[Q] One final attempt at getting help.(mytouch 3g) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A few months ago, I made a help thread on how to get my phone rooted after some roadblock. However, I didn't get any type of help whatsoever. So I decided to remain on the phone's base firmware for eternity. However, I decided to try again. Anyways, below is the opening post I made for that thread. I only included the parts I still have trouble on.
(i made sure to do a backup)
Let me sum up what I have done:
I've managed to follow a guide on a wiki(I lost the link however, since I ATTEMPTED to give up on this) that involved me downgrading my firmware, then do some steps to install cyanogen 1.4. Afterwards, I got to step that required me to rename some file to update.zip. I followed that step and noticed my computer didn't convert the file to a zip file(it remained as a img file) but continued anyway while finding that odd.
Afterwards, cyanogen tells me that it cannot find the zip file. I've search most of google and a bit of this site, and i've seen various solutions that failed me such as:
-renaming the update.zip to update
-using android sdk(which i have no clue on how to use)
So if you managed to read my long and boring story, let me ask one question:
How do I get my phone back to normal if rooting is impossible at this point?

the file staying an image file though you renamed it usually comes from windows hiding known file types' extensions. you can turn that off in your file browser through Tools -> Folder Options and somewhere over there there should be a checkbox that says "hide known extensions" or something.
(that means that if the file was originally called abc.img it is now abc.zip.img only the .img part is hidden).
the link you had to a wiki is probably this one:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/TMobile_myTouch_3G:_Rooting
or any other one from this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Magic
good luck

Thanks to that, i've gotten a little farther. Hoewever, i'm stuck at flashing a recovery. it now says: FAILED (remote: not allow)
What is this?
EDIT: After hours of searching, it seems that this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218 is the answer. However, since my SD cards cannot be gold carded(since I need a gold card for this solution), i'm pretty much screwed until I find a compatible SD card. Thanks for trying though.

SO LOST! and now worried as to what to do next please help!

I just got the viewsonic g tablet. Ive followed several guides as to how to root it and get recovery on the device and flash a new rom, and I've failed completely and i think may have damaged my ability to get into any recovery. I believe i installed clockwork correctly v.8 correctly. I read that after you do that you can delete the folder called recovery and the existing update.zip so i did. I replaced the update.zip with the newest version of tnt lite 4.4 i believe. However every time i try to get into recovery it does not work. It turns on, says recovery key detected and then flashes a package for about 5 seconds, then boots up into the normal tablet os. It is as if every time i go into recovery or attempt to, it repeatedly installs clockwork recovery. So i feel at this point i cannot even get into any recovery whatsoever. I just tried a factory default erasure, but that this point i don't know if i altered the recovery to do that. If anyone could be so kidn as to help me out here and walk me through what im doing wrong or how you can save my ass i would be so greatful.....
Damn, I always hit thanks instead of reply, talk about bad GUI or blind clicker....
this is exactly what is hapening, you must have an update.zip in the root of the internal memory just to help you figure it out
sdcard = internal memory 16GB
sdcard2 = external card Whatever size you place
Try removing the sd card if you have one the update.zip could be there also...
either way try to figure it out, but you are definitely flashing a file, it's not a bug if I can say so... good luck!
Also this confirm you do not have clockwork installed but the original recovery (no menu, simply grab the update.zip and flash it!)
and read this again maybe
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010943
heres the thing. I don't understand what is going on. when i put in my actual sd card. i cant get the file explorer to see it or reconize it for some reason. this is what is killing me, initally when i went into es file explorer it showed sd card and sd2 but later it wouldnt show up when i had an sd card in there. I appreciate your help, i really feel like im killing my tablet here. I had the update.zip on the internal memory or sd card as it reads, not on the actual sd card because i couldnt find the sd2 file system. what do i need to do again now that you know this?
this is the complete sotry of how i got to where i am ......... i first tried to installed zroot and failed. then i dloaded clockwork mod .8 for i believe sd and accidently put it on the internal sd and got confused. i did the power off then power and volume up. it then installed i guess clockwork. then i powered on, deleted the recovery folder and update.zip from the internal sd because a forum post said to since u didnt need it for clockwork. So i then dloaded a rom. then tried to go into clockwork but like i said it kept saying recovery key detected and flashed clockwork mod. and does that over and over. so i then added a recovery folder back with a text file that said command and a command line within that text file. and i dladed the most current stock rom and named it update.zip figuring that if i bring it back to normal i could start over. but everytime i would try to go into recovery it would just seem to flash clockwork. so now im very lost and have no idea how to fix this. ALL i want to do is have root access and flash a rom and I feel like i completely screwed this up and am at a loss.
1. Remove recovery folder and update zip from both sdcard and sdcard2.
2. Add the clockworkmod zip to the root of sdcard. (make sure you are using CWM for internal SDcard)
3. Using Esfile explorer extract the contents of the clockworkmod zip.
4. You should now have a new recovery folder and update zip on \sdcard.
5. Power off.
6. Power on holding the volume +.
7. CWM zip will be flashed. (should only take a few seconds) and then tab will boot normally.
8. Reboot into recovery and enjoy the CWM goodness.
P.S. All the custom ROMs come already rooted. No need to root ahead of time.

thekafka,
First, read this info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010943
If you indeed have a working ClockWorkMod, all you have to do
is copy the update.zip file to your /sdcard directory. The shut
down and start CWM using power / volume +. The use the
menus to tell it to load the update.zip and find the update.zip.
You don't have to have the recovery folder with CWM, but you
do need update.zip (you said in your summary you erased it!)
If this doesn't move you ahead enough to work, clarify what
you did this time and what happened and we'll look for Plan B

moral support...
There are far more expert posters on this forum than I. But I just thought I'd give you some moral support. Take deep breaths, and don't panic. The people here will help you through just about anything, and any missteps you might make. All of us, well, most of us, started out exactly where you are, and we are still great fans of the gtab. I have found that even I could not "brick" the tablet. And believe me, I have had moments of panic too. So, just read the various threads, carefully follow the steps, and just take your time. The gtablet is a great tablet.

Bump for this kind fellow. I have in the span of a week taken my Gtab as close as it is possible to bricking, and managed to get it back into working condition with instructions from elsewhere on this forum.
The good news is that with a little elbow grease, and assuming that you don't break the hardware, you are just fine. The Tegra2 platform is hard to brick, and if all else fails you can use Nvflash to rebuild the partitions and write a stock image to flash. If you think you have done something really bad to your ROM, reverting to a stock image may be a reasonable next step.

Read the install notes
For starters depending on what version of the OTA you are on 3588 etc.. on the TnT lite install in recommends that cwm not be used.
TNT Lite is an alternate 1.1 based ROM for the GTab, based on the stock ROM that Viewsonic supplies. This will flash system, bootloader and your kernel, so be aware of this. Clockworkmod is NOT recommended for use with TNT Lite flashing (as it does not update the bootloader as required by the vendor), but it is an option if you feel you must use it (ie. if you are stuck in a boot loop and need to wipe your user data). It is a "mostly stock" ROM.

You might need to read up a bit more or use an older version. I have bricked this tablet more than a few times. I use linux to nvflash and have nvflashed from 3991 back to 3588 and still been able to drop tnt lite 4.2 back on it.
You might need to read this a few times.. I keep reading the dang thing over and over...

[Q] Need help - Problems extracting/installing

I have Vista Home Premium 64bit and I did download WinRAR 64 bit edition. Whenever I try to install that there claims to be a corrupt file and I have downloaded it a few times from a few sites.
So I go back to the 32 bit version of WinRAR and that installs fine, but reminds me for better performance to use the 64 bit version.
Now, whenever I extract a ZIP or RAR file the Update.exe is missing or I receive a message about the CRC security not matching. AND if and only if I can get the files extracted when I try to install the ROM the Gtab is constantly stating a "status 7" error. I have tried TNT, VEGAn and 1 other ROM and each will not install.
Is there anyone who would be willing to use Skype or some other means to assist me in getting the tablet back up and running something, even if that's the stock ROM?
I do have Clockwork Mod installed already, that was the only thing that seems to have installed correctly.
Thank you in advance,
Brian
If I undertsand correctly: Youre trying to extract the contents of the "update.zip" file that comes as part of the ROM download?
If so.. you dont extract it, you leave it as "update.zip" in your sdcard directory.
I remember seeing a "pictoral" view of what your filesystem should look like in this xda somewhere. Ill try to find it.
No, I am having problem extracting the ROMs from Zip or Rar, so I went and downloaded Memtest86 just to see if there was a RAM problem. That checked out fine after an hour of testing.
Most every Zip or Rar I try to extract have CRC errors, even if it's unrelated to this site. But part of that causes the Update.zip not to extract at all and I only get the "recovery" folder and Command and the Update.zip had an error and doesn't extract.
I then tried it on a laptop with Win7 and I could extract some files then more errors, then I tried a Win XP laptop and that seemed to extract the files fine.
My latest is now the Gtab is bricked, stuck trying to install recovery that never ends. So I looked up for the USB driver and nvflash and the ROM that goes with that and the Gtab doesn't show up as a removable drive so I can transfer the files on there. I have copied them to SDcard but I can't get that to read the data.
So, at this point the Gtab is looping and I cannot get back into Clockwork or get it to show as a drive using the USB drivers and the -Vol and Power button.
Currently when I just power on the tablet in red text I get:
Magic value mismatch:
:"
Critical failure: Unable to start kernel.
Unrecoverable bootloader error (0x00000002).
FIXED
PROBLEM FIXED.
I saw another thread stating similar problem, located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026757 and followed the advice of a few people and now the Gtab is working again. Its stock ROM but the main thing is it's working again.

[Q] NOOB, did I brick my nook tablet?

Ok, I rooted my NT using external SD card and was able to toggle between android 2.3.4 and B&N OS. I have been spending days trying to figure out how to upgrade to CM 10.2 (and have been unsuccessful due to endless tutorials posting invalid files). I finally found a tutorial on this forum and there was a part that specifically said to not mess with the drive that my nook was plugged into. Well...too many windows up, too long on forums etc...long story short...I messed with that drive.
So now my NT boots up to the B&N start up screen; but I get a forced restart error and an error message that says that nook root file stopped working. The touch screen doesn't work and I can't do anything but power off.
Is there ANYONE who can help me? I'll be eternally grateful!
You might consider trying this repart.img method described at http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/.
files won't extract
When I googled feverishly for a solution, I did find that website and tried that method. The problem that I'm having with this entire process is that most of these files are invalid, missing a part or corrupted. I've tried using WinRAR and 7-zip and neither program is able to successfully extract the files; this repart img included. This project of mine has turned into a frustrating debacle!
Thank you for your reply, though!
I'd suggest you burn a pre-made SD CM10.x image from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...id-4-3-for-nook-tablet-imgsdc-boot-09aug2013/ and see if you can successfully boot and run it.
If that works you can proceed to restore the internal emmc image either by using the repart.img method or by flashing flash_stock_1.4.2.zip from https://github.com/succulent/acclaim_recovery_sdcard. See also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575489 for potential helpful info and pointers.
When I extract files, this is the message I get from most of the files I unzip. I tried the cm10.2 img file and I couldn't extract it. I included a screenshot of the error message I keep getting. I've tried several different unzip programs and it's always the same error.
Bad download? Redownloaded and same error?

Did you try the alternate mirror on Mediafire http://www.mediafire.com/download/bo2qu6v4qo9p6a2/cm_acclaim_10.2.0-RC0_13OCT2013_HD_SDC_IMG.7z?
Also FWIW I use 7-zip archive manager program (www.7-zip.org/download.html‎).

[Q] Help desperately needed installing Cybermaus Lenovo A789 ROM

Hello,
I'm very close to insanity now with trying to install cybermaus' custom rom for the A789 for the past 6 hours. I followed the instructions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874403
The first thing it tells you to do is read another guide here, which I have read countless times:
http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.nl/2012/05/mt6575-flashing-tutorial.html
I have installed the drivers fine. I have two issues (so far) which are driving me insane:
1. Where on earth am I supposed to be getting this scatter file from? I have downloaded various versions from here there and everywhere over the internet. There is also one in the TWRP_recovery_v2.3.1.1_for_A789.zip file (which is with the ROM file on cybermaus' Dev-Host page) which I have tried (by the way that zip file is mentioned no where in any of these guides so god knows if that is involved or not). Where does the scatter file need to be placed in relation to the rom? When I load the scatter file into Flash Tool I either get all the file locations blank, and all the memory region address, begin address and end addresses all blank as well. Or if I extract the contents of the ROM zip file (A789_ROW_S107_cybermaus_ICS_v3.21.zip) and put the scatter file (one that I found on GSM Forums) into the same folder with the extracted rom contents I get ONLY the BOOTIMG with a location but still no memory addresses and it doesn't work anyway. I cannot get it to find a location of everything in the "Names" column (ie PRELOADER, DSP_BL, MBR, EBR1 etc) as it shows in the guides.I am following the guides exactly and have tried so many things to attempt to do this!
2. How, in gods name, does the A789_ROW_S107_cybermaus_ICS_v3.21 file get flashed at all according to these guides? Is it just me or does the actual ROM not get mentioned at all anywhere in both guides?? I CLEARLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS PROCESS and I don't want to be unfair but I don't feel like it's been explained very well !! Is the scatter file supposed to somehow tell the Flash Tool where the ROM is?? Do they have to be in the same folder?? Does the ROM have to be extracted or it remains as .zip?? Cybermaus himself in another post about scatter files says "I have seen several people asking 'where to find the scatter file'. Well, it comes with the ROM you want to flash. If your ROM file does not come with a scatter file, then is not a ROM file that can be flashed with the flash utility, but with an open recovery." O K, so, where is the one with his rom?? Am I stupid or is it not there?
I have flashed other phones successfully in the past with CWM where the guides had clear instructions on how to download and install CWM, then download the .zip file of the rom and then boot to CWM and install it, however this phone has none of that and I just can't see how this is supposed to work. Other people have clearly been able to do it!
Please can someone guide me a bit and explain to me what I have to do, considering I have followed the guide exactly a billion times and it does not work (for me anyway). Usually I find getting the drivers to work the annoying bit but this whole scatter file thing, WTF???
I would appreciate any help!
Please can someone who has a copy of A789_ROW_S107_cybermaus_ICS_v3.21.zip that THEY KNOW WORKS please upload it to somewhere and please post the link. There seems to be a problem downloading the version that is in the guide in Cybermaus' DevHost site, it downloads extremely slowly and then at the end files are missing every time, I have tried to download it many times on different days, the scatter file and lots of others are missing and sometimes it stops at around 150MB but says it is 100% done.
Please help, this might be what's preventing me from following the guide.

What on earth will it take for Windows 10 to properly mount and read an .img file?

Been trying for days to extract the kernel from Nougat to use it within Marshmallow in order to downgrade with vibration working on nougats bootloader - but for the life of me i can NOT get windows to actually read these files properly. have all kinds of mounting programs, a java based converter that doesnt actually work (sgs2ext4) i end up with this loop of the same lines, and a 0kb converted file. I can mount the regular img file fine, but it will NOT open without some sort of error. the files themselves are just fine as they will properly flash and run when using odin (when compressed into tar.md5)
Tried wthin twrp hoping the file manager might just let me browse through it since the phone is already linux based and can actually see the information... but no dice there either. It doesnt go into further detail than just showing me that theres an img file present, with options to delete, chmod, etc.
what can i do to dig down to this zimage portion of boot.img that everyone insists the kernel is within? (i say insist cuz i havent actually seen it for myself!)
none of the tutorials ive come across address these specific opening errors - other than that the error is happening because windows cant read it
diskinternals wont work, osfmount will mount but i cant read it .... where on earth are these drivers or programs or whatever i need to actually allow me to browse and explore these files properly? and dare i say, recompress them once ive found what im looking for!
i did also try flashify, thinking run nougat, backup kernel, install marshmallow, restore nougat kernel, but it just leads to freezing on boot logo. I need to get within these img files to actually do what i want to successfully, switching out only that one specific zimage part of the file, leaving the rest intact.
very frustrated here, would very much love some help with this...
Try this, helped so much!
