[Q] Media volume stays muted?! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It doesn't seem to matter what the volume is set to, my media volume (almost) always has a slash through it and doesn't play media sounds (games, music, etc). I'm not sure what causes it or how I can fix it. The phone seems to do it randomly.
It hasn't always been this way, it comes and goes. I've watched Netflix and heard the music to Tiny Tower which both use the Media volume. Restarting my phone has shown to help at times but so far it always comes back. I'm hoping a firmware update can fix it.
I have no audio apps for monitoring volumes and none of the Motion settings that would affect audio are turned on. I keep my phone on vibrate 24/7 but still wish to have the media volume work separately than the ringer volume. I have (self-taught) experience in rooting, applying mods, general android app development, as well as every day usage with the android OS and this has me incredibly annoyed that I can't figure this out.
How can I explicitly mute/unmute my media volume?
Stock, no root, Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III (SPH-L710) Android 4.0.4 Hardware version L710.14

Do you mute/ vibrate from notifications - I can imagine that will override the sound settings. Set ringtone to zero and media to desired level?

No, I only ever change the volume through the volume rocker when I'm in an app that uses the media volume. I also never change the volume of notifications, they're muted and set to vibrate. The only volume I ever use or change is the media volume.

Very Low Media Audio

I'm coming from a D1 and was used to its speaker volume. I've noticed that in most all apps (skype, youtube, sirius xm) my Tbolt's output volume is pretty low. I've got the slider up as high as it goes, and it doesn't come close to the output of my last phone. Is this something with the ROM I'm running? Are people with stock phone's noticing the same problem? Is there a setting I'm missing?
Thanks
Did you change the media volume in sound settings or just the overall volume of the phone?

Bluetooth Car Stereo Volume Control Work Around

So I don't know if many or any other people are having or have had this problem(could be related specifically to my car, but unlikely as you'll see later), but I feel like I've heard others mention it. I've now had this issue on multiple roms, from saurom 7.1 GB to now PA cm10 2.0 with flapps OC kernel.
The problem:
When connected to the car stereo via Bluetooth, I'd lose volume control on the dash and only have its control on the phone.
Why does this suck?
Well having to do this to adjust volume can be very annoying for several reasons, like:
1. Having to grab the phone every time you want to adjust the volume
2. Slower volume increases and decreases
3. Depreciating the phone hardware faster
4. Scaling the volume in much bigger, less precise(sometimes it will be either too loud/soft) increments
5. Potentially much lower overall loudness (depending on where the car's own volume was at when it lost control)
6. Potentially more distortion (raising the phone's volume to max to compensate increases distortion regardless of where car volume is at).
What I soon began to realize is that it happens from certain apps, like Pandora (which is usually my go to), but not for the system standard music app like Apollo (which is why I don't think the problem source is related to my car).
So, the work around I figured out for myself is loading both, pausing Pandora, playing Apollo to get volume control, then holding down the back button to kill Apollo(make sure this is enabled in developer options in phone settings), then Pandora should start playing again all by itself and still have volume control. Haven't tested it yet on other music apps, but I suspect it should work the same.
Hope this helps if anyone else had this problem.

This is my first post so bare with me. I have been wanting to use cm10 but I have the same exact problem. In my 2012 scion xb I have bt audio and use spotify and tune in radio for everything. I was using the same method as you to control volume, but when i used synergy rom for my s3 I had the car controls (dash and steering wheel) back. Although I have to re-link the bt every time I Turn my car off.... didn't have to do that with my tbolt, it stayed lined even after i shut my car on and off. Still love my s3 better though lol

[Q] App to Bind Ringer Volume and Notification Volume

For the life of me I don't know why Samsung continues to build this way, but it is what it is. I use to use Quick Settings on my other phone but now the linking option is greyed out. I tried another app that is called Volume Control, and it kinda works but seems to be overridden by the stock changes. Has anyone found a solution to this simple but really annoying 'feature'?
I've always felt you should be able to bind media volume as well - or at least make it jump to silent when you go to vibrate or silent mode.At least you can get to it quickly with the settings icon when you change volume. On my Incredible I always had to go through the system options to bring down media volume to prevent noise before starting something.
I dislike the volume binding, the ICS leak for thunderbolt was bound together and it was annoying. I like to have only my ringer and alarm on when I sleep, I don't want to be annoyed with emails or texts. I always used Audio Manager Pro which you can create custom profiles and schedule those profiles.

[FIX] [KK, LP] [Z-Z5] Fix low earpiece volume during calls

Fix low earpiece volume during calls the easy way. Been looking for a fix and there was nothing, then I started flashing all sorts of sound mods and although they did improve the speakers for sound and music and speakerphone, the sound ftom the earpiece was still too low sometimes even in quiet room (during calls with people with bad microphones).
Finally a there was an easy fix, download an app from the play store called "Volume Controll". It will present you with more elaborate volume controls than the default built in sonys controls. Here just bump your in call volume to 80% and voila, you'll get louder in call earpiece volume without flashing media profiles xml or similar hack. You can also controll the loudnes while in call with volume keys.
Posted just because I found nothing about this and this is an essential smartphone function, almost exchanged my phone for an LG G3 cause of this single issue.
Would you mind posting the Play Store link?

Here it is, I believe other similar apps can do this. When prompted to upgrade after trial is over just tap outside the dialog box and continur using as normal. I turned off all notifications to hide profile switcher.

Media volume beeps on adjustment

Sometimes the phone will beep, even with headphones/headset while adjusting media volume in a music app or youtube. Restarting the phone makes this stop for a while. It's beeping like it normally does when you adjust ringer volume but it happens with media volume sometimes. Once it starts, it wont stop happening with adjustments until restarted. Any ideas whats going on and how to fix this?
EDIT: Android N Stock, latest OTA
