So, we all by now have heard of the awesomeness that is MIUI. Im running the Rodrigez port of the ROM, and its fantastic.
One thing about this ROM is that it stores all installed apps on the homescreen, much like the iPhone. There is no launcher. So for people like myself (and IM sure many others), its pretty time consuming arranging all 132 apps on the homescreens the way I want them!
I know in ADW launcher there is a setting to save your homescreen layout to your sd card, which can be conveniently restored when needed. I used this all the time with Cyan and Enomther, simply because it saved time after a fresh install.
Im asking the awesome coders of XDA if they think there is any way of either writing a command/app that will save your homescreen layout into a file on your sd card that can later be restored? I dont know if its something that can be written into the ROM, as Im not a coder. I just know it would save a lot of time in using this ROM. I just had a problem with my sd card and had to repartition it, meaning that I ll need to set all 132 apps on the homescreen again to the order I want them
I know that a nandroid can do this, but a separate application would be nice, as MIUI needs an ext 3 parition for apps2ext to work and everything I do a Nandroid +ext backup, I always have problems restoring it.
Any devs or coders out there know if this is possible?

Why would you want your homescreens cluttered with apps, I'm running Rod's MIUI, but I'm using Launcher Pro because I have to have a app drawer. And, I think most Android users aren't trying to make their Android phones like the Iphone. If you haven't already, check out the screenshots in the beginning of Themes & App's forum, most users are using alt. launchers to customize the UI. I didn't see one shot with anyone running stock MIUI

I have to agree. It seems like we are taking a step back in the evolution of the os. Like who seriously wants all apps mixed up in a clutter on your homescreen? But for the 5 people who do prefer this, I could see why they would want this save option included.

I have to disagree, MIUI is a huge step forward. Regular xda members may not like the iPhone-ness, but I'm willing to bet that the majority of the public tend to gravitate towards it. How do you think they still sell iPhones, anyways? lol.
I look at MIUI as a breath of fresh air. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that we needed a break from Sense and stock for a while.
That being said, I have defected back to CM for now. Main reason: Lockscreen music controls. I love the MIUI lockscreen, but having to unlock, open music app, and press skip just wasn't safe for me, as the only time I use my phone for music is while driving. Personal preference, but pretty important to me.

Never knew people liked that iPhone-esque home screen. Always thought installing another launcher on top of it was mandatory for the Android crowd. Step back indeed, unless you think gravitating towards the iPhone's OS' simplicity is step forward according to the poster right above me. You can use Titanium Backup to backup the data portion of the MIUI launcher, restoring that will restore the layout.

It's a step forward in the fact that developers are thinking outside the box and working on the framework/user-interface, instead of focusing all efforts on the "behind-the-scenes" aspect of Android. Don't get me wrong, I love CyanogenMod and TheOfficial, and appreciate all the work the countless devs have done, but the stock UI hasn't changed at all, really, since 1.5...
It's not the simplicity of iOS, per say; rather, the ease of use is what I think draws the crowds. I'm an iPhone to Android convert, and have rid myself of most of my Apple products (bad experience with my MacBook left a horrible taste in my mouth), so I guess you could consider me an Android fanboy.
And why would a T-Mobile exec be promoting a competitor's biggest seller (aka AT&T and the iPhone). Kinda off-base there, if you ask me.

I feel you on the alleged ease of use of the iphone but personally I found the Miui homescreen harder to use. If I wanted to open an app, I had to mentally remember which homescreen I placed it on. There was also no other way to sort the homescreen. And when I wanted to move an app to a specific place, other apps shifted places but in sometimes undesirable places. I got frustrated. Thats why I think that the app drawer is a forward evolution of the os. Thats like me places a million shortcuts on my desktop computer instead of going to the start menu or searching for the program in the start menu searchbar. Just my 2cents. Iphone os just not that impressive to me.
I actually have used all the launchers out there and launcherpro is a good launcher to have over certain roms. I myself been on LP plus since CM6 and loved the ability of customizing almost every faucet of the ROM. But since MIUI, I have tried to use LP plus and I have to admit I cannot use any of the launchers to run on top of MIUI. IMO kinda takes away from MIUI.
And because of my opinion, all the apps of course, are on the screens. What did I do? I just used created two folders. One "app" and one "tools" folder and separated them that way. So far so good, unless someone can point me in the direction of a launcher that can organize it in a 'better' way, please let me know. Thanks!

Yes folders are nice. I just didn't like the look of them. I'm happy that cm is porting over the power widget notification bar! That was my fav part of Miui rom

If you want to skip music without unlock the phone, there are many solutions, search in the marker: "Shake2PlayNext".

Have you tried WidgetLocker Lockscreen? =P maybe you'll go back to MIUI again if you try it.
I have organized lots of apps in folders so I don't miss the app drawer at all :]
Music Player Pro (app) has lock screen controls.
Best music player out there imo.

I agree with you on that, MIUI is a very fast and dependable rom, I just don't like my homescreen cluttered, I run a lot of widgets and I don't lag. Nexus can handle it. I have over 200 apps installed and with the standard launcher I couldn't find anything. I have to admit the icons give the phone a uniformed look, but I don't want them on my home screen. I have the App Inventor from Google, and I was trying to come up with a idea for a app, so Ima see what I can do for you. I'm not a dev or anything I'm still going through the tutorials, but we'll see.
Well, I don't know about the rest of you but I enjoy the functionality of MySense in certain respects. My dislikes are not enough to get me to jump to an alternative launcher but they are enough to make me want changes.
In my eyes.... two things will make Espresso aesthetically pleasing and more functional. The first being redirecting/replacing the My Faves with Browser or messenger. And the second... changing the drawer icon to the FROYO blocks icon.
Now, I don't have a full grasp on what would be involved in doing so, but common sense or my lack of understanding perhaps tell me those 2 icons and the 1 remapping can't be too involved. To anyone out there ready and willing to take this on... I will volunteer to be the guinea pig for testing. Me and Nandroid are best friends.

Lol, not forgotten... that is still on my list in the quest of a perfect MT4G. I am going to make that one my personal project. I figured it is in my best interest to enlist some "qualified" help for the Espresso Project.
lol the things you mentioned above are my exact problems with the stock launcher as well everything else i like as of lately ive jus been using a combination of iced glacier and ADW to get sumthing almost similar to wat you discribed but in all i would love to see an actual rom that benifits both i too will be a tester for anyone who decides to take on this project and good luck

i agree ADW doesnt have any real widgets so it does put u at a loss. if sumone could successfully merge the two launchers and have the benifits of both we would have a fricken great rom for this phone. i tried to flash the apks from the glacier rom onto the ADW launcher but it freezes the homescreen i cant get the widgets to successfully adapt to the ADW protocols which puts me back to sqaure one lol

All of this together makes me very pleased with this phone. I have test out sooooo many different apps for these functions and various roms on other phones.. just my taste and opinion.. but give them a try if you havent.

All the time people are talking about rooting their devices, is it the same thing when you jailbreak an iPhone? And when you do it, what does it to your device?

Rooting is nothing more than giving yourself full control over your tablet. When you're NOT rootet, certain aspects of controlling the tab is "locked", so to speak. And that goes for the apps, you install to. Certain files can not be changed, over-written, deleted or even just "watched", if you're not rooted. It's kinda like giving admin-rights on a PC..
Honeycomb is nothing more than the name of the Android-version for tablets, and Touchwiz is the interface and framework Samsung uses for all its Android-product - a way to differ from the other android-products. This tab was first sold without Touchwiz in some parts of the world (running barebone Honeycomb) and then got a touchwiz-update later on. Many of Samsungs own apps will not work on even Samsung-devices, if they do not have TW installed, as they're based on TW-framework.
Pushing something to a given directory basically means copying/moving it to that directory. However, as these directories are mostly "locked" folders, you will need to be have rooted your tab to do this. The "pushing"-term comes from using ADB, where you use a command that says to push the given file to the given directory. Most times off, though, you can do this with a simple file manager (with root-rights ) on your tab.
The only way I know to get new icons is to either
a) Use another Launcher or
b) flash a custom rom with other icons.
However, I'm sure there are other way to do this, that I'm not aware of myself

Ok, that I get. Also what I thought, so almost the same thing jailbreaking and iPhone, but people with the galaxy have many more options afterwards.

If I'm not tottaly wrong we are using Android 3.2 / 3.1 and that is what we call Honeycomb? Simply the name of the Android version. And as I thought, Touchwiz is the interface. I read somewhere it was sold without Touchwiz, but what difference does Touchwiz make? As I wrote, I bought in the US but I have no idea whether I had touchwiz or not. There came some new things after the update, "Indstillinger (Its on danish, dont know the word in english, but maybe "options"?) was completely change from black to white.

What do you mean by "launchers" ? And yep, to get different wallpapers I downloaded and used multipicture live Wallpaper, but dont know if I like it that much, it seems to cause lag.

A Launcher is basically the the desktop of your tablet/phone. It is what displays the shortcuts, application list, widgets etc. that you are using. It is used to 'launch' all other applications on your device. So if you don't like the default launcher on your phone or Tablet, you can use one from the marketplace. there are lots of different options but so far I only know for sure that ADW EX supports honeycomb (Android 3.x)
If you have ADW EX, you can download ADW Themes from the market, and those will change up the appearance of your device, including icons.

This is NOT a "WHAT IS BEST ROM" thread, as has been posted earlier on. I'm simply asking what ROMs I could look into as there are SO many to choose from.
Currently, I'm running Stock 4.1.1 using the JB Domination theme mod and Siyah Kernel. I love Siyah and wish to keep that, but I'd like to have a ROM that gives me more freedom. I have tried CM10 before, and it was missing way too much of the good stuff for me to want to continue using it. I find TouchWiz pretty ugly, hence why I switched to JB Domination and that does solve some of the problem. The thing is, I also hate the stock android launcher due to its lack of folder support in the app menu and hate how it's just a direct list of apps.
I find the stock TouchWiz ROM perfectly functional, but I don't particularly enjoy it per say. I dabbled with ParanoidAndroid and loved the idea but was still irritated with the lack of features that CM10 at its base provides me with. I found that apps that were alternative to those that were baked into the Stock Samsung ROMs just weren't as good.
I use the flashlight and mono audio widgets a lot, I want folders in my application menu and I want any launcher I use to look professional and to go with the theme. I'd prefer the ROM to look just like stock android. The standard launcher with the option of folders would also be useful... I also enjoy customisation as far as colouring of themes goes, but this is something that Android seems to lack, strangely, that Bada (Shocking OS) could actually do very well.
Wanamlite is my most likely next choice as it improves upon stock, but still relies on TouchWiz.
So...
- Like Stock Android theming (Not Stock Touchwiz)
- Launcher that is aethstetically pleasing (Not misended, like GOLauncher) that supports folders in the app menu
- Good selection of widgets (Or alternatives I could download that don't look poorly made)
- Task Manager (As in Touchwiz)
- Apps that serve all the purposes that Samsung's stock ones do (A decent music player, Camera, Contacts, Messaging, Memo etc.)
- Healthy bunch of Theme customisation options (Kind of like Paranoid Android)
What would be your suggestions based on what I've said? If there is no ROM that meets even some of those requirements, what would you recommend I do? Can I integrate some of Samsung's software into something like CM10?

Check out Omega, it has a ton of themes for it now to change the look of the phone completely. Getting rid of that ugly Touchwiz interface that you described.
As for launcher I'm using Apex Launcher Pro. I've been through so many launchers in the past (ADW, Launcher Pro, Go Launcher, Nova) and have never left Apex since installing it. It has a ton of customization and lots of themes too to give you a different look altogether.
Another thing you could do like myself is dual boot CM10 and Samsung Stock and then you have the choice of what rom you want to boot into. The down side is that data within apps don't share between roms so you wont see the same texts in each rom (unless you backup/restore with Titanium but that's annoying.
Or check out MIUI if you like the iPhone interface, I've never been a fan personally but you may like it Best thing to advise you is flash the roms you think you'd like, flashing hundreds of time wont hurt your phone and as long as you have backups you wont lose any data just restore after flashing and you're good to go! :thumbup:

Don't worry about advising me about flashes, I've flashed my S3 many times already xD The actual reason I want to try a different ROM now is because I managed to get a bunch of malware on the phone and need my monthly wipe lol. I thought it was an apt time to try something new.
What kernel do you use for dual booting? I'm a little reluctant to move away from Siyah as it's so great.
I think I will give Omega a go, once I get back from my outing today. I've backed up, just need to sort out what's on my SD card now.

Hi,
I finally made the switch to android after years of iOS and WP.
WP was really a failure in my opinion, and since android doesn't seem to lag that much anymore since 4.0, I thought I'd give android a shot.
I've been playing around and searching for tips and tricks etc, I'm trying to customize my UI to my liking especially, but I can't get anywhere close to those awesome UI screenshots I see people posting of their phones across forums. I'm currently using Go Launcher EX but I'm looking for cooler techy/nerdy widgets, live backgrounds, more animations (especially TV animation when locking the phone).
Can you give a new android user any tips and hints (anything from apps to general usage)?
Any essential apps (like CCleaner for android or something) that I should get, or any procedures such as cleaning the cache regularly I should be aware of?

Wow, that should get me started at least, thanks.
Do you have more launcher suggestions? I don't mind paying for it, but I'm looking for something that has a decent amount of themes to choose from and lots of customizability plus it should be stable and not lag.
