[Q] XDA "Search" Dropdown Button....Gone/removed? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I am currently logged in to XDA and have tried all of the different forum view options but I still don't see the "search" button anymore? Where did it go? Tried on multiple broswers too. Does anyone know how long ago it was removed? How do we search the forums now? I checked the Advanced search button on the top and got "Search is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience." Not sure if that applys to all search functions.

just noticed it missing myself

Ya, i've talked to a few people and I guess its down.

Yup. Only the universal search is working. Thread search is not there.

No great loss . . .

Um.... actually I think its a huge loss. Hopefully they get that back up and running again.

I came to the Q&A thread to ask this very thing.
Yeah, it is hugely important. How can people get flamed for not doing a search before asking a dumb question?

It was completely useless. Most successful searches are from Google.

Ditto, came here wondering why I couldn't find it. There's several huge treads I follow & I frequently find myself searching for some key piece of info I read previously (not to mention flaming the morons who are too lazy to read & think the rest of us are here to serve them).

Now that's an Irony!!!! Having to use Search, to find out the thread Search tool is gone!!
Google is Great, but very rarely do you find a specific XDA ROM answer on the first few looks or searches.
XDA thread search is a must have, to anyone who follows large threads and cant be glued to watching the computer all day long. It beats reading a 100 pages of posts where people keep asking the same questions, over and over again, instead of easily searching the thread, only to find their answer was 3 posts back!! You have permission to use my torch!! Keep Flaming!!

You can still use Google, like this.
Example search site:xda-developers.com/threadNumber
Works?

Can you unroot???

Does anyone know how to unroot and put the phone back to stock??? My girl is gonna sell her phone... Has the verizon OTA update came out to the phones yet?? Can i just let it update??
maybe you should, read the forums.....
I would give you a link to the post on page 2 of this forum but those abilities are blocked for me right now.
Pretty funny how a 14 and 5 poster is making fun of a 96 poster. It is a shame we can't restrict the internet from some people.
So in short. Answer is yes, you can de-root (assuming that is a word) the phone back to stock there is a thread that has a guide for you to do so. Also you should be able to find it yourself. Make it a learning experience.

Doesn't look like he is being made fun of, and what does the number of posts have to do with it. People need to A) use search, B) post incorrect threads/forums.

I wish u gave me a useful answer other than the usual flaming....i didnt see any thread other than mikes and it only got one reply maybe something new came of it..
HTC tool unlocks the phone, however does not provide S-off for us. From my understanding there are developer versions of the Amaze running around and the only person I have seen with one is Xboarder. Not really that big of a deal I guess because Xboarder has a kernel flashing tool you can find in the development section.
Im aware of X's kernel flashing tool but S-off will make all our lives a lil easier...

Seriously? You didn't see the thread that said
Everything S-OFF - Think tank, General information, Q&A
So I am guessing you didn't see the part where it says:
There is no way to get S-OFF on a normal S-ON phone now.
You don't actually need to search. It's a sticky at the top of the Development section.
That includes the HTC Supertool.
It took me literally ten seconds to find the post you were referring to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413787
And the post #2 looks very familiar. Guess what? Nothing has changed or else we wouldn't have the other posts asking for s-off. Would we? I'm not trying to be harsh but this is why people get flamed. I'm not flaming you but instead I'm educating you. If I already posted an answer in that thread... did you really feel that need to start another exact same thread? And did you honestly expect a different answer??? Think about how frustrating that is for me that has been spending hundreds of hours trying to get us s-off. Just take it into consideration next time.
However if you had searched for the term "Amaze s-off" you would have been presented with the following:
[Q] HTC.com dev unlock vs. S-Off in Amaze
[TOOL] Easy Perm Root One Click for 1.36 or earlier devices only (granted that it's not very helpful)
[Q] How to S=off on U.S version T-mobile
Everything S-OFF - Think tank, General information, Q&A
Any progress on S-off?
But you just stated "i didnt see any thread other than mikes"
How is that even possible??? What did you search for to NOT get any of the posts above??? I'm puzzled as to how you couldn't find them.

It's never going to be that easy because there will be another one exactly like this next week. It has to be a couple pages long to look serious enough for some one to read the first post.

Binary I respect your insight and your efforts here in this forum. There have been numerous posts recently speaking to the hostility and lack of basic decency here in the Amaze forum. I never experienced anything like this in the Hero forum. All I'm saying is that if people simply answer a question rather than "flame the noob" then this forum would be a whole lot better for it. It also would result in more useful hits coming up for people actually using the search button since the answers would be more plentiful. Flaming and rickrolling helps nobody.

Look at it this way: If everyone, noobs and non-noobs alike read from the top down, 95% of all question would be answered within the sticky before a new thread is ever created.
I agree that flamimg is counter productive, but the frustrations of the mod is well warranted. He's the one who has to clean up the mess.....

This question get's asked every couple days at least. The answer is yes, it's on the dev's radar. However to enable it on the nook color they needed to use a little bit of info that was on the stock nook color source. (this info is unique to each device) As of yet nobody has managed to find it in the nook tablet sourcecode.
We like to see the search button used here rather then wade through endless posts of the same questions over and over again, so please, next time use the search button. Give it a try on this topic, and search in this forum for "bluetooth," then read what pops up.

I'll do better with that in the future, I thought that the systems auto search when you post a new thread would be sufficient. Lesson learned
Searching is great. But a FAQ section on NT wiki or on forums would also go a long way to reducing the oft repeated inquiries.

Yes, but i don't mean a yes/no checklist- rather a fuller discussion of the efforts and potential prospects -- which would address the repeated inquiries.

A Wiki is what the contributors make it. If you would like the Wiki to be something else, you have the power to expand it. Ultimately, however, with the wealth of information out there I hesitate to think that a Wiki would be any "cleaner" a solution for presenting such information. Look at how many threads are out there and how diverse the topics are.
A full "discussion" is more what I would think a forum is for.
That said, we have both a Wiki and a forum, and we all have the power to make it as we see fit. If you have a great idea, run with it.

New Idea for Guide

Thinking about a guide like say "links to common problems and tuts",
where there is links to every common problem of the forum in those threads. users can post more. so everything is there and its not very messy or long.
op's would get more views and thanks.
Kindly use the vote too.
is this idea good?
I think the stickies already enough (In my own opinion)
I guess we have so many stickies, should be enough

I think the idea is a good one. A bunch of the recognized contributors are trying to do something along those lines, but based on a FAQ. The idea is for most devices to end up with a FAQ with short answers to the common questions/problems. Since the answers are short, they almost always link to a longer guide/tut/resource.
fma965 put one up for the Xperia Play today, it is here if you want to take a look.
Is there any way to share op title or at least have an option for more than person to edit a post? And watch over the thread etc etc.

I think your idea is not bad but I think I already made a FAQ thread for it You can always PM me or tell me all kinds of your idea to improve it. I'm trying to make it as much helpful as I can and if you put your effort too, i think that guide can be extended to a greater level
Best Regards,
AJ

At the moment no. I think that people have asked for this in General - About xda forum. I seem to remember that it was going to be looked into...but it could be a while.
I don't think you can ever have too many guides as what you may find in one you might not find in another, but as already said it's pretty much covered in the guides/sticky department, and most of the solutions to common problems should be found by following Rule Number 1 anyway.
No offence, but the search tool of xda isn't quite up to the mark.

Dblfstr said:
Agreed, but it IS an alternative. And I might point out that the search function is not the best. Case in point, I received a thunderbolt a few weeks ago, and while I was able to find what I needed to root it quickly, there things I needed to know that were no where to be found. As an RC, I knew better than to "just ask", but after I could not find my answer (although I'm sure it was here somewhere) I had to pull a n00b and ask. Of course, I was treated like a n00b with the typical "read the OP, search first" responses. NOT HELPFUL.

Google works perfectly, which is why its so frustrating when People say they've searched but not found what they're looking for, because most of the time typing a thread title or their question into Google finds it straight away, or is in one of the stickys they clearly haven't read.

You're not really inconveniencing anyone but yourself. You waited almost an hour for an answer. It took me less than 2 minutes to search and type a response. The majority of people on here are helpful, but there are some trolls. I've learned way more by searching and reading then asking. Google search has become my best friend! Some tricks I've learned is to type the model number followed by what I want to search for. An example is type "i717 popup browser" and xda developers was the 4th post. You can limit your search to xda by typing what your searching for followed by "site:xda-developers.com". Even better yet you can open xda, navigate to your device and under themes and apps (since popbrowser is an app) type popup browser in the "search this forum" box. It would of been the first post found! This site is a WEALTH of information! Don't hesitate to post questions like you just did. But save yourself some time by perfecting search techniques!!
Thanks bro
