be deleted that are present now since they'll be apart of the carrier variant sub forum.

I totally agree. Lumping all the carriers into one forum makes things so crowded that the forums are almost unusable. It's really difficult to get back to a topic that you were browsing unless you actually made a post and can look it up that way. This is all with a limited release, just wait till you can get these in any store!

Lots of users didn't like the lumping of the forums; in particular the absolute fact that users will flash the wrong rom on their phones.
We've had users flash i9300 roms and they're not lumped in here. I agree that people should READ, but the reality is that lots do not in their haste and excitement.
I'm all for making things easier on the mods, because I could not imagine having to read EVERY post to make sure things stay on topic and civil. I just think there can be a happy medium between that and what the users would like.

i think the "Witch" ROM

This thread is an ultra-fail. OP spelling and grammar is a mess =P
If it's the T-Mo Vibrant, go to that forum...if it's an I9000 variant, stay here. Pretty simple.
Either way, this ain't dev, so thread reported.

Yeah something like that
The US variants (TMo Vibrant, AT&T Captivate, Spring Epic, Verizon Fascinate) all have their own forums.
There are smaller carriers with US variants like CellSouth or US Cellular, no idea where they go I also don't know where the Telus Fascinate goes, but the Bell Vibrant (which is really an I9000M) and any other I9000 goes here.
Since it sounds like this is actually for a T-Mobile Vibrant instead of the i9000, I've moved it to the Q&A section for that device.
OP, please take a moment to read the following thread, for guidelines on proper thread placement, particularly regarding the dev section:

ROMS for N7000 on I7I7??

Do the roms that are built for the N7000 work for the SAMSUNG-SGH-I717?? I only ask because...
1.) The I7I7 has only one ROM available and its not ICS where as the N7000 has several ROMs available.
2.) I know its possible because I run Desire HD roms on my HTC Inspire.
Thanks for all the help guys.

Apples and oranges. The Desire HD and Inspire 4G are basically the same phone. The hardware is the same except for some minor differences with the sound hardware. The international Note and ATT Note are completely different phones. The only thing they have in common is the size, screen, pen and they have similar cases. That's it. Everything else is different.

Absolutely questionable response and uncalled for...even suggesting that isnt humorous and maybe you should be concerned as to what people will perceive about you. Im just about sick and tired of all the rudeness and blatant self rightgeousness on these forums, members need to show some self-respect by not being rude. This forum has some NEW RULES as the base subscriber is no longer DEVELOPMENT ONLY the majority of us are not developers...they have their own section for each device to which noobs are restricted and should be, so giving people and noobs a hard time for something posted in the GENERAL and Q&A sections is ridiculous, so maybe show a little restraint if you choose not to help and just move on without posting anything!
Listen, I know a lot of noobs and others make mistakes and dont follow the rules but why jump on them outside of the DEV's threads? If you do as a senior or junior member then you also are breaking the rules!

New Original Development Sub-Forum

Hey all,
As some of you have probably noticed by now, we have a new Development section for original works. As explained in the portal article Introducing the Original Development Forums, these forums were found to be very useful in other sections and there has been a lot of requests to add them for more devices.
Please refer to the article for general guidelines on what is and isn't appropriate to post there, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in this thread or to PM any of the moderators about it.
Those using Tapatalk or the XDA app will probably need to refresh the forums list in order to see it. You can do this by going to the base forum view that list all of the different devices and refreshing or by unsubscribing and then resubscribing to this section.

I think this is neat, since I'm only really interested in the original development anyway, because that tends to be more fun.
Very nice. This will be extremely useful for devs.
edit: Hey Haus. Just an idea, but it would be nice to have a Recognized Dev forum with-in each device. One where we can collaborate and figure out mods together and have less chatter from non-devs. But a place where non-devs can still have access to links to mods and such. Just a thought.
Sent from my ClassicJewel
The way I see it is that it creates more place to navigate through to look for roms and other work. I personally do not see the real need for it especially since both sub forums would contain the same kind of information except that one would have original work and the other would not. This could have been done a different way without completely creating a new sub forum that would produce a similar result. For example, the OP post could explain that it's original work or the thread title for all original work would be identified with a prefix of ORG.
At any rate, it seems that others see it useful and probably very helpful for developers. I am not bothered by it! However, I would have preferred things to stay the way they were.
I'm just a little confused as to what defines original development versus non-original. Original meaning not ported from another device? As I browsed through the ROMs in each section I couldn't figure out what differentiated one from the other making it original.

The announcement really details the difference.
For example, CM9 development is original because it's new and big and it's something that's being created.
ViperROM, for example, is not original because it is based on HTCs stock ROM.

Well that is what I thought would be the factor at first. Except ViperROM and others based on stock are in the original section while other stock based ROMs are not.
Edit: I re-read the announcement and maybe the difference is more apparent to other devs and not so much to the layperson but still sounds kinda subjective. Doesn't make much difference to me, just curious.

There are a lot of times where someone with a low post count is able to help out a lot so we don't want to limit it too much, but making it so only RDs (and maybe RCs/RTs) can create new threads there may be a good idea. Try running it by them in the RD area to see if it's possible.

Unfortunately a lot of it is kind of subjective since it's a difficult thing to really define, but for the most part it depends on how significant the changes with the ROM are. It's very much a work in progress still so I apologize if things get bounced around some while it's all being sorted.

xHausx, I like your work and appreciate all the explanations you give but I gotta say.. this new section is retarded.
Maybe it was needed in the Samsung forums but we don't need it here. It's just going to confuse a ton of people.
I'm not a dev, so if they like the idea that's great. I just see it as a way for more silly arguments to start. I think that development is development the smallest of ideas is original. Seems like if you're in original then your work is somehow better. I guess we'll see how it works out.

I think the most annoying part of this feature is having to look in two different places for the same thing and being unsure which forum your favorite rom(s) are located in. The more I use this (both on a desktop and on the phone), the more annoying it is. I don't think the average user care much whether the rom is original or not as long as it works well and do what it is supposed to do.
The idea behind adding this feature is great but its reality is not.
I was excited about the section but it all seems the same as before. Every mod, derivative rom, and other FAQs.
I think it probably would have best been split AOSP core and HTC core if you're going to split it at all, otherwise just leave it the way it was, as messy as it was.
Im not a fan of it either. I find it hard to differentiate between the two. I've read the announcement but I still find myself going into both looking for a specific thread. I think this will just confuse a lot of people but if the devs like it then ok...
Sent from my LTEvo using XDA Premium
I'm a moderator, and I make roms and mods and themes, some of that is "original". I've written some tutorials for original things as well. Honestly I think this is silly. Maybe tag original dev threads or something like the "recognized" program. But differentiating dev threads seems like a lot more headache for devs and users alike. It's like making a new original themes section where the themer drew his images from scratch and wrote new xmls instead of modifying existing images and code. Who's idea was this? I fail to see it's benefit. If it is what it is then cool. But there's already RUU kitchen built roms in the "original" section, and though there may be "original" tweaks to said roms, I don't know that that makes them so. I'd love to have some transparent open discussion about this with users/devs/moderators alike. Thoughts? Counters? Etc?

Seems a bit childish when they decide to ban a dev they just close their threads. His stock w goodies had 899 posts so there must me plenty of members using that Rom. Members that visit this site. Without members and visitors they wouldn't be generating all the ad revenue.
Without the devs and development does xda have "anything" to attract visitors?
On the comment "xda has scared off more developement than it has gained",+1 couldnt agree more. seems to be alot of the bro deal buddie buddie s#!t going on and it kinda makes things suck. Especially for devs like flex360. I seen in a post title "if your a user just looking for a cool rom go away" well as a user ill remember that crap. And wont use it even when it is released, or any of the other crap he puts out. XDA is supposed to be about shareing knowledge and helping others obtain it. And Shareing what you have developed with the community. Not for the "this is mine and you cant have it" frame of mind. Seems that things have gotten turned around somehow at xda, and the ones who deserve to be reprimanded are being rewarded, and the ones like flex360 and others i wont mention who deserve recognition or reward are being punished. Whos next, OMJ or bigdaddy for helping and contributing too much.(just a couple names off the top who have helped me greatly in the past along with many others) At any rate, we dont know what happend with flex and maybe never will, as long as he knows theres a great many of us who are bebind him 100% and will support him in any way we can for his contributions to us. We're here for ya flex. :endrant:
*Information IS the most dangerous weapon of all*
If u read the sense 5 thread, you can see what happened, (690ish post) flex ported something to sense 5, and shared it, and didn't give credit to original mod, until a little while later. Not really sure why they locked his rom post as people may still have discussions regarding the rom.

Flex just tweeted banned until may 29,
The thing I want to know why is he banned? How can they close a thread with 700k+ views? That's like lost ad revenue to them if those users say f it to xda, and if it was Over a little incident that got resolved that is unfair in all ways possible, but oh well we are user's and no one gives a @#$? There's more to it then you or I or anyone can speculate. Its between flex and the mods, he more then likely understands it and hes not complaining...if you have questions, contact a mod, if you value flex privacy, then leave it alone, let this be handled by flex, the site admins and the mods.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Firstly hi.
Secondly, I'm not the mod who banned flex however I can speak to why the thread was closed. It was closed due to him not being able to support it while he is banned. Same thing happened the last time he was banned.
To the scaring off developers, give me a break. I work the website as a whole and there isn't a mass exodus of great devs. If people don't abide by the rules dev or no dev they meet with consequences. Everything is taken into account before bans happen user history post history.
As for the dev thread mentioned with the title saying users don't come. I changed that thread title because users were getting upset at devs getting upset at users posting in it. The devs aren't keeping it to themselves, it's a development thread. Purely not meant for users. Like someone said this XDA developers. It's in the original dev section, yet users who have nothing to so with the project despite being told otherwise continued to post. It was stated that the sense 5 port wasn't ready for mass consumption when it is you will see a bunch of stuff about it.
Now everyone go on about your day and spend time with your family. Put your phone down for a while, step away from your keyboard.
Thanks.

Why are the sub forums the way they are?

Seems to me it would be nice to have sub forums for things like kernals/tw roms/aosp roms/themes
Right now it seems like it is sorted on something most people don't care about and we have to wade through it all just to get two the meat and potatoes of what we are actually looking for.

Because it is xda forums and xda makes the rules. I agree, the organization could be improved...but it is what it is.
I bet if you created more sub forums the moderators wouldn't be able to keep up. It's tough for them as it is with as many devices listed here. Could you imagine adding two or three more sub forums to every device? OMG

I am not saying just adding but having better subs
I think if re organized it would be easier to maintain. Plus you wouldnt have to moderate threads like "where did the carbon rom go"
I think a lot of folks probably feel the same way but i guess whatever i am not the one maintaining....

It would make it more logical, but you would need more mods. People can't even figure out to not post a question in development or even more common general. Could you imagine if we had more sub forums for then to miss post in.
Perefect example, this question (labeled question in the title) posted in the wrong section (general). Just sayin

good catch.... however it should be titled "discussion about sub forums"
I am not saying we need more sub forums. i am saying we need better lines between them. After all a lot of questions just turn into discussions.
90% of the people don't know or care the difference between orig dev and dev.
however 90% would know the difference between a rom and a kernal.

I think this might be a little optimistic :silly: But your point is still valid. I think a re-organization would be nice.
I don't see any need for more sub-forums. The current organization makes perfect sense. That is why there is a naming convention for kernels and ROM's. The current organization is the result of years of trying different organization of sub's on XDA.
Remember, first and foremost XDA is a forum for developers to collaborate and share work.
But everybody is entitled to have an opinion, I'm not trying to stifle that.

If only there was a search function you could use. Or even just a way to save your favorite threads.... lol j/k someone had to say it.
I agree, there does seem to be room for improvement.
IMO the Q&A should be eliminated. If you have a question about a ROM, Kernel, or Theme ask it in that thread. Any other kind of question should be in general or accessories. I would even go as far to say the general section should be shared with all carrier forums, like accessories is.
I also think Themes and apps should be split. Themes should go in development and be carrier specific. Apps should be part of accessories because the majority can be used no matter carrier.
It would actually condense the number of sections and should be easier to monitor. But it's just my opinion, from the outside looking in.
