[Q] Join external SD with internal storage/SD? - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hi!
I have a Samsung device of 8GB with an SD card of additional 32GB.
I'm using many apps that cache data for offline use (mainly Google Play Music), these apps are not smart enough to determine the 32GB of available space and take advantage of it, but instead claim 'no space'.
I thought perhaps there is a workaround for it by merging the external storage with the internal so the apps 'think' there is 48GB.
I don't use several SD cards which means I'm not gonna switch SDs back and forth any time soon.
Do you know a hack for it? Or any solution to make Google Music store its stuff into all available space wherever it is?
I've read this link, which I believe targets my issue, but since I'm not so much into Android development, I didn't understand it, can anyone refer me or translate it into a more detailed guide.
P.S. My device is rooted.

Have you tried this?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buak.Link2SD
Works on many devices but requires root. As you've already got that give it a try

OK I managed to install it.
It only gives an option to move from internal storage to SD card, I wanna use EXTERNAL SD, havent managed to find that option.

I have not seen anyone successfully join the two cards on the galaxy player. However on the player series you can change your internal and external cards around. This means your 32GB card will become your internal sd card and the 8GB card will become the external card. However, this means you cannot remove your 32GB card as you are effectively removing the internal memory which leads to a range of issues. Also depending on the class of your 32GB card you may see a performance increase/decrease when reading from or writing to the system.

there is a free app on the market called "gl to sd" it was build for playing gameloft games from external sd but it can be configured for any other app..al data will store on external sd..I use it for a long time for every bigger game like max payne..with out it i would fill that 5 gb long time ago.It basicly mounts data folder of that app on external insted of internal sd.

I'm guessing no one has been to make the external storage as default yet? I have the Galaxy Player 4.2 was wondering the same thing.

WTF is up with my storage? cant install anything!

I hope somebody can help me with this cause Im not too happy right now. 2 days ago I bought a Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 and Ive signed into my Google Accounts so I can install my apps.
The device has 8GB of memory, Ive installed only 12 games yet the device tells me I do not have enough room to install more ?!?!? WTF ! I have 8GB of storage.
When I go to settings, SD Card and Device Storage it shows I have 5GB of space left.
Then I plugged the device into my computer to see if I can copy over some music, 1.25 GB worth copied to the device with no problem leaving me over 3GB of space so whats the deal? why cant I install a 20mb app but I can copy over a gig of music?

I get a "can't install on USE or SD card" error....
And its getting worse...
I have like 30 meg free... and get an error installing a 4 meg file...

If you meant Settings>Applications>Manage Applications I just did that and the option to clear the cache is greyed out and its already set at zero.

Hi,
I'm still new to the SGP5 (in my case), but if you can, try to get something like App2SD installed. That tells you how much "internal" (not sure what its called on the SGPs) memory is available. At least on another device I have (a Droid), even though you have lots of space available, they only allocated a relatively small amount for "system", which is where apps normally go, so you can run out of that "system" space way before using up all of the internal SD space.
Apps like App2SD/App2SD pro will "move" parts of some apps (not all apps are "moveable") to the external microSD, leaving a much smaller "footprint" in the internal SD.
Jim
This is quite common, what you want to do is clear all the cache and everything else. To do this go to the Sd card or root of device and deleting the tmp folder and going into android and deleting other cache related to the device. Thats how mine got fixed.
hey thanks for the info. I was beginning to think I had a defective device. I wound up installing my apps a little bit at a time, took me a couple of hours. for some I actually had to side load them.
I will definitely get App2SD and see how that works.
This device is a Xmas gift for my 8yr old because he likes my Galaxy S II more than the iPhone 4 I gave him. he would not have been able to put all the games on it so I figured Id open it up and at least put all the games on it.
thanks again for your help.

Hi,
Mind you, not all apps will be moveable. I'm not sure of the technical details, but I think they have to be written a certain way to be moveable. In any event, a nice side benefit of apps like App2SD/App2SD Pro is that they will show you the space available for apps, so you get an idea about how much "headroom" you have.
Good luck,
Jim

[Q] Application storage?

Really wanting to pick up one of these Notes but, as I learned with my HTC Desire, I ran out of space for my applications rather quickly (until I rooted it), so I'm wondering if the Note suffers from the same issue of not enough space on the stock RoM? I really don't feel like rooting it but if that's the solution then so be it but I'm a bit of an app whore and I need space for them all.
Thanks all.
Any input appreciated.... Probably still getting one but I just wondered if app space has been an issue for anyone?
You have 11gb after all the system files are on there. That should be plenty, and if it isn't you can always save apps to sd.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
On my old desire only 512 MB or so was dedicated to app storage so it got consumed quickly, just wasn't sure if the Note had a similar spec for its internal memory.
I made the mistake of going back to BlackBerry and I've been out of the android loop for a bit but I'm coming back!

That is the internal sdcard for user storage...not apps
The data partition (where user apps are installed) is a bit over 2gb.
Way less than 11 but still should be plenty

Dude, I just bought the note about a 10 days ago, I'm not sure but it seems like i have a problem with the storage. My problem is that, I downloaded many games and all the data of those games that i downloaded stored automatically to the internal memory of the phone not to my SD card. Now my 32 GB SD is empty and my phone memory is full. I don't know what to do, if I ever move any of the data to my SD card then i can't play that game it will asked to download the data again. My phone is not rooted. I was wondering if rooted, does it going to help.

Apps can only be saved to the ~16 GB on the phone/internal sd card. The external is pretty much for music/videos/pictures. You can root, install titanium backup and backup apps to external SD. Then if you run out of space, uninstall less used items and you can restore from where you left it vs re downloading and starting over. Not perfect, but it's this way on a few phones (Droid bionic comes to mind)

User Memory Availability

Hello.
I know this is probably a stupid question and I haven't even bothered to check if this has been asked before
So here it goes.
My phone, on gsmarena, says that it has 1GB internal memory (320 user available)... I was just wondering what actually uses the remaining memory? And is there a way to check on how much I have already consumed for the non-user available memory?

System, data and cache partitions. Install Terminal Emulator and type "df" (I'm not sure if it's only shipped with busybox, if so install busybox from Play Store too). It will print all mounted partitions, their size and used size.
Thanks!
Thanks for the reply!!
It just bugs me that I only have 320MB available memory for applications...
Also, another memory related question...
When I am on the Apps Settings, first it shows that I only have 52MB left, then when the sizes of the apps finish loading, it turns to 131MB left...
Can somebody shed some light into this?
Again, thanks for the answer...

Maybe it's a bug. Second value is true, I think.
I am no technical person but i really think you should root your phone and use Link2SD to save the space, my phone was a worthless piece of crap till i got around to using Link2SD and now i have tons of apps on it and the internal memory has more than 150mb free which makes it run fatser.
this app will also tell you the information you need about how much space left exactly.
I tried rooting my phone but i was greatly unsuccessful... my phone was stuck on an endless bootloop... so i reflashed... it would be great if i can flash this...
Earlier, i have 50mb free, but when i installed icq, it says that i don't have enough space...

you probably know that you can send apps to sd using the regular way " from app info", but some apps can't be sent like chrome for example.
if you already know that and the icq app isn't movable then you should consider giving it up, and maybe using a multi im client like imo beta, it supports icq i think
and just steer clear from those apps that can't be moved using app2sd, you can find it here if tyou don't already know about it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd
good luck
Yeah... I know about that one... it's just that icq is only a 3mb app, and I have 59mb free memory... so why would it suddenly say that I'm out of memory...
That's just weird... anyway, I have given up about the memory issue on my phone... unless i somehow find a way how to root this, I'm good as stuck...
Sent from my MK16i using Tapatalk 2
well i use link2sd for that too. i don't know if it will work with you because this function is not root related but you should give it a try
download the app and launch it. ideally you'll get a list of apps on your device. there is a button at the top to sort these apps and if you choose to sort by size you'll see which applications are taking more space and that's how you know what's eating your space.
probably other app managers do that as well cause all you need to do is sorting which is no big deal.
i am no expert when it comes to rooting but it took me a long time to do it in my device because pieces of information were scattered everywhere. so i am sure if you look harder and ask experienced members here you'll eventually work it out
best of luck.

you're on ICS, right?
when I updated my mini pro to ICS, several apps just force closed when I was trying to run them. so I uninstalled them and tried to download them from Play Store again, and I was getting the same "low free space" message. I'd say those apps are just incompatible with ICS and you have to look for some alternatives.
Thanks again for the replies ... really appreciate it... i have another question that's sort of memory related... i installed hatchi, but niw it seems that i can't uninstall the updater...

The pics are not actually on your phone. Do the math. Total memory - Applications = about Available. Think about it. If you only have 10.84GB total how can you have 15.58GB Misc files? It is how the phone is set up to work. If you need space then lose some apps. You can't possibly need that many applications.

I have 16GB on board and a 32GB micro SD card. Ive moved all of my apps over 25mb to the SD card. there's no way the few apps I have is taking up that much space. Im figuring that apps that Ive uninstalled (namely Gameloft apps) have left a lot of junk behind.
I once rooted an S2 and found 10gb of data left behind from Gameloft apps that I uninstalled.
I dont want to root my note though because I wasn't too happy with the rooted S2 that I had.
You don't understand. You have 16GB of internal memory. That includes your ROM, 1.97GB of internal storage, and 10.84GB of USB storage. Apps are installed to the internal storage. If you move apps to the sd card you are in fact not moving them to an external sd card but the internal sd card/usb storage.
Yes it is possible you have gameloft or EA remnants left behind.

Do a search on XDA for "Directory Bind". It will help you move folders of game data like gameloft games to the external sd card.

Dude, where's my memory?

Anyone have any idea where all my internal memory is going.
I realized that I only had 2.85gb of memory on my internal sd
I deleted some crazy but I truly have no idea where it's getting these numbers.
It shows I have 7.83gb in miscellaneous files. When I opened it and added the files size up, it only comes to 2.07gb.
Not only that. I completely cleared my download folder and it still shows 20mb usage.
Damn I miss my 32gb s3

I had that problem before on this phone but I just did a full wipe and started over and it was fine but I could not tell ya what caused it cause I haven't been really even using too many apps and games cause I have been too busy flashin different roms and playin around with the phone.. I have been being a huge slacker... If it's not too hard for ya I would just backup everything with TB and start over and then restore with NO app data included. I do it all the time but I have been crackflashin for years so I got it down to a science now. lol It is a pain though so if you can figure it out it would be better, of course.
** And YES, I do miss my 32gb S3 sometimes**
Okay. Downloaded SD maid.
Pretty much tells me exactly what I've seen on my storage tab.
I did clean some corpses (lol) but nothing out of the ordinary.
Don't mind the Six Feet deep episodes, those are on my SD card.
Btw, as far as roms go. I've only flashed beans v2 and I always fully wipe and never restore with data, ever.
I also have never had a problem with a rom, and I credit that towards always wiping clean. So what it takes a few more minutes to set up. At least you know it's a fresh install right?
So it looks like your 4GB of TWRP backups were the culprit?
Edit: Oops - I guess only 1.44 GB of the TWRP backups were on the internal SD.

Okay. Downloaded SD maid.
Pretty much tells me exactly what I've seen on my storage tab.
I did clean some corpses (lol) but nothing out of the ordinary.
Don't mind the Six Feet deep episodes, those are on my SD card.

YUP! I am just sayin that something is not right and if you do it again and the problem is gone then "problem solved" ... But I didn't know if that was something you wanted to try? I went from the International Note 2 to the T-mobile Note 2 and now am on the Verizon Note 2 and I have seen this issue but I just don't have an answer for ya...?
EDIT: You do have some TWRP backups in your system files (in your internal storage) The one at the top anyways...
I'm confused about the Twrp backups. I only have 1 in there and it's the stock rooted backup.
This is my first time using Twrp. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I have been using clockwork for the past 2 years. Flashed hundreds of roms from my OG DX, DX2, Bionic, Gnex, Sgs3 and now Note 2. Never had this issue on CWMR
Hmmm here's how I interpret it...
7.83 GB of Miscellaneous files
5.77 GB of which are dedicated to System Memory.
2.06 GB remain
1.62 GB of that being TWRP
0.44 GB dedicated to everything else listed.
I wonder what is in Note II's Android OS that requires 5.77 GB of memory.
TouchWiz is a big *****

Just want you to know that you're not alone. Stock, I had those 5gb and now on Beans 3 it's still there. I've wiped more times than after eating dirty mexican food and nothing seems to work. I'll be creeping this thread hoping someone finds an answer.
I also have 5.77GB of Miscellaneous Items. Granted reading that post earlier 5.77GB dedicated to System Memory. So yeah. I guess mines alright.

That is because it doesn't delete the previous cache, AFAIK.
