LTE SIM card slot question - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

So I know nothing about the sim card slot and I have a few questions maybe someone can help me understand.
1. Is the slot going to be used by the phone on a day to day basis? meaning does it have to have a sim card in there to use voice or data or both?
2. If the sim card is there for data only, can i use voice from verizon and data from someone else, by lets say inserting a sim card from another company?
2. If I go to china or to Canada (i travel there often for business I live in the US) can I insert and sim card from a gsm carrier and the phone will work? Does it have to be a cdma carrier?
By the way I just got the sprint GS3 for my wife and it has no slot, so im pretty sure I cant use it anywhere but the US without paying crazy overage charges.

You need the Verizon LTE sim card in at all times for data and voice.

thanks for cluttering the developer section

I don't think the Verizon phone was listed as a world phone. Currently no GSM support.
Also, this was the wrong section for this.

From a hidden menu, I have no idea if it works or not:

Verizon has stated that global capability will be enabled in a future software upgrade. But you know Verizon, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

Have a question while we're on the subject:
What happens if you take your active Verizon LTE sim card and stick it in another compatible Verizon phone? Does it just work, or do you need to activate in any way?

If the sim card fits ie. gnex to siii then it will work.

My GNex still has a sim card in it, I asked for a new sim card with my GS3. Do I just power off the GS3 and do the online Activate My Phone/Switch Phones to use my GNex, say for going to the beach?

No, deactivated SIM cards can never be reactivated. if you want to use your Nexus, you can just physically swap in your active SIM.

Ok so I have an S3 on Verizon with unlimited data on my line. My wife now has my old Thunderbolt and her line is eligible for discount upgrade in January 2013 with the $30 2gb plan. If I upgrade her phone to a Nexus 2 or whatever is out, activate it with her new sim card, can I then just swap sims so I get the new phone and keep unlimited on my line?
This way I still get discounted upgrades and she gets my old phone.

Yes. I just gave my girlfriend my Nexus for use on her unlimited line. You just have to go into the store and get a SIM for it.

Does this phone come with a SIM card when buying new from AT&T?

Just bought this phone new from AT&T (no commitment pricing), and it should be here within the next few days. I'm wondering if the phone out of the box includes a compatible SIM card? I'm coming from an iPhone 4, so I can't just stick my micro SIM card in if it doesn't. Even if I get a micro SIM to SIM adapter, would I be able to access the appropriate HSPA+ network with that? Much thanks if you can point me in the right direction.
Once you get the phone go to att and ask to get a new one for the phone they won't charge you anything

Yes, AT&T always sends out a new SIM card with new phones. You can also ask for one at local AT&T store for free.

Oh, good to hear. I wonder why the sell one then (whoops, can't post links to AT&T's site yet) or why others have to buy adapters?
I came from iphone also, and was bummed to learn micro sim doesn't work in the s2. The phone will ship with a new regular sized sim inside. so if you dont need to use your iphone 4 anymore, or dont want to, call 611 from your iphone before you do anything with the s2 and it will walk you through getting the new sim activated.
I ordered a micro sim adapter and it works great. Kind of annoying that you can't get the adapter free from ATT. The micro sim works fine on hspa+ also. so if you want to swap back and forth you can, just know that ATT wont help you with this.

Oh, right. People like to switch back and forth between phones, but I thought the data services weren't compatible?
I drop my micro sim into my s2 and I get H+ up top and data speeds and call quality are the same... I could be wrong tho...
in my case I need to be able to use the iphone 4 on network for development.
H+ is defaulted because hspa+ uses the same towers as 3g and by assumption, most, if not all, 3g towers have been upgraded.
Call qualities aren't suppose to be any different.

Because sims aren't 'free'. They are given free as a courtesy under certain circumstances--eg new acts/upgs/swapping devices/defective sim..

Are there different sim cards/imei's for different phones?

Got a lot of conflicting info on this.
1.Are different sims given for smart vs dumbphones? 3G vs 4G? Etc
Ie: will a smartphone not access 4g on a GoPhone sim?
2.Can a Rep on the phone identify your phone by the imei?
Thank you for any enlightening!
I may be wrong but I think the gophone sim works differently than a regular sim, there are att sims that say 3g but they work just the same as the new sim cards att is using, as far as the rep being able to tell ur phone make and model by the imei that's a yes for sure, they can detect what phone you have without you giving them that info and slap the $25 2gb data plan on your account.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
To put it simply- if the network system knows that X phone has X IMEI or even model code it shows when it connects (I777 vs say I9100) and its endorsed by them, then they'll know what it is.
Do you want to know this to avoid paying ridiculous data fees? If so, get an international unlocked/unbranded phone that your carrier never had/in their system. I've been milking dumbell data rates on my Nokia E series phones for years now and not because I use the balls out of the data, but to have that unlimited/cheap peace of mind.
When I upgraded from my Captivate to the SGS2, the AT&T clerk said I needed the 4G sim card and installed one.

I received the same treatment. With my last five phones, I've only been able to swap out the SIM cards twice — once because I bought a phone on Craigslist.
Really? I'm still on my, what is it, 4-5 year old 3G sim and no problems whatsoever.

I was on my old 3g Sim card as well but when i got the sgsii it wouldn't connect to the "phone" APN, i had to use the old "wap.cingular" APN. The old 3g Sims aren't provisioned on AT&T's network to access hspa.
Before getting a new Sim card, i would never get over 3Mbps down. Now i average 5 and on good days it'll peak to 7-10.
to answer the question about different Sim cards for smart phones or dumb phones; pretty sure they use the same card because when i went the other day to get a new Sim, the rep just grabbed one from a stack and activated it, there was only one stack. Also it would cost more and bee more confusing for them as company to do that.
And at&t can identify a phone over the network only if that phone is familiar to them. So if you bought an AT&T sgsii off craigslist/ebay/friend and plug in your Sim card, they'll be able to tell.
If you buy a phone that isn't sold/recognized by AT&T, most of the time they can't tell what the device.
A good check is after you put the Sim in your phone, wait a couple hours then log onto your account online and if it shows a picture of the phone your using, they can detect it.

I have this as a gophone. They gave me a normal sim card not the go phone sim card. It has hspa + also.

Well sim doesn't really determine what your plan allows you to do, so sims are dime a dozen. I may consider upgrading my sim if they'll be able to put my current number on a newer sim, else I'm not really concerned too much. (and, for your laughs, I'm still only using Edge to avoid having gutter battery).

this is only partly true. IF you have a att phone they can detect what type of phone you have by your IMEI #. that number is cataloged in their systems however if you have a European phone or a unlocked phone from another carrier then no they cannot tell what phone you have.
as for sims there are 2 different types of sims (go phones I dont know) there is the regular sized sims and the micro sims. Micro's for att are used for iphone 4 and up and I believe they are the only phone for att that uses the micro sim. As for functionality of the sims no the old sims (3G) work with thier HSPA+ just the same.....

Same thing when I upgraded. But my sim was a few years old and pretty scratched up from being put in different phones so I figured even if it would work it was time to be replaced anyway.
When I bought the sgs2 the clerk was surprised I still had my Cingular Sim card and suggested I get the new one. I got to keep my Cingular relic.

The only problem I've run into is my mms stopped working a few days after using the phone and I'm on a gophone account. My inspire works fine. Not sure if they ran an imei sweep and the sgii doesnt play nice with gophone accounts. They still had my imei as an old nokia flip phone. You don't have to have data on a gophone, but if you want internet you'll need to buy a gophone data package.
You mean you need an unlimited $50 type GoPhone account right? No one needs a data account above and beyond that.
I bought a cheap GoPhone $50 plan today...using that sim in my Note AI get tomorrow.

Bell not compatible on Rezound?

I contacted Bell (a cellphone company in Canada) there saying it won't work on there network cause it's HSPA phone but I checked the specs & this is indeed a CDMA phone. There saying if it was a CDMA phone it would not have a sim card slot. I did notice they were calling it the "Vigor" instead of the new name. Can anyone explain if this is right? I don't want to go out buying a card & waisting money if what they said is true.

It is an LTE/CDMA/GSM/WCDMA device. It does have a sim card slot. And it isn't called the Vigor any more. The same way the EVO 4G is no longer called the Supersonic.

This is indeed a CDMA phone. It has a SIM slot because its also a GSM/LTE/WCDMA phone as well and will work on those networks too.
I was able to activate it on a GSM network but I'm not getting any data. Is there a way to fix this?
There is a thread for it in general, should check there.

[Q] Note with ATT prepid go phone sim?

I have an LG ATT android go phone and was wondering if I was to buy the Note if I could use the Gophones sim card in the note. I am not a huge fan of contracts and would prefer not to have one.

Not the AT&T Note, but you can with the international Note.

Yeah, unfortunately for the i717 you have to have one of the 4G/LTE sim cards... my Inspire's sim wouldn't even work in it, had to get a new one again.

Your Inspire SIM is 4G, right? Could you ask them for an LTE SIM for the Inspire and then see if it works with the Note. (I assume it will.) GoPhone doesn't have any LTE SIM option right now, correct? Thanks.
Somewhat different, but I have an H20 prepaid SIM I use in my AT&T Note while travelling. No data is available, but voice calls and SMS work just fine.
A thought
Has anyone tried to create a non lte apn and get data working with a non lte sim. I have an lte sim but had created a non lte apn and was using that since there is no lte in Omaha yet.
Cheers.

First off, welcome to XDA.
Yes. You can use a go phone SIM card with the AT&T Note. But I can't personally recommend it.
Just tell a rep that you need a new SIM card (full sized) and they'll give you one. With a go phone account, you may need to bring your LG phone into the store if your name isn't on the account.
As for getting the phone to work properly. There are a few tricks. One that I haven't personally tried is wiping the EFS folder to give the phone a "generic IMEI".
There are a lot of great tutorials for getting most Androids to work with go phone service on XDA. Just keep in mind your data speeds will not be good. (I believe you will be throttled to 1mb dl)
Of course, if you can! I have it so! and I works great but it must be with a new sim card and prepaid active. You can also change the vpn! I did and it works fine!

[Q] activation help needed

hello all, i will be getting a note 2 in the mail tomorrow. but it an upgrade from my dads line (we are both on the same family plan). currently i have the gs3. when it gets here should i activate it using the supplied sim (his) or just use mine right away? ultimately i want to have the note on my number and have my dad get my s3 under his number. im pretty sure that all it takes is to just swap the sim cards but im not sure how to go about activating it. any help is greatly appreciated.

I didn't have another sim card, but I'm pretty sure you activate his line first, then switch out the sims. I activated mine on my other line, and the sim card was attached to that line.
OK. Thank you. That will work then right. Just swaping sims to regain each others current phone number?

I never had a 4g phone before, so they sent me a 4g sim. When i activated the sim, it was on the other line so the sim was "attached" to that number. You can go online and switch it, but there has to be a 24hr wait period (give or take.) So I didn't want to wait a day to use my phone, so i went to a third party VZW reseller and got a new 4g sim and activated it there onto my line. The phone, I believe, initially has to be activated on the upgraded line first. Many people have said they have gotten the phones and put in their sim right away and that has worked as well.
