Any real benefits of overclocking? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well i have rooted my phone and wanted to overclock my S2.. Now i need to install a custom kernel for that , so was thinking of going with siyah..
However i just wanted to know whether is it really worth overclocking? I mean i will go back to stock settings for day to day usage.. but like for playing games and stuff..i would like to overclock my cpu..
There are few 3d games mainly open world ones like gangstar rio city, amazing spiderman which lag a bit even on S2..
So just wanted to know whether overcloking to1.4 or 1.5 will show any improvements or not? Also how does it affect the overall performance of the device i.e. opening apps, swiping through home screens, home screen lag etc.
Answers would be greatly appreciated
thanks

well OC does improve performance of the phone while doing the benchmark test's,but the same is not recommended for longer use since it creates lots of isssue's like Random freezing, rebooting, overheating etc which is not good for ur phone.
hence the best thing is to try out some good kernels like Siyah, fluxi etc and see how ur games fare with there default settings and also u can set the Governers in the same(siyah, Fluxi kernel) and try, that way its safe rather than Overclocking

Well, more performance (but for me not that much) at the expense of battery life and a damaged chip set sooner than later in the future

So do u think installing siyah kernel will have a postive impact on the performance of the phone overall as well as games? by the way regarding OC, ofcourse i wont overclock the whole time , only when playing those demanding 3d games..
more replies especially from experienced overclockers would be appreciated, thanks..
I am not installing any custom rom currently as RR and few others have reportedly been not so stable for gaming..the games crash or force close etc..
so gonna stick with stock rom for now..but i do want a performance enhancing kernel

You won't need to overclock at all whilst playing games. The cpu will be more than sufficient and stock speeds. Also the gpu does main of the gaming bits and that will have no problem as it can play tegra games

well thats d prob..there are few games that do lag on d great s2 lol as mentioned in my post... so was wonderkng wheyher overclocking cpu and/or gpu will affect performance or not..
thanks for f replies though

Please help, games are laggy :(

Hey, I have some problems with almost all games, I tryed all, thd games, gameloft games, market games....
I cant play any game smooth, what is wrong, I tested it on all actuell custom roms.
Please help me, the games running blazing fast on my galaxy note, but not on my tab
These would help make it easier on other's to help, Firmware Version and #? What tab version? Custom or Stock Kernel?
But yes I will have to agree, most games that end up scaling are **** laggy, Only game that hasn't lagged on me hard was "Where's My Water?" and "Osmosis HD", if you aren't on 1.4Ghz by Pershoot, most lag so damned hard, BS tegra2
Yoda : I couldn't play initially, lag strong with this one, yes.
Just change the governor in Pershoots Kernel to performance but don't keep it on performance all the time, when your done gaming, change it back to ondemand or something as performance on all the time will kill the tablet faster as it makes the GPU processing 100% making games smooth and lagfree at most.
My tablet was doing that too but then I followed the advice of people in here and installed pershoots kernel and set CPU and set it to 1400 and it got super fast
What governor did you use? Performance?

GAMING PERFORMANCE on CUSTOM ROMS @GAME FREAKS

Hey guys
This question is mainly aimed at gaming freaks who have also switched to custom roms.
Just wanna know how is the gaming performance (generally 3d games) on various roms like Resurrection remix, ics slim ,cm9, miui etc..
I saw in various threads that many 3d games lag more on such roms (at stock cpu/gpu settings)? Is it true? Coz if it is, then this is totally a deal buster for me..i was excited to flash RR but if games are lagging...there wont be any use of improved system performance lol on a custom rom
anyway guys do let me know the gaming problems with any of the popular roms..so i can make up my mind and finally flash a custom rom..
thanks

i am on latest version of ressurection remix and i fell no such problem.i use no tweaking like overclocking etc...{i hate all these things}}
Cm9/aokp I get the best graphics performance. I actually under clock my CPU for a longer battery life... and its just still as good if not better than stock.

Games like Dead trigger, NOVA 3, shadowgun, Modern Combat 3 - lots of framerate issues on ICS custom rom. I never had issues on GB and never stayed on samsung ICS long enough to find out what that was like. Mundane tasks showed that it sucked balls, so I seriously doubt that it would be any different with intensive tasks like gaming.
I'd venture a guess that CM9 kernel is probably better than the majority of ICS kernels. My experience is that it just works alot better in general - other kernels have a lot of bells and wistles but other than some cool novelty feature, really aren't very different from each other. CM9's kernel really stands out for me. I have however heard good things about Fluxi kernel. I made the switch but it was much worse unfortunately others may have a different experience though.
The lag spikes seem to be random aswell, so I have my doubts any overclocking would help. If it happened in sequences with big open fields and lots of enemies on screen I'd understand, but when you are in a small corrider with no-one around, I can't think of why it should do it then. Not to mention it was seemless on stock GB (actually Villian ROM 3.0 and Redpill kernel).
But I've got CM9 running exactly how I want it and its stock CM9 kernel is actually pretty good, the games are good to play on it, but you do get annoying lag spikes somewhat frequently.

Asphalt 7 feels laggy

Hello everybody, just bought this game but it feels a bit laggy for me. Is it normal in this device(i9100)? I'm using the latest siyah kernel with a stock samsung based rom.
I think this game should run smoothly (100%) in my device. Overclocking is not a solution for my problem. It seems to be bad optimization because sometimes it feels completely smooth (60fps) but for example, when waterfalls are on the way the game becomes laggy (20-25 fps). It is still playable but i think it should be completely smooth.
Sorry for my bad english...

try with a different Governer(set the same using Xtweaks on siyah) and see

It is not governer fault, i think.
Tried with performance goberner, which sets cpu full power all the time and... same results!!!
It makes no sense for me! Our device should run this game smooth!! Isn't it?
London race is smoother than Rio. Rio's waterfalls or... race in general is the one which makes the game laggier.
It's gameloft's fault. People on SIII and on One X are also complaining about lags. It's not the device, it's not the ROM, it's not the Kernel. It's the game.

I meant Hawai, not Rio.
So, poor game optimization... uh!
Like the dark knight rises? That game has the crappiest performance I've ever seen. In my device at least...

Another question....
While gaming gpu is more important than cpu in every times?. It means that cpu is not fully using? Or it works like on computers? Some games demand more cpu.. others more gpu...
Is it worth while overclocking cpu?
If you use siyah kernel, you may try Default or Performance profile. Boot in to recovery, choose last line ( Kernel options... i don't remember exactly).
Or try other kernel such as CF root kernel bases on stock kernel, and stock kernel always gives good performance.

Disabling CPU rendering on Gingerbread

Hello everybody ! Basiclly i want to ask if it would be a good idea to try disabling CPU rendering for a GB rom? Im currently on CM10 but really cant use it too much cause some games like Fruit ninja force close and cant even listen to music whatsoever. But the main thing that i dont like about GB roms is that they are very slow compared to CM9 or CM10. Would disabling CPU rendering make a difference? People say it makes a big difference .
It's probably possible, but I don't have the slightest idea on howto do it.

No 2D GPU rendering is available on GB. All GUI is rendered by CPU. So turning that off would leave you a black screen (except in games).

HW acceleration was introduced in Honeycomb. Only the CPU is used for 2D rendering on earlier versions

using ExTweaks?

I've looked around and can't find any info at all,
I play Gangstar Rio City Of Saints on my sgs2 but I experiance a lot of lag issues.
I'm hoping over-clocking/ changing cpu/gpu settings could eradicate this only ExTweaks has no instructions whatsoever and I don't want to make any n00b mistakes.
Can someone tell me how to optimize my phone for high-end gaming please?

This high end gaming should be, if your device is supported, possible without any lags and without OC. You have a rom with Siyah at this moment?

Yes, I'm on DiLiDroiD UHLPS, 3.0.15-Siyah-s2-v4.1.5+
thanks for your reply
I'm sorry, wouldn't know any other suggestions than to try this game with another (newer) rom and a upgraded Siyah version, and see if the problem still exists. OC shouldn't be necessary in my opinion.
Why don't you make a Nandroid back up and flash another rom to try?

I'm limited to what Roms I can use because I use Jkay Deluxe Settings, this app is a must for me.... while your here, could you advise me how to overclock safely(ish)
It all looks foreign to me, GPU FREQ STEP1- 100Mhz.......??? ExTweaks really should have a guide of some sort, ANY SORT!
Thanks again for reply

I use my phone for wifi, to download 300Mb roms just to try would be ridiculous when they download at around 20kps (PLEASE SEE OTHER THREAD BY ME TITLED -wifi tethering ridiculous fluctuations, those tech minded please reply- ASKING FOR HELP ON THIS MATTER, which has 72 views and not a single reply I might add)

I have zero knowledge about OC, so I can't help you with it...
Good luck anyway.

I had the same problem you have with the browser app, it was really lagging when I clicked on a link, always took at least a few seconds to load the page. So I went onto ExTweaks and OC'd my CPU to 1600mhz and my GPU to all the highest settings, it didn't make any difference to my browser but now if I'm ever stranded in the Arctic I can use my phone to melt ice into water, for about 15 minutes before the batter dies that is.
Gta gangstar rio city is a poorly optimized game..so it will lag no matter what
So dont bother about this game..
I have also been struggling with finding rom/kernel combo for best gaming performance..and none of the users actually help here as they just want to underclock their s2 and have long batterry life and flaunt their s2..thats it!!!
for getting better fps..i would suggest using ondemand governer..and use 500-1400 mhz scaling on CPU and set your gpu to like 200-267-400 and set low thresholds..But beware this is for serious gaming only lol and will drain your battery pretty good..but u will get a fps boost of about 6-7. A slightly pretty lower setting is : cpu scaling same and set gpu to 200-267..with ondemand governer..this is also gives you a good gaming performance
also..download nenamark 2 and let me know what fps u get with siyah 4 kernel and note the settings in extweak used..im also thinking of switching from siyah 3.5 to 4 but got no time to test lol

I play so many HD games including Ganstar, NFS MW, Modern Combat 3 without no lag what so ever. And I do not use OC because it causes the phone to overheat. I think somethings wrong with your current ROM. Do a backup and try another ROM just to check

From my experience in general, only a few apps tend to overheat my sg2 (overclocked to only 1.4 Ghz though).
