Software update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just received a notification to update software. I downloaded the update & phone booted into recovery but failed to install update.
Could that be because I have rooted the device ? what is the solution for this ?

Because of the root you can't update normally. I'm not sure if you can take the update what your phone downloaded and flash it yourself.

An option is to choose a custom ROM and follow its updates as they will most likely include important updates in their future versions.

You can only update with kies as your rooted, root will removed after update so you will have to re install.

Do I need to install stock rom of just stop after the changes done by Triangle Away ? I am running the stock rom that shipped with the device but I rooted it......all I want now is to unroot to be able to install genuine software updates

The only thing stopping you installing these updates is the custom recovery, not root itself. You could use mobile ODIN to flash a stock recovery from a stock rom, and then you can get official updates.
Or like many on here, just wait for word on a new update, download it from Sam Mobile and use ODIN (or mobile ODIN) to flash

I was rooted with Chainfire. All I wanted was OTA updates.
Very simply update your phone with the latest chainfire root - 6.4 i believe (just install over the existing chainfire if this is how you're rooted). Install the OTA's. Reflash again with 6.4 and you'll have your up to date OTA's and rooted. All took 10 minutes

I am rooted with CF v6.1 & whenever phone reboots to recovery to install updates it fails. Why would it work with v6.4 ?!
is there a way I can download the updates only on the PC & flash them with oden ? on sammobile, they have the updates integrated in a ROM.

CWM cancels firmware update

I startet the update one min ago, rebooted and cwm then canceld it saying that the signature was incorrect so it abortet the update..
what to do now ?
What update by what method what file .
Strange to update via CWM .
jje
Did u flash the cwm and what file are u trying to flash(zip, tar, rom or kernel)
I did not do anything via cwm...
I went down to my phone and checked if theres and update avaliable,
it found one and downloaded it and rebooted in order to install it and after the phone was off it opened the packet and startet installing and all of a sudden i landed in cwm saying the packets signature was invalid...
thats what happened
OTA does not work with CWM. There are work-arounds but it's recommended to stay with Kies or Odin to flash new versions.

lol thats a minus for cwm imo... meh... does anybody have a link to a thread providing the latest release ?
whisch one is it btw ? 4.1 jelly bean ?
Here are most of the available firmwares:
http://www.samfirmware.com/
Jellybean isn't out for a couple of months, so it's a bugfix/enhancement release of ICS.

CWM is not designed for Samsung but for Android phones in general. So it cannot support all of the quirks and specialitys of all devices.
Latest CWM and root from dev section is supposed to allow updates OTA.but of course you need to reroot .
Simpler to join XDA and flash stock roms rather than try to mix and match .

so i think i will just wait then till the entire rom gets released.. :>
Yeah, wait for full(rom) update. lfb is latest firmware.lg1 is the the same rom just different modem

Enquiry about ROOT for Galaxy SIII

Dears,
I would like to ask how to root my Samsung SIII with stock rom. Just wish to that the mobile device is smoother, battery efficient and power saving. I read some thread and slightly understand the step, first download ODIN and install it into pc. Second, put CF-ROOT into the TAR column. Meanwhile, I also found FRANCO for kernel. So, what should I do??
The other things will be, the same stuff above can be use in Samsung galaxy SII as well?
Thanks and pending the response.

Yeah pal use cf root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Read instructions properly in 2nd post it very simple method

Install odin
Download cwm recovery for your phone model
Flash it with pda button in odin
Then press volume up and power button to go recovery mode
Then install superSU with install zip from sdcard option
Done.
You can set root privilages in supersu program
*search more carefully and do it with your responsibility
*personally i dont prefer root because official updates wont install anymore. I once rooted then flashed to stock
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
U can go back to complete stock anyway by flsshing your official firmware from sammobile.com. u will need triangle away also as your system status will still say MODIFIED.

Not sure i understand 100% but flashing cfroot will alter your binary counter, hence change device status to modified yes.

Using CF root you will still be able to get official updates through Kies no problem, u just need to run cf root again after an official update. OTA updates I dont use anyway but just to be safe dont try and install OTA updates as the usually seem to fail. If the phone notifies u of a ota update just hook up kies and get it.
If you plan to install other root kernels I cant advice as I only use cf root.
CF-Root is a stock-kernel with Root enabled, so if you want to increase "smoothness" and battery saving, then you're on the wrong kernel since it behaves exactly like stock.
I can recommend Siyah kernel. You don't even need to use CF-Root to root your device before, since it already comes with a Odin-flashable version and auto-installs root.

OTA means over the air..which again means you will get a notification saying you have a software update ...when you click on it will download the update file and update your phone without connecting to PC..other way is you connect to PC open Kies..download the update in Kies and update your phone..

I think you should read more before you ruin your phone. I would start reading the cf root thread. I would root with cf first then make a nandroid backup in recovery. Then from there you can flash whatever you like i.e kernels, ROMS.

As long as the ROM & CSC are correct you can update a rooted phone through Kies, as far as I am not wrong, whereas you will loose root and have to re-root. What is not working is the OTA update if you are rooted.
Hence the easiest solution is to download the ROM via sammobile or XDA and flash it via Odin or better Mobile Odin (to keep root).

thanks guys for immediate response.I think i will just use odin to maintained rooted. my only problem is i am not sure what guide to use and which is safer? although i research myself through i am just confused so many guides in using odin. my phone is GT - I9300 android version 4.1.1 with a baseband ver: i9300XXDLIB. i just want to update this to 4.1.2 if possible via odin to maintain rooted. If you guys can help me out which guide to follow that will maintain rooted and safe that will be much appreciated!

As I mentioned, Mobile Odin is the easiest way as you just select the rom and it flashes incl. root injection. For Odin, simply download the rom you would like to flash (e.g. stock rom from sammobile or prerooted from XDA's general section), and follow the usual steps (e.g. there are easy videos to follow on YouTube & there are many guides in the general section). If you chose to flash a rom that is not yet rooted you will need to flash CF-Auto-Root of CF-Root again.

got it! another question if you don't mind, can i use stock rom using odin without unrooting my device? some people say that if you try to flash your device with official stock rom might unroot phone? is this true or just using odin will prevent your phone from unrooting? no matter what rom you would use. thanks in advance!

there are two ways:
(1) Odin (desktop version): if you flash a stock rom (normal version, not rooted), it will be not rooted, hence you have to root again
(2) Mobile Odin (Adroid Play Store): if you flash a stock rom (normal version, not rooted), you have an option to inject root and directly root it in the process of flashing the rom

I see, the mobile odin i guess is suited for me. since i dont want to unroot my device i just want to update it.
you can always reroot it afterwards. Or better yet, flash a prerooted ROM

OTA update usually fails to install .
Kies may update if it sees correct codes but as you are modify phone it may not .
You would be beter reading the faqs and guides first .

no, you'll have to decrease the binary counter with Triangle Away (requires root), then you can flash a stock ROM with Odin.
please, before you do anything stupid, read a TUTORIAL, because everything i'm saing is extremely superficial!
Why would you root then throw away all the benefits of being rooted by installing official updates?

[Q] UPDATE

Hallo.... Guys, new android updates are coming. After root its not possible to get OTA update. What is the plan ? i mean, this thread its going to be about the ways how to update our beloved ZOOM to the newest firmware.
QUESTIONS ARE:
It is someone going to work on root for 4.3 - 4.4 ?
It is better to "stay" on stock firmware ?
How its possible (where to download) to flash the stock ? (unrooted)
