Can`t switch default web browser from stock browser - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I`m having an issue with my stock thunderbolt on latest update, I've been wanting to use a more feature rich browser such as dolphin, but no matter what I do, such as clear default for stock browser or choose make dolphin default browser in dolphin settings the stock browser always returns to the default browser. Just to be clear what I am trying to do is if I click on a link to read more in rssdaemon I want it to open the article in the browser of my choice. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to manage apps & open the current default browser then tap clear default.
To set a new default tap on something that will need a browser (URL links),
when you get the pop up check "set as default" then tap on the browser app that you want to set as default.
This should work, always has for me, but I don't run stock roms.
If you're saying you've done this and it doesn't work, then I apologize and don't really have another suggestion.

Thanks I've tried this but I don't get the popup. Its weird because normally with any other app that can be set as default when I clear the default the button stays grayed out until I set it by the way you explained, but even after I clear the default if I go back to previous (all applications screen) then back into the app the clear default button can be pressed again like it already set itself as the default again.

NEVERMIND
You can thank Apple for suing HTC and HTC for not paying Apple to continue to use the features they had before.
The "App Associations" was removed due to the recent legal shenanigans.
So, either go back to the previous official build, or root and throw a custom rom on there.
Those are your choices for now it seems.
Possible workaround if you plan to keep the updated stock rom.

Oh wow that's some BS. I really hate all this patent nonsense that is going on why don't we just see who can implement the features the best and then let us the consumers decide.

Yeah, the whole thing just stinks!
Here is something else you may try, but I do not know for sure if it will work or apply to the latest Thunderbolt stock rom or not.
in build.prop you will have this line
ro.da1.enable=true
change to
ro.da1.enable=false
then add just below that this line
ro.da1.method=false
This method restores the feature on some roms/devices

Download an app called Home Smack. It's a home switcher but also does browsers and a few others. Works well!

I don't have root so therefore I don't believe this is an option for me, thanks though.
I must say I am very disappointed with HTC's move in the current update, I didn't see any mention of this change, frankly it ticks me off this has been a native feature of android for quite sometime and for HTC to block it makes me loose respect for them and I do believe this will probably be my last device from them, I understand it is in response to Apple, but Android manufactures need to take a stand against all this nonsense from Apple, I know it goes both ways, but this hurting the customer in the end, but then again what company really truely cares, only thing that matters is the bottom line.
Edit: update: Just found out that HTC added option under Settings > Applications > App associations, which allows you to switch what app launched when you click on a url link or whatever else, so cheers!

All android devices had to remove this aspect of the browser. If you think you'll pick up a Samsung and it's going to work that way it won't. They sued Google. Not HTC. All the phone manufacturers were included because they run android.

Force stock browser not to load mobile versions?

The stock browser on my galaxy s2 does not seem to have an option not to load the mobile versions of webpages. It's quite annoying, e.g. mobile Google checkout does not allow editing payment methods.
This is android gingerbread onwhere mod based on Chinese firmware.

In browser type in, about:useragent
Then choose desktop
Otherwise use Opera Mobile and under the advanced menu select Desktop, I know this method works perfectly no more mobile sites with Opera Mobile
thank you for solving this problem for me. It's been bugging me ever since I got the phone and the only negative issue I've experienced mainly because I've not had time to have a good old geek weekend just playing with it whilst pretending to look painfully efficient using phrases like "work hard, play hard and 24/7" It sounds like I'm a f***ing Mars Bar.
bluppfisk, do you have a location for that onwhere firmware? The only site I can find it on is in Chinese and I can't seem to download from it.
It doesn't work, the about:useragent option reverts back to "custom"

As soon as you Exit the browser it will be reset to Custom. Permanent fix you could do from here,

Change default browser settings from mobile view to desktop!

Hey guys just wanted to share this with everyone in case no one knew this. You can change the default setting on your browser so it doesn't show the mobile sites all the time. To do this type in the browser address bar about: debug then press go. Nothing will happen but then go to settings and scroll all the way down til u see UAString. Click that and you will see ALL the options it gives you, like iphone, desktop, ipad, android ect. Hope this helps!!

Didn't work for me. I've done this for my tablet and that worked fine. Just to confirm, I should type "about: debug", correct?
Yes u it NO SPACE them click go. Dont get out of the browser and click settings and scroll allllll the way to the bottom

Confirming that it works in Maxtron browser as well.

This works, thanks for the post. One thing I notice is that if you reboot your phone, or if you end the Browser task, you need to re-do about:debug for it to load the custom UA again.

yes I can confirm that after you end the browser you have to redo it.
Is there a way to make the user agent string stick so we don't have to keep changing it back after a reboot or closing the browser completely? This browser is forcing mobile sites with no way to get the full site unles the website has a link for desktop version on their page. This and the fact there's no way to go directly to my home page using menu just sucks.

[Q] Stock browser desktop mode after ICS

I upgraded to ICS yesterday and everything seems great. The only issue I have is that I can't find out how to put the stock browser into desktop mode. I found a menu option for "request desktop
site" but it seems to need to be checked everytime you visit the site. Any ideas how to get this turned on permanently?
There may be a way to do it in debug mode but luckily someone has made a version of the stock browser with just such an option easily available!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439200
Had the same problem just ended up getting ics + browser from the market. Fixed my problem.
wish i had an answer...
probably why everyone uses other browsers like dolphin, or opera...
Ya its weird. The option to do it was in honeycomb but they seem to have forgotten to include it in ICS
You have to type in "about:debug" then go into settings, then into developer or something. Should be in there, under like UA String

I don't seem to have this problem with bookmarked sites. Once I set the drop menu option, add to bookmarks, it will work every time.
For non bookmarked sites it seems to be iffy. Most of the time it continues to work, but sometimes not.
ICS Stock Browser desktop option has something seriously wrong. I cant get pages to load after enabling it. I have to go into system settings and clear cache to make it load pages again. Anyone else having this problem?

I think that this is one of the biggest problems with the stock ICS browser, and its one that has made it unusable for me. I'm moving to Dolphin HD until Google release some kind of fix for this, preferably returning to the old way of setting the user string.
Download ICS browser in the market, the stock is total embarrassment to ICS.

Make delivery report simpler?

First android device and loving it and I was just wondering if it was possible to make delivery report simpler with messaging app? By that I mean not to get voice and notification every time but rather it would just have little tick, change color or add delivery time in the app itself? Or is that something that can't be done?
I read people recommending go sms pro, handcent and such apps and I tried those 2 but didn't really like them.
Possible.
Use a different messagin app like GO SMS etc.

Might be because I'm new but I really didn't like that app. Read there are ads in app comments, don't really feel safe allowing 3rd party app to control my messages and it kinda felt bloated, too many options, too flashy, too much to do.
I'm perfectly fine with built in one just want at least the sound gone.

I tried it, maybe I can customize it to look more like standard app, is it safe tho? As in no weird sms sent, copied somewhere etc?
Yeah I know tooon of people use it but I'm still paranoid
I didn't like that it had ton of options I don't need and maybe it will hog more memory/power etc. I'll dl dark theme, was too bright also but that's something else
Oh and I can't download it from store, it says something about not available in your country, gotta install from different source.
Edit: Made it the way I like, using it now.

[Q] Stop Making Update Reset Default App

I'm tired of Android asking to set the default app for some actions like opening a link, writing an sms and so on after EVERY update of the default app.. Why on every update of Chrome BETA I have to set again that it is my deafult browser?
Each update of the keyboard is even worse, I have also to put the check in settings to enable the keyboard.. imho it's boring
I found other people talking about this on the net like:
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...-android-remember-default-apps-after-upgrades
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...why-do-updates-make-me-reset-default-app.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541119
Does someone of you agree with me?
I also found this issue, and I voted it, do you think is a good idea to vote this issue?? Is there a way to give this issue (or bug imho) a wide appeal??
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=26111
Every operating system does the same thing, you just don't realise it. Android has space constraints, so instead of adding to a database that would grow and grow, it rebuilds it when apps are installed and removed. Believe me, this is better than the old way of Android where apps that were no longer installed were set as the default and lots of errors would happen.

I think that there would be a difference between installing/uninstalling and updating an app that I already use.. why ask me again if I want to use Chrome Beta as the default browser if I didn't installed a new browser, I didn't uninstalled Chrome Beta but I only updated it ? total nonsense, imho

You also have to remember that when you update an app it gives you a new apk. Which means all permissions for the old apk are now gone and you have to give it to the new one. Just something you will learn to live with.
I'm not saying that it's a bad implementation because it is a problem easy to solve or something else.. I'm just saying that from the user point of view, and I'm a user, losing the default app preference each update it's boring and I'm sure that this situation could have been handled in a different way, allowing me to not repeat the same action like a robot... like setting the app that visualize my word documents, pdf, photos, my favorite borwser, messaging app and so on

It is far better then the way it used to be and with the way android handles security it is the way it has to be. Trust me. You must be new to android as you would not find it that bad compared to the old way as talked about above.
