[Q] Predictive test word completion and suggestions - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Galaxy S3 today and the first thing that is driving me nuts is the predictive text and word suggestions.
When I am typing I would like suggestions to appear in the bar but I don't want the phone to automatically change the words I am typing without my clicking on the word in the bar. I had this working on my Gingerbread ROM on my HD2 but I can't seem to get it to do this on the Galaxy S3. What setting am I missing here??

That's not what I am after. Doing that completely disables the suggested words bar. I want the suggested words bar but I don't want it to auto-complete or auto-correct my words as I type as it always gets things wrong. What I want is to suggest words in the bar as I am typing and if I see a word in the bar I want I will tap it. This is how it was on my Gingerbread ROM.

That's a completely idiotic comment. If you don't know then just say so.
This was functionality that existed on Gingerbread ROM default keyboard I had so its not hard to understand that it could well be there on the ICS GS3 ROM also.

Hi
I found the swift key 3 keyboard very good.

Swift key is nice keyboard app.

+1 for SwiftKey, honestly it's better than the iPhone keyboard. Amazing and what it does.

Same problem here. If it suggests a word and you hit SPACEBAR, it will append that word. Horrible design.
I switched to Go keyboard for this reason alone.

Thanks guys. I'll give Swift Key 3 a try if its not possible to change the behaviour on the default Samsung one.

If you leave Predictive Text On, but instead go into Predictive Text settings and turn off everything in there, it will show suggestions at the top of the keyboard and not change what your typing

That sort of comment is what makes people not even deserve to have a computer, let alone a phone.

[Q] Can you restrain the keyboard?

Is there a way to keep the keyboard from popping up (temporarily)? So I want to keep the keyboard from showing on a certain website.
Here's the deal: on a website I like to visit there is a small animation and a place to type in your response. The keyboard pops up and covers the animation. I actually don't care about typing my response - I just want to see the animation. Thanks

Not exactly the answer you are looking for ... but you can close the keyboard by pressing the back key once.
--L.
One way you could do it is to download Smart Keyboard Pro and go to Settings --> Advanced Settings --> Hide in Portrait.

TouchPal keyboard has that. When it pops up, there's an arrow pointing down on the right side and it'll disappear. swiftkey has that feature too .

The thing is that the keyboard doesn't disappear quick enough before the animation starts and it is a quick animation so I miss the beginning. In case you are wondering what the heck I am doing... I am learning ASL fingerspelling. A hand spells letters of a word at different speeds for practice so if I miss the first letter, I miss the word.
Thanks for all your help everyone!

My suggestion will do it instantly. I know there's a free trial version of Smart Keyboard on the Play Store...try that one and see if it has that feature.

[Q] Spell Check

I am surprised to find Spell Checker absent on my Galaxy s3 inspite of it being ICS.
I have been using ICS on HTC sensation before this phone and have gotten use to the automatic spell check in ICS which underlines in red the wrongly spelled words. Pressing these gives you options to correct it with suggestions or to add to dictionary.
Any one found a solution for this yet?

Got the same problem here. I really liked the red underlined misspelled words on my Galaxy S with stock ICS. Why did Samsung remove this feature?
It is on mine under Settings, Language and Input, Samsung Keyboard Settings (the gear icon on the right hand side), Predictive Text. Can you select Predictive Text by tapping on the word?
Tapped
Mine wont do it either....
Does anyone get a red line under misspelled words?
It seems that word correction only appears in the voice dictate mode on S3. I have predictive text enabled, but don't get the misspelled words underlined
I would donate to get this fixed on a non rooted g3

Simple solution to this problem.
1.Go to playstore download jellybean keyboard.
2.go to language and use this keyboard as default.
3.click on the settings icon, choose show corrections suggestions to always show.
and thats it. problem solved.
if this helped please hit the thanks button below enjoy the SIII !
Was able to find the keyboard and install it however it didn't underline the misspelled words on the S3 as advertised in the hype around the keyboard. I that because that feature is turned off in the ROM?

[Q] Teach Samsung Keyboard New Words?

I LOVE certain features of the stock keyboard (ie: the handwriting and the separate number row) but I'm having trouble teaching the keyboard new words. I tried it like it works in swype where you type it out once and then click it in the little suggestion row, and it SEEMS to work...but it actually doesn't.
Example: If I'm typing a text and I type a word it doesn't know and click it in the box, if I use that word again in the same text, or possibly even in another text sent soon afterword, it will suggest the word when I "swype" it. But then if I go to a browser and try to do that word in a search box it didn't actually learn it.
Is there any way to reliably teach this thing new words? The help and tutorials that come with the keyboard on the phone are less than impressive.
So far the handwriting and separate numbers make it worth it to use, but i'm growing tired of typing out melbell every time I do anything.
Settings > language and input > personal dictionary. Hope this helps!

No no... I had this problem. Until I found the missing setting. They are a bit hidden...
Settings > Language and Input > Samsung keyboard settings (click on the gear to the right of samsung keyboard) > Turn on predictive text if its not on. AND also click on the wording of Predictive Text... That is the hidden part. There is a whole other menu if you click on the wording of predictive text. Then enable personalized data. Bang.

You can capitalize if you Swype up past the top of the keyboard then come back down and continue swiping. Like for "hello" start at the h, Swype upwards, then over to the e. Hard to explain, but let me know if you get it.

That's what I assumed too because that's how Swype works (which is the keyboard I'm used to), but I haven't been able to get that to work on the Samsung keyboard.

[Q] Gesture Typing and "bad" words

I have a Nexus 4 running stock 4.2.1 (rooted) and here is my issue with the gesture typing and predictive text. Anytime I try to use a word that google apparently believes is not appropriate like "****" I have to stop and and type it out. Mind you that spell check does not think it's a misspelled word so there is no option to add it to the User Dictionary. It just will not show up as an option for either predictive text or gesture typing. Obviously these words have somehow been identified in google's stock dictionary so that they are not part of the pool of suggested words - probably along the lines of how the auto-complete of google searches are now censored.
Does anybody have a workaround for this? It's incredibly annoying and I don't like the fact that google is dictating what standard English words can and cannot be part of gesture typing.
One thought I had was that the stock dictionary probably has those words marked with a simple boolean flag, so if somebody knew how to access the dictionary and reset that flag, the problem would be solved. I don't know much about android development but this can't be too hard. If I had the time I'd undertake the project myself.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Hey yeah I had the same problem... It's stupid that they blocked swear words... The only thing I figured out to get past it is that if you type in any word that isn't in the dictionary and select to add it you can type in anything you want, before confirming adding the word, including swear words and then you can type them with gesture typing. At least it works on my rooted Verizon galaxy nexus running jb 4.2.1 sorcery v4... Peace...

How do you add words to the dictionary? I'm very Android literate, and have been using Swype for a long time. The problem I have is that sometimes when I press on a word that it suggests, but doesn't recognize, it will give me the option to add it to the dictionary. Other times it will bring a box up above the word with several suggestions. It seems erratic and not very consistent.

Settings >> language and input >> Personal dictionary and then add in whatever swears/words you want and it'll work when using the gesture typing. At least it works for me.

Predictive text after 4.1.2 upgrade.

As title suggests, I updated my phone yesterday. Now, when typing, if I spell something wrong, instead of changing automatically when I press space, it doesnt change the word, even though its highlighted blue. Is this a bug or feature and its very annoying ane may force me to flash back to older version. I cant see any options in the settings menu like before, just new options to sync spelling with facebook and Twitter etc... thanks for help.
Works fine for me
There are no more options anymore in settings for predictive text. You use to be able to edit your own words and specific predictive text data but your cant edit anything now so unsure what to do. Im sure I have read else where others having the same problems?
mine is also doin the same thing. Also noticed it no longer gives you the option to change the full stop to something else without holding
gotta be a bug. why highlight in blue if it no longer has a function anything? This is going to be very annoying.
It's what made me stop using the Samsung keyboard, prediction only seems to work when you use continuous input (swype) but even with that enabled, if you tap out each letter it will not work.
Glad its not just me anyway!
Meh, Android 4.2 keyboard rocks
I like the the way the keyboard behaves now. I can type my words without the auto correcting putting in the wrong words for me inadvertently and not having problems putting in words the the prediction doesn't know about.
I will also confirm that after updating to 4.1.2 stock - the auto-correct/predictive text system in the stock samsung keyboard seems to be no longer functioning correctly.
When typing the words are highlighted in blue however upon hitting space the word isn't corrected

never bothered with stock Android keyboards or Samsung's effort at "continuous text input" (well I gave it 5 minutes and kicked it into touch).
There is only one keyboard for continuous text input, and why would you want to tap letters individually any way? - its called Swype...its an absolute MUST.
google it, go to website and download swype beta installer
You guys are right, auto correct has been disabled in 4.1.2. I'm really hoping it's re enabled for the next release because I've never been a fan of aftermarket keyboards. I prefer the stock one. I would downgrade to 4.1.1 but I was getting some bugs on that which have been fixed on 4.1.2. Let's all hope it's re enabled for us!
Same problem here and I hate it. I've now switched to SwiftKey because of it.

Same here. VERY ANNOYING! Why change something fundamental on the keyboard in this way? It's awful.
Regardless of what your keyboard preference is, you become accustomed to using it and it's ways until you can almost type blindfolded. Making changes like this just bugs the hell out of me!
