[Q] Looking to Upgrade - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I have a G2. I've had it for quite sometime now and my contract is up with tmobile. I'm looking to upgrade. Its either the Amaze, Sensation, or One S. I know HTC has gotten out of the mass production of cell phones with the release of the One S. My questions are is this going to be like how apple releases only 1 iPhone or no? Also, which would you guys recommend. I don't care much for the One S's camera. But the development behind the amaze is virtually non existent. Sensation is something I've always wanted, but all 3 seem to be with sense. Which I hate. Help a guy out as I would like others opinions. Thank you in advance!

Best Phone I've Owned (In My Opinion)

I know this has nothing to do with anything but I just wanted to express my opinion here regarding this device. Since I took the "Android" Plunge in Feb 2010, I've owned a couple of Android devices (CliQ, Nexus One, Evo, Epic, Nexus S, Nexus S 4G), but this phone just tops all of them. The battery life for it being a "DUAL CORE" is freaking fenominal. It feels good on the hands. It's real quick, no lag that I can see and besides having to hijack a dock at a Sprint Store for 1.5 minutes to root it, I've been very happy with this device. I really don't know what it will take for me to switch over to something else. I got everything I need with this thing. Am I the only one who feels this way about the Photon?
I feel the same. I wont even trade for the sgs2.

Good to hear...
... I have an EVO and I'm seriously considering making the jump when it's made available to employees, rumored to be next week (I work for Sprint).
My only hesitation is having originally come from the Samsung Moment where there was hardly any development support. After getting the EVO, it was refreshing to see the amount of support for the device. I do hope that the Photon gets the amount of development support it deserves, considering everyone raves about it.

[Q] Not just your average help me decide thread.

Alright, I am not here to discuss the hardware of the HTC Amaze. I am in the workings of getting a new phone obviously my choices lay between the Amaze and Galaxy S2. I have had an android phone since the G1 and now have the G2. My question (and I am not hating) even though this phone is in the early stages of its lifecycle, do you guys think that the dev support for this phone will be like it is for the G2?
I realize the hard work the devs are doing for this phone (xboarder) and like, I appreciate all the work they do, cause without them we would have nothing. If I knew half the things you guys do about the android file system I am just wondering what the possibilites are?
Please no flaming or trolling, very disrespectful.

I think that most members around here would agree that the devs are waiting for ICS to be released for the Amaze before they start doing some hardcore stuff.
The ROMs are here, don't get me wrong but we only have about 3 or 4 devs by my count that are pushing out all those ROMs.
Xboarder himself has got like 4 to 5 that he already has out or is working on.
I'd like to believe that when ICS hits we would draw other devs.
Although that's not a for sure thing.
Either way, having it announced that ICS WILL come to the Amaze is enough of a reason to pick it up as your first choice, right?
To sum it all up we're waiting for ICS and true S-Off.
I'm sure with those two things in hand ROMs will take off.
Hope that helps.
I totally agree on the count of ICS, a lot of the devices are going through the same "dry spell." It does help, it nice to have a little reassurance, you know?
Thanks
The Amaze has great dev support (albeit from one, but he's awesome) but I don't think it'll be anything like the G2 was. The G2 had two main things going for it: first, it was a stock Android experience. Second, Steve Kondik (cyanogen) had told many people that he was going to be using the device as a daily driver. So many devs flocked his way. Let's just say the only reason I have the Amaze right now is because my G2 stopped working and I didn't know where to get another one. It was all the phone I needed at the time, and was trying to hold out for the Nexus.
I think the GS2 has better support for now, but that should change once ICS drops. If you really want a ton of development support, I say go for the Nexus. Me, I'm happy with the Amaze and QuickSense!

Good point, I wish I could wait for the Nexas, but I am selling my G2 to a family member and I told them I would this month. <-Dilemma
What made you choose the Amaze, if you don't mind me asking? I love my HTC phones, it would be different having a Samsung.
I made the same lineage, g1 to g2. And tbh I couldn't imagine using a phone that isn't htc (quality wise), I know the dev'ing will never be @ the g2 level, but we have some awesome devs and a strong device with promise of ics.
The zero lag shutter and unified sense 3.0 ui was an easy sell for me. If Samsung had produced the all white ver. sans that terrible touch wiz at the time of my purchase I might have made a different choice.

It compared them side by side in the store and for all the hype of the SAMOLED+ screen, it kinda reminded me of the original iPhone - less pixels stretched over a bigger screen. The Amaze looked great. PPI is where it's at!
I would rather have had the Samsung from a development standpoint (no locked bootloader and such) but the screen in the GS2 sucked balls.

^agreed on both counts^
Which is why I'm still considering the Nexus... no locked bootloader BS and it has an even higher PPI than the Amaze (over 300 vs ~250). The best of both worlds!
I for one believe development is doing great for the lack of open sources. The thing is that the amaze is really great straight out of the box that little development actual needs to be done except we all want custom kernels which would help our battery life and heck make it even smoother.
A lot of other phones development section has a lot of support but not all the roms and kernels being developed are being used, so you shouldn't compare and say since some phones has a lot of roms it has better support. I for one want quality over quantity.
But honestly once things are fully released for the amaze, developers will come. However, not many would want to compile a ROM or kernel from scratch like x and faux are working on. remember this phone is barely 2 months old. You'll see a huge expansion by January.

Can't you just install Launcher Pro (or similar)? That should replace Touchwiz.

TouchWiz and Sense both are throughout the entire OS. Replacing the launcher only really fixes the homescreen.

Ah. I thought the problem was with the homescreen arrangement. I acutally like the Sense enhancements like the extra widgets & etc.
Last month I was forced to decide between an Amaze and a Galaxy S2.
I also had a G1 and a G2. I used the vibrant for a while but i preferred my G2 mainly b/c of the keyboard. I played with the Amaze and the S2. I preferred the amaze because i would choose sense over touchwiz. And what really drew me to the amaze was the qHD resolution. If the s2 had a qHD resolution, i think i'd still be deciding what i want. Hope this helps

[Q] Should i get an Atrix coming from HTC Desire S?

Even though i am very satisfied with my DS i am considering getting a new dual core phone. Do you recommend the Atrix or should i wait for some new phones? How is the ICS development going on? All in all i have the impression the Atrix is a rock solid phone. Thx in advance.
Only you can answer this question.
1. Try them both out.
2. See what suits you best as you might spend a very long time with it.
3. Check things like RAM, Processor speed, OTA updates from the company as these are important.
4. ICS might not be available on Atrix but CM9 will be -but it will run the kernels of Gingerbread/CM7.
5. The choice is yours. Listen to your heart, use the force and please read other similar threads (about choosing between other phones vs Atrix) before posting a thread. I hope i don't sound rude here, it's not my intention.
I definitely like my atrix and don't plan to upgrade until we see the quad core phones. At this time, I wouldn't switch to an atrix from the HTC Desire S if it meant extending my cellular contract.
I'm not sure how cellular companies work in the EU though, so If you don't have to worry about a contract extension and the atrix is reasonably priced I would go for it.
For me personally, the Atrix does so much more "that I like" then any other phone out there. All I can say is, if this one breaks...I will replace it with another Atrix. Just depends what you want out of a phone??
Same for me. I bought my Atrix after a DHD and a DS, and until now it's my best phone ever. I will change it only for a quad-core.
Great phone, great dev support from a bunch of great people.
Atrix Dev Team
Nottach
Faux
Sam Cripp
MIUI Team
Evo
Dorian (Doesn't post his stuff here)
Many others. They've done a great job making the Atrix one of the best phones out there even to date in my opinion.
CM9 and MIUI in the works, it should be around for awhile.
sold my Nexus S today to CEX for £212 after buying it from the Carphone Warehouse for £199 last week and got an A grade mint condition Atrix for £188 locked to T mobile, it cost me £5 to unlock. I am very pleased as I nearly got one a few weeks ago, but the price was to high..... ;-)
If you like sense ui then I wouldn't go for atrix...

[Q] Which Android phone to buy?

I'm buying a new phone and I want an android one. But there are many android phones and so can't decide which one I should buy. Which one may be the best android phone?
Please give me some advices.
These are the phones I think they are great..
SG3 ( should I wait till this out? and will it the best one? )
SG2 ( now this device probably isn't the best one anymore, right? )
HTC sesation XE
HTC sensation
HTC Evo 3D
Sorry for if I did anything wrong and please point out what I am doing wrong since this is my very first post in this forum.
And sorry for my English.
Android Devices
I believe there are several things to consider when choosing an Android device to buy.
First, what do you plan on doing with it? [beyond just using it as a phone ]
ROM development, app/game development, gaming, scuba diving, etc.
Second, what's your budget? This is definitely the most important factor, since international GSM versions of the phones you listed are rather pricey [approx 500 - 700 USD]
Lastly, network compatibility. [supported bands]
You probably want to make sure you get a phone that supports your carrier... although this isn't absolutely necessary
If you are using it for development of ROMs, any upcoming device is recommended, since they can always use more devs, though you should be wary of locked bootloaders [such as those found in Motorola devices]
Devices suggested: GS3, HTC One S/X, Galaxy Nexus.
If you're using it for app/game development, any Nexus device would be your best bet, as they set the standards for Android
Devices suggested: Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus.
If you just want to play games, then grab the latest and greatest!
Devices suggested: GS2, GS3, HTC One S/X, ASUS Padfone [whenever it comes out ]
I personally have a Galaxy Nexus [GSM], and vouch for it's delicious Ice Cream Sandwich
If this helped at all, I'd appreciate it if you clicked "thanks"
Sorry, I couldn't find the thanks button but will do it when I see the thanks button. But thanks anyway. It helped.
But is galaxy nexus's battery life good?
Hi everyone!
I am sorry if I am not supposed to post this question somewhere else
Well,as the title says,I need your opinion for a purchase I want to do on a Android smartphone.
To be honest I am confused!
Okay to be more specific, the phones I really liked most are the following :
1)Samsung Galaxy S III
2)LG OPTIMUS 4X HD P880
3)HTC ONE X
And there is one rumored :
4)LG LS970 Eclipse 4G LTE(not compatible with my country's carriers, but I believe that this phone will be released to other countries too)
Now you might be wondering why am I looking for rumored phones, well consider this as a stupid thing that I always do with things I want to buy.
According to the budget,I will say that I can give 500-700$
I want the phone mostly, for emails, organizer, calendar, browsing on the internet, movies and most important for development.
So which one you recommend?I have heard tons of things for each phone. Please justify your answer. It would be really helpful!
P.S.: I have posted accidentally almost the same thing in a wrong sub-forum!Sorry for that mods!!!
Okay I got +1000000 ( ) for HTC ONE X from orb3000.What you guys think?
Based on your needs
I think it does matter more why you wanna use that device?
So, it should meet your interests and your needs.
SG2 vs SG3= For me there are no difference in terms of my needs as well applications. But for you maybe you got fond of the new features
Budget does matter
Are you referring to my question hweidi or to the initial one?Because if you do refer to my question I mention all the things that you ask on the #4 post on this page.
take something from the new HTC
I see that people start hating a bit Samsung. Why is that?Is it because of the design and the plastic they use to make the phones?
Xperia S?

I would want to know about your opinions too.. Actually I am a Symbian (N8) user and was planning to go for Nokia 808.., but then I felt SGS III hardware is the best at the moment.. I know mostly everything about Symbian and if I will ditch it and go for SGSIII, that will be my first Android phone and considering my zero knowledge in Android .. I am a little bit wondering whether I should make that leap since I love modding stuff and since it will be my first Android device, it will take much longer to learn about it to get ready and start exploring stuff in Android..
So do you guys think I should move to SGS-III?
Also I tried to find some very very basic FAQs threads about Android but couldn't so if anyone could lead me to a right direction, I will be glad and thankful.
Thanks.
As for the nokia I would say that it was my favorite company,I am a proud owner of a Nokia N900.Unfortunately due to its financial problems Nokia is sinking like a boat.It doesn't have money for research and development of innovative technologies.Add to that, the fact that Microsoft bought it and now most of the new Nokia devices, except for a few others like the 808,run Windows Phone, which in my personal opinion still needs way to much development to reach Android/iOS(although I am a hater of the iPhone and not a Microsoft hater). Also,Google is the new superpower/master of the game and almost everyday comes with something new.Think also that Samsung,LG,HTC,Motorola,NVidia(and eventually Intel) they possess money for hardware development(CPUs,GPUs,GPS chips,NFC chips, batteries, camera sensors, pcb reference designs,screens,etc....).So basically, you should move to android.Mind that companies/descent software developers make software for people who probably don't know that much from technology and that is why they try to make it as easy and comfortable and flawless in use.As for you you won't have problem to learn the use of an Android phone and as for the fact that you want to do mods/hacks to an Android phone if you are a Unix/Linux user you won't have a problem as the philosophy is the almost same(not precisely but almost). But even if you are not a Unix/Linux user then again you won't face any problems!
It's all about on how much research you do on something.
That's my personal opinion on your question.
As for my question to help other members to answer my question what concerns me most is if it is better to have qualcomm(quad core)/exynos/tegra 3 and adreno/mali/nvidia ulp combination?

I wouldn't recommend the Sensation series and Evo 3D. If you are on a budget then you can consider the Galaxy S2 or if you have money to burn, you may want to go for the HTC One Series devices (One S, One X. Not One V).

Note: Microsoft did not buy Nokia. They only went into partnership.
As for the answer to your question, if you do not browse the web and/or play games frequently on your phone (means you are not a heavy user), any of those are fine. If you are a heavy gamer, I would recommend the Tegra 3 + ULP Geforce GPU. For battery life, the Snapdragon S4 performs better than the Tegra. For normal day to day usage (web browsing etc), I would recommend Exynos.

[Q] Thouhgts about trading HTC One X+...

Hello fellow One X+ users! So I have a situation, or rather a 'first world problem' (I know, I know...) haha. I have the ATT version of the One X+ and feel I have been in a on-off love relationship with the phone with the whole Tegra ordeal and the hit or miss battery life. I really do like the phone, especially with the nice 64GB cushion, amazing screen, camera and LTE. But with that, versus the international version, I know it has been the black sheep (sadly). I have been looking into alternatives to trade for, such as the Nexus 4, Galaxy S3, heck, even the Lumia 920. But I want to hear what others have to say in regards to this topic. Have any of you had any experience with other devices as I listed (or others) and how do they compare. The only thing that is holding me back is the storage space which Nexus pales in comparison, of course.
I am sure I am not the only one with this question (hopefully have not overlooked similar posts here) So what are your thoughts guys? Let me know what you think. :cyclops:
